In 2013 I made the resolution that I was going to play 100% of my owned but unplayed games and all those that I acquired throughout the year, but I failed quite spectacularly barely making it to 50%, half of what I intended

But I did make it half way and I enjoyed tracking my progress therefore I have decided to make this an annual thing,

Welcome to the quest to play my unplayed games - 2015 edition

Rather than attempt to play them ALL this year I am going to aim for around 50% (which I know is achievable) but with the added caveat that this time next year I will look to purge those games that made this list and the previous one and are still unplayed.

Final total

79/191 = 41%

I am a bit dissapointed that the total is not higher but I did play more games this year than last year (68). My spending also went a bit mad this year, I shall rein it in for next year.

2014 list- My unplayed games ..... and the quest to play them (2014 edition)

This was brought to the boardgames day at my FLGS and lots of players were very excited because it is a Ryan Laukat game. Whilst I do like his art style I have played and was dissappointed with both Empires of the Void and Eight-Minute Empire. And I was really skeptical of worker placement combined with a story telling aspect, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. And I must have talked about it quite a bit as the b/f picked up a copy for me as soon as it arrived in store

Played.

Really interesting mix of worker placement and story telling. I wasn't sure these mechanics would mesh but the do really well. I would like to explore this more.
Actually I really really enjoy this one. Its so simple mechanically that it is very easy to just pick up and play. The worker mechanic whereby you they become exhausted after performing and action and you must provide them with a bed to rest in in order for them to become useful again is really quite novel and I do like it.
The 'below' part feels a little like a win more mechanic, as you tend to get a bit of everything if you explore repeatedly however if you keep finding nothing really with your explorations it can serious dent your scoring chances. The storytelling part (exploration) is well done but it doesn't take over, each paragraph is a story in and of itself.

Picked up the expansion for Alien frontiers on a whim in a math trade. Looks interesting and so I'll happily give this a go.

The domed city pieces are also quite nice

Recently picked this up in a trade as the b/f is looking for a decent zombie game and this one looks interesting. There is a lot of bile and hurt feelings across the forums for this one so perhaps it was not the wisest choice but we shall muddle through.

We have both played tabletop miniature games before and so hopefully there shall not be too much of a leap from that to this, which seems to be one of the main criticisms, along with a vague ruleset. *Shrugs* we shall see

Played.

I am actually quite disappointed.
Ambiguous rules and impossible odds make for dull and repetitive game play.
Shooting to kill a zombie on a 50-50 die result, results in even more zombies turning up, so the zombie horde escalates faster than you can physically cut them down. So do you opt to run away?
The Zombies generally move as fast if not faster than you so there is no getting away from the horde of zombies. And Melee?
Don't bother rolling your up to 2 dice against the 1die each (possible infinity) horde, just go sit in the corner... and die quietly.

Picked this up with the realm of wonders games as its set in the same world and they were offering a bundle deal.
No idea how it plays and I assumed it was an expansion for the realm of wonders game until a quick glance at the back of the box revealed it was a stand-alone card game.

*shrugs*

Lets get it played!

For the third year in a row this historical collectable card game is upon the list. It is a little historical card/war game currently on my trade list as I made the decision to move away from collectable card games, nobody has shown any interest however in playing it or trading it

Sold, Unplayed

There really was no interest in my group in getting this played, so I gave up trying and added this to an auction. And to be honest I am not actually sad to see it go, yes the cards are cool historical figures, but I don't think there was any realistic chance of actually getting this played.

I saw this one on the hotness and I was intrigued, a boardgame about sharing your feelings....I was determined to seek it out at speil and at least get a demo game.

The demo game was really interesting with some quite novel mechanics such as the way you fan your cards dependant upon which side of the board you are on.
plus the artist Marie Cardouat was available to sign the box.

Played.

This is really interesting and you really have to look at what cards the other player has available and what position they are in on the board.
We played a few games of this and it really is all about keeping yourself balanced to allow you to draw the cards you could need, rather than scrambling to complete the missions asap.
We probably talked more about the game than was strictly allowed by the rules, but overall an enjoyable and interesting diversion for a wet Sunday afternoon.

The b/f really likes sharks and so this little boardgame caught my eye on the Speil preview list.
The artwork is really nice and there are lots of sharks for you to collect to build your aquapark.

