BGG Secret Santa Season is upon us! Hurrah!

Every year many clever Santas (or their elvish operatives) will 'taunt' their targets with hints as to what is coming, or threats to get off the Naughty list and on to the Nice list.

Share your experiences here - to celebrate the fun that is BGG Secret Santa, and to inspire other Santas to the possibility of creating an epic experience for their targets!

[It has been noted many times that 'Silent Santas' are no less worthy than those who choose to taunt. This list is in no way meant to shame any of our 2500+ Santas! It is simply a fun way to share and expand the experience.]

A little something until the first missives arrive:

I need some advice from an experienced Santa. I got a target who has almost no profile history.

This makes it hard to determine what to get for them. I can just buy something off their list but frankly I want to have a little fun with this. To Me the experience is as important as them getting a game. I would love to get them something extra that I think they would like. I want to go overboard but I feel restricted.

I do have what appears to be an external email address that I could email from a dummy account asking for more information. I could get him a copy of "Coal Barron" and include a note asking for him to give Santa more details about himself. Or I could get him a game near the top of his list and hope for a better pull next year.

Edit: I just got the email from the admin saying how to use the Santa Geek mail account. So I can just send him a GM asking for more details in a fun way. Still any advice would be appreciated.

A Santa who wishes to remain secret asked that I share this poem they sent to their target:

Secret Santa wrote:
Subject: A Poem From Santa!

My list has been writ,
Precious care has been taken,
Elves in a fit,
One gift they are makin'.
Recall this year past,
Many things you have done,
Kept nice to the last,
Prepare to have fun!
All your wishes considered,
Everything's been assessed,
Trust that when it's delivered,
It will keep your interest.
One hint just for you,
It's right out in the blue!
Ready? One Month! Adieu!

Here is my back and forth with Santa.

Dear Santa,

Thank you so much for taking part in BGG's Secret Santa event. This is my second year participating and I'm very excited to see what tricks are up your sleeve.

You may be looking at my wish list with confusion and I wanted to explain. My friends that got me into board games have moved away cry and trying to get my other friends to play has been harder than pulling teeth. I'm not a dentist so take that any way you'd like. whistle Frequently my co-workers and I will meet for game night, but the most advanced game we play is Ca$h 'n Guns. They all LOVE to play Telestrations. We frequently have 10+ players, so party games that can accommodate that many people are ideal. I know it's popular, but my group wouldn't be a fan of Werewolf or any versions of that, unfortunately. I think it has to do with the theme, which is why I kickstarted Two Rooms and a Boom.

One of my coworkers and her husband have shown a big interest in playing games, but they have only played Catan on their tablet before. I have more advanced games like Pandemic (2nd edition), Tobago, and Tzolk'in That are collecting dust on my shelves and I'd really like to get some more "beer and pretzel" type games, in order to prepare them for the more strategic games. If you know of a magical game, not on my wish list, that won't scare away newbies yet keep a seasoned gamer like myself engaged, by all means send it.

My owned list and wish list are 100% up to date, so this should give you a good gauge of the types of games I like. I also really enjoy expansions, as long as they make the base game better.

If you have ANY questions for me, send me a taunt message and I'll get right back to you.

Happy Holidays!
Dan

Subject: HO HO HO Merry Christmas!

Duane

So I was making my list, and then had to check it twice when I came to your name. I was almost going to put you on the naughty list, but then I saw your request for games that everyone can play. Getting friends into games tipped the scale to put you on the nice list, but I'll expect better from you next year.

Games that 10+ people can play is a tall order, but Santa sees you have pointed some out for him and I think I know a few that might fit the bill. You spoke of the theme of Werewolf not fitting your group, is it the specific theme in the werewolf game or would they prefer more real situations as opposed to Fantasy/Sci-Fi?

Lastly, the mail Elf here at the shop has been doing a terrible job, so if you wouldn't mind please respond in your profile as that will be the easiest way for Santa to see your response.

Ho Ho Ho,
Santa

-----------------------------------------------------------
Santa,

I was smiling ear to ear when I realized there was a message from you! Hopefully I can answer all your questions. There are two reasons why I feel werewolf wouldn't be well received by my coworkers. First it has lots of "down time" and we like to drink and laugh while playing games. Secondly, many of my coworkers are introverts and wouldn't feel comfortable playing. To be honest werewolf only somewhat interests me and I only listed it because I know many experienced board gamers would think of it when I mentioned a party game for so many players. Two rooms and a boom is similar, but I think the separate rooms and heavy emphasis on teams, with no moderator better suits my coworkers.

I know 10+ players is a tall order, so please don't feel tied to getting a party game that accommodates so many players. If there is a non party game that you think I'll love and can help my good friend/coworker and her husband get into boardgames more, that will make me very happy as well! I hope you have the correct recipient because you addressed your letter to Duane, but I'm Dan. I want to make sure I'm on the nice list!

Dan
-----------------------------------------------------------
Subject: My ohh my!

Diane!

This is what Santa gets for trying to do too many things at the same time while working hard on getting your gifts together. Christmas is a busy time, and Santa needs to learn to focus more and eat cookies less.

Ho Ho Ho,
Santa

-----------------------------------------------------------
Subject: I think I've finally figured this computer thing out...

DAVID!

Good news, I think we have figured out the problem and squared away the whole name thing. It has to do with that Mail Elf problem I mentioned in my first letter to you.

Even better news Santa has your gift figured out and on it's way! I'm trying this U.S. Parcel System people keep telling me about to make it easier on me in my twilight years. Since the postal carriers have almost as much work to do as me this time of year, I made sure it is going out early so it gets to you by Christmas.

Ho Ho Ho,

Santa

-----------------------------------------------------------
Santa,

Oh those pesky Mail Elves can be so annoying. I'm glad you've solved the problem. Sometimes you've got to do things yourself, if you want them done correctly. Am I right? Thank you for getting my gift out so quickly! That is so kind of you! . Do I have to wait until Christmas to open it?

If you need any help figuring out the interwebs or other newfangled technology, just let me know!

