See this thread for more info and this list other people's lists.

Given how often I am able to play (aka not much) I know I'd never make it through the 10x10 challenge. However I was inspired by the idea to create my own challenge, namely 15 new games played in 2015 and then decide whether or not to keep them. Unfortunately I have many more games than that that remain unplayed in my collection. I tried to pick a good sampling of themes/genres, number of players and source (namely whether it was Kickstarted). My other goal this next year is to try and not buy any new game that is not an expansion of a current game (at least not until I get the majority of my Kickstarted games in and get rid of some games... essentially running out of space so I need to start being more selective).

Here's the "rules" I've come up w/ so far, some may change as it goes along...

- These are games I either currently have and haven't played or games I expect to get sometime in 2015 (primarily via Kickstarter).

- This is my first geeklist so if I understand how it works, each game will be an item. The list may change between now and 2015 but once 1 Jan '15 comes around hopefully I'll try to keep the list final.

- I leave the items open for comments if anyone wants to contribute anything. Once a particular game has a comment I'll leave that as part of the list (don't want people to contribute things and have it go away).

- I'll report when I receive the game, if I don't currently have it. When I get a chance to play it and my views on the game once played. If I get a chance to play it multiple times I'll report on that as well.

- At the end of the year I'll go back and make a final determination about whether or not I'm keeping each game on the list.

Owned: Yes... IIRC I received it as a gift SEVERAL years ago. Just never got around to playing it.
Players: I believe I have the pieces/parts for 6 players.

Initial thoughts: Really don't have any about this. This is truly one of the wildcards in my collection. As mentioned it was a gift/not something I probably would have purchased for myself. I never played that particular computer game so there was no attraction there. I suspect this one will be cut from the collection but we'll see.

Played: 2 Aug

Impressions: Not sure I should really consider it played since we only made it through about the 1/2 the game before we had to break up. Granted we were still learning it, but I'm not sure I buy the "2 hour" play time. There seems to be a lot of decisions that need to be made all through out the game that open themselves up to AP/delays at almost every step. Anyway, overall it was an enjoyable game. As Exparrot mentioned the who design feels a bit dated but that didn't detract too much from it.

The one negative that sticks out though, and it's really hard to tell at this point but, the balance seemed to be a little off... in retrospect though maybe the fact of randomness introduced by using dice for combat made the balance seem off. What I mean is the Egyptian player was pretty much rampaging through all the battles w/ his army or Mummies and the other two players really couldn't do much about it. They could be killed off but I believe the Egyptian player won every battle he was in (regardless of offense or defense). Even when he lost some he would win w/ others so he pretty much stayed w/ all of them in play/available for future battles w/o having to expend the resources to rebuild. He was rolling really well though. Whether or not there is a tactic the can put an end to that I'm not sure. The creatures that have bonuses against Mythic creatures seem to be fairly expensive and when going into battle against him it's just as likely we'll use something that kills off those creatures and then storm in w/ the Mummies. Have to try it again sometime w/ someone else trying the Mummies to see if it was just a matter of luck w/ the rolls.

Final Verdict: Hanging on to it for now since it is one of the few games I have that seem to be specifically designed for 3 people (or at least plays at its best w/ 3 people). Not sure how often it is going to get to the table though so I eventually may get rid of it.

Initial impression: Got this as light weight alternative to war games, which I like the concept of, but could never really get into. Reading through the rules I like the idea of having to balance between fielding a larger force but being closer to losing, or trying to give yourself more life and do things w/ a smaller set of units.

Played: 8 Feb

Impressions: Was exactly what I thought it would be, a light war game w/o a lot of nitty gritty details that can bog a game down.

Final Verdict: Keep (for now) in hopes of finding the right people to play w/

Initial thoughts: Kickstarted this based on the theme alone. Looking through the videos/reviews/rules though it looks like it might be a fun game to boot Unboxed and repacked it today. That took a little while but I was taking my time looking through the components as I went. Looks like it could be fun game, I foresee many mistakes in the first run through though

Played: 31 Jan

Impressions: The game looks a lot more complex than it plays, but as you play it you find it is really complex after all I'll write a review below later, but the short answer is; loved the game, happy I backed it, looking forward to playing it again.

