As a game collector, I acquire games from many places; some retail, some mail-order, some from other collectors, an occasional rare gift, and, of course, I've also played in the Kickstarter space a bit too. I've seen many geeklists from other gamers decrying their poor experiences with various Kickstarter projects. There are numerous reports of epic failures, of endlessly delayed projects, and sad disappointments. Every once in a while, I stumble on a postive Kickstarter list as well. This got me thinking... what about my own experiences? How many projects have I been linked with and how have they worked out?

This geeklist includes the game projects that I have backed and games that I have acquired that started out as Kickstarter projects. The list is in order of Kickstarter projects.

Summary:
Backed: 40
Bought: 12

Pending: 6

Most Over Due: Storm Hollow at 18 months and counting.

Kickstarter: November 23, 2010
Est. Delivery: n/a (not in the KS write up)
Act. Delivery: October 29, 2011

Background:
This was a group buy-in project and one of my first forays into Kickstarter. I offered to take 1 of the multiple copies a friend was buying in on even though I was not drawn to the game. Thematically it was fine, but I am not much for deck builders.

Projects Benefits:
Came with 'exclusive' planet cards and a bonus for the delayed production.
Eminent Domain: Bonus Planets
&

Eminent Domain: Elusive/Exclusive Victory Promo

Project Results:
I don't know how poorly they did on timing as I didn't really watch the project unfold. but apparently it was delayed enough that a bonus card was given out. I did play the game a couple of times and I liked aspects of it, but overall, it was a deck builder and as such really just didn't tickle my fancy too much.

Kickstarter: June 14, 2011
Est. Delivery: n/a
Act. Delivery: n/a (Picked Up: March 28, 2012)

Background:
I didn't back this game on kickstarter and very likely because I didn't know about it, or have much opinion one way or the other regarding the designer. So it full under my radar until after I learned a bit more of the designer's other games and that this one was specifically designed for 3 players.

Projects Benefits:
None that I am aware of.

Project Results:
Having learned that I have liked the designer's other games and discovering that this was designed for 3 players, I opted to picked it up and see what the designer did with it. Three players is a tough player count and any design specific for it is interesting to look at. The production of the game is solid and well done. I've not gotten the game to the table yet and so I can't comment on how well the designer did. Someday...

Background:
I liked the company and figured I give them a go on on their next big game. It also seemed to be in the style of game that I like. So it wasn't too hard to convince myself to jump on board.

Projects Benefits:
- Sunrise City: Bonus Roles and Buildings

Project Results: thumbsup
Production on this was rock solid. And timing wasn't too bad. The components are really top notch and the art style is quite cool and unique (to me). I enjoyed the game, but it hasn't gotten as much play as it should have. I should probably do something about that!

Kickstarter: October 2, 2011
Est. Delivery: March, 2012
Act. Delivery: August 13, 2012

Background:
I bought the base game directly from the publisher right after the kickstarter ended and ended up with the kickstarter (1st) edition. Having liked the game quite a bit, I figured I buy into this the expansion right from the start.

Actually, I didn't back this one directly, but instead went in with a friend who order multiple copies. I had a slight delay in catching up with my friend which is why the delivery date was "missed".

Projects Benefits:
Came with Faction Pack #1

Project Results:
The quality of the components in the expansion were very nice. The game play seemed to be a bit off. It might have been what factions we ended up playing together, or simply player inexperience. In the end, the expansion was not so grand that I have hunted down the other packs. I am eager to hear if the Outer Belt expansion works out though. But not enough to have backed the kickstarter for it.

Background:
I didn't back this project. Not sure if I even knew about it, but based on the timing, I would likely have been more gun-shy. Space games are... risky. And this one had all the qualities of those risks. But at the same time, it had an appeal that was hard to pin-point. So in the end, I passed on the project.

Projects Benefits:
- New Race

Project Results:
But then I found this at the retail shop and debated all over again. And several weeks later, finally pulled the trigger on it. I'm not sure why I was slow on the up take, but what ever it was that caused that seems to have affected the table time as well. It's not yet played. I think it could be a good game and I think I need to find a way to test that.