-Darnell

-----------------------------------------------------------

I want to say that I absolutely LOVE getting trolled by my Santa. When I first read the wrong name, there was a half-second where I thought Santa was messing with me, but I quickly dismissed it because I thought of someone actually taunting the wrong target. So I pointed it out just to be safe. Now it's proven that my Santa has a great sense of humor. The funny thing about the last message is the fact that David is the #1 name I get called when people forget my name. I've literally LOL'd at each of Santa's letters. I'm so very happy!

TL;DR: My Santa is AWESOME!

This is my third year participating in Secret Santa.

I messed up my chance to have a lot of fun the first year because I didn't know about the Santa account and when I received messages from Santa I thought they were just fun automated messages for signing up for the Secret Santa. I didn't respond and I didn't taunt my target.

Second year I knew and my Santa was completely silent. I never heard so much as a peep from him and that disappointed me a bit. On the other end I never got any response or message from my target. So a bust.

This year I'm excited. My target still doesn't seem to get into it, sending only a short one-sentence response to my first taunt and not responding to any others (and not posting to his profile, I had to dig through Santa's e-mail to find the first response) but at least my Santa is taunting me and this time I know that there is a real person behind it.

This is what I received:

Quote:
Hello Soccastar001,

My name is Eldrick, I am the chief elf for Santa.
I have been tasked to determine whether you are eligible for a gift this year. To be honest, let me be upfront here, its not looking good. I've checked your ratings and am very disappointed. Did you know we elfs play Monopoly and Life every day? You know why? Because they are classic board games.
We don't waste our time playing games about farming, fantasy pursuits or 'battlestar galactica'. Please, get with the program and start playing Monopoloy - its the very essence of life! - mortgages, rent and jail! It don't get no better!

So Mr Soccastar001 I will be making a strong recommendation that you receive several themed Monopoly games - perhaps 'The Simpsons' or 'The Rolling Stones'. Did you know, last year we received 73 million requests for Monopoly and they were a pleasure to deliver. You know how many requests we got for 'mage knight'? 22 - and I followed all the 22 recipients to see how many enjoyed it and he is the summary:
18 - Still reading the rules but 'very excited'
2 - Played once and scarred for life
3 - Love it

Now, you might be thinking - he's an elf - he's never even played these new fangled games. Well MrS, that is where you are very wrong. Ever received a shrink wrapped game that is missing pieces? That's just us, the elfs, messing with your minds! ha ha ha

Regards,
E.

PS - Would greatly appreciate if you could explain the iconography from Race for the Galaxy - Santa is still telling us its worth playing but we don't get it at all.

PPS - Don't forget to collect an extra $500 if you pass Go!

And my response posted to my profile:

Quote:
Oh dear Santa, I'm sure you are limited in your options when hiring elves but perhaps you should take more care when promoting them through your ranks. Your head elf, Eldrick, is quite the character. I would think the head elf of your worldwide toy distribution company should be a little better at math. 18+2+3=23, not 22. He should also be better at following and remembering instructions, you collect $200 dollars when passing 'Go', not $500. He should also be more aware that Archer is a better cartoon series than The Simpsons and who would want a copy of Rolling Stones monopoly when Michael Jackson was the best musician of all time. Get it together Eldrick!

No response yet and I can't wait!

Dear Santa, I have replied to you on my profile as requested, but I'd also like to leave a message for you here. My own target is unfortunately an almost completely empty profile, no comments, no ratings, no posts, nothing. I hope I can encourage them to come out and play, but either way your fun message has made my first Secret Santa experience much more enjoyable. I wasn't sure how the whole taunting thing works, but I quite like the little bit of RPing involved and the extra fun anticipation it brings. Makes waiting on something to arrive a pleasure instead of a pain! Thank you very much for this, I'm very happy to have you as a Santa

My elves have been very busy this year keeping up with all the children and this wonderful website! I got your list and checked it twice and I'm really looking forward to getting you exactly what you deserve based on how good you have been... Love Letter, a torn box missing pieces knock off copy of Monopoly, (and how can I forget) FROZEN THE BOARD GAME! This year has been joyfully busy and I'm thrilled to be a part of this. It is my first year as well!

Stay good and keep playing games!

Santa

Oh, I try to balance the good with the bad as best as possible. Judging by the list of games I'm "getting" from Santa, I must have been amazing. Although I will say Frozen: The Board Game is so last year. My dear sweet 6 year old boy has realized (thanks to the help of public Schools)that "Frozen is a girls movie." I look forward to finding the pieces that are missing from that Monopoly board. Lord knows you can never have to many Frankenstein-ed copies of Monopoly. It's the only way to play. A couple cards from Monopoly deal and the credit card reader from the kids version do always make for an interesting interpretation. I can't wait to get another copy of Love Letter as well, I think the 5th copy is where it really hits its stride. . .

I will be waiting ever so impatiently.

Sometimes bad,
Josh

This being my first Secret Santa, I was super excited to see what my Santa would have to offer. So far, they have not disappointed me. I received this message relatively quickly.

---------------------------------
Subject: X-Mas/Coup/deliverance/operation_undermine
I’ll be brief. I am not Santa. My organization has infiltrated Santa Claus, Inc. in order to put a stop to its year-after-year monopolization of the holiday known as “Christmas.” We have obtained limited access to Santa's electronic communication system.

We support increased competition in the “Christmas” market. Why should we trust a single man (and his wife) with responsibility for the creation, procuration, and delivery of millions of goods across the globe? This organization is built upon the backs of unpaid elves living in undisclosed recesses of the North Pole. They live in fear and cower before the great Claus.

You have been identified as a sympathizer and placed on the “naughty” list. I’m sure you’re not surprised and this is the reason for your recent “relocation.”

My organization can change this and provide what is due to you, to your companion, and to your fellow adventurers but we need to know what side you are on. What side are you on Mr. Miller? Where is the prototype?
----------------------------------

At this point, I wasn't sure how to respond. I certainly was concerned for my position on the naughty list and I definitely didn't want to be associated with an organization that capitalized on slave labor. I was sure try to get something back to "Santa" pretty quickly. I heard that you're supposed to respond in your profile, so I did.