We tried to get a demo game but the gentleman trying to explain the rules spoke only very broken English (still better than my German though) so we did not really get a feel for it, but the cardstock was very good and the b/f agreed the artwork was really nice so we decided to take a risk and pick it up anyway.

The b/f also bought me the aquapark pin badge, which I happily attached to my shirt. I am really glad we did decide to risk it and pick it up there and then as when we went back past the stand later on it was sold out!

Played.

Got in a quick game of this with some friends whilst still at speil. The dice drafting mechanic is quite good and the artworks on the cards is awesome.
Penguins are particularily powerful but require you to roll low on your dice. I like that you have to have EXACT numbers to claim the available creatures in the row and sometimes it is cost effective to pay to reroll and sometimes it is not.
Being unable to pay for your opponents to reroll their dice is a very limiting factor and adds quite a lot of depth to the game.

I can see this one being played again and again

The b/f has mentioned this one several times as the theme REALLY appeals to him, however we were reluctant to pick it up as Stefan Feld games have a reputation for pasted on themes.
We went to a con hoping to get a game of it in to give it a try but instead found a copy of the game itself for a good price. Guess we give it a go ourselves and see

I was in two minds whether to pick this or Lanterns: The Harvest Festival up as both looked very good and I fancied spending a bit on money. I got distracted and didn't end up picking up either one. However the b/f picked up lanterns last week and arboretum this week.
I guess he loves me laugh

Played.

I really like this one. The scoring mechanic is very novel with you scoring for trees placed infront of you ...but only if you hold a majority of that colour in your hand at game end, thus you cannot be too greedy with those you place to score... as someone may pip you to the post with more of that set in hand at the end of the game thus denying you the ability to score that colour!

The b/f and I picked up a cheap copy of Arctic Scavengers in the works when it was having a clearance and after giving it a go found it was actually quite enjoyable, particularly the bluffing element which adds a whole new level to deckbuilding. The copy from the works came with the HQ expansion which is 4 additional elements to mix up the game play, whilst we have not yet added the new elements from HQ when the b/f heard a new expansion was coming out - namely recon- he was quite excited and so as soon as it hit the shelf we picked up a copy.

It'll be a while before it gets played as we have not even begun to add expansion elements yet as the base game is still so fresh and interesting but I thinks best to grab this expansion while we can.

Nothing new to really say about this one, Math traded for a signed copy of this one back in August 2013 but never got round to actually giving it a go.

It has been a bit difficult to organise a game as relative quiet is needed and (I imagine) the more players the better.
As a pure negotiation game I believe this will be a huge success or complete flop with the group... there will be no middle ground.

The theme on this one sounds awesome, you play the drugged up psychotic asassins send it to stop a chaos warlock from destroying the world. As you wander the random set up of the evil lair you encounter different minions and different rooms and traps, until hopefully you find the teleported and the room that activates it and zip off to confront Mr Chaos Warlock.

The b/f is quite excited about this one and even though it is GW so gameplay might not be great at least the mini's look good.

I am not sure where this came from but the b/f does like the B5 series so it is possible he acquired it.

Opening the lid of the box this looks quite dull, there are paper maps and plenty of chits and tokens. Hopefully this is less of a wargame than it appears.

Discarded.

The b/f and I are moving home and several tough decisions had to be made. Neither of us rated this particularly highly on our want to play lists and it has little to no trade value, so into a black bag it went

I was offered a trade for a copy of this game which had been on my wishlist for some time. It look like an interesting tile laying game for two players. hopefully I can get it to the table soon and see if it has been worth the wait.

Played.

Interesting little tile laying game which is more about trying to deny your opponent opportunities to claim corners than it is building forces to ensure you can claim corners.
You must be able to analyse the board and pick the opportune moments to play the limited power tokens that you have. A badly played power token can cost you the game
Very close game with my opponent only a turn behind me in the race to 7 victory points.
We only played the very basic game but there are components included to increase the options including special tiles and more power token options. I look forward to gradually adding these advanced pieces after playing the basic game a few more times

and many of its expansion pack.

