Short reactions to the games I played at BGG.con 2014. You can hear more about them on my podcast episodes recorded at the event. Games are listed in order of preference, not the order in which I played them.

One of the titles from my Essen anticipation episode, this one was a hit with me. A simple & attractive economic game themed around Japanese fishing. The flip of cards reveal supply (fish in the sea) and demand (buyers back at the harbor), while the former also constitute a simple "map" that you sail out onto. Money (=VPs) can be spent to upgrade your capabilities, but the game is short, so you shouldn't upgrade everywhere--they can't all return on that investment.

The second from my Essen anticipation episode, this Schacht superfiller is the kind of game I still love...but I understand some people may be tired of. It's set in medieval Europe, and you're just building trade connections between neighboring towns to eke out a little more profit than your other players. But it does it so well! Remember when we used to talk about elegance in games? This is what we were talking about.

I'm also a big fan of the designer's Hansa, and this game bears some similarity to it. But where Hansa is pickup & delivery boiled down to its core, Hellweg adds just a couple more bells & whistles. We skipped the Family game and went straight to the Expert, which was easy enough.

I hadn't planned to play this one, but we did, and it was a good reminder--to someone who shouldn't need it--that often the old games are the best games. That's because you can home in on just those titles that "made the cut" from years past. I don't remember the other thirty games people thought had potential at Essen 2006...but it doesn't matter anymore. We know this one was good from way back then, and it was nice to play again.

This is a weird one, both as a game, and my reaction to it. The game may be Eklund's smoothest, with the most familiar mechanisms. But that's only judged against his collection of oddities. It's still kind of strange, and takes some getting used to. If it wasn't for the incredible theme, I wouldn't put up with it. But I really do love this quirky, historical, quasi-wargame theme.

As for my reaction, I've got it up here near the top of my list for BGG.con, yet I'm also happy that I sold my copy. I got a good price, and someone who desperately wanted it now owns one. Thinking about it, I don't think it would get played much (or at all) with my group again--we tried it once, and that was probably enough. Besides, I can make a point to get in a game next & every year at BGG.con, if I want to.

Brian said he looked over at me during the rules of this one, thinking, "There's NO WAY Mark likes this game." And to be honest, I was hanging on by fingernails at that point. Not that I can't understand or remember complex rules (I'm also a wargamer, remember?). But I don't like that kind of game, and normally find them inelegant. We're not building a simulation or computer model here, so smooth out some of those hard corners and make a more elegant game!

And yet...once we started playing it began to click. Then we totaled up the final scores. I was in last with another player, while two more were close near the top. Talking about it later, I really started to see some of what the game is doing (I think), and it made me want to try again. I thought about Container, which I have a love/hate relationship with, and Brass: Lancashire, which I adore. If there was a play-by-web implementation of Panamax available, I would be all over it, digging in to what might be a very meaty, rewarding strategy game. As it is, I think I know some local friends who own it (or have ordered it), so I'm looking forward to another play.

This one is on the bubble. I first played Port Royal more than a month ago, when my buddy Marcin got an early copy from Game Surplus. (I always assume Marcin hears about these things early from The Dice Tower and jumps on them. It's how we also got AbluXXen and Sushi Go before anyone else.) A push-your-luck card game, pirate-themed, and with a Bohnanza-inspired used of card backs that makes me smile. I loved it immediately, and wanted to show Davebo at BGG.con because I knew he'd love it, too.

However, now that I've played several times, I've noticed that half of the games overstay their welcome. I don't know if we're pushing our luck too hard, not creeping up on the 12 points with smaller crew cards, or what. I still enjoy it, and may still buy it (it would be a good lunch game). But I need to figure out why it sometimes drags, and what to do about it.