My Response:
----------------------------------
Begin Transmission -Encrypted Secure- RSA-SHA256 Engage

I log in to BGG huddled up with a blanket and a big mug of egg nog, only to discover, much to my horror, that I’ve been classified as naughty.

I swear our allegiances are only to that of free thought and open exchange. The little hat/car/iron of all Monopolies must be crushed at all costs.

We’ve relocated, not as a way to hide, but as a way to establish a new base of operation, so we can fight with the cause. With our move, we have secured the prototype in a top secret vault. To which, only the most trusted have access.

Our new stronghold in South Eastern PA will serve as a perfect lynchpin for East Coast operations moving forward.

Standing by for your next directive...
----------------------------------

After my message, all has gone dark. I hope my contact hasn't been detained. If they have, maybe I can do something sneaky to get them out? Or maybe, this was all an elaborate ruse from Santa himself to test my loyalties. If it was, I just failed miserably! laugh

This is fun!

I received this shortly after posting my last update:
----------------------------------
Subject: Trusted Elf, cert 5213444

Mr. Miller, they are on to me so we'll have to move quick. We need visual confirmation that the prototype is secure. Please confirm, standby, and wait for redirect.

----------------------------------

It took me a little bit, but I managed to gather some visual proof for the embattled operative. Here is what we posted:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Begin Transmission -Encrypted Secure- RSA-SHA256 Engage

We have received your message and have generated the visual proof required. Please see attached images for documented proof prototype exists.

Here are the images proving the prototype is locked down correctly:

Boardgame Vault

Secure Prototype Storage

Fiancée with Prototype Guard Dog

Unlocking Prototype Storage

Prototype Storage Unlocked!

Prototype Secure - Visual Proof Confirmed

Standing by for next directive.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

After this, "Santa/Elf Operative" went quiet for awhile. I received this message last night while I was sleeping.

----------------------------------
Subject: Automated Quality Control Notification
Miller and Companion:

Santa has discovered me. I have no doubt that I will be shipped to the north within days. It seems that there is a “naughtier” list for non-sympathizers.

In anticipation of my uprooting, I have shipped two items of great value. You will need them for the coming conflict.

You have proven your worth. Fear not the darkness. Farewell.

Elf 981000234
Quality Control

----------------------------------

Oh boy, oh boy! I can't wait to see what these items of great value can be.

If you're reading this "Santa," thanks for the entertainment. I've had a good time playing along.

Please forgive Santa
His rhymings not great
His brains been affected
By all the puddings he ate

I hope you can find the time
To put keyboard to fist
And put up your present
On the appropriate geeklist

Just one present to go
From Santa himself
I also snuck in some treats
From this not quite an elf

Please open it quick
So the contents don't spoil
As it includes some gifts
Only found on home soil.

I hope you enjoy
And remember to share
Or you'll have a waistline like Santa
And your wife may despair.

Happy Christmas from Lenny
And your Santa too
Please enjoy these gifts
That I send to you.

I also have news

Lenny's package arrived
And it caused me much joy

Enough with the rhyming
I've had quite enough
I must get to sleep
Or my morning be rough

Good night and thank you so much!

Ho Ho Ho, Merry Christmas.

This is Santa (for real this time) I see you were assigned Lenny, one of my helpers to deal with you thus far. This time of year I am so busy that I designate helpers to aid with my deliveries and when particularly busy my mail also gets outsourced. Unfortunately Lenny isn't actually an Elf, he is a leprechaun who found himself here after a particularly heavy night on the Guinness and believes himself to be an elf, he is really quite good but the one thing he cannot shake is the rhyming, it used to be endearing but it's been going on for years now and can wear a little thin.

Anyway I am now on the case and can see that you should be receiving a gift from me on Monday. It's a really fun game and I hope you enjoy it. As you have been such a great distraction for Lenny I have also sent you a special parcel direct from me to you, it may take a while to reach you as it has a ways to travel but I hope you enjoy it's contents.

Anyway I won't keep you any longer. Please enjoy your gifts I hope you have a Merry Christmas. Also feel free to share your interactions with Lenny in the Secret Santa 2014 Taunts thread. I am sure some people there will enjoy them.

That you've been a good boy
So now before Christmas
I will bring you joy

You see Santa's sleigh
is now on its way
that's right I've dispatched it
I could no longer delay.

I hope soon to receive
a tracking number
I may even get it
right now while you slumber

As soon its here
I'll send it in haste
I assure you time
I will not waste

I hope you enjoy it

I think I've got my work cut out
due to a lack of information
it seems your profile has become

perhaps you could write a letter
to help me with my hunt
you can pop it in your profile

Are you ok if I go off list
as yours seems rather small
I'd like to include a surprise or two
perhaps something off the wall.

I hope this all sounds fair to you
if not I understand
But maybe if you have the time

I want you to like the gifts I send
I think we both agree

This is exciting! My Santa sent me a word morph puzzle about a "first game." I think I figured it out--I couldn't sort out one of the clues, but I had enough answers by them to put it together. Clever Santa! But first game implies a second game, and this one would be enough. Generous Santa too! meeple

In case you are curious, here's the clue I couldn't figure out. It's a person (probably actor or actress)

_ _ _ / _ _ _ _ : Took a walk on the wild side

The last name is probably Reed or Reid.

Santa wrote:
Even though it is a busy time of year here at the North Pole, I'm writing you this quick note to say that I won't be forgetting the people like yourself who are-- literally-- a half a world away.

In past years when Mrs Claus and I went south for our summer getaway, we have stayed at the Marina Bay Sands and gone swimming on top of the towers there. Mrs. Claus (who really fills out a bikini nicely, if I do say so myself) gets vertigo, but even she thought that it was a pretty exciting place to hang out. I, myself, ate about a dozen popiah rolls every day in your fine city (got to keep up my figure, you know!), and we also enjoyed the views from the Gardens by the Bay.

