I wanted to create a list of the games I have tried coming from Japanese designers. I have noticed a trend for some of the games to become quite popular overseas.

There are also quite a few good games that get overlooked for overseas publishing.

This list is just games that I own or have owned and a small review of what I think of the games.

If you have a game to add, or your own mini-review of one I already added ~ go for it!

I will also add games that I would like to try, and if anyone has tried them please do share your experience.

Dungeon of Mandom

I have had this game for quite a while, even made a little solo variant for it.
but
I only actually got to play it with someone else this last week. It is a great little quick game.

Quick Review:
Components - The components that come with this tiny little game are very nice. The item tiles are very thick and even come in Japanese and English. Can't read Japanese? No worries, just flip the tile over.
The cards are very nice with very cool artwork on them. Everything fits perfectly in the tiny box as well. You can just put this in your pocket and take it anywhere. The table-space required is very small as well.

Setup- Place all the items and "You" tiles in the center of the play area. Shuffle the monster cards and place them face-down on the table near the items. Each player gets a player aid card and places it in front of them. That's it.

How is plays -During a player's turn there are 2 options. 1.)draw a card. Then decide to place the card in the dungeon, or remove it from the game. However if you remove it, you must also remove one of the helpful items placed in the center of the play area.
2.) Pass. If everyone passes, the last person must enter the dungeon and fight all the monsters.

Winning conditions - to win the game you must enter and defeat all the monsters in the dungeon 2 times. Or be the last player alive. If you enter the dungeon and don't defeat the monsters you must flip your player aid card over to the red side showing you are wounded. If you fail twice you are dead.

The real challenge to the game is in reading your opponent's face. You only know what monsters you placed in the dungeon, so you have to try and guess whether you opponent has placed tough monsters in there or is playing you and has placed easy monster in there.
You don't want to pass too early because your opponent will go in the dungeon and kill all the monsters. But at the same time if you wait too long and the dungeon is filled with monsters and your opponents pass first, you might be screwed and get yourself killed in the dungeon...

What I think: I have only played the game with 2 players and it works very well. Each turn you sit there studying your opponent's reactions to whatever monster they drew, and then when it gets time to start thinking about passing it gets tough... if I pass now my opponent is going to sail through that dungeon... or are they?! If I wait one more turn I might get thrown in with those monsters and torn apart....
Very nice game! I like it a lot, and the very short playtime is great. I can bust this out at work during lunch break, or when out hiking or backpacking you can just toss it in your pack and it weighs next to nothing.
As a quick filler game, doesn't get much better. 4.5/5

Quick Review:
(if I mess up the brief rules overview it is because I'm doing it off the top of my head.. really just to give a basic idea of how it plays.)

Components- The components for this game are nice, maybe if it gets republished it could get a few small upgrades though.
The gear cards are normal cardstock and fairly nice. The tiles are good, but could have been a little thicker to keep them from slightly warping. Not very noticeable though. I remember someone else wrote the components don't fit in the box, but that is not true, they fit fine. I think the box could have been a little wider, then the components would fit a little easier.
The only component I thought too flimsy are optional mission type cards. They just change up the game a bit from play to play.

Setup- Each player gets a starting tile from which to build there forces to defeat the baddies.
Shuffle the brown knight tiles and then the gold tiles, placing the gold at the bottom of the stack. Then place out 5 knights to form the recruitment pool.
Place out the gear cards in 3 stacks of small(1), medium(2) and large(3) gears.
Then set out all the monsters.

How to Play- On your turn you draw gears according to the gear symbols on the bottom row of your knights. At the beginning of the game it will be 2. That means you can draw 2 small gear cards, or 1 medium gear card. The farthest left row will also show how many cards you can hold in your hand.
As you place knights in your rows going across and up you will be able to draw more gears and keep more cards in your hand as well as defend against the curses the monsters inflict. The tops of the knights also have abilities they grant.
On your turn you can recruit a knight or kill a monster.
Each monster is worth points and the knights are as well.