Once I get over the shame of tanking our game with a critical rules error, I can think more clearly about this one. It helps that I've played once before, with the correct rules. It's true that this isn't my sort of game, a "kitchen sink" of systems borrowed from Agricola, Le Havre, Glory to Rome, Yspahan, and others. I like some of those influences, but not all. To be sure, there are some original ideas in La Granja, too.

It plays longer than I like, but doesn't feel terribly long. It's not brain burning, the theme & production are attractive. The gameplay is almost pleasant. Add it all up, and it's a game I'd be happy to play again, but would also be happy playing something else.

Considering this was my #1 anticipated game from Essen, the fact that it's down this far on my list looks like there's a problem. That's not true. It's a fine game, and we all had fun playing it. It's a matter of expectations. I thought "Pandemic the Dice Game" would be a whole lot shorter & lighter than the original. Maybe something like "Pandemic Express" (which was done independently as Infection Express--I should check that out).

I missed the board, and it wasn't that much quicker (if at all) than the original game. I never burned out on Pandemic, so I should just go play that again.

I hadn't planned to play this one, and didn't know much about it, but filled the 4th spot at a table with friends. It was perfectly fine, a territory game with only very German-style INdirect conflict, some interesting card play, and a game end condition that keeps it from going too long. We've had plenty of economic engine games--this is sort of "geographic engine" game. Anxious to try again.

P.S. Apparently we missed a rule in this one, too (that opposing player pieces may occupy the same space), but this time it wasn't my fault. See? All these new games, rules constantly in danger of getting missed.

Another from designer Hayashi, this was simple & fun enough, but not so much that I'd need my own copy. Maybe. Or maybe when there are different "maps" to play on. One player rolls dice--everyone records that number on their stylized grid map of Japan...but with adjacency rules that limit your options. If there's no legal placement, you mark an X. At the end of the game, the most X's loses. That's it. If it wasn't for the clever grid map of Japan, there'd be almost nothing here. However, with that element it's a decently clever "gamer bingo."

This was actually very pleasant. A pastime to play with another player (I wouldn't play with 3-4), which could be done friendly or sharky. This is almost an app game, just done in a boardgame format. The board is simple but does the job, and it's nice that it's double-sided for two different styles of play. The pieces are wonderful, more of that faux-bakelite we enjoy in our games. Not chunky like the pieces in Hive, but still substantial and with plastic racks for holding them and a full-sized draw bag. (Lately some other games have come with draw bags that are too small for how much goes in them.)

I have to be honest--this was a disappointment. My only hope is that the rule I missed will elevate this game to something like we used to get from Knizia. I'm not sure that it will, but perhaps. It looks great, but even that had a downside because the attractive board hid the tiles placed on it (they need more visual contrast), and the glorious plastic shells roll around when played on those tiles.

I've owned my copy for years & years, played a few times long ago. It was good to get a chance to play again with players who know the system. It's a weird mix of cinematic and realistic(?) gunfighting, all done with the extreme slowdown of wargame tactical rules. That is, less than a minute of the fighting being "simulated" takes two hours to game out on the table.

Happy to check this one off my list, and now I think I can part with my copy of the game. I'd still like to see someone take this idea and make a nimble game of it. Something like Knizia did with Clash of the Gladiators. That might be anathema to the wargamers, but I'd be interested.

I've heard about this for years, and thought I'd only get to play if I went to the Gathering of Friends again. Since that's uncertain, I was very happy to see the game in the "Dexterity Lobby" of BGG.con. It was fun to play around with for a while, and I'm sure it rewards practice & skill, but I definitely don't need to own it. I'll stick with Crokinole.

I'd played the solo/puzzle version of this on the iPad prior to BGG.con, but wanted to play against real people, too. It was ok, and even that is giving it a bump up to compensate for the scoring rule I got somewhat wrong (we were crossing out opponents' hotel & shop scoring, not just the shop bonuses). I know that skewed the scores quite a bit, but even if we'd gotten that right I don't think anyone would've loved the game. W├╝rfel Bingo is still the best of this type of game.