At any rate, I've decided to contract out some of my deliveries this year, and that actually means that your gift should be arriving well before Christmas Day. As it turns out, bringing it myself would have taken from 4 to 6 weeks (!!), and that's cutting things too close for comfort.

You've obviously put a lot of thought into your wishlist, but some of the items were a bit tough to source. No matter-- I spotted something there that I know you'll enjoy.

So anyway, you can make the call on whether or not you want to open your gift right away, or wait until late December.

Merry boardgaming!

Here's my reply,

Subject: Re:Ho Ho Yo

Hi Mr and Mrs SC,

Wow... I thought I would never have gotten a letter from Santa. It seemed that all the good boys and girls were taken care of and I thought I was listed as naughty and punished...

Both of you even been to our Garden city too! Please let me know if you ever decide to pop by to visit again, we will be glad to host you. Apologies for the late reply as we were having our usual board games sessions on Tuesday, playing some new games for the first time (Notre Dame and Planet Steam) and well as some old games (7 Wonders) from a guy in our gaming group, Michael (Heishiro1976).

You even tried the local dishes! To visit Marina Bay Sands, meant you and Mrs Claus were probably here not too long ago since it was built in 2010. Sorry to hear that Mrs Claus would get vertigo at the pool on top of the towers but the view is one of the nicest there, especially over the business district. There are many other nice food around here, do give us an opportunity to have a meal with you if you and/or Mrs Claus ever visits Singapore again.

So my guess would be that you are based in US/Canada since you are half way around the world, so likely we are 12 hours apart. Sorry for the hard to source wishlist. I did trim the wishlist down to be more targeted.

Do hope to hear from you and will be good if you would reveal yourself! Take good care and thanks for the note!

With warmest regards,
Eugene

I got yet another reply but since it is past midnight here, will just have this up and post my reply first thing tomorrow. Would not want to write a letter to Santa when I am barely able to focus or open my eyes.

Subject: Re:Ho Ho Yo

Santa wrote:
Mrs Claus is (not-so) secretly resentful of all of the worldwide press that I get. Thanks for including her in your reply.

You can't even imagine the depths of naughtiness that some people on my list have sunk to. *shudder* You're an angel in comparison.

Well I do get around. As a frequent-flier, I am well-known at most airport terminals around the world. My Air Miles card gets pretty hot in our off-season, when we're looking to relax and enjoy some sun and sand.

It warms my heart to know that you're playing boardgames with friends. But watch out-- LS Mikha'el (Heishiro1976) almost made it to my "naughty" list this year...

I've never met a shrimp or prawn that I didn't like.

You'd think that flying in an open sleigh in the early days of my career would have made her less nervous about heights. Go figure! She won't go anywhere unless she's inside an airplane, being served drinks by handsome air stewards during the flight. The hints about my large waistline and weight problems, and her constant flirting with those guys is kind-of a sore subject with me.

Mrs Claus spends all day on the computer, updating her "TripAdvisor" ratings of the newest hotels and restaurants that we've visited. She scored "Chinatown" in Singapore with a 5 star rating.

Good guess. The North Pole is claimed by Canada, but also by Norway and Russia. I do know that our postal code here is H0H 0H0, which conforms to Canadian standards, so there is that... The nice part about being at the top of the world, though, is that by turning myself 90 degrees here (in well under one second), I can be pointed on a different longitude and be the equivalent of 6,000 miles from my original direction if measured along the equator.

I appreciate the effort. I did look at your geeklist on the topic, and I liked the polls that you did on each game item. Good idea!

Well I do like my anonymitiy, but there is a clue in my response to your last question, before this one...

Thank you for your reply, Eugene. It's nice to get a letter that isn't just asking me for an X-Box at this time of year. Just part of the job description, I know, but it can get to you. That's why I over-eat. And I do have a weakness for milk and cookies.

Okay, I couldn't resist... So here's my reply,

Subject: Re:Ho Ho Yo

Hi Mr and Mrs SC,

Yeah! So good to hear from you even though you are so busy with life, presents, shipping, elves, reindeer and ESPECIALLY Rudolph! Are there dwarfs helping you too?

No problems about the inclusion of Mrs SC, it is a pleasure to know that both of you are working hand in hand together! Mrs SC sure play an important role in your life, making sure you get fed, kept nice and comfortable while you work to add sparkle into the lives of others around you, even those that are located so far away from you. Who can leave her out?

Haha... You are too kind with your words. I would never want to be on the wrong side with Santa. Imagine the trouble a naughty person will get with the airports. Might be barred from flying even. Speaking of which, what did Michael do to make it to your naughty list? surprise

Goodness, then both you and Mrs SC do need to come again, we can go around trying loads of different food. At least there are many different dishes to try here in Singapore since we are a very diverse group of people.

Let's not touch sore topics then. However, I am surprised by Mrs SC's rating of Chinatown to be 5. Would that be 5 out of 10? Might have been a place which I have never visited myself if it is 5 out of 5.

So you are really from Canada? Do give more hints as to where you are from? Will definitely love to keep in contact with you!

The Geeklist was done with the help of many of the contributors, without which the list would never be a success. Still working on the list so that it can hopefully be a form of resource to others who are contemplating getting the same game.

I am sure you are handling everything well. Plenty of food here in Singapore! Do fly by again, I am sure there is enough carrots for Rudolph and the rest of the Reindeer gang! Hear from you soon, going to hit the bed...

With warmest regards,
Eugene

greentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtrain

Now we are working on who Santa is...

Subject: Re:Ho Ho Yo

Hi Mr and Mrs SC,

This is my guess then based on 2 clues.

1. I really think you are a Canadian since you did use the correct postal code which is the way Canadians had their postal code.
2. You are one of the contributor to the Geeklist which I had created.

In that case, there were a few Canadians that posted there. However, there is only 1 Canadian who posted and is also participating in the 2014 Secret Santa. That person would be Jon Baxter (jgbaxter).