Winning conditions- To win the game just be the person with the most points.

What I think:
I rather like this game, it is fairly simple, but makes you think. Each knight essentially has 4 possible uses + its strength. They will add to your hand size, draw amount, curse blocking, or special ability. The only thing is the curse points aren't really used after the first part of the game, unless I'm playing it wrong.
Overall I like the game and would like to get this one out more, but don't have many opportunities to do so. Playing solo with my simple variant works for a quick game when no one else is around to play with.
I give it a 3.5 stars. Fun interesting game.

This game is a very light filler about mice trying to save a princess mouse from the evil dragon.

Quick review:

Components- The components for the game are very very nice. The small gameboard is a pop-up, like a pop-up book. The mice are represented with little mice meeples and so is the dragon and princess.
the cards are also very nice with great artwork and a linen finish.

Setup- Place out the board with the mice meeples in the village and the dragon and princess at the end of the track.
Shuffle the cards and set them out.

How to play- On your turn you can draw cards and move your mouse along the track. You can stop whenever you want, but if you draw a skull card you end your turn and don't get to do anything.
When you make it to the dragon you must have one of the weapon cards to defeat it.
That's about it I think.

What I think: This game while very beautiful was not very much fun for me.... I played it a few times with a few different friends, but it really fell flat with everyone. Kinda like a mini-candyland with a push your luck element...
I actually got rid of the game, just didn't think it would ever get played again...
I give it 2 stars. One of the stars just for the great components..

Coming in the mail, should be here in a day or two.

Update: Got the game and played a game versus myself.. just to learn the rules and make sure I understood all the card text. I will hopefully get my wife to play this while we are on the airplane..

My thoughts thus far (proper mini-review after more plays):

Setup-Take out the player aid cards and blank custom cards. Shuffle the 100 card deck and deal out a hand of 7 cards to everyone. Then flip the top card to make the play pile (or whatever you call it).

How to play-
It is a game based on the mechanics of UNO, but with some differences.
The game is played in 3 rounds and at the end of each round the losers must take penalties depending on the cards left in their hands and those in their "karma".
Karma is built up when you decide to play a card not on the pile, but place it in front of yourself. When you do that you can use that cards special ability.
If you play a card as karma, it still must match the color on top of the play pile. Cards played as karma don't effect the pile color.
There are also timer cards in the deck, and if all 4 of them are drawn then the round ends immediately and all the players will take a penalty.

Most of the cards have special abilities, but some of them have a high penalty if you lose the round. So it is a balance of playing to gain an advantage, but also having to worry that if you do lose the round you might have sunk yourself..

Night Clan

This seems to be a newer game I stumbled upon while looking for a quick game to play with my friends. I've gotten to play it a few times with my friend.

It is a game about a village. In this village are wealthy merchants. They have many daughters and riches that they want to protect. This village is plagued by a troll that lives in the woods. At night the troll comes to steal the riches and take the merchant's daughters.
The merchants must find safe places to stow away their riches and keep their daughters safe.
Will the library be safe? The church? The lampshop? The old castle?

Quick Review:

Components - The components are a deck of cards. They are very nice cards and the artwork (actually why it caught my eye in the first place) is very nice.

Setup - It plays 2-4 players. Depending on the number of players place out the location cards (look at the back of the cards to determine which ones to use for the # of players.)
Then each player gets their own deck of cards. There are 4 decks each with a different color; red, blue, green and yellow.

How to play- One your turn draw to have a hand of 3 cards. Then choose 2 of the cards to place on any of the locations. Each location has a number on it. That number shows how many cards can be placed on that location in total.
The daughter cards and night-watch cards are both played face up, and the riches, troll and mistletoe cards are played face-down.
The night watch is worth -1 point, but when played allows you to move a card from or to that location. This can be very useful.

Scoring - After all the cards have been played the player with the most cards of their color on a location gets to keep the points for all the cards there.
However if a troll is in that location all the points are lost. BUT if the mistletoe card is also on the location with the troll you still get to keep the points with the -2 from the troll.
After totaling up all the locations the player with the highest score wins.

