For the 3rd year in a row I was lucky enough to make it to BGG Con in Dallas, Texas. My first 2 trips were fun, but this trip was an absolute blast. In this geek list I will give you my thoughts on the games I played as well as share some pictures I took. I just want to take a moment and thank the entire BGG staff and all of the volunteers for putting on such a well organized, well run event. There were 2650 people there and all of them seemed to be having a very good time.

Please feel free to add your comments and thoughts about the games I played and what you thought of them.

For the past 2 years I had arrived at the Con on Wednesday afternoons but my friends had convinced me to come in on Tuesday so that we would have more time to hang out and game. I arrived to find Chris, Norm, and Mike waiting for me in the lounge. All 3 of them had arrived on Monday night.

Derek and Lorae showed up about 30 minutes later and we started our first game of the Con. It was a micro game that I had never played before called The Great Heartland Hauling Company. It was a fun little game that I picked up very quickly and did pretty well in.

After everyone got checked in, it was time to head to our favorite BBQ place close to the airport. Hard 8 BBQ is so good and they sell their meat by the pound. As you can see, everyone is smiling since it is time to go eat

They let you pick out your meat right off these giant grills.

Now we are totally stuffed. Time to get back to the hotel and get some gaming going.

Mike G. had brought this from Colorado to sell in the Virtual Flea Market and he said he would love to play it one more time before he has to get rid of it. I thought this was an interesting game but all of us felt like it was missing something and that the auction mechanic for the tiles took too long. I thought the whole game played a little long for what it was.

I did not so well in this game as Derek got a pretty easy win:

Zach had brought a copy of La Granja with him and we set it up and gave it a go. This was a very clever game and I liked how you could use your cards for several different things. I felt lucky to be able to play this on Tuesday night as I knew it would be a popular game in the Hot Games Room on Wednesday.

I thought I was doing pretty well producing and turning in goods but when we tallied up the final scores I came up a little short. I will have to play this one again to see if it a must buy for me but I think it has a lot of potential.

Wow was this game a pleasant surprise. Thanks to the Master Builder mechanic where you get to set the order and price of castle tiles that are for sale each round this game was a huge improvement over Suburbia. I think the little boy in me liked building my own castle much better than building my own city

Got up on Wednesday morning and met several friends for breakfast at the hotel. We got in line for registration around 10;45 and even though we started outside of the building, thanks to the great work by the BGG staff we all had our badges and free games in less than 45 minutes. Several of us were excited to try out Alchemists and one of my friends was able to get a copy from the library. Mike G. had read the rules ahead of time and all of us had watched videos of the game play. The copy we had was brand new so we had to punch and sort everything.

This game certainly looks beautiful and the phone app used to figure out the make up of your spells worked very nice. All 4 of us enjoyed the game and I would certainly play it again but I don't think it was a must buy for any of us. Chris was the best Alchemist and beat us pretty easily with Sharon finishing 2nd and Mike G. and me tied fr last.

After some other members of our group came back from the Vendor Hall carrying several boxes of Terra Mystica: Fire and Ice expansion and several copies of Castles of Mad King Ludwig we decided to go have some lunch at Lizzano's. This is another place that we found last year and it is only about 5 minutes from the airport. It is a small Mom and Pop pizza place run by a family from Albania and their pizza is fantastic. They also deliver to the Con in the evenings.

Mike G. had reserved one of the private board rooms for Wednesday evening and he had wanted to play a large game of Antiquity. Several people said they were going to play but once he got it from the library and got it set up, several people bailed on him to play other games that were new and high on their lists to try. A few people played Deus, while another group started playing Alchemists. Mike G. had read the rules and had Antiquity all set up. The game looked interesting to me so I told him I would play and he began explaining the game. All I can say is that I am so glad that I gave this game a chance. It is a splotter game and there is a lot of stuff going on. Not only must you build your city, farms, inns, but you must also contend with famine and pollution every turn.

This game took us about 3 hours and I finally got my Cathedral played and picked the win condition where you have to have at least one of all of your buildings in play. Mike G. had his in play also and picked the win condition where you have to have all of your cubes in play. We battled back and forth but I was finally able to get all of my buildings in play and won the game.

Even though this game is an older classic and not one of the hot new games, we had a blast playing it and I have to say I am looking forward to playing this classic again. Thanks Mike G. for being such a great teacher.

None of us thought it was great but if you want a change from your typical 7 Wonders game this may work for you. Sharon won with the rest of us within about 5-7 points of her.

I can't believe it is Thursday afternoon already but I guess that is what happens when you stay up till 4am, sleep till 10am then go have breakfast and don't hit the Hot Games Room until noon. My buddy Norm texted me and said h was saving me a spot at the Kanban table in the Hot Games Room and that we had a guy who would teach us the game. The first thing I noticed about this game was that the board is very busy and colorful. Bruce had played the game twice already and was willing to teach Norm, Carl, and myself how to play. Bruce also played and you could certainly tell he knew what he was doing. He did a great job of teaching us the game but a few parts did not click with me. Norm and Carl really enjoyed it. I know there is a great game underneath the hood of this game but I could not find it. My thoughts on it might go up with a second play but it is certainly not on my must buy list.

Bruce won with Norm and Carl running a close second and third. I was lapped and finished in lastshake

After dinner Thursday afternoon, several of us met in the Dessler Room and we set up a game of Terra Mystica with the Fire and Ice expansion as well as Historia at the other end of the table. Terra Mystica is a favorite with our group so we were all excited to give it a try with the expansion. Derek, Lorae, Norm and I got to play TM first while the other guys played Historia.