Initial thoughts: Looks like an interesting/updated version of the old Mastermind game, except both players are actively trying to figure out the code. Due to a shipping fluke I ended up w/ two complete sets of cards, so I already have a modification in mind as far as mixing in cards from the second set so the distribution of symbols is not balanced. Probably should play it a few times first though...

Played: 8 Feb

Impressions: I should have said it was more like Concentration w/ a little bit of Mastermind added on. I think this could be a fun game w/ the right people, I'm not sure I'm one of those people though Added... while doing my write up I see I continued my tradition on never being able to play a game right the first time through and missed a major rule. I should really consider this play invalid at this point blush

Final Verdict: Probably going to give it to a relative who is more likely into this sort of game.

Initial thoughts: I saw/read about this game awhile ago, but the prices were always a bit expensive IMHO since the initial run sold out. I Kickstarted Wrong Chemistry hoping it would be similar... it isn't Fortunately they brought this back w/ an expansion. Looking forward to getting this one.

Played: 10 OCt

Impressions: Almost as much fun as it looks like. Granted it is hard to tell after only one play through (and we just played the base game, not the expansion) but it looks like a fairly simple game and played like a fairly simple game. My one hesitation is the fact there doesn't seem to be much in the way of a "catch up" mechanism. For what ever reason one of the players fell behind early in the game (just made some bad choices about which compounds to go after and which chemicals to keep). He was never able to recover from that. IIRC he finally ended the game a good 10-15 points behind everyone else (the other players were within 5 of each other, the top two players tied for which I didn't see a tie breaker rule... another limitation). Overall a fun game we are likely to play again. Hopefully w/ experience the falling behind won't be an issue.

Final Verdict: Keeper

Initial thoughts: Played Castle Panic a few years ago and enjoyed that. When I saw a zombie themed version I knew I had to get it. Was finally able to get a copy pretty cheap earlier this year... now I just have to get it to the table to see if it was worth it.

Played: Played 18 Apr

Impressions: Not a bad game, but was a little long for what it is (and that was getting lucky w/ getting survivors out early). More plays might yield better strategies, but it's probably something that's not going to be played very often.

Final Verdict: Keep for now, but probably only for certain occasions (like Halloween or something).

Initial thoughts: I've enjoyed the Eminent Domain games so far so hopefully this one will continue the streak. It is mainly on the list though to "balance" out the list wrt it's due out later in the year, it's one of the few 2 player games and it's the only "micro" game on the list. This one may be swapped out for something else.

Played: 3 July

Impressions: Played a couple of games since the first one was spent mainly trying to remember the basic design/concept of EmDom in general. Personally I think I like the full game better. It is a nicely designed/"tight" game wrt the various cards/actions you get and how to score victory points. However, it is another one of those games that just as it seems to be get going it is over. I guess that's the point of a microgame though Since we only played a couple of times it is hard to get a feel for all the machinations the game has to offer, but off hand it did seem colonization should be the preferred route over warfare. Perhaps a more experienced player could make warfare work, it didn't for us though (or we were playing something wrong, which is entirely possible too).

Final Verdict: Keeping... it is so small there is no reason not too

Initial thoughts: It really came down to either putting this or Myth on the list. The plan right now is once we finish the Pathfinder Adventure Card game we're going to give this a try to see if it'll be the new "campaign" game (gaming sessions usually always begin w/ a set game played every session and then whatever people want to play that day). I thought switching genres might be good, not to mention the rules for GD are a little more straight forward than those for Myth.

Played: 23 May '15

Impressions: The rules can be a bit intimidating when first reading through them, however it once you get into the game it goes fairly smoothly... although not w/o some problems/mistakes, see here.

Final Verdict: Can't wait to play more, looking forward to the rest of the expansions.

10. Board Game: Gothic Doctor [Average Rating:6.98 Overall Rank:5817]

Owned: Yes - KS version (finally )
Players: 4

Initial thoughts: I was disappointed when the initial kickstarter failed. I was glad they were able to get it up and running and succeeded the second time. Looks to be an interesting set collection game w/ a couple of "gotcha" elements. Plus the notion of 'treating' some of the classic horror monsters is pretty original IMHO.

