2014 was a bit of a funny year for me, gaming-wise. My main gaming partner (and fiancee) went to Japan on exchange in March, and I severely underestimated my ability to get any of my older games to the table, so I did not complete my 2014 challenge. However, I did start up a twice-monthly gaming group at my place, where many games were played, but it was too little too late.

In 2015, I will have my fiancee back by the end of February, and assuming she isn't bogged down in her studies I think I've got a good chance of convincing her to play a few games with me. I'll hopefully also have the group still going, and might even manage a few peripheral events.

Before I start, here are my own personal rules for the challenge (although clearly they adhere to, and closely borrow from, the official rules):

d10-1 The first 10 games listed here are my hardcore challenge, the games I commit to playing 10 times during the year. Item #11 is my only swap-in, that may substitute for any one item in the hardcore list.

d10-2 Any other games that I may rack up 10 plays of in the year, I will add as an extra item to the list to form a casual challenge. This may also include games from the hardcore challenge where I have completed a total of 20 plays, but if I somehow get another 10 plays I won't add it to the casual list a second time.

d10-3 Different versions of the same game, including various combinations of expansions and stand-alone games, will count as the same game. Hence my nearly-complete Dominion set will all be counted together.

d10-4 While I will count plays of digitised games, I will only count online plays, against real opponents. No AI games.

d10-5 However, I will count solo plays of the physical copies of games, should I so choose to play them. Of course it's arbitrary, I don't care

d10-6 The rules are subject to change without notice, but I'll be nice enough to strike out the old rule so you know what I've been compromising on.

Aaaand here's a link back to this list's entry in the main 10x10 GeekList, to save me looking for it all the time.

I got through 7 plays of this in 2014, which is pretty good, and have still only scratched the surface of the many expansion modules inside. There is still plenty to discover, and it's a game my fiancee also enjoys (except that she doesn't like playing 2-player, because Dirk is a dick).

The grand-daddy of deck builders, and another game with more expansions than I've really experienced - especially given that I don't yet own the latest promo card, Prince, and considering the new expansion that was recently announced. I've also started playing this a little on the official online implementation, and I hear there are many improvements coming for it in 2015.

I picked this up from the 2014 Jack Vasel Memorial Fund Auction, and despite only owning it for about 2 weeks I'm pretty sure I've already racked up more than 10 plays each of solo and co-op play. It certainly helps that the game plays in 10 minutes, and that my copy came with two expansions and two promos allowing for crazy expandability.

This is the other item I got from the JVMF Auction, and it hasn't hit the table yet so this might be the dark horse of the group. That said, I do know people who have played it, and I've already clocked up a bunch of plays in the campaign on my Android phone so hopefully I can find a few online opponents. They'll be neccesary if, as I suspect, my fiancee finds the slap-shod approach to ship building at odds with her perfectionist tendencies.

Another co-op! Yes there are a few, because I love the puzzle-solving element that they often share. Hanabi is probably one of the most puzzly, since its core mechanic revolves around managing shared information. This is also one of the games that I managed to get 10 plays of in 2014, thanks to its popularity amongst just about everyone. Hopefully that popularity continues in 2015.

In addition, shortly after Hanabi appeared on BoardGameArena, my fiancee and I started playing it together (shared activities are a great way to keep long-distance relationships fresh, and what better one than a co-op game?). I'll see how many more plays we can sneak in before she returns.

Sure, it's a filler game. But that also means it's the kind of game that gets played while waiting for other people to show up to a games day, or to wind things up as people are leaving. It's also eminently portable, so I can easily bring it to any occasion that I think might justify it.

As of writing, I've gotten this to 8 plays in 2014. It will be coming up with me to my parents' place over Christmas, but I don't know that I'll manage those last two games.

It's like the best parts of Settlers, Monopoly, and 7 Wonders. Maybe. Kind of. It's also not quite as quick as it advertises itself, and it's probably a bit too luck based, but I think that the Harbor expansion will add just enough variety to help keep it on the table for 2015.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

So this started as a PnP, got Kickstartered, and blew through most of its stretch goals like they were tissue paper. And then, unfortunately, like many Kickstartered games, the deadlines dragged. I thought I might have a nice shiny copy by now, but it looks like we won't be seeing anything until April at the earliest.

However, I have printed my set from the version they sent to backers, which is functionally identical in most ways to the final product. And it is still an amazingly fun game that plays quickly and crazily. I'm planning on having at least one, if not two, Boom Parties during the year, which should take care of the 10 plays in very quick order.

Takenoko is a beautiful game, and another one which many people like playing for its combination of cute design and ruthless strategy. However, without the excitement of newness or the likelihood of an expansion, I'm a little worried this won't make it to 10 plays, hence its position as the hardcore list's ringer.

Recursive GeekList item is recursive!

This entry marks the separator between the hardcore and casual lists. It's also where I'll be keeping a few statistics about my progress, and also list a few games that didn't make the cut to the hardcore list, but that have a decent chance of showing up in the casual list later.

Hardcore challenge play count: 94/100
Games completed: 7/10
Likelihood of finishing: 10%

One of the few games that I finished on my hardcore list last year, I thought I'd be lucky to get a couple of plays in this time around given that its popularity has faded. Not so! This is a definite contender for getting a full set of plays in before year's end, which is just peachy (and maybe I'll pull off the elusive Robot Apocalypse win!).

This game feels like a small-group version of Two Rooms, but in even shorter play time which is fantastic. I don't think I want to play it all the time (because sometimes I'd rather be reading cards than people) but it's definitely made its impact.
