I got a nice collection of games from Santa today. First Cartography, a cool little Carcassonne like game. Next, a sci-fi game (I'm a huge sci-fi fan), Space Attack!. Lastly, a game I was thinking about myself, Bedtime Heroes! I will be trying this first with the kids.

Thank you very much Santa, these are great.

Merry Christmas.

I just got the *perfect* mini-PnP Secret Santa Gift! This is exactly the kind of thing I envisaged when I set up this exchange last year.

Looks like an ordinary greeting card, right?

Wrong!

Inside I found this. Citizen Cane a small but perfectly formed worker placement / dice rolling game that comes across as a lite seasonally themed crossover of The Manhattan Project and Alien Frontiers.

I just need to grab some tokens and my suddenly oh-so-ho-ho-ho Christmassy Warhammer dice (I potentially need 28 of them!)

Thank you to my mini-PnP Secret Santa!
p.s. Now I have to work out who you are!

really was my Mini PnP Secret Santa and Citizen Cane really was just the prelude.

Just before Christmas a package marked PnP SS was delivered and in an act of unusual self control, placed under the tree!

I opened it gleefully on Christmas Day. Inside was a double whammy of awesome:
Shadows Upon Lassadar: Sorrow of Salilth and The Duke.
Please see their own entries for pictures and more details/comments/praise. As the data-base only links individual geek list posts, I'm going to post each item separately!

edited to correct the card image (again - I liked it better when it was wrong!) and to add the extra items.

My mini santa was on the ball this year, literally! I received the package early (with instructions to open it early, too), and came home from work the Friday after Thanksgiving to find:

A copy of Freakball Team Manager. I had missed this one in the 2013 "In-A-Tin" / "Express" Print-and-Play Design Contest - Final Submission List. Given my love of Bloodbowl and team development type games, I am looking forward to getting this to the table, soon.

I also received a copy of Micro Space Empire, something that's been in my mental to-do list for a while.

Thank you, mini santa!

My apologies to my Mini PNP Secret Santa. My package did arrive and has been snug as a bug, under the tree next to its big brother PNP package, and anxiously waiting to be torn into.

Perhaps MiniSS is granting me permission to finally find out what's in the box?! I hope so-- the anticipation is pushing me over the edge, especially with doing the Advent challenge and having to "force" myself to play one or more games each day of this month. Thanks, Mini Secret Santa!

Update: So I wanted to make certain that I had time to make a proper post regarding my received miniSS gift. Since the family is starting to roll in I pulled the box out from under the tree and FINALLY tore into it and look what I found...

and inside of that...

This build seems so much more than "Mini"! The printing is great and the board is well constructed. The cards have a nice weight to them and the grey and red dice seem to fit the color palette Kwanchai used for the game. I love it and can't wait to beat up on my boys- in the game, of course.

This is also my first PnP in a cigar box. What an awesome storage solution! I love the weight, durability and size of the box. Great choice.

So yes, MiniSecret Santa-- I did get your gift, I do love the game and appreciate the effort you put into it. It's a perfect game for me and my boys who like to play head-to-head and skirmish games against one another. Great job! Have a very Merry Christmas and enjoy the holidays!

Along with Beneficiary, the "biggest" in terms of how many sheets of paper/bits are involved (and which looks like a lot of fun), he sent:

Elevenses for One;
This Town Ain't Big Enough for the 2-4 of Us;
Mutiny, which will get some play this weekend when my parents visit;
Devil Bunny Needs a Ham, a claustrophobic classic Cheapass game now available on their website;
Coin Age;
Take-Back-Toe;
Bonsai Samurai; and
Utopia Engine, with the boards helpfully laminated. I predict I'll be spending a good bit of time with this one.

Thanks Santa!

I normally wait until Christmas to unwrap my presents, but since this one wasn't wrapped, I got it a bit early.

I received a wonderful copy of Villehardouin for my PNP Mini Santa gift.

The game is designed to fit in a CD case.

A very compact wargame that used loose change for activation.

All the components ready to go!

The build on this is very nice with mounted counters and very thick cardstock for the map and player aids. It looks terrific! Thank you very much to my Santa!

2014 Mini PnP Secret Santa

Decide to participate in the mini PNP Secret Santa too! This is to practice my PNP skills and also get to know what are the hot games that others would like to be crafted.

redtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrain

I just got a reply from the super quick Secret Santa! Looks like he is someone who loves to communicate like me!

Subject: The sleigh has been loaded!

Mini PnP Santa wrote:
Many a cheer, and I'm delighted to let you know that your games are on their way!

Do let me know when they arrive, or when you guess my identity laugh

redtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrain

And here's my reply... Hopefully Santa gives some clues soon.

Subject: Re:The sleigh has been loaded!

Hi Santa,

Can you give me some clues as to your identity? I would really love to know who you are!

Thank you for loading the sleigh and sending them over so quickly!

