I want to keep a log of all the games I've played over the course of a year. I haven't kept up so far, but this year it's time to change.

I've been keeping this list just as a playlist, but I've noticed how many games are new to me, so I've changed the purpose to indicate how many new games I've played. I hope to get to 100 new-to-me games this year.

Also, since my overbadge says "Loses Often" and rightly so, I've also noticed a trend that I'm winning at a slightly higher percentage this year. So I'm hoping maybe I can average one per week. I'm sort of cheating in this category by counting cooperative wins, and 2 player game wins, both of which are basically 50-50.

My first time ever playing this game. After the "lesson", we started a 5 player game. Red and Green spent much of the game deadlocked near the action routes. Purple kept pushing Yellow all across the top routes. Myself as Blue got my 3rd action early, and found a nice quiet spot just north of the Action area, where there was a token. I claimed both ends of the 3 space route, and just collected 2 pts and a token every other turn or so. I ended up winning by about 15-20.

My first time ever playing this one as well. I had heard rave reviews, so I wanted to play to find out what it was about. I didn't even realize there were dice involved in this game, until it was opened.

After the lesson, we started a 4 player game. 2 players were quite experienced, and the 3rd had played once. The only victory tile I was able to claim was the agriculture (Animals) since no else went for them until the very endgame.

I wound up in 3rd place by a comfortable margin. A tiebreaker decided the winner. I liked the game, but it took a LONG time. I don't know if I'll see it played again.

Another first for me, all in the same day! We played this one 4 players, with the expansion.

I chose Aldaris with no knowledge of the game whatsoever. The others were Jim Raynor, Queen of Blades and Tassadar. For my Phase 1 card Tassadar and I chose the Special Victory cards. The other 2 (the experienced players) chose non SV cards.

I thought my choice was the strongest of the 3 available to me, but little did I know just HOW strong it was. In hindsight, I think either half of my SV card would be strong enough, but in combination, it's deadly.

I was able to expand to my second planet before my starter was invaded. I was quickly driven off of that one, and forced to turtle on my second planet while plowing through the event deck. Strategic placement of order tiles on top of other players' orders hastened the depletion of the event deck.

I won by drawing 2 "The End Draws Near". The Jim Raynor player had 15 points exactly at that time, but due to the victory card, that wasn't enough.

Played 2 3-player scenarios.

The first scenario was "We Need Samples" normal. I remember I started with the Teacher and the Truck Driver. I moved Rod the Truck Driver to the Police Station, did a search and made some noise, and found the sniper rifle. So for the rest of the game, we had this hilarious image of Rod in his winter hat, sitting in his lawn chair with his beer, just picking off random zombies. Meanwhile, my teacher was searching the school, keeping it clear with her special power. My secret objective was to complete the main objective and have 4 barricades in the colony. It was either misexplained or I misunderstood what the colony was. There were 5 barricades in play at the end, but not in the actual colony zone. However, since I had built about 6 barricades myself over the scenario, I counted that as a moral victory.

The second game was "Raiding Party" normal. I started with the Doctor and the Nurse. None of us had any good fighting characters. Within the first two rounds all the locations were maxed out with zombies and we had only one pile partially depleted. About 3 unfortunate bite exposures later and that's all she wrote on that scenario.

Finally a game I have played before!

We had our 3 player game continued this week. Well, 3 players but 6 characters. It's not a very well rounded group as there are some deficiencies, particularly in Wisdom, but overall there's one good in each category. Our group consists of Amaryllis, Damiel, Jirelle, Oloch, Feiya, and Ranzak.

We started with scenario 4b. That was the one with the water dragon? We had failed this scenario last session, so we went in with a different approach. Close locations asap. We got lucky with some card that allowed us to look at the top card of any location, and it was the villain! So we battered down all the other locations, then encountered him for the win.

5b. Pirate Council and henchmen ships. Our first attempt met with a swift end as the first ship encounter took 4 blessings off the top of the timer. Added to that not much luck in defeating encounters, and it went downhill quickly. Our second attempt went better knowing that the villain was a charisma/diplomacy check. Amaryllis, the best CHA, encountered him 3 times, including once for the end. She lost one of the previous two attempts, and actually the final battle, but at that point we had 9 plunder so we just bribed him for the win.

Finally got our first character card upgrades. Went a little non-traditional on both of mine (Amaryllis and Damiel) and took Dexterity on both. The next skill feat will be Constitution for Ama, and either Dex or Int for Damiel.

First time playing for me. I was randomly given Belle in a 5-player game. Her power would end up saving me about 6 or 7 bullets.

The very first turn, I snatched a gem from my car, headed to the roof, and moved to the engine. I think it was the second turn when I grabbed the briefcase. I would only get one more loot bag the rest of the game, but it was enough. I stayed mobile, so people couldn't punch me, and I could care less if I did get shot (which was only 4 times).

It played fast, and was semi-controlled chaos, which turned out to be quite fun. I'm not sure how it would have been if I'd been a valid target the whole time though.

Another first for me.

I think this game has an interesting concept, but I was probably in the wrong group for it tonight. It's like they were piloting Star Destroyers and I had a garbage scow. I must have died at least 12 times and missed out on at least that many points from being off the board at an inopportune time. I was so far behind that I got lapped. To be fair, 3rd place nearly got lapped too, it was just that kind of game. To me, it was kind of like Descent 2e, where once you're knocked out, game over. Every time I came back in I immediately took like 5 threat from other players or just the enemy ships. It was brutal.