Played: 30 Aug

Impressions: Overall it is exactly what I thought it would be (set collection w/ "gotcha" elements). The one thing I should have anticipated that I did not though is given the number of different treatments and number of patients, creating matching sets was really kind of hard. There were three people playing and we were only able to treat 6-7 patients each. Maybe that is more the norm, I thought it would be more though. Despite losing (the only good hand I ever had was taken away w/ an action card) and a couple of timing/card interaction questions we weren't sure about, I did enjoy the game. I think I need to play it more to see if the seemingly lack of things to do is the expected "standard" or an usual game/bad luck of the draw. The other odd thing, and maybe we just didn't shuffle the deck well enough, is the surprising number of legendary patients. At one point IIRC 4 or 5 of the 7 were legendary.

Final Verdict: Keep for now... may eventually end up on the chopping block depending upon how future plays go.

Owned: Yes... several versions (base game, GEV, Shockwave, Scenario book, Designers edition [non-Kickstarter... missed it ]) going back at least a decade... still haven't played it. Edit to add my garage is now complete. SJG picked up the slack and distributed the Nightfall counter sheets. Now I just have to get it to the table (or maybe floor ).

Players: 3

Initial thoughts: Who doesn't like an armed/armored death machine... Ok I guess maybe the people having to face it in hovercrafts or infantry, but that's why there's Ogre v Ogre combat Now having the Designer's Edition and several of the expansion models, hopefully I'll finally be able to get this to the table. Of course I'll have to make sure it fits on the table first

Played: 13 June '15 [solo]

Impressions: About what I thought it would be, a fun/light "war" game. I tried just the basic solo variation of a single MIII attacking a CP. The ogre was able to destroy most of the defenders on the way in and the CP. However, a few lucky shots from a howitzer did enough damage to the ogre's weapons that the remaining GEVs were finally able to finish it off. Looking forward to eventually playing it against someone and adding in all the other units/scenarios.

Final Verdict: Keeping

Owned: Yes (Kickstarter version)
Players: 2

Initial thoughts: Looks to be a pretty inventive game w/ some interesting resource management choices and PvP "combat". Of course I thought the same thing about Berserk from the same company but after a couple of plays that has not left the shelf.

Played: 15 Aug '15

Impressions: Where to start... at first glance this looks overwhelmingly complex. The visual design of the board alone is a fruit salad of color and confusion. Once you dig into it it starts to make sense and it's relatively easy to play. Then you try to figure out how to win and it becomes increasingly complex again. We "gave up" (not in frustration but because there were other games we wanted to play) after 2 hours and being no where near even the recommended 15 points of damage "beginners" end game.

Final Verdict: Keeping, not sure how often we'll break it out though.

Avatar
Owned: Yes... have owned this (and the expansion) for several years as well and it just never got to the table
Players: 5

Initial thoughts: Almost like a deck of cards in board game form. For those not familiar w/ it, a basic set of components given to various game designers and they were asked to develop a game w/ them. Aside from the "official" rules in the book there are many many more variations other players have come up with. Granted since it is a generic set of components the theme isn't going to be very strong so we'll see how it turns out. Overall I am more of a theme based gamer than a specific mechanic or into abstract games.

Played: 27 June 15

Impressions: Honestly not sure if I should write this up or not since we only tried one game out of the 8 (or so) in the two rule books, not to mention the 50 or so I d/l from BGG modest However, I'm going w/ what I can since I'm not sure when I'll be able to get it back to the table. We tried the "Stargate" game (guessing which card people picked) and overall people seemed to enjoy it. There was one person who just wasn't getting into it at all, but the others enjoyed the deduction aspect. We did think some sort of timer should be added to this particular game just to keep things moving. Also w/ 5 people and everyone only playing as the "encoder" once it became obvious about 1/2 way through the game that someone had a pretty much insurmountable lead and was going to win.

Obviously the theme is very light, and I suspect most of the games are going to be like that given the whole concept of it to begin w/. Overall though it was good to finally get this to the table. I'm going to hang on to it for awhile so we can hopefully try some of the other games over the next few sessions to see if as a whole it is worth keeping.