What I think: This is a quick light filler with a bluffing element to it. I really like the game, simple to teach and the theme although it could really be anything, is nice and what made me buy the game in the first place (with the nice art too.)
I give it 4 stars

The title translates something like~
The Brave Apprentice and the Wizard.

I actually don't have this game anymore either. I bought it simply because it was 1-2 players and most of my game collection is solo-able games. I did notice it said it was aimed at kids, but thought I'd give it a try anyhow.

Quick Review:

Components- A deck of cards and some little tokens. The cards are nice and the little plastic discs are good.
The box is a little weird, it opens like a book and is held closed with an elastic sparkly thing tied with an overhand knot. I think I would have preferred a normal box.
The box insert is nice though with one side is for the cards, the other for the little tokens.

Setup - Choose either the girl or boy deck of cards and place them all out upside down on the table. Place the monster deck facedown on the table with the top half being the easier monsters and the bottom half harder monsters (If I recall correctly..)

How to play- Flip over a monster and then you can flip over a number of the good-guys cards to match the symbols on the monster. If they match the monster is defeated. If not you will lose cards from your pool of good-guy cards.
If you defeat all the monsters you win.
I think the girl deck made it a little easier to win and the boy one harder. Each of the cards has two symbols on it with which to defeat the baddies. The boy deck has a number of cards with 1 or 0 symbols making it tougher.

What I think: This game might be better for kids... as was written on the shops site. Although not a horrible game, it was not all that interesting. A sort of memory matching game.
I give it 3 stars... for a kids game. It looks like it is easier with 2 players as they can help each-other remember what cards are what. With kids it might be fun.

For me as a solo game... 1 star, got bored of it very quick.

A game in progress.

In the mail. Should arrive in a day or two.

Update: got it, haven't gotten to play yet, but looked over the cards and watched a gameplay video, looks very cool. Both of the decks play quite differently and look interesting.

Update update: Brought this to some of my classes and the students enjoyed playing it. I also brought it to Hawaii to play with my family and they liked it.
Good little quick game, easy to throw in your pocket and bring essentially anywhere. Still have, don't get it out often though.

Dorasure (A mixture of Dragon and Treasure)

I've been looking to buy this game for a while, but cannot find it... out of stock at all the shops.

Looks to be a co-op adventure game played out in about 30 minutes. Sounds great.

Here is a look at the game setup:

Update:

Got the game and all of the expansions. Check out my review, or quick translation of the Fang expansion.

Japanese card game with a very funny name, very interesting mechanics, quite playable tense and can be played in like 1-2 hours. Also has english rules and cards are in Japanese and in English. Excellent game. Based on Motofumi Kobayashi's Black Knight Japanese manga during the post Kursk Soviet offensives early 1944.

Recently got this one and loving it so far. I suppose it kinda reminds me of defenders of the realm/mansions of madness.
The game is scenario based and you run around trying to find clues in the city (kinda MoMish). When you find clues they lead to other clues etc..
Then while you are doing that baddies pop up every round. If too many pop up on a tile it becomes overrun.

As the title may allow you to assume, it does have a good dose of Cthulhu Mythos style theme. The heroes are all part of a group that searches for 禁書, forbidden tomes, that are dangerous and can lead to unleashing evil in the world. At the same time they use these books to help battle the evil, but at a cost of possibly becoming fallen, succumbing to the lure of the evil power.

Same designer as Ghost Hunter 13 and Blind Mythos. If it has the same design sense, I think I will enjoy it a lot.

Not a big fan of zombie themed games, but the designer so far has made some unique games I enjoy a lot.

So far have only gotten to play the solo rules. Simple push your luck.. kinda game.
In the solo version you have 6 rounds to drink as much ale as you can without passing out.
The innkeeper messes with you while doing so to mix things up.

Solo version takes like 5~10 minutes.

I will probably give the 2 player version a try sometime soonish.