I have played one game of this many many moons ago with the b/f however as it was a brand new game at the time I don't think I shuffled the movement deck very well as I continued to draw right flank movement cards when I REALLY needed to move units on my left flank.... needless to say said slaughter of my units who couldn't (wouldn't) move left a very sour taste in my mouth for this game and as such the game never actually got finished and has never made it back to the table.

Whilst this has mostly been replaced by the newer 2nd edition the b/f still has all of the units etc of the first edition. I did play the second edition with him and it is not too bad. Maybe we can schedule a game of this at some point this year, although it is difficult to find the time for an all afternoon game that accommodate only two players

This one seems very much like battlelore just in a different box.
The b/f has tried to convince me it is not yet I remain skeptical, although I do like the idea of the generals being able to give orders to troops even if you don't have that specific card which was my major gripe with the initial game of battlelore that I played.

Neither I nor the b/f are fans of the theme nor source materials for this one.

A 'dead' CCG system that the b/f picked up when boosters are really cheap.

I love the battlestar universe (and Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game is my most played game of all time) however this may just be a collection of cards rather than playable decks, it is also possible the b/f doesn't have the rules!

Another issue with these cheap CCG's is the b/f has them packed up into a box out of sight and out of mind, I shall endeavor to spend and afternoon unpacking them and assembling a couple of decks.

Discarded.

Another casualty of the great home moving purge. Little to no interest in learning to play and no trade value so off it went

I know little to nothing about this one however it is quite a dry thinky kind of game and the theme is unappealing. It is not something I would ever have picked up on my own accord, however sometimes that is the best way to discover new things, diving straight into the unexpected.

A pirate themed large GMT game that I traded for back in Feb of 2013.

Whilst this is a multiplayer game it is also quite a long one and I have struggled so far to arrange for several players to have an entire day available at the same time.

It also has quite a monster of a rulebook, a prospect I am not actually looking forward to slogging through to work out how it plays.

I do love me some pirates though arrrh

Played.

I have read some ambiguous rule books in my time, but the rule book in this takes the p**s. It is ridiculously unclear, littered with spelling mistakes and examples jump from page to page explaining concepts the rule book has yet to touch. This is certainly the WORST rulebook I have ever encountered and it was a real chore to get through. Thank goodness for the geek and somebody producing a 'living rule book' version which helps to clarify a lot of the concepts here.
Stop-start gameplay, with player turns varying greatly in length, there is very little swordplay, cannon fire and plunder and it doesn't really have much of a pirate-y feel to it. The theme is undeniably there but it just doesn't feel quite right. There is also the issue that you can sit outside port, loot the ports merchant ship then sail into the port ransom the merchant and goods you stole... and the Governor/Nation you just stole from couldn't care less!
We were scrabbling over 20-30 VP each when the general pardon card came up ... one player managed to loot a second ship in the Indian ocean, maximising his booty, and his notoriety and then sail into port for the full pardon and over 100 VP... didn't seem worth continuing at that point.
I am glad I played... but I would never want to again.

Witch's Brew has been on my wishlist for a very long time. I played a friends copy many years back when I first began gaming and something about the concept stuck with me.

I was hugely dissappointed to discover I could not just pop into a game store and pick up a copy and this was my first experience of wanting an OOP game. But with so many great (and new and exciting) games out there I decided witches brew would just be one of those things I pine about but never actually do anything about.
Fast forward to this year and suddenly there is a spiel nomination (and I believe it won) for a game called Broom service that is apparently based upon witches brew.Well that was an auto-buy then!.

Lets hope Broom service is a good interpretation of witches brew... and lets hope witches brew is as good as I recall it being!

Pick up this little box on a complete whim since it was very cheap. We know nothing about it, somebody had misplaced the English and German rules at the demo table, but the components looked good.

Played.

Really light nice dice rolling game with pretty good components considering the price I paid for this.
Yahtzee like variant whereby you are trying to roll two or three of a kind to grab treasures before returning to port.
Since its small and compact I imagine this will travel with us to a lot of games events and be played over and over.

Birthday gift from my sister. This one looks like a fun party/ story telling game and so I shall probably break it out at the next games event at Firestorm games.

Sold, Unplayed

Whilst this was a thoughtful gift from my sister it sounds like it is similar to Cards Against Humanity,a party game, which I am not so fond of and it really is not my sense of humor. Better than somebody else play and enjoy rather than this sitting unplayed upon my shelf.
