My annual Arkham Horror game with the Arkham 8 (sadly, Lawson was missing), but this pure social craziness is always worth it. Eight players, all expansions!

And we won.

1. Mysterium (Tajemnicze Domostwo) - This is a game that wasn't even on my radar going in, so it was a really pleasant surprise. It feels completely different from any other game I've ever played, combining Dixit-like silent picture communication with an actual cooperative murder-solving goal. I'm glad I managed to buy a copy before it sold out.

2. Roads and Boats - I'm really glad I had a chance to play this one at last. The feeling of epic-ness was increased by the fact that we had to split up the game into three sessions to accommodate the puzzle hunt and the closing ceremony.

3. Not a board game, but the puzzle hunt was fantastic. I've done several puzzle hunts in the past, ranging from one-hour Real Escape Games to the multi-day MIT Mystery Hunt, and I think this was one of the most fun.

Such friendly-looking alien fish-snatchers!

We saved the fish! And got nice souvenirs laugh

3rd year at BGG Con. I usually tend to play as many Essen releases as I can at this Con, as I am at heart a Europhile. While I was not as impressed with the Essen offerings this year as I was the previous 2 years, I still enjoyed myself. (Side Note: I feel this GenCon had way more interesting releases to me than in the past, so all in all a good year of new games).

Castles
Drafting, tile placement with both public common goals and private hidden goals.
CoMKL game upgrades a very good game (Suburbia) to a great game. Ted came by to get some feedback, answer questions, and very politely point out the rules we had implemented slightly wrong (so embarrassed!). Here are a few things I really liked:
a) 1/4 or less of the bookkeeping from Suburbia
b) Aesthetically pleasing to see your castle slowly take shape, knowing that your castle would most likely be unique to any you may have seen on previous plays(funky designs from to "T" to "B")
c) Player determined market
d) Streamlined scoring compared to Suburbia (although I do like the balancing act of reputation and money that is not present here)

Deus
Tableau building with a feather-light Civ theme, medium-weight Euro.
My most anticipated game to play coming to BGG Con and I came away impressed in many areas, while not sure how I feel in other areas. I really liked the puzzle of figuring out how to optimize my card/ building plays to trigger my tableau in the most beneficial way. Mitigating bad card draws is often hard for me, but this game provides so many avenues for doing so that it never feels disheartening. It is so satisfying playing a fourth or fifth card of a certain type/ color building and getting four or five actions which completely change the shape of the board or your personal supply.

Colt Express
Programmed movement, variable player powers.
Beautiful game with a great theme that was well implemented. I enjoyed this one, more than my normal gaming tastes would suggest. It is not nearly chaotic as I imagined going in, due to the game having a decent amount of open information and a mostly set turn order. The hidden actions and the variable of when they are played (not to mention the chance for the last card to be played in reverse turn order) add a great deal of suspense and fun to this game. While I don't think each character's powers are balanced upon first play, I also did not care one bit. Great fun, even when you're losing (AKA getting shot and punched mercilessly with glee).

I am going to hold it to top 1. I did very little gaming this year as my commitments to Team Geek took up most of my time.

But this one experience was pretty spectacular. Heavy pure economic game with many levers to use against other players. Difficult. Seemingly deep. The word "compelling" kept coming up at the table. Simple enough rules once you get them down which, admittedly, can take over an hour.

Also first game I've played with two men (well, first with one, the other I have gamed with on line but never previously face to face) and that was also a treat. All 4 of us at the table that night are intense and professional at the table and can make good moves from time to time.

I am hopeful that this is in fact a great and deep game. The purely linear computations involved throughout concern me as this tends to be a trait associated with economic games which prove to have only one viable strategy. But that is far from clear in this case and I remain optimistic.

The other problem where I played this twice last week and in neither case came anywhere near finishing is much less of a deal. I just plain didn't care at all. I suppose I will care if this continues to be a problem when I try it with the locals at home: not so much a matter of winning vs. losing, but more a matter of how will I know which strategic choices work if I never see the full arc of the game. Plus: I bet late game trade offs are very different from early game trade offs and learning the late game seems like a real good time as well.

I'm glad I got my copy and do not begrudge the fine folks at Funagain their $120 one bit.

Like many others, Mysterium was the hit of BGG Con for me. Slight Dixit comparisons aside, this game is like nothing else I've played. Beautiful artwork too.

Second and third were Castles of Mad King Ludwig and Historia. Lots of love for Ludwig, not as much for Historia. For me, it boils a Civ game down to the bits I want. Also really liked the art style, very 60's.

I'll jump on the Mysterium bandwagon. I know it's a pretty shallow game and if you dislike co-ops and Dixit this is a perfect storm of suck. I happened to like co-ops and Dixit, however, and I think this is going to be a huge hit with my family. The play is innovative and the artwork is beautiful.

My second favorite game wasn't a hot game at all, Olympos

I had never heard of it, but I really enjoyed my play of it. Nice integration of conflict.

My third favorite would have to be Castles of Mad King Ludwig

Again, not an incredibly deep game, but easily explained, fun and more interactive than meets the eye.

#3 is difficult to pick. I'm happy with all my new purchases: Imperial Settlers, Tajemnicze Domostwo, Kingsport Festival, Castles of Mad King Ludwig, Circus Train (Second edition), and Wir sind das Volk! all look promising.

as well as Amanda and my buddy Dave.

I did not expect to like Arkwright and I did not want to like Arkwright. It's long and it's expensive and I wasn't sure if it was even that good. Turns out I liked it a lot. So much so that after playing through both the intro game and the full game, I bought a copy to take home with me.

Other good times were finally learning and playing Terra Mystica with Dave who has wanted to play really badly and Thunder Alley to finish out the con.

Can't wait to come back next year!