Final Verdict: Keeping for now until can play more of the games.

Owned: Yes - Kickstarter version

Initial thoughts: Kickstarted this before I got the Legendary Encounters game since I thought this would scratch that particular "Aliens" itch. I've enjoyed Legendary Encounters so far and this seems to be different enough that hopefully there's room enough in my collection for both.

Played: 11 Apr

Impressions: Gotten in 2 plays w/ 2 different groups so far. Lost the first one in the 4th round, but I know we played a couple of things wrong (if nothing else a couple of us didn't take our bonus cards at the beginning of the game). Second group won w/ less than 15 points. It does scratch a similar itch to the Legendary game, but I like the interaction and how the co-op plays out in this game better. A little worried long term it is going to turn into more a "puzzle" than a game though.

Final Verdict: Keeper

Played: 31 Jan

Impressions: Not very old but already feels kind of dated. Confusion over a couple of rules made for a less than enjoyable experience. Could maybe be improved w/ some tweaks but that would require keeping/playing it again, of which I plan to do neither.

BONUS GAME #1

Owned: Yes (Kickstarter)

Players: 2-5

Initial thoughts: Looked like a fun game w/ light versions of several different game mechanisms mixed together. Some auctioning for turn order, worker placement in the sense of planting peppers/resources, area control roughly in the sense of moving the worker around (ok maybe that's a bit of stretch). Gotta love the theme too though, I generally like spicy food so this was a natural to back on Kickstarter.

Played: 31 Jan

Impressions: To be honest maybe I over hyped it in my mind, but while it was enjoyable I wasn't as blown away by it as I thought I would be. I think we might have hampered the experience a bit by the way we played however. I'll do a full write up below later.

Final Verdict: Keeping it, but reserving judgement/not giving it a score until I've had a chance to play it again.

BONUS GAME #2

Owned: Yes

Initial thoughts: To be honest I didn't really have many. I have enjoyed other TMG games in the past and this looked to be along the same lines (wrt complexity and components) as those. I didn't back the KS but I was able to get one of the surplus copies, cheaper than the KS price too so I decided to go ahead and give it a try.

Played: 21 Mar

Impressions: Only played it once so far and it was ok. I think I'd have to play it again before really deciding whether or not I liked it. I did like the variable character powers and ever shifting market though.

Final Verdict: Need to play more before deciding what to do w/ it.

Impressions: Not as good as the base game, which I'm not sure it is even fair to compare them. It was an interesting twist but whether or not it was one that was needed is another story.

Final Verdict: Probably keeping for now, may end up house ruling some things to make it more enjoyable.

BONUS GAME #4

Owned: Yes (Kickstarter)
Players: 5

Initial thoughts: Promised "epic" 4X game play in a tiny box and format, and for a decent price, so I thought I'd back it. Overall seems to be kind of a standard role selection game and they are mainly trying to capitalize on the small format to make it unique.

Played: 28 Mar

Impressions: Not sure I would call it "epic" but I did enjoy it. I also have to say I liked it more than the TE Defenders, we'll see how TE Galaxies compares when that finally comes out. The biggest issue that I recall having with it is that by the time you get things up and running in your kingdom, the game is over. This seems to be a common problem w/ these types of games though.

Final Verdict: Keeper

BONUS GAME #5

Owned: Yes

Players: 2

Initial thoughts: None really. It was recommended by someone in one of my play groups and I was able to find it on sale so I picked it up not knowing much about it at all.

Played: 3 July

Impressions: As the person who explained the game to me said, this is essentially just a fancy version of the old 'war' card game. Since he also spent a lot of time playing the app version of the game, he completely obliterated me in the all the games we played. I was supposedly playing one of the easier/straight forward factions to play but I guess the overall concept of when to play which character and support cards just didn't quite click. Even when we tried switching decks (which his starting deck had a lot more heavy hitters) I still lost. So there's a lot of room for improvement here. Unfortunately I'm not sure how often it'll get to the table since it is rare enough to get a game session together and when we do we usually like to have more people. Anyway, my interest is piqued enough to hang on to it and hopefully try it again at some point.