Airships and steampunk and Pick-up & Delivery, and... I'm in. This was a group buy that I coordinated. 3 copies in total with 1 for myself and 2 going to those friends that had found games for me before. Even though they all had their own vote for buying in, I as coordinator felt some sense of ownership in how this one turned out.

Projects Benefits:
Per the kickstarter page, this included the following over funding rewards:
- 7th Team "Mafia Guys"
- Plastic Airships

I'm not sure these were actually included, but something was upgraded in the components.

Project Results: thumbsup
Overall, the production on this game is pretty good. The game play is also something that I liked, but I'm not sure it hit the mark with everyone. It really seems to be hit or miss with players. The timing on this one was long and delays were quite common.

I think this is a nice little game and the kind I would have backed had I known of it. given the project's timeline, I wouldn't have been likely to find it as i was not watching Kickstarter too closely. in the end, I'm glad that people backed it because now I have a copy of the game too.

Another title that I didn't back. In fact, I didn't realize that this was a kickstarter game until after I purchased it.

Project Results:
So I picked this up from an individual. It was a sealed copy and apparently they were a backer. Perhaps they bought multiple copies. But at the price they sold this to me, I'm not sure they even broke even. That fact has caused me not to push to get it to the table. It's not fully the style of game I normally play. But as a collector, it had some appeal as something... different. Maybe I'll get it played soon.

I opted to pick up the For The Win: 3-4 Player Expansion for extra cheap.

Project Results: thumbsup
The project's timeline wasn't held, but the game was delivered and the quality of the pieces was good. It's a solid little abstract in the same vane as Hive and an interesting addition to the game collection.

I actually picked this up at retail. Yup. I bought a kickstarter game via retail. Granted it was over a year later, but i doubt I would have had the chance to do so if not for the supporters that did back this project. Likely the 1st game that I was glad that others funded so that I could benefit later. Did I get a kickstarter edition? Not that I know of. I'm pretty sure my copy did not include the Geekspansion. Glad I bought this one though, but not so glad that I can't seem to serve it up to anyone. Come on people... it's COFFEE!

This was one of the first projects I backed directly. It sounded like a fun game. I opted for the special box and signature and pretty much bought into the whole kickstarter game on this one.

Projects Benefits:
This one came with two expansions:

- Escape: The Pit

- Escape: Illusions

And a bonus free game. I picked:
- Roma

Project Results: thumbsup
I guess there were some issues during the project, but they never really struck me as a problem and I really didn't watch that closely. The game itself has gotten played quite a bit and I am glad to have it. I figured this was a pet project that wouldn't fly for some commercial reason... or so the kickstarter led me to believe. I figured this would be a one and done release. But the game has several expansions already and more are likely. I find it odd that it started as a kickstarter. I would learn more about why with future releases from this company. Such as in the next project...

The theme on this one drew me in. I first saw the game on an Essen video and I was excited to hear that it would be coming soon. I figured that if it was demoed at Essen, it was already in production or nearly so. When it arrived, it "arrived" as a kickstarter project. That's strange, I thought. Why is an established company using kickstarter to get a game published? Oh well, I like the game so I backed it.

Projects Benefits:
The game came with 3 promos.
- Promo #1

- Promo #2

- Promo#3

A side benefit to this one was a free game. I picked up:
- Arena: Roma II

Project Results: thumbsup
I was confident that I would like this game from the video demo and in the end I did. I'm glad I backed the game, but this project was one that really got me asking what kickstarter was for and which projects should I be backing.

I collect games. Sometimes I collect games that are just fun to play and sometimes I get games because of historical context. This game was the latter for sure. I was intrigued by a game that had roots in history, but had vanished from modern eyes. Like my interest in the Indian playing cards (Ganjifa), I opted in on this project with hopes of discovering a bit of history.

