On Saturday, November 8, 2014, 19 friends and family members gathered to help Andy celebrate his 50th birthday. Half a century! Wow! It's clearly a milestone that is definitely worthy of a Big Game Saturday™ CBBS gaming event.

Andy's niece and nephew, Heidi and Lucas, joined Kimmy and Andy in a couple rounds of Spot it! before the CBBS guests arrived. This is a surprisingly fun little game that makes a pretty good straggle in game. Except no one was straggling in when it was played...

Tim arrived first around 12:00 noon. Even though he was first to arrive, it was much later than he usually shows up at regular CBBS game nights. Nyck, Jerry and Shawn were right behind him, so they all joined Andy in several rounds of Ligretto to limber up their minds and bodies.

After the first round, Ian arrived, so room was made at the table for him to join. Leif and CCW Scott showed up at the start of the next round, and Eric3 made his appearance for the last two rounds.

Ligretto gets real crazy when playing with lots of players. With all three sets (red, green, blue) up to twelve can play. So with nine people jammed around the table, the action was pretty frenetic.

After six rounds, Tim was able to power his way to a score of +57, only going negative in one round. Andy and Jerry tied for second, with +15 each. They were the only players to reach positive scores.

The least negative was CCW Scott at -2, then Leif (-6), Ian (-7) and Nyck (-8) with progressively lower scores. Bringing up the rear were Eric3 (-13, in only two rounds) and Shawn, with -17.

Leif, Shawn and Jerry joined Andy in a game of Railways of Europe. Shawn got off to a quick start, building a good network in the north-central Europe that let him get his engine going without going in too much debt. Jerry was building in Spain, and was getting some points, but had to take a lot of debt to get his network built. Andy had plans to work central to north Europe, but didn't pick a good starting location, and took too long to get things going. And Leif started in northwest Europe, starting slow, but finishing strong for the win.

Leif ended up with 71 points, and completed his Baron card (points for connections to Moscow). Unfortunately for Andy, Leif's need to build in Russia ended up conflicting with Andy's Baron card (building a link from St Petersburg to Vienna). So Andy ended up being shut out on his Baron card, and ended with a paltry 54 points.

Shawn's quick start somehow stalled a bit, and he ended in third with 68 points. Jerry, despite his crushing debt, managed to get second with 69 points. He tried to argue that Lisbon was a Spanish city, and thus claim another two points for his Baron card, but after a short geography lesson from the rest of the players, he conceded, and accepted his second place finish.

Tim, Ellie, Eric Classic and Eric3 sat down to play this new game, which is supposed to be based on mechanics taken from 51st State.

The score sheet only includes the final scores: Ellie won with 48, followed by Tim (43), Eric3 (40) and Eric Classic (36). Perhaps one of the players will provide some additional information.

There is photo evidence that this game was played, but alas, no score sheet was submitted, despite the score pad being RIGHT NEXT TO THEM!!! So we'll never know what happened.

The same crew that was not able to complete a score sheet for Helios managed to meet their obligations for their second game of the day. CCW Scott scored 120 points, while Ian and Nyck tied for 110 each. We will assume that means CCW Scott wins, and congratulate him accordingly.

Tim convinced Eric3, Ellie and Nyck to try out one of his new acquisitions. Not much information was provided on the score sheet, and what little was there was nigh unintelligible. It appears that Tim won with 10 points, Eric3 and Nyck had 8 each, and Ellie scored 6. But Tim's score is annotated with some scribbles that look like 'beard, most tails'; and Eric3 has similar scribbles that might say 'bark, most vilkes'.

I'm sure in the world of Castle Dice, having a beard and the most tails is much better than having bark and the most vilkes.

Alan showed up just before the next reconfig, so he joined Andy, Shawn, Leif and Jerry in a game of Shogun, including the Shogun: Tenno's Court expansion.

There is a lot going on in this game, so it took awhile for Andy to fully explain the game. But they did eventually start playing.

In the first year, Andy did well, spreading out over four provinces, and scoring several majority bonuses. But the start of the second year left him with a big bull's-eye on his back. Shawn was able to use that to his advantage, and squeak out a win with 43 points to Andy's 40. Leif finished a close third with 38 points, followed by Jerry at 34. Alan was unable to recover from an unfavorable starting position, and ended with 22.

Just before dinner, Elden and Suzie showed up. They played a quick game of Lost Cities while waiting for the other games to finish up.