Final Verdict: Keeping it for now, see if I can eventually make it work... might try the app version.

BONUS GAME #6

Owned: Yes (Kickstarter w/ all the exclusive expansions)

Players: 2

Initial thoughts: I have gone back and forth on this game. When the KS was running I excited about it, at that time IIRC it was the most I had ever spent on a KS game. After that was over and reading more about it I became less interested between the delay and thinking more about the concept of the discontinuity of all the story cards (and the relation of the monsters w/ the story cards). It's been siting unopened since I received it, which is usual for me.

Played: 3 July

Impressions: We decided to give this a try as part of a 2 player game day a friend and I were able to get together. I have to say I'm more impressed w/ the game than I thought I would be. The discontinuity mentioned in the 'initial thoughts' above still bugs me a little bit but I decided to just roll w/ it. It is far from a perfect game, being a little long is probably the biggest complaint, that will probably decrease w/ more familiarity. However it was very enjoyable the first time we played it and for the most part everything made sense. The dice didn't always agree w/ me so playing as the Dungeon Lord I wasn't as setup for the final battle as I may have liked to be, but I did have all 4 monsters at level 2. I did end of losing at the end (Archivist v. Pit Fighter)

Final Verdict: Keeping it, hoping to get it back to the table at some point... after all there is a TON of stuff in the KS version to get through.

BONUS GAME #7

Owned: Yes (all 5 sets)

Players: 2+ (mainly 2 player though)

Initial thoughts: Mainly picked up the sets since they were cheap (B&N selling them at 50%+ off) and because they included cards that could be used w/ the AD&D Adventure Game system. The pre-painted minis are great (some a little more bent out of shape than others but that's minor). The cards however are a disaster. Every one of the card sets had some sort of problem, mainly the fact they were bent out of shape. I tried putting them under something heavy to see if that would help straighten them out. It worked to some extent, but still not great.

Played: 4 July

Impressions: Had a couple of hours to to blow waiting on other events for the day so I decided to give it a try as a solo game playing Undead v Orcs. The undead rushed ahead to grab a couple of treasures chests, but that left them exposed to the Orc hoard who took a quick lead. Freeing up the leadership points (and a couple of lucky card draws) allowed the undead to get some heavy hitters out and the game balanced out again. Eventually it came down to the bone dragon facing off against the Ogre w/ a variety of support creatures around. The undead were at 2 and the orcs at 6 (or something like that). The final few turns involved the Orc captain and beserker rushing rushing ahead to attack a newly spawned hypnotic spirit which would have won the game for the orcs. The spirit was able to survive the attack though. On the undead turn the spirit moved away, the beserker was killed and the Ogre and dragon beat up on each other a bit more. Debated whether or not to spawn another creature, being so close to the end, but went ahead and decided to go ahead and to it. On the orcs turn the Ogre and another creature took the dragon down to 20 health, the captain was going to rush in and finish the job... however it was 'pinned' because of the newly spawned skeleton and couldn't reach the dragon. Nothing the orcs could do to finish off the dragon so the dragon killed the Ogre and the undead won.

It is always hard to get a good impression of a game after only a single play through, especially a solo play of a multiplayer game. I have to say though I found this to be a lot of fun. As I've mentioned before I enjoy the concept of mini/war games but find most of them to be too fiddly to deal w/. This takes most of what I like about them and distills it into a very compact and easy to understand game. I also like the fact it is very deterministic in the sense that no dice are involved. Minus card effects when you go into combat you know how much damage you are going to be doing and how much the enemy is going to be taking so you can plan around that. Each of the different sets seems to have a unique feel/play style so there's lots of options there. Finally, given the number of match ups w/ all the sets there should be plenty of replayability. The one thing I did get wrong, since I can never play a game right the first time , is I constantly forgot about the special ability inherent to the leader.

Final Verdict: Keeper, can't wait to try it again against an actual opponent.