However, that would be really spooky since you posted twice on Geeklist and both were on the 31/10/14. The signup deadline was on 11/11/14. So you only knew that I was your target after.

If I am correct in my guess, then I would further guess that the package would be either Clash of Cultures or Nations. Then out of the 2 I would think it is the Clash of Cultures because it would seemed that you think more favourably of it.

Let me know if I am way off!

With warmest regards,
Eugene

I doubt they are drinking on the job though. Not much good alcohol in these parts of the world but who am I to comment since I do not drink myself. Maybe I could try to seek them out if you give me more details?

I am not sure if I have gotten the identity of you right too! Please do let me know? Thank you for checking in! Very much appreciated.

I received my gift from Secret Santa!

Well, finally got a SMS from the local online store today regarding the Secret Santa 2014 gift.

Hobby Games Mart wrote:
Hi Eugene there is a delivery for you by your Secret Santa. Can I check if we can deliver to you later in the afternoon?

At first I was a little fearful of what to expect. I just bought tons from them during their warehouse sales. So I was worried that there might be an overlap. One of the games which I failed to see on the sale was Five Tribes, I was the 11th person to step into the warehouse so Five Tribes was either sold off earlier or it was not in there in the first place.

So I suspect that Five Tribes would be the one that Santa pick after the process of elimination from my want list and what they have in stock.

Well, the gift was finally arrived and Happy the Bear got hold of it first.

I did ask the person who delivered what it was but to his credit, he refused to tell me before hand.

Hobby Games Mart wrote:
Its wrapped up so you just have to unwrap and find out haha

So here's a closer look at it.

Since Santa did give the permission to unwrap the gift (also it is to avoid the possibility I will buy the same thing for myself), here's a picture of it unwrapped. It is still kept in shrink for now to get me to play the other games I have first.

And yes! It is Five Tribes, the game I missed getting during the sale. Thank you Mr and Mrs Santa Claus and do hope you reveal yourself to me. Merry Christmas to your family too. This is my first time participating and will definitely come back the next year for more!

Now to hunt for the promo - Five Tribes: Dhenim...

greentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtrain

My guess that this will be the final reply from Santa,

Subject: Call off the elf hunt!

Santa wrote:
Hi Eugene-- Santa here.

I got a text message from Ernesto Elf on the weekend.
He had finished checking in every bar in Singapore but could not locate my missing helpers.
Then, as he's staggering back to his hotel room by way of the Helix Bridge, he hears a loud BURP!! (I can't stress to you enough how embarrassing this all is to relate!) that came from under the bridge...

There were Allister and Freedo, sprawled out on their backs.
The short version of their tale is that they've spent all of their return airfare money on booze and, according to Ernesto, the smell was something awful down there.

Ernesto rounded them up, got some coffee into them, and eventually coaxed the story from them:

It seems that they got hopelessly lost for several days, but did finally track down your address (they blamed their GPS unit, but we aren't buying that argument) and were able to get the package delivered (the only piece of good news that I am able to derive from this whole sordid affair).

They celebrated their success a little too hard, though, and mistakenly ended up buying Singapore Slings for everyone in the bar that evening.
They thought that they were supporting anyone who had a broken arm (2 people did, oddly enough) before it was pointed out to them that a Singapore Sling was, in fact, a cocktail.
They also did a poor job of converting Singapore dollars at the current exchange rate, which caused further grief when they discovered that they could no longer afford to fly home.

Ernesto maxxed out his credit card and booked them all flights back to the North Pole. They should arrive back some time this evening, if the blizzard lets up for an while.

Allister and Freedo have already been put on immediate probation, and they'll be darned sick and tired of the mind-numbing work that the toy assembly line will bring them for the next five years, I promise you.

At any rate: I hope that you enjoy your gift, and that you have a Merry Christmas.

S.C.

Subject: Re: Call off the elf hunt!

Hi Mr and Mrs SC,

Well, guess this will be the last time I will be hearing from you then? Still not going to reveal your identity?

I am happy that all the elves are safe, don't work them too hard! I am sure everyone makes mistakes from time to time, even elves like Allister and Freedo! Glad that Ernesto got them back safely!

Do take good care and have a Merry Christmas, hope to see you soon or we can game together some day!

Apparently Santa is a Trekkie. Also, WTF Rudolph?!

Don't worry Chrohno
Be of good cheer
It's clear from your profile
You've been good this year

Through reading past posts
And some Facebook stalking
I think I know just
What'd be good for your stocking

Now I've got all the elves
Working hard on your list
But I have just one question
Which Star is the best?

Rudolph loves Star Wars, Jar Jar, and incest
Loves short furry creatures that drum on helmets

But I love Star Trek, sloooow plots, and special effects
Love stupid read shirts who don't know who'll die next

I'll need some convincing
So please make your case
Or I think an Attack Wing
Might end up at your place

Sincerely,

Santa

I need help deciphering my santas location! I've thought and thought for over a week and asked all my friends! It's time to turn to the BGG community.

I'm trying to figure out my Santa's location... I know it's in the lower 48. Here are the hints:

Quote:
I read your response, and I am happy to see you are ready to play my little game, fortunately Santa has the ability to go where he wishes, but from where I am, if I wanted to see you I would be traveling backwards into my past, but if you were to come visit me you would be traveling into your future, is this Santa on a different plane of reality you may ask, I do not know but if you ask the round faced boy who resides in the United Kingdom, maybe he can shed light on this question. What is the name of this wise child I am not certain but if you eat a lot of rice, or speak to a gladiator, or one of our grandfathers they maybe able to tell you, and remember, it's true that all bad things happen in threes, but so do good things. Where is your Santa can you see, turn to your right and I am there, although your sight is not as good as my lead reindeer, but maybe you may catch a glimpse if you squint. HO! HO! HO!

I guessed some games based on the hints but was completly stumped on a location. This is the response letter.

