Let it not be said that I do not foolishly imitate any game-activity related meme that I find on the internet.

I liked the idea of putting a number of games from your collection aside to focus on those a little and play them more often than you'd normally would. So the idea of trying to play 10 games at least 10 times in the span of a year, appealed to me.

Before long, though, I realised that not only can I not simply pick 10 games from my collection and ignore the rest, but some of those games I already knew would never make it to the table 10 times in only 52 weeks. So I've sort of toyed with what I think the "rules" for this 10x10 challenge is, and put my own spin on it.

I mostly tried to focus on games that I want to play more often, but simply haven't because other, "shinier" and newer games suddenly landed in my lap.

The very first game that came to mind.

There is one player in my group who utterly refuses to play this game (after one very frustrating experience) and another who's happy to explore any and all alternatives before considering this game. Since I generally don't pick the games when I host our weekly game night, I've rarely had the chance to play Cosmic Encounter in my own home. Here's hoping that 2015 will be different.

Cyclades was the second game that immediately came to mind. It's a game I've enjoyed quite a bit whenever I got it on the table, yet for some reason it's rarely suggested at our weekly game night. I don't think it's because people don't like it (as is the case with some players and Cosmic Encounter), but because most people don't remember what it's like.

This game mostly shot to the top of the list, due to the expansions, which I haven't taken as much advantage of as I want. I quite like the game, although I still need to tinkerwith the various optional and variant rules as our last game took far longer than it should have.

And this is the first game, where I start to bend the rules a little.

Civilization is a great game. It is also a very long and intense game. I know I am never going to get it on the table 10 times in a single year, not least of all if I want to use some of the bits and pieces of its two expansions.

So I opted to just go for 5 plays in 2015, but will make up the difference by adding another game to the list.

That other game is Archipelago.

Admittedly it isn't that much lighter fare than Civilization, but it does focus a little less on plotting and calculating and more on interaction. Which in my experience makes the game at least feel a little lighter in play.

This game kicked Ghost Stories off the list. As it is a game that hasn't seen much play, and I think if I get 10 plays out of it, I will know whether it should stay in my collection or not.

I like this game. Although it does have a steep learning curve. Not because its rules are so complicated, but because it takes a few plays to figure out what kind of game it is.

Dominare might look like an area control game about holding and defending your VP fortress, but once you reach the wild power swings of the last few turns, you realise it isn't.
It might look like a random, card-driven "take that"-type of game, but once you've seen somebody pull off a clever VP grab that's been build up over 3 turns, you realise it isn't.
And it might look like a race to a VP finishing line, but once you've seen a player lose 25 VP in the last turn (and almost flip the table in anger), you realise.... this is a gem of a game, that can only be appreciated through repeated plays.

It has been over a year since I've last played this game. It is still one of my favourites, even if it has been collecting dust on the shelf. Based on the suggestions of some of the players in my weekly gaming group, I've added it to the list. Albeit in a limited capacity, i.e. 5 plays only.

The other 5 plays belong to this card game. I've played it only rarely, and it didn't really start to click for me until my most recent play (which is a few months back already), but I think there's some mileage left in this stack of cards.

Admittedly, it also made it on the list to increase the chances of me actually completing said challenge. A card game like Di Renjie is more likely to accrue its 5 intended plays, than a heavy-hitter like Civilization.

Another card game that plays comparatively quickly. It's also an intriguing and challenging co-op game with a fun theme. Also.. it's new to my collection.

I have both this edition and the follow-up, but for the purposes of this challenge, I consider them a single game. I quite enjoyed the few test games I've had so far and I doubt there'll be any difficulty in getting 10 plays out of those card sets.

There's a good chance it'll be notably more than 10.

It's a cute, puzzle-type game with some take-that attitude to it. It hasn't seen much play, and I think it deserves a little more attention and/or love.

Replaced by Legacy - The Testament of Duke de Crecy

Another great game.

It's probably the only game I am not 100% about as it does see play with some regularity, but I couldn't make up my mind as to which game should get put on the list instead.

If there should be any sudden or unexpected addition to my collection, this will probably be the game that will have to budge to make room for that new, under-appreciated gem.
