I list the game entry that is the inspiration for this list. We bought this game and it arrived last Friday, and we played it in our Friday night games session. It took an hour to explain the rules, and has one of the worst rulebooks I've ever seen (the only two I can think of that are worse were Robinson Crusoe and 51st State). We had to skip one whole section as it made no sense, and come back to it at the end. When I wrote it up in my Friday Night Gaming blog I came in for a lot of comments, criticising me for even considering learning a new game on the fly at games night. So my question is, how do you learn a new game when it arrives? Do you sit down with it, read the rules, open it up and work through a few sample turns solo, then watch a rules video on BGG etc etc, as those people were suggesting - or do you do what I just did, open it up and play?

The other part of this, is how often you play new games? Is the majority of your gaming trying out new things, or do you mostly stick to familiar games.

(What percentage of your games played this year have been new to you - if you log game plays and can be bothered to work it out?).

I think we are all regular participants on the "New to your Kids" monthly geeklist. How is it different introducing new games to your kids? Are they as keen to try new games? If it's a new game you've bought, do you include your kids on the first play? How do they cope with rules explanations?

And what about new things outside gaming? Have you or your children taken up any new hobbies or activities with the new school year? How are they working out?

Star Realms still heads the list this week, with two sessions with my cousin, and one with my husband, totalling 10 games. Still loving it! I picked Panamax as my entry though, as my new game this week, played twice - once with 4, and once with 2. On top of that there were a few games with my sons, while my husband was working on Saturday and my daughter out at a hockey match - and also another game in our Sunday HeroQuest series. I also played a couple of games with my husband, but not many as he had to work late most days last week, and then most of the weekend too.

Gaming with other adults:

10 x Star Realms
2 x Panamax

1 x Apples to Apples, Carcassonne, Forbidden Island, Settlers of Catan (I didn't win the game because I threw a 7 on my final turn, losing half of my huge pile of about 16 cards. Next time I am not going to say "Only a 7 can stop me!" before I roll - it was just asking for it really!)

Gaming with my children:

1 x Gulo Gulo, HeroQuest, Pictionary Junior, Well you Bowled

Games played with Miss B...
* Coup - is it wrong that a 7-year-old likes Coup so much?!
* Penguin Pile-Up - found cheap at a charity shop, this is very silly and I am terrible at it!

With adults...
* Port Royal - definitely settled on liking this now.
* Coin Age - great for a quick play when meeting a friend at a local coffee shop.
* Qwirkle - a popular one with the wife, and I love the chunky pieces (though not so much the sometimes-ambiguous colours).
* A Piece O' Cake - just introduced this to the lunchtime crew and it went down very well.

On my own...
* Town Center - newly arrived, I had a couple of goes using the solo rules and it's an enjoyable puzzle; looking forward to playing it with others.

Edit: to add a geek link that I had forgotten

Only three games last week:

Can't Stop
The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game (solo)
Qwixx

But I'm planning to play more games in December, as I made an entry in An Advent of Christmas Gaming Challenge - 2014!

We've mentioned Friendless' extended stat site in this week's list, and for the longest time, I mean like a solid year, Friendless has listed Battle Line as my top "You Should Play This" game. Nearly two years since my last play, I finally got Battle Line to the table this past week.

Now at the top of my "You Should Play": the incomparable Amun-Re. Here's hoping thumbsup

3x -5- Gulo Gulo
2x -7- Battle Line
2x -5- Can't Stop
2x -6- Hamsterrolle
2x -7- Montgolfiere
2x -8- Tzolk'in
2x -7- Web of Power
1x -4- AquaSphere New to me - A depressingly underwhelming first play. Almost a caricature of what a Feld critic would mockingly invent, where he to design a Feld Point Salad game. Well, I rated Castles of Burgundy a -3- after my first play, and it now sits in my Top Twenty. So I remain hopeful. shake
1x -6- Augustus
1x -7- Bruges
1x -5- Cartagena New to us Reminded me of Billabong, from last week. It was light fun.
1x -7- Chicken Cha Cha Cha
1x -6- Historia New to me Totally provisional rating. My kind of game, weight-wise. But way longer than I like a game to run. Not sure about the replay value either, as there doesn't seem to be a wealth of deep strategies. Historia might become a game I enjoy playing a couple times a year. Which would be great thumbsup
1x -7- Ivanhoe
1x -8- Lost Cities
1x -8- Love Letter
1x -8- Medici
1x -6- Memoir '44
1x -5- Richard Ritterschlag
1x -6- Rondo
1x -7- Stone Age
1x -8- Ticket to Ride
1x -8- Yspahan

My in-laws have left for Taiwan, and that grinds gaming to almost a halt. I do miss the daily Cockroach poker sessions...
On the plus side, I tried a few new games last week. Best of these was Pastiche, which I got in a math trade. Quite a beauty. But Throne of the World (very messy artwork, but a decent enough game) and Time Masters were also fine.

4 x Cockroach Poker
3 x Machi Koro
2 x Diamant
2 x Where is Pluto
1 x A la carte
1 x A la carte: Dessert
1 x Duck, Duck, Bruce
1 x Kakerlakensalat
1 x Osaki ni Shitsurei Shima-su!!
1 x Pastiche
1 x Stake Your Claim
1 x Throne of the World
1 x Time Masters

1 x Unpublished Prototype