Projects Benefits:
None

Project Results: thumbsup
I might have skirted disaster with this one, based on the creator's follow-up project and subsequent disappearance. But this one was actually delivered and a missing piece I needed was even replaced! The game's production is okay. It ended up smaller than I expected, but it matches what was promised. Overall - I'm glad to have this one as the game is one out of history and quite unusual. So unusual that it remains unplayed.

Project Results: thumbsup
I was slow to try the game, even given the cross path I had in picking it up from my friend. But I eventually did get it and it was hit with the family. The expansion isn't all that enticing and it remains unused, but the core game has been played and requested several times.

Having got me feet wet with a few bigger projects, I decided to hunt for smaller game projects that might yield something interesting. It didn't take long to find something that fit the bill. This project looked like a light game that could be a gateway style affair. It was priced right and game play seemed promising.

Projects Benefits:
This one had an exclusive alternate trade deck call Expedite: Limited Edition Word Trade Card Set.

Project Results: thumbsup
The campaign was well run with communications on progress timely and ultimate delivery hitting the mark. Overall production quality was pretty good. I ran into a minor issue with board damage due to how the board was cut and subsequently folded, but its not bad and is easy to avoid making worse if a little care is taken. The components are fine and well made - although some color combinations are hard to see on the cards.

Background:
I bought into this one because the idea was novel. The idea that a spoken language was part of the game sounded (sorry about the pun) cool. I also liked the different play modes: duel, team, coop, and solo. The game style itself was less of my cup of tea, but I gave it a go anyways.

Projects Benefits:
Too numerous...
- Bonus cards
- Trade Points (for future/limited cards)
- Art upgrades
- Digital timer
- More trade points
- More art upgrades
- Bonus specialization
- Even more trade points
- Even more art upgrades
- Play testing kit (wait, what?)
- Sigil pin
- Final art upgrades
- Signed codex
- Some TBD card(s)
- Blurred game / reality card stashes (umm... where is this going?)
- Upgraded codex binders (add-on price)
- Online web-site at launch

Project Results:
The project went WAY longer than indicated up front. I think this was largely because the designers basically redesigned the game after the success of the funding ($195k raised vs. $18k planned). In the end, the production was pretty solid, but the game is unplayed by me. I am curious if this one has had any staying power with the fans...

Background:
Sometime back in the summer of 2012, a small company started up a project for a little game and I somehow missed it. Imagine that! Well.. not too surprising that I missed (yet) another game project. When I stumbled on a game that claimed to include Pick-up & Deliver and Area Control mechanisms (2 of my favorties!) I figured I should give the little game a go. And so (yet) another game project backed by others finds its way into my collection through retail.

Projects Benefits:
- A custom draw bag (upgrade)
- Cardboard Start Tile
- Custom Wooden Pawn

Project Results:
I enjoy games that manage to cram a lot of play into small boxes. I have high hopes for this one, but thus far it hasn't hit the table. It really should because the mechanics in the game remain some of my absolute favorite. In time I hope.

Kickstarter: June 30, 2012
Est. Delivery: August 2012
Act. Delivery: n/a (Picked Up: April 1, 2014)

Background:
I found this game at a retailer deeply discounted. I figured I would give it a shake for the descent price. Only after I bought it, did I learn that this started out as a kickstarter project.

Projects Benefits:
Looks lie several custom and expansion cards were included in the kickstarter, but my retail copy was the base game only.

Project Results:
The quality of the printing on this one didn't wow me when I opened it, but they were not so bad that I thought it was poor. The game play itself is still untested as I haven't played the game yet.

Background:
I had fond memories of playing my brother's copy of this game back in the 80s. I always thought it was a very good game and it was the closest thing to a simulator that we really had. When the reprint was announced, I figured this was an easy win.

Projects Benefits:
This one came with a few add on options, but I opted for none.

