This list started as a top 20 solo games (mainly for the Top 100 People's choice solo games), but as I was writing facts about each game I realize that my solo games are my story as a gamer: how my taste change from deep strategic games (euros and abstracts) to thematic ones.

There are a lot of solo games that I like that are not here because I only kept the ones that had something to do with my old taste. So, this is not my top solo games, only a list that tells the story of my taste changing over the years.

My favorite game, both solo and up to four players.

Why? Theme, Story, Amazing Memories, Variety, Complexity, Horror, Lovecraft.

Interesting facts: Being a fan of horror, Arkham was my first choice to buy a modern board game. I found an used copy with expansions but my sister was not able to buy it (the vendor had just sold it), so she bought my second choice: Agricola. A few years later, I got it in a trade (bye, bye Carson City) and, as I imagined, it was a blast. I played 7 times in 6 days during a vacation and now I own every expansion and I play about 20 times each year.

Usually I don't like to build decks even if I like the game. Then I discovered Sentinels, a game that gives you individual thematic decks ready to play. Incredible.

Why? Theme, Story, Amazing Memories, Variety, Super Heroes!

Interesting facts: It was the end of the Euro-Abstract era and the beginning of the Ultra-Thematic era. I bought Terra Mystica and after the end of the first play I was deeply frustrated with the lack of theme, something that never bothered me previous to this experience. At the time, my favorites were all Euros or Abstracts, but after that play I start to think and decided to try something new. I traded Terra Mystica for Manhattan Project (because I saw somewhere that it was a good thematic Euro) and Sentinels of Multiverse. I never looked back.

The base game is fine but Gates of Arkham is "The Real Game".

Why? Theme (yes, it is there), Three Modes of Play, Amazing Memories, Arkham Express (with GoA of course).

Interesting facts: I traded my boring copy of Tikal for Elder Sign. At first I found the game fun but not great. I liked to play it, but not very often. The first expansions made it a bit better, the new dice and entrance were really good. But then, GoA appears and everything changes, the game skyrocketed to my top 10 favorites. Nowadays I always play at least 3 times in sequence.

I was joking about how my tastes changed during the years and said to a friend: "Why it took me so long to find these fun games?" He answered: "Because you were busy playing Torres". Cruel but true.

Why? Theme, Brain Burner.

Interesting facts: Yes, I used to like Torres. It was so beautiful on the table, something like a fine sculpture. The gameplay is good, I played it a lot. But then someone offered me a trade with Robinson Crusoe. After several years of castle building, now I spend my time trying to survive in a savage environment, starving, feeling cold, being trapped and beaten to death. Who cares, it is funnier.

P.S.: I had to buy Torres again (new version) because my kids still love it.

Cooperative: Good. Can be played solo: Great. Science Fiction: Amazing!

Why? Theme, Puzzle, Star Trek-ish!

Interesting facts: This one was on my radar during several years, but something else always appear to take it's place. Once again, the opportunity present itself in a Math Trade. The lovely game of manipulating camels had to go. Sorry, Through the Desert, you are great, but I don't love you anymore.

Like so many other kids, I wanted to be a fire-fighter, because I thought it was the closest real thing to a super hero. Eventually I learn software programming, the closest real thing to a super power.

Why? Theme, Quick, Puzzle.

Interesting facts: This time the victim was Battle Line, a really good 2 player wargame-ish. But I prefer to save people from fires and explosions than participating in an ancient battle.

Wow, it is so quick and fun, the art is so weird (but beautiful). I definitely prefer it over Dominion.

Why? Fast and Furious (no, I don't like the movie).

Interesting facts: No, it was not Dominion that went to Kansas, it was Qwirkle. I know, Qwirkle is not deeply strategic but it has no theme either. Also, Ascension SoS did not arrived alone, it was accompanied by Ascension: Immortal Heroes.

Despite it's many flaws, I love this one. I usually to play the official solo scenario and also the scenarios of the base game with some variants. Of course that changed now due to the amazing second edition, but I still try to play the solo scenario now and then.

Why? Theme, Story, Amazing Memories, Variety, Complexity, Horror, Lovecraft.

Interesting facts: I am a fan of Star Wars and I tried to like Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game, I tried really hard. I bought a lot of expansions, but in the end it is not a game for me, I never felt the theme while playing. I thought about keeping the ships because they are so gorgeous but someone offered me MoM in exchange for two of them and it was a no brainer.