Quote:
Subject: Ho! HO! HO!
Oh Michael, Michael, my boy, there are no game clues in my previous letter yet, you must first answer a few of my riddles before your gift riddles begin, you must first overcome the first level before you go on to next. Think about it Michael, what does the name of the round faced boy have in common with rice and a certain named roman Gladiator. Tick tock times a wastin my boy. So tell me true where am I residing, take all the clues together, it will make sense. You will get the answer when your toys arrive, and by the way I was only in San Diego in my younger days when I served in the service to this country, yes even Santa is very patriotic.

Santa

I think the " my past your future" part is a reference to time zones. I would be traveling into the future if I traveled toward the East coast and he would be losing time if he traveled to toward the west coast.

Please help!

After receiving a preliminary gift (CoB expansion) from my SS, it seems that (S)He is cranking up the taunting to a solid 11.

I got a GM from the SS as follows:

"Ho Ho Ho!

Here's a clue for you to go to and fro....

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1273461/suitability-con...

In this thread be a hint. One of the commentators is a clue. Could I be one of them, or is one of them connected to me? It's up to you to figure it out and get one step closer to discovering your gift. But I will at least tell you that it has nothing to do with the flag they have displayed on their profile."

And then I got GMs from two of the three users who left comments on the thread as follows:

"A mousie got into a great Christmas pie,
Two little boys heard him, and then they did cry,
"O mousie! O mousie! come quickly away!
That pie is not for you, 'tis for our Christmas day."

Sooooooo, I have no idea what this means, am I to assume the third user who hasn't GM'd me the connection?

Hey there BGG users,

There seemed to have been a little pre-Christmas party "incident" at my Santas house, which destroyed his naughty and nice lists for the year.
So he is asking for some confirmation concerning me belonging on the nice-list.

I thought of getting some confirmations by the authorities, but well ... german bureaucracy ... I'd likely have to wait for next Christmas.

So I thought of something even better: the BGG community, because what would be more trustworthy and irrevocable than that? cool

So here's a little poll (I added both answers ... just in case, but you might want to remember: you're own Santa will probably find out, so be nice ... )

Huzzah! Until now Santa has been silent, but I'm sure that's just because he's so busy! The silence has been broken!

Yay Santa! However, I soon discovered the tracking number was incorrect! (It may have even given me a clue as to the real identity of Santa...ninja ) So late yesterday, this message came:

Well I've had some silent Santas over the last 2 years.. I haven't been particularly disappointed, but I knew there was more fun to be had with a vocal Santa.

But, this year!!! Yay!! I've had a wild time of trying to communicate through
- a broken call centre,
- union strikes
- and company collapses.

All in good fun as you'll see...

Santa's first message:

You will be assigned an Elf to work with your case file in due course. Your case file number is 30075993. Your Elf will take you through the GiftMatch (patent pending) process.

Please direct any communication to your Elf through your BGG profile page.

P.S Forgot to quote my case number - 30075993

My excitement was palpable when a got this from Santa soon after:

Your Elf will take you through the necessary paperwork required, firstly your "Naughty Or Nice Determination" (NoND), followed by the GiftMatch (patent pending) process itself.

The following are examples of behaviours/actions that may or may not affect your NoND in a positive manner:

* having a well filled-in Profile, with Wishlist, game ratings and comments.
* answering Mice&Mystics rules questions for fellow BGGers.
* quoting your case file number (30075993) in correspondence.

The following are examples of behaviours/actions that may or may not affect your NoND in a negative manner:

* participating in an alternative Christmas Wish program not run by Santa Inc. arrrh
* math trading away any game that your Elf rates a 10.

I asure you (30075993) that I like the international one WAY more and I'm trying to make up for it 30075993, by quoting my case number more often. I wonder why you like seeing the number so much!

As for trading away a "10". That was a slip. I got Twilight Struggle in return (unless you mean Cashflow 101 and NOT Le Havre surprise ) if that helps.

I promise to make it up to you by being way overly grateful and by pandering and brown-nosing and being grateful.. and thankful.

Love your work Santa

P.S Reverse stalking about to commence - Le Havre rated a 10; how many people would have done that?! (have you by chance, designed a microbadge before? or perhaps have something in common with one Bilbo Baggins?)

Matt

But then i didn't hear anything for 2 weeks until just yesterday an explanation arrived:

Quote:
Subject: Sorry about that
Hi Matt

My name is Arthur Elfridge, until recently of Santa Inc.

I would like to apologise for the incompetent handling of your Christmas wishes by the buffoons at Santa Inc, my former employer.

It all started in January this year, when a group of bureaucratic elves came up with the idea of privatising the running of Christmas to help with efficiency.

Now Santa, bless his heart, always likes to listen to ideas from his elves, and never shuts an idea down without giving it a go. Although I think this time he should have made an exception!

So the contracts for Wishes were given out to many competing firms through a tender process. Santa Inc was one of these firms, and I believe you have encountered another firm through the AU/NZ exchange. I see you have recieved a gift from them already, so I can only assume that either they are more competent than Santa Inc, or more likely you had the good fortune to be at the front of the queue.

Speaking of queues, I see that you got to the front of Santa Inc's queue several times, only to be cut off and sent to the end again. The sheer volume of Christmas Wishes was overloading the system. And the longer the delays went on, the more complaint calls came flooding in, further overloading the system!

You see what the bureaucratic elves were really good at were things like having meetings, coming up with business slogans, writing "standard operating procedures", generating useless case file numbers, and forming committees. They built a lovely automated queue system to make things nice and efficient and fair. The queue system was so well designed that it had safety features that kicked in in the event of an overload.

And what did the idiot (humans) running Santa Inc do about the problems? Two things: have more meetings (and more committees) to discuss the problems, and give themselves large payrises. (Oh yes, the firms were run by humans, not elves - we discovered when we tried to set up the firms like Santa Inc that an Elf is not legally allowed to be the Director of a company!)

You know what really grinds my gears though? There was never any need for an automated queue system. There was no need for any queue whatsoever! BECAUSE ELVES EXIST OUTSIDE OF THE LIMITATIONS OF YOUR TIME AND SPACE! How else do you think we manage billions of gifts?

Sorry - thinking about that foolishness gets me very angry.