Project Results: thumbsdown
The project was plagued with missteps. The art work for the project wasn't actually done when the project was launched and funded. The artist hired to do the work failed to deliver, and the second artist needed to basically start from scratch. After many delays in the artwork saga, the production began. And it too ran into problems that really should have been easily avoided with a little quality control by either the project creator OR the printer. A book should never get printed with page numbers on the inside gutter vs outer page sides unless someone just didn't care to check. There were even a page that was unreadable (which is a pretty big problem in this game). At least the latter one had a fix (that I created based on the errata). I like having a copy of the game, but boy I wish the production of this one had been done right.

Background:
This game came up via the RPG side of my gaming. I enjoy the Spirit of the Century game system and theme. I like the company and what they have done in the RPG game space. So I figured if they were headed into boardgame territory, I'd go with them.

Projects Benefits:
This project came with a couple of game bonus items:
Race to Adventure! Expansion Pack: Dinocalypse Now and the Hollow Earth

Race to Adventure: Strange Travels Rules

It also came with a nifty SotC patch.

Project Results: thumbsdown
I still like the RPG. I still like the company. I *almost* like the game. Production quality was fine. Game play was okay, but it lacked a little something that none of us that played through could put our finger on. I think it works and I think it could be fun, but it didn't quite come together.

Yet another unbacked project that I ended up buying at retail. I think this one flew under my radar on the Kickstarter front and I really had no idea of the project.

Projects Benefits:
- Wooden 18wheeples (trucks)
And The Great Heartland Hauling Co.: Badlands

Project Results: thumbsup
This was a great purchase and a find. This game packs so much into such a small box. Easily one of the best fillers that I have played. It's easy to teach, easy to set up, easy to clean up, and easy to carry. This is the kind of game that gamers should have in the game bag often. And it was the ideal kind of project for Kickstarter. Do yourself a favor and go pick this one up.

Kickstarter: October 4, 2012
Est. Delivery: June 2013
Act. Delivery: Not Yet Delivered

Background:
I have a young daughter and I figured that a board / Role-playing game set in a fairy tale world would be perfect for her. The project description on this one seemed a perfect match and the promised content was unbelievable. This was an ambitious project for sure. The fact that it appeared almost ready to go to production was a selling point. I bought in big and had high hopes that it would be a great gateway game for my daughter.

Projects Benefits:
No strict rewards, but options to buy in partially or fully. I went big and signed up for the deluxe boxed set, including:
- Preludes
- Pieces of A Broken World
- 6 Bookmarks
- 6 Postcards
- Map poster
- Coloring book
- Set of 12 extra dice
- 48 sticker set

Project Results:
This project is wrought with overruns and troubles. Not all of them are the designers / publishers. The lawsuit over the name - that resulted in the rebranding from Story Realms to Storm Hollow was just a bump in the road in hindsight. The game's design looked very close to ready based on the kickstarter, but actual work completed must have fallen very short of expectations or such as the game has basically been redesigned from the ground up. It still has some excellent artwork and the idea is perfect for young kids to get into a game, but I am seriously wondering if my daughter will grow out of this BEFORE the game is ever delivered. We will continue to wait and see...

Background:
I think I like the idea of steampunk. It's clockwork nature seems natural for a boardgame's cube pushing. So this one had the theme and it seemed on the surface to have a descent play. What would another kickstarter matter, right? One more to add to the collection.

Projects Benefits:
This one had a great thematic tie-in for the project. Namely, Mars Needs Mechanics: Kickstart.

Project Results:
Production quality on this was very good. And I like elements of the game design, but in the end play was a little less than hoped for. Did I give it enough of a chance? Not likely. But getting it to the table again has been tough.

Projects Benefits:
came with 2 expansions:
Viticulture: Arboriculture Expansion

and

Viticulture: Kickstarter Promotional Cards

Project Results: thumbsup
I think this was a very well run project. Game content, design, and even delivery timing were all out of the park. Really thankful for my friend's find on this one. In fact, I liked it so much I backed more games from this publisher just because of this project. Goes to show that good effort is rewarded.