Suzie and Elden joined Eric2, who made a surprise entrance after just getting back from a Judo competition in Seattle, CCW Scott and Ian to play Tulipmania 1637.

Eric2 bought and sold his way to $18,475 and a victory. Elden was right behind him at $18,150. Ian managed $16,500, and CCW Scott ended with $13,425. Suzie finished last with $11,825.

For the last reconfig of the evening, Leif, Suzie, Nyck and Alan played this game that I have never heard of.

Suzie is credited with II points (I assume they're points). Leif had I point. Nyck and Alan have nothing recorded, so I assume they scored nothing.

I could be completely wrong.

Ian used his 'connections' in the Boardgame retail market to gain access to this new highly sought after game. Eric2 and Tim joined him in the CBBS inaugural play.

Tim built the most awesome castle, scoring 127 points. Ian built a moderately awesome castle, scoring 110 points. Eric2's 71 points are evidence that his castle wasn't much more than a giant stone outhouse.

Andy, Scott, Elden, Shawn and Jerry decided to see who could do the best job of building a train line up the slope of Mount Snowden.

The last time this was played at game night, Shawn doubled everyone else's score. So Andy was determined to learn from the experience. The event cards are really critical, and getting cards that work together while making sure your actions support the bonuses on those cards is key.

Shawn and Jerry understood that, getting cards that helped them dig rubble, and cards with big rubble bonuses. Andy, CCW Scott and Elden didn't seem to get it, and were much less efficient.

This game was also very unusual in that only four event cubes were drawn the entire game! This meant very little rubble, track and building sites were removed. This allowed both Jerry and Shawn to score a ton of points with their bonus cards using rubble. Shawn's 63 bonus points powered him to the win (109 total). Jerry was right behind with 107 (56 in bonus). CCW Scott finished third with 84, Andy just behind at 82 and Elden took last with 72.

This game is likely to see a lot of play at CBBS events- the base game is proving to be very deep by itself, and with a lot of interesting looking expansions, it will take awhile to fully explore this game.

Although Andy actually owns two! legitimate copies of this great filler game, Leif chose to showcase his homemade print-n-play version. For the record, the CBBS does not sanction such shenanigans.

To end the night, ten gamers gathered around the main table to play the current favorite social game in the CBBS, One Night Ultimate Werewolf. This time they decided to use the 'tournament rules', and award points for victories. After 10 games, the final results were:

In the first three games, the werewolves won easily, as the villagers just couldn't figure out who was who. In game 4, the villagers finally figured out who was really a lying no good vile werewolf.

In game 5, Tim won as the minion, since both werewolves were in the middle. A really unimpressive win, given the situation.

Games 6 and 7 went back to the villager teams- perhaps we were getting better at figuring out things as the night went on?

Constance fooled everyone in game 8, when she revealed as the Tanner after the villagers were convinced she was a werewolf. The villagers then got one more win in game 9.

And in Game 10, Andy tried a different approach as Tanner- this time he didn't say a thing! It wasn't easy, but he just kept quiet, letting the others try to figure things out. At voting time, just enough villagers were tricked into believing he was a werewolf, and he secured the last win of the evening.

THANK YOU JERRY for the gift! I don't think I'm so old that shuffleboard is the only game for me, but it was very nice of you! I'll bring this to a regular game night soon, and see how you young whippersnappers hold up against an ornery old cuss like me!

THANK YOU ERIC CLASSIC!

I know I've groused quite a bit about how Star Trek never really had 'tactical combat' as a feature of the shows and thus this game doesn't make sense. So this made a great gift that I really appreciated! We'll definitely have to play when we get back from BGG.CON!

THANK YOU to everyone who attended and helped me celebrate #50! It's always a blast hosting events for the CBBS- you guys are all great.

And I owe a special THANK YOU to my wife Cindy, who once again took charge and made sure everyone had plenty of snacks and a delicious taco bar for dinner. If it weren't for her, I'd have been lynched by my guests many many Big Game Saturdays™ ago.

And I'm so glad that my daughter Ellie came back home from Eastern Washington University for the weekend. She's a really good gamer (see the Imperial Settlers score above). I didn't get a chance to play a game with her, but Thanksgiving and Christmas break are coming soon.

And Kimmy, although she doesn't like the crowds, did play Spot it! with me, and also did a lot to help get things ready.

All in all, I had a great birthday. I'm so glad I got to share it with family and friends!