Anyhow, things were getting worse and worse, and we couldn't reach Santa for help. He often is unreachable at this time of year, as he is doing research on all the new toys around. Eventually the rest of us elves (who remembered that Christmas is about more than efficiency!) all decided to up and leave, and set up our own operation, at least until we can track down Santa.

I wonder how long the fools at Santa Inc will continue going along to their meetings before the realise 98% of their workforce has disappeared? laugh

So anyhow, just wanted to let you know that we are getting things back on track. We have set ourselves up a secret base in an undisclosed location, and are working on hacking back into Santa Inc's servers. They may be the worst people in the world to be running Christmas, but they did have some amazing technology we would like to leverage - the NaughtyOrNice Determinator, and the GiftMatch (PatentPending) system.

So Merry Christmas! And you'll be hearing from me again soon.

Yours,

Arthur Elfrdge, Elf.
30075993

PS: Please direct any communications for me through your Profile Page.

So Santa Inc. is going belly up, and none too soon.

I wrote back soon after:
Quote:
1/12/2014:
RE: Santa Inc impending shutdown

Dear Authur Elfridge

Thank you for your unwavering kindness. It's good to know that the brains of the business can still get access to the tools and data of the business.

Hopefully, Santa Inc will have a fire sale when they realise they have no workforce, and then you can buy the rest of the infrastructure cheaply.

I think you'd make a great CEO, for what it's worth; you seem to value customer satisfaction more highly than most human-run corporations.

I look forward to hearing the progress of your adventures even more than the story of my gifts from Santa.

stay well

Matt

It's been a great journey, I will post new information as it comes through. I am very lucky and blessed that Arthur takes his stuff seriously, and would learn some hacking and subterfuge skills just to ensure that I get a cool present!

Enjoy Christmas everyone!

Last week got a new message from Santa.

"Because We Care"
Proudly Fulfilling Christmas Wishes Since 2014

Hello Matt

My name is Theodore B Boomhauser III, and I am the outgoing CEO of Santa Inc.

Just wanted to let you know that there has been a small technical problem with your Christmas Wish, in that Santa Inc has been shut down and the Liquidators are here loading all our equipment onto a truck.

Unfortunately this means we will not be able to assist with your Christmas Wishes at this time. Better luck next Christmas!

I am just in the office picking up my severance package, holiday pay and long service payout, before boarding my private helicopter to my private yacht, which will take me to my private island, and thought I would drop you a line.

I don't want you to worry about me though, the LiquidATORS TELL ME dADDY'S MONEY IS VERY SAFE IN THE cAYMAN iSLANDS ACCOUNT.

kIND rEGARDS

tb bOOMHAUSER iii

ps: i AM NOT SURE WHY MY LETTERS HAVE GONE BIG ALL OF A SUDDEN. mY SECTRETARY miSS eLVERS USUALLY WRITES MY LETTERS FOR ME, BUT SHE DISAPPEARED INTO THIN AIR (LITERALLY), ALONG WITH THE REST OF MY STAFF, ON mONDAY.

Funny stuff.. unless you are an ex-Santa Inc employee. I wonder if bOOMHAUSER has seen the movie "Fun with Dick and Jane"

Latest message, thankfully from the very helpful Arthur.
Quote:
Subject: Progress!
Hi Matt

You were right! Santa Inc folded and we were able to pick up their equipment for a steal. I sure hope that Boomhauser got was was coming to him, but I have a feeling he'll be living it up in the Cayman Islands by now.

Anyhow, just wanted to give you an update. Your Naughty or Nice Determination (NoND) went through very well, you came in at a very commendable 93.4% nice, well over the acceptance criteria.

So the next step is to run the GiftMatch (patent pending) algorithm. This is where the GiftMatch (patent pending) machine takes all the info available for you and computes the perfect gift. The Internet has made this part of our job so much easier. It used to take us so long to manually cross reference all our paper documents. The GiftMatch (patent pending) process is however quite variable in how long it takes - I have seen it take anywhere from 45 minutes to 8 months.

I don't anticipate problems with you though, as it has lots of info to go on. My only concern is that I think the device may have been damaged during transport by the Liquidators. The first two times I ran it for you it came out with something called W.W.B. The next time it came out with Monopoly: Le Havre. So we're getting an Elf Technician in to have a look at it. Hopefully she'll be able to fix it in a jiffy.

Yours,

Arthur Elfridge

PS: Sorry about the delay in getting back to you - I had actually sent you an email, but I just realised I sent it from the year 2114, which I'm afraid won't do you much good. Not being bound by the limits of time and space sounds good in theory, but believe me, it still has its problems! It can get very confusing!

Come to think of it, I also sent you a Christmas card. Now I'm wondering if sent that in the right timeline. I guess we'll see!

This is getting interesting. At this point I've had so much fun that I'm happy to get W.W.B just for the joke.

thanks again Arthur Elfridge

So I have a pretty awesome santa! They've been very vocal from the start and have provided amusing updates with my ever growing re-re-re-re-re etc. subscription to 'Santa facts'!
I am currently at uni and my parcel was delivered to my home so santa has been giving me clues!
The first one I got with a little help: "a nicely rounded pie without any ecstasy"
Spoiler (click to reveal)
answer is 'Three' (pie without the 'e' (ecstasy) rounded)

They said this clue was to do with magnitude, so I'm guessing its 3 games? (Lucky me )

The second clue has completely stumped me and this is where I need your help. It's "Coffee house disaster" and i've been told that it's a lot more specific!

The third clue I've made some headway on, it's "Not a speedy gelding". My first guess was Colt Express but that would be a speedy gelding ... hmm.
Any help would be much appreciated!

I have had a couple of notes from one of Santa's helpers, (elf) Hermey, now.

I figured that I should post something here so that my Secret Santa knows that I have got the messages. Assuming that he/ she is stalking my contributions, that is!