With warmest regards,
Eugene

redtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrain

Santa gave me 3 clues! In fact 4 potentially...

Subject: Re:The sleigh has been loaded!

Mini PnP Santa wrote:
Clues? We have plenty of clues! Here's three:

1) We've posted replies to one another in BGG.
2) We've even geekmailed each other!
3) We both follow Todd's developer thread

More clues?

It will all become obvious when the package arrives, though.
Part of the fun is trying to figure out who the Santa is.
If you can figure it out before the games arrive - well done!

I tried to get the list of the 25 participants to get a sense of who might fit the bill! So I posted on The 2014 Mini PnP Secret Santa...

Is there a way to find out who are the 25 participants?

redtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrain

And I was found out...

More news from the front!

Subject: Re:The sleigh has been loaded!

Mini PnP Santa wrote:
Sorry! Jake is a great guy, but he is not I!

Here's another clue, that you might have already deduced:

4) My timezone is more than 5 hours away from your own!

It is more difficult to think of clues that will not tip my hand.

5) Our usernames share 4 letters (but not all the letters appear only once).
6) The flags of our countries share a color.

Would you care to ask questions? I may or may not answer some or all of them, which may give you yet another clue

Good luck, and thank you for taking part in this fun!

redtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrain

My reply... Somehow I think I am close but want to make sure...

Subject: Re:The sleigh has been loaded!

Looks like I should not be making guesses until I am more certain. I do have questions.

1. Are you a recipient of any gifts made by me?
2. Are you before or after my timezone (GMT + 8)?
3. Have you participated in the Jack Vasel Memorial Auction?

Cannot wait to find out your identity!

redtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrain

There are now answers to the questions but I am getting nowhere closer to the answer...

Subject: Re:The sleigh has been loaded!

Mini PnP Santa wrote:
Those are excellent questions! I shall have to resort to verbal trickery to answer them:

1. Nope; I haven't received any gifts from you.
2. Yes! But technically, all timezones are both before and after each other.
3. Nope!

Now it is up to you to figure out how I've tried to mislead devil

redtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrain

redtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrainredtraingreentrain

Finally received my print and play games from Israel! Yes!

Here's a close look at it.

Shalom made me 2 games! How is this even a mini PNP. Now I feel so bad... The first game that he gave was Yardmaster Express together with the Yardmaster Express: Caboose Expansion.

The amazing thing was that I have not listed this at all. I just got Yardmaster with Yardmaster: Bonus Card Pack #1 and Yardmaster: Caboose Expansion. We played it last Tuesday and I was thinking, it was a shame we didn't have the express version. Was wondering how it will be like, then the next day, I receive Yardmaster Express! Wow! What a mind reader.

The other game seemed to be an unpublished prototype from Todd, you can read more about it here. Think looks like a space game. Will be very excited to try this as well!

Thank you so much once again, Shalom! Please let me know when you come over to Singapore! Merry Christmas to you and your family! Thank you again!

A large envelope popped out when I opened the mailbox yesterday. Upon closer inspection I realized it was from my Mini Secret Santa.

Inside was a translucent sleeve containing very nice looking components. Is that a Tie-fighter I see?

It turned out it is Star Wars: Corellian Smuggler. A solitaire game in the Star Wars universe, where the player takes on the role of a smuggler and has to earn his living in a series of different scenarios.

I have never heard of this game before! It looks fantastic!

and he did a great job with these games.

First up is Utopia Engine, laminated for maximum replayability. I definitely need to play this more and takes up so little space. Great stuff.

Next is Citizen Cane, a really fun dice drafting game, perfect for the Christmas season. I'm a huge fan of this game, so great pick.

Jasper and Zot always surprises me because of its lovely art. The fact that anyone would create any of these games FOR FREE blows my mind.

Finally, this beautiful cigar box contained Inspector Moss: House Arrest, with tokens on heavy poker chips. After playing this a few times, I am super impressed with it so far and I'm excited for future plays. There was one mystery inside thought and I'm hoping some of you can help.

Here's the mystery document:

Are these special starting powers? I couldn't find anything about this on the game entry. Any info would be great!

All in all, it is a merry merry Christmas in the Cramer household. I'll leave you with some kind words from Buss:

Merry Christmas!

My Mini PnP SS gift arrived well in time for Christmas but I kept it sealed until Christmas morning. I like to have something good to open while the kids are tearing into their own toys. So when I finally unsealed the large manila envelope, this is what I found.

Dice of Arkham
A deluxe, full-color printing of Dice of Arkham.

Rock 'n Roll
A nice printing of Rock n' Roll, a game I had never heard of. This one includes four sturdy player sheets that are begging to be laminated.

Pocket Dungeon
And lastly Pocket Dungeon. This one looks right up my alley! I am particularly excited to dive into this one.

Thank you Mini Secret Santa! I can't wait to grab some dice and give these new games a whirl (or three).

