'Tis the season to be jolly, in most of the world, anyway.

Somehow though, Christmas invariably brings out the same songs year after year. Some get you in the mood for a celebration, but others make you wish for earplugs in your stocking.

Which songs, ditties, carols or musical interventions, that only come out at this time of year, do you really hate? Which drive you up the wall either because of their inane words, terrible rhymes, awful music or dreadful interpretations?

On a happier note*, does your family have any Christmas traditions? Are these fun or eye-rolling (but you join in anyway)? Or is it Bah! Humbug! in your neck of the woods?

* pun was unintentional but serendipitous

Which game(s) do you bring out for a mixed group of people (ages, tastes, intelligence.....), with a decent chance that everyone will be able to join in and enjoy it?

Metropolys is one of my very favorite games, lingering near the bottom of my Top Twenty. I'm not much for abstracts with a spatial element. But somehow, I seem to grasp and enjoy this element of the game. And I love the auction in Metropolys, which reminds me so much of Ra. What's more, though I realize that the artwork of the game is the subject of much ridicule here on BGG, I absolutely love it. Just a beautiful style. Well, there is no accounting for taste.

I will say this though. Every one of my Metropolys plays to date has been 2-player. It is a brilliant two-player game. For the first time, I played it with three this past week. No. No, don't do that. This is a two-player game. With two, there is conflict and clarity. With three, there is chaos. I can't imagine playing the game with four. I would think, to my taste, it would be awful.

15x -7- Crokinole
2x -5- Finger Ball
2x -7- Metropolys
2x -10- Race for the Galaxy
1x -5- A la carte: New to us. Provisional rating after one play.
1x -7- Battle Line
1x -8- Carcassonne
1x -6- Colt Express
1x -8- Egizia
1x -5- Hanabi
1x -8- Love Letter
1x -7- Machi Koro
1x -7- Russian Railroads
1x -7- Splendor

What did I play this week...?

With Miss B...
* 12 Days of Christmas -- having not managed to get hold of the commercial "12 Days", I made up the PnP set, and it's good, quick fun, though Miss B isn't sold on it. I also played this in an adults-only group.
* Magic: the Gathering -- a few games, including a little time improving Miss B's deck, which is steadily growing more rats.
* Timeline: Discoveries -- a bit of a family favourite, more as a group activity than a competitive game.
* Dragon Slayer -- I still think this is fairly weak as a game, but it can be fun -- and it has dragons!

With adults only...
* Shadows Over Camelot: The Card Game -- played this with six players, which was definitely too many.
* GemPacked Cards -- a new prototype from Edo Baraf.

Miss B has expressed interest in doing the 10x10 challenge in 2015, so we'll be having a discussion to choose some games to shoot for and work that as a team. Should be fun.

Games, games and more games!

Last Monday was the tail end of my birthday weekend so I had a morning of gaming, then I had a week with my children off school, so quite a lot of gaming with them. Then my husband was off on the Friday and over the weekend, and we had our usual Friday night gaming session (on Saturday night!). So quite a list of games this week.

I also tried out two new games with my children - Escape the Curse of the Temple (which my son saw me play and wanted to try himself), and Factory Fun played properly (my son has been playing with the bits in "challenge mode" for over a year now so I thought it was time he learnt to play the real game - my daughter turned out to be quite good at it, with only minimal help). Plus I dug out What a Performance, which has been sitting in the cupboard unplayed for over a year. I have noticed that this holidays we seem to have been going for variety - playing lots of games one time each, rather than one game over and over again!

I've been trying to work through the tail end of my Gaming Resolutions and 10x10 challenge, so I've been playing lots of games for that - I've got through all the unplayed games (Android Netrunner), played all my collection (excluding trade games) in 2013-2014 (Connect Four). Still got a way to go to get all my games to 3 plays minimum and finish my 10x10 challenge though - will see how far I get in the remaining week or so of 2014!

Gaming with other adults:

2 x Dobble
2 x Schotten-Totten

1 x Escape: Curse of the Temple, Factory Fun, Android: Netrunner , Apples to Apples, Ascension, Alles im Eimer, Chronology, Connect Four, Crazy Race, Eminent Domain, Flash Point Fire Rescue, High Society, Lewis and Clark, Lost Cities, Pass the Pigs, Power Grid, Robinson Crusoe, RoboRally, Snowdonia, Terra Mystica, Weed!

Gaming with my children:

2 x What a Performance
2 x Where in the Wild?

1 x Dobble, Escape: Curse of the Temple, Factory Fun, Bloody Legacy, Cat Attack, Enchanted Forest, Heroica Fortaan, Mausen, Motorway, Shopping List, Take it Easy, Uno, Wild World Lotto

Very little gaming for me last week, probably one of hte lowest counts this year (same goes for December in general so far, but I am confident there will be much more coming up, as I am on holiday).
Nothing new, nothing spectacular. Although we did have good fun with Train of Thought, not for the first time.

3 x Train of Thought
1 x Machi Koro
1 x Pipifax
1 x Razzia!
1 x Sleeping Queens