Since there were 6 new races on 3 different boards, we put all of them up for auction and we drew one randomly from the base set which just happened to be the Halflings. The auction bidding Victory Points for the choice of races is a very interesting mechanic and also very fair. All 4 of us wanted to play one of the cool new races and try out their new powers on the new map. Unfortunately I did not do very well in the bidding and got STUCK playing the Halflings Derek did point out to everyone that the Halflings are one of my favorite races and that I was starting the game with a 16 point lead in VP. Lorae won the bidding and chose the Ice Maidens (Very Appropriate Race for Hershake), Norm won the 2nd bid and took the Shapeshifters, with Derek trying out the Acolytes. Guess poor me would just be digging the whole game. Derek had an early chance to block me in on one side of the map but wanted to upgrade to his Stronghold instead which turned out to be a mistake as I quickly expanded.

The halflings held their own and kept the new races in their place.

Final Score
Me 168
Derek 119
Lorae 90

I think this expansion is a great addition to an already great game. I just wish they would have put another map besides the original on the backside of the new map.

So I set my alarm for 7am OUCH and met down in the lobby at 8 with a group of people to go play Disc Golf at the Bear Creek Park about 15 minutes from the airport. Thanks to Leo for giving me a ride and being my partner and thanks to Craig and Mike for letting me use your discs. We had 18 people and split up into 2 groups and played doubles. It was a total blast and everyone was super cool. I was by far the worst disc golfer but I still had a great time and look forward to doing it again next year.

Wow look where my shot ended up? What do you mean that's not mine?

Scott was able to get a copy of Hyperborea from the library. This looked like a fun area control type game. Zach read the rules and we picked our races. I took the red warmongers because they looked like they should be pretty easy to play. All I have to do is kill the other soldiers on the board, right??? Zach took the yellow guys, Scott the green, and Jeff the blue. I really liked the cube in the bag mechanic for choosing your actions. The game actually played pretty fast and even though Zach was the first to get 12 jewels and get the bonus card to end the game, I had killed enough Ghosts and other player's figures as well as controlled the most tiles to pull out the win.

Grog Island was one of the biggest surprises of the Con for me and is on my Must Buy List. If you have ever had any interest in playing poker, it doesn't get any better than this even if you don't know how to play. Everyone is real nice and has fun with it. I did get to play 2 more games of Zhanguo later in the day and I absolutely loved it. Went to the top of my Must Buy List. The funny thing is that I finished in 4th place in both of our full games of Zhanguo and still loved it.

On Saturday afternoon, Mike G., Chris, myself and 7 others went to play Locked in a Room: Puzzle Hunt. I had no idea what this was going to be like. It turned out to be an absolute blast. Another great activity put on at the BGG Con and I want to thank the man and woman who put it together and ran it. Basically the 10 of you are locked in a room and have 1 hour to solve a puzzle and find the key to escape out of the room.

There are combination and keyed locks on everything. In our room we had to uncover the master plan of Master Villain The Befuddler who was planning to trap and kill 10 people. Hmmmmmmmmmm This was so much fun as we looked all over the room for clues and tried to put them together to figure out the master plan. I encourage everyone to give this a try next year. Unfortunately time ran out on our group and we were unable to get the final combination to unlock the last box which had our escape key in it.

After Splendor, Norm, Scott, and I played Pandemic Contagion twice in a row. This game is easy to learn and play. It is kind of fun trying to infect all the cities which is the complete opposite of regular Pandemic. Fun filler game but nowhere near as good as Pandemic. Scott won the first game an I won the 2nd game.

Every time I saw Colt Express being played, I thought it looked like a fun little game. Late Saturday night there were a few guys playing it out in the lobby just outside of the main gaming hall. They were getting ready to start a new game and invited me, Mike G., Norm, and Scott to join them.

Time for a good old fashioned cowboy shootout. This is a pretty simple game where you play your cards in player order them do all of their actions Robo Rally style. This is a very fast playing and fun game. The train is pretty cool also.

All of us liked this game so much that we played it back to back. I never won or was even close to having the most loot at the end of the game but this went to my must buy list. It is more of a party game than a strategy game in my opinion.

Before I knew it, it was Sunday morning and time to pack. My plane was leaving at 1:50pm so I had time to get a few games in and hit the Vendor Hall one last time. I met up with Mike G. who was still wearing his BGG Library Vest proudly.

]

Doesn't Mike G. look like a very happy gamer? Even though he was dead tired, him and Derek agreed to play another game of Grog Island with me. They both really liked the game and after a 2nd play it moved up to one of my top games of the Con. We went to grab some breakfast and then Derek, Lorae and I played our last game of the Con. We decided to play Castles of Mad King Ludwig which would make it my 3rd play of this game at the Con. Derek schooled us but it was a blast.

This shirt pretty much explains what I did for the past 6 days. While I got to play a ton of fun and new games my top 3 for BGG 2014 are:

1) Castles of Mad King Ludwig
2) Zhanguo
3) Grog Island

If you love playing games, meeting other gamers, and hanging out with a fantastic group of people for a week then I encourage you to come to BGG Con 2015. This was my 3rd BGG Con and I did not think it could live up to the first 2 years but it did and even surpassed them.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and Happy Holidays to all. Cant wait till next year.