Woohoo! meeple I've just received my Mini Secret Santa gift, from the States!
It took a while longer to arrive to me, due to the French administration not recognising a postcode, even when it is evident (the 1s were missing their top and bottom bars kinda mistake, kuddos for writing the 7 correctly, btw!). But it arrived home eventually.

This is one game I had my eyes on in KStarter, but found that the cost of the whole was not justified due to high shipping costs (went from single to double the price on the first game tier, or somesuch). This is why I am extremely happy about receiving it from my (ever so) astute Mini SSanta.

The build is gorgeous, all enclosed within a video tape case, cards sleeved and within their own boxes, lots of eurocubes and the rule is inserted within the inside cover. The geek in me can't wait to try this game asap. Unfortunately, I'm working on some accounting for the day, but fear not, I'll sink my teeth in the game soon enough! devil

who was also my Secret Santa this year.

This is an intriguing not-quite-abstract but still quite chess-like game, a genre I'm really fond of. There are lots of PnP expansions available from the publisher's website too, but I think the base game will keep me busy for quite a little while!

Thank you very, very much Jake!

Such a caring guy, he geekmailed me directly to make sure everything was OK. It was kinda tough not to let him know that I was also his Secret Santa! He made it really fun, too!

After many delays, the package arrived:

All was carefully wrapped and water-proofed. Smart!

As I pulled everything out of the bag, my youngest son got very excited by the tokens:

He even helped me arrange everything to have pictures taken:

The card were very well done: front and back printed on paper, and sleeved with a "throwaway" playing card sandwiched in between, I've tried doing this in the past, but I always get the sizes wrong, and everything moves around or bends or something. This is the first time I've seen it done right! The cards are a pleasure to handle and shuffle.

Oh, and the final endearing touch was a kindly-written christmas card:

Thank you!

Both my PNP Santas were from France this year, actually! Sonia really outdid herself, this would have passed as a contribution to the regular PNP Santa as well, probably. She made me a nice set of Fish Cook, and suddenly the previous questions from my Santa if I had any playing money left over made sense. Nice quality paper and good print quality on those cards. She even made me Burgoo as well!

Very nice, thanks a lot for these presents! I hope I get to play them soon.

I really like the format of the Mini PNP Santa and I'll definitely join it again this year, even in case(?) I won't participate in the regular one.

My mini PnP Santa came visiting just as the snow and cold did!

I'll post pictures later but I recieved a really well done copy of Island Trader. Seriously an awesome gift. Plays 1-2 players which is perfect for my wife and I... Hoping to give it a try later this week.

THANKS miniPnP Santa!!!

Earlier in the week I received a pretty hefty packet from Australia - which turned out, despite the 'hefty', to be my Mini PnP Secret Santa gift!

Inside the packet was a neatly-bound copy of Utopia Engine, a game I've been interested in for a while but weirdly never got around to trying - so this is spot-on, as a gift!

As a nice extra touch, Aussie Santa has placed the two game boards at the back of the manual behind clear-plastic cover pages, meaning I can play the game using a whiteboard marker and wipe my marks off at the end!

As an even nicer extra touch, my generous benefactor also clearly exceeded the ten-sheets guideline to include ten extra copies of the game boards, all printed in full colour on nice paper! I guess like this I can play with a pencil, or laminate them on magnet sheet and play on the fridge, or pass a copy to a friend, which is pretty cool!

A heartfelt thanks, Aussie Santa - it's a cool present, and I'm very much looking forward to having the free time to try it out! I cheated and looked at the assignments, so I know who you are - but since there's no identifying marks on the packet or any other giveaways I've seen, I'll leave it up to you as to whether you want to unmask yourself.

Es lebe Deutschland!

My sister in law enjoys "organizing" the house. This usually involves putting things where she thinks makes sense, then forgetting where that is. I've had these games for about a month now, but only JUST re-found them an hour ago.

Land of Enin!

I don't have many solitaire games, so I'm looking forward to playing this one. All the cards are about the same size as the little stationary box they got packed in and are laminated. My Santa included a meeple, and a bunch of cubes, and these awesome crystal cylinder ten siders.

Battle Line Star Wars style!

This is too cool. I've been wanting to play/make Battle Line for years now, but I tend to shy away from making all card games for some reason. The cards are all rounded and have super-cool art! My wife likes Star Wars stuff, so I might be able to convince her to play it a few times. I super love it and the fact that both of these games fit in those red boxes!

Santa also sent me a BnW PnP version of Harbor. It came with these really cool mini-pawns. This gave me a chance to play it a bit and get used to it before my backed copy of Harbor arrived. I love those little things! I'm totally going to have to find a game to use them in!

Thanks again German Santa! I really love them, and seeing that I just located them again (in a box that contained screwdrivers and a jar of wall spackle) it's like Christmas all over again!