The last geekmail was as follows:

Hermey wrote:
Subject: Brrrrrr
Sorry for the silence. We got snowed in and couldn't get to the roof to adjust Frosty's arms for a better internet signal. But there is some good news! We did manage to get a package sent in your direction. I apologize that we weren't able to use any of our independent people this year. There's more people than elves these days and we're getting overwhelmed.

Hopefully this first box will arrive in a week or so and you'll be able to celebrate it's arrival. I think your friends at the pub will enjoy them, even if you have to trick them into playing.

But I've gotta get going. The bumble is yelling about going to The Island of Misfit Toys store which closes in an hour. Believe it or not, he's not very pleasant if he doesn't get his way. We lose elves every year when we have to give him his annual bath. But I'll be in touch again soon once I have more information about your other package.

Cheers,
Hermey

In reply, I'd just like to say that it I haven't noticed any delays myself. Being in Canada, I am well acquainted with the problems that extra snow on the roof, and in the streets, can bring.

I'll be sure to post an item in the "What my Secret Santa got me" geeklist, once any package does arrive.

And I'll thank my Secret Santa, and Hermey, in advance. Thanks!

Well today brought an update, by geekmail, assuring me that my packages (!) were close to being delivered. That is excellent news, indeed.

Hermey the elf confided in me that he likes to read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas as a bit of a holiday tradition.

That put me in mind of this, which people who do not frequent "Chit-Chat", here on BGG, may not have seen.
So here's a small present to the rest of the lurkers on this geeklist:

We have had so much fun with our Santa! He's let us know today that our gift/coal is on its way so we thought we'd post our interactions to show how well we've been taunted

Our first message from Santa came very quickly on the day the targets were assigned. Along with some general questions about our gaming likes/dislikes, Santa had this to say:

Quote:
I just browsed your wishlist and realized that both of you weren´t nice enough this year to get anything. Maybe next year.

Oh wow. We weren't expecting that. Maybe we haven't been perfect this year, but for Santa to say we'd get nothing? We must have done something awful. We decided the best way to change his mind was out and out pleading

Quote:
We’ll try harder, we promise! There’s still time before Christmas to mend our ways!

But Santa was having none of it

Quote:
Every year there is someone who thinks that being a nice guy for the last 2 months will help getting more stuff from Santa. I am soooo sick of this. That´s why I do my check every year in mid of July. After that there is no turning around my decision. But yes, you SHOULD try harder. For next year!

Yikes! He's really sticking to his guns here. Although he did relent where the children are concerned

Quote:
Ok, I will find something for them as they were pretty amazing this year. Well, at least as I checked in July.

He apparently softened (a bit) towards the end of this message when he wrote:

Quote:
My elves are weak and told me I should not be that mean and send Geraint at least "something". Nah, I don´t know. I have some broken pens here, maybe he has some fun in fixing them? He could use them to...eh...write down stuff. That should be enough.

Now it was at the end of this message that we noticed something odd. Santa had signed off his first message with 'hej da' which a quick google translate told us was Swedish for bye-bye. A Swedish Santa! Very cool, we thought. But here Santa was obviously trying to keep us guessing, as the bottom of this second message was signed - Au Revoir.

Ultimately Santa relented and we received this message next:

Quote:
Ho ho ho,

Santa has finally decided what you´ll get. I just have to wait for one thing to arrive and then i´ll have to find out the cheapest way to get it to you.
I looked into some stores near you and realized that games are pretty expensive in UK. surprise
It is in fact cheaper to buy stuff here and ship it through Europe

Inside the package you will find a note that´ll tell you how to proceed.

I would really like to see a reply in the Secret Santa Geeklist, as there is also something in the package that will be a surprise and I just suspect that you might like it, but I´m not sure about it. So, it would be great to get some feedback on that.

Viele Grüße,
Santa

P.S.: Be patient, the elves aren´t that fast at crossing the ocean.

What? So now Santa is German? This is becoming more and more of an elaborate prank with each message. We were happy to hear that Santa had made a decision on what to send us (even though it was probably coal from what we had previously inferred) but this was getting confusing!

We posted this to our profile in response

Quote:
Well December is here Santa. We expect you must be very busy making preparations for delivering presents to all the good gamers across the world. Whether that includes us, or whether we get a sack of coal, remains to be seen. If Geraint does receive the broken pens then he will do his best to fix them up and use them to write a better set of resolutions for next year, so maybe Santa will look more kindly on us?

The sherry will be waiting for you when you arrive (hic)

Safe journeys

Geraint + Rhyannon

And Santa had not finished having fun with us yet!

Quote:
Yes, I´m indeed very busy getting all the presents to the good gamers.
When I´m done with that, I´ll get back to you two

Ha - thanks Santa

This message was signed in Italian - he really does want to keep us on our toes

Santa's final message came yesterday, with a very specific - nay eccentric - set of instructions for opening our gifts:

Quote:
Ho Ho Ho there,

your sacks of coal is on its way.
On each sack there is an envelope with a number and a name.
Let him/her open the first envelope, read the letter and then open the sack to enjoy the coal.
Don´t open all at the same time, this is no race! And don´t you dare open anything until everyone is gathered around and you ´ve provided a suitable christmas atmosphere. Maybe sing 10-15 christmas songs to get in the mood. Or dump 20 tons of fake snow in the front yard, build some snow men, buy a christmas tree, eat a goose! Or...I don´t know, dimming the light should do the trick.
There is just one problem. My elves informed me that there was a terrible mistake with the letters. Somehow everyone forgot to put the words MERRY CHRISTMAS in there. So you have to make up for this oversight. Maybe you could all shout MERRY CHRISTMAS every 30 seconds while playing with the coal.

I used Santas favorite game store to handle the shipping. Which is pretty nice of them to do this, because I didn´t get the coal from them
The best about the shipping via a game store is that they use priority reindeer inside europe. So with a little bit of luck it arrives on friday.

So, before I forget it again:

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Best regards,
Santa, the Secret

I feel sure that whatever is ultimately in store for us, we're going to have fun with it when it arrives. Thank you to our Santa for making our first BGG Secret Santa so interesting and so much fun! We hope your Santa was as good to you