BONUS GAME #8

Owned: Yes (KS version w/ all the bling)

Players: 2-4

Initial thoughts: To be honest it has been so long since I originally KS/ordered this I don't really recall what initially attracted me to it. IIRC it got some good initial previews and it looked the the type of game both of my groups may enjoy so that's probably the reason. Plus I will admit I am more attracted to games w/ lots of free bling... but I'm getting better about it... I promise

Played: 15 Aug

Impressions: I should mention up front that we only played this as a two player game so I think we missed a good portion of where the game really shines wrt the auction and the negotiation that can happen during that phase. There were only two times both of us selected the same gem and even those times we both wanted different characters so there was really no conflict at all in that stage. I hope to bring it out the next time we all get together to see how it does w/ 4 players. However I do have a concern about that in the sense point salad doesn't even begin to describe this game. There are so many ways to earn points coming up w/ a specific strategy can be daunting, especially the first couple of plays. Not a game I would recommend for players that have a tendency towards AP. Maybe once everyone is a little familiar w/ the various scoring mechanisms it'll help/let people focus a bit more on what they should do from the onset instead of trying to do a little bit of everything. In the end though it was a fun game that I'm sure will hit the table again.

Final Verdict: Keeper.

BONUS GAME #9

Owned: Yes (KS version)

Players: 2-4

Initial thoughts: I missed out (well actually backed out) of the Star Realms KS in part because I didn't really fully get what they were trying to do. The way the different factions interacted w/ each other didn't make sense and I felt I was getting into too many KSs so I dropped it. It is one of the KS decisions I regret. So when the new game from them came up I thought I'd give it a try to see if they can do it again, and this time I would stay in no matter what.

Played: 19 Sep

Impressions: We were able to get in 3 games in about an hour, so length wise it is certainly in the same vein as Star Realms, that's about the only comparison though. We tried two random decks first, well actually played through 1/2 of the main deck for the first game and then the other half the second game. Then we tried a straight blue v green deck. The first game was over in about 4 turns, IIRC I only drew 8 cards including the original 5. You do really hit the ground running in this game and we were doing 10+ points of damage by the second turn. The second game lasted a little longer and we got some good/interesting combos together. What killed it for me though is after I played a card that removed all the champions (don't remember any of the card name) and recycled my cards to draw a new card, my opponent played a card that brought all champions back from the discard pile. So he was able to get 3 or 4 powerful champions back on the board when I had none. The game was over a couple of turns later. WRT the blue v green, one of his first characters was a flyer and there was nothing in the green deck (at least that I ever got into my hand) that would allow me to deal w/ it. Ultimately while it can occasionally be fun to get some powerful combos out early in a game, the game seems to suffer from too much randomness. Yes some card games take awhile to build up and get an engine going, this game bypasses that entirely almost to its detriment.

Final Verdict: Keeper... for now.

BONUS GAME #10

Owned: Yes (KS version)

Players: 2

Initial thoughts: It has been so long I don't really recall what initially attracted me to this game. Perhaps it was just the art work since if nothing else it is a really nice looking game. Maybe it was the fact it was a pretty cheap card game and this was during the "heyday" of my backing projects, swept up in backing a lot of things since KS was "new".

Played: 19 Sep

Impressions: The rules were more or less clear, there were a couple of questions/situations that came up that we either played wrong/misinterpreted or didn't find so we played out what seemed reasonable. I probably should have rewatched one of the tutorial videos before playing, but we hadn't planned on playing this originally so I didn't. With that said I enjoyed the game, but my opponent didn't as much. The funny thing is it wasn't the rules that we messed up that he didn't like as much as the randomness of the ranged combat. In part that might have been because I think he only won 1/3 or so of the ranged attacks so he was having some really bad card karma. We did mess up the melee combat a bit, mainly in the sense of only playing one round per battlefield as opposed to playing it out until all cards/dragons were expended. In the long run I don't think that made much of a difference though since we generally played as many cards in combo for the attack trying an all or nothing strategy. Where it felt kind of flat for me was the end game. Going into the last round of battlefields I had 3 gems, my opponent had 2, so it was pretty certain I was going to win. Again maybe the way we were misplaying combat might have made a difference but I don't think so as some of the battlefields were misbalanced wrt the number of dragons. So the end game was little more of a formality than anything else.

Final Verdict: Play it more before deciding.