Plus it took 3 hours. Definitely outstayed it's welcome in my book.

First time playing for all 4 of us. I only had the two starting gold cards so I missed out on the drafting frenzy, only picking up Army and Levies. However, my deck was thin on trash and high on food and military, so I built up an early lead, being able to cycle so quickly. However, that lead dissipated as we approached endgame. I say approached because no one wanted to trigger it, but could have, for an hour. As last place, I cleared off the 4th victory point card just to get a reasonable end time. According to our understanding of the rules, the person declaring end of game had to have a wide enough margin of victory to avoid losing first after all wars were resolved. This led to ANOTHER hour and a half of play as "kill the leader" was all the rage. Eventually, we did end up with a clear winner, but the manipulable endgame with such close scoring was a bit of a miss for me.It'd be different if it were the type of game where someone could open up a 20 point lead.

Having said that, and having played ASIE and AFAOS, I can say I like it better than the hidden team win condition of ASIE, and that it seems very much like a 4 player AFAOS. It seems Mr Wallace has a very limited design space.

I would play this one again though. Even though I finished last, it was fun being the leader for 2.5 hours.

This was a light variable player power push-your-luck kind of game. First time for me and we played 5 player. I started with a visible 5 and the Cabin Boy, so at least no one could take my 5 first round. I did however manage to steal the Captain's Black Spot as my "draw". I had the card to take half the monkey's coins, but I got too greedy. I could have played it when he had 6 coins but since everyone was buying I figured I'd wait one more turn. That's when the card that discards everyone's hand came down. Doh. Half of 12 monkey coins and another 7 points in cards gone. I think I should have Cut n Run that turn as I would have had about 27 points. I stayed in one more round though and was given the Slug, but managed to steal a 5 to balance it. So I Cut that turn. The 2 remaining players both had a Black Spot when the bag was empty so between the 3 survivors I was third but not by a lot.

I liked it quite a bit, although there were some wordings that I thought were questionable.

Would play again as a filler game.

Sticking with the Pirate theme, the 3 remaining players took up Black Fleet. It was my game, and the first time playing for all of us.

Mark had an amazing first two turns going second, and was able to buy his 11 really early. He had awesome fortune card draws the whole game, but eventually became one turn behind the 3rd player. Brian had a really good combo of having Pirate ships sink other Pirates for loot, and having his Pirate ship come onto the board with an extra 4 movement. Probably made 20 coin off of pirate on pirate violence alone. I ended up dead last only flipping my first three victory cards.

Despite that, it seems like a really fun 3 player game, and even more hijinks could ensue with the 4th player. Looking forward to trying this one again.

I didn't actually play this, since I was a spectator, but since I had the most experience out of the 6 of us, I was prompted to assist on strategies and help the newest player out. My protege had the Dwarves, and the other races were Alchemists, Cultists, Witches and Mermaids. I had arrived just a turn or two into the game, and everyone was basically in the middle of the board. The Alchemist player took a large early lead since he could pay for things with VP, and end up with a net gain anyway. He ended up being the only player I didn't counsel since it looked like he had a grasp. There ended up being a race for longest connected between 3 of the players. The cult tracks were dominated by the Cultists being 2x first and 2x second. The other firsts and seconds were split fairly evenly between the non-Dwarf factions. My initial advice to the Dwarf player was forget about towns and tunnel tunnel tunnel. He grabbed some fortunate bonus tiles at good times and profited from those. Long story short, Dwarves win by about 20, with Cultists making a good comeback showing in second, and Mermaids coming all the way from last to 3rd.

While I own this game, my copy is still in the shrink. So this was a first time playing. I knew the rules (or rather the concepts) but actually playing was a different story. I found that the 10 chip limit hurt me the most, as I was forced to buy cards I didn't want and used up the chips I did want. I was first player, but I only ended up with 3 points. All 3 other players ended with over 10.

I think I will trade my copy, since I don't think it's a fit with my primary group, and upon playing it, it just didn't appeal to me the way I thought it would.

I've owned this game since December but it's the first time we've played it. We played a few turns of the Invasion game to get everyone acquainted with the basics until the reset. Then we set up for a Race War game, keeping the same colors. Turn order was Yellow, Blue, Purple. Yellow chose Tile B, Blue chose Alchemy and I chose Outposts. (It's interesting that Outposts is zero VP and Alchemy is 1, do you count that?) We were playing a medium game. Interestingly, everyone had their clearly defined objective. Yellow was playing for gems, Blue for Science, and myself for cloning. Yellow had like 9 ruins tokens over the course of the game, giving him several extra cubes in the process. He also found the +1 VP Adv Tech early on, which helped him considerably. In a similar fashion my first play was to take Recruitment which doubled my clonings. But Blue found the best combo. He took (I think it was) Code of Law early on, and when combined with Alchemy, he was getting up to 3 Adv Tech per turn, by completing the basic tech for one, Code of Law for 2, and Alchemy an any cube off of Code of Law to complete it again for 3. Even he thought it was cheesy but as far as I know it was legit. So clearly, Blue triggered objective 1 first. I could have gotten the second at any time as I had 9 guys on the board, but I felt (rightly so) that I was in last, so I hung around trying to make points. 4 turns later, Yellow snatched up his 12th and 14th VP gem. Since he started it would be even turns. Blue's final play was to take an outer ring hex away from me, to give him net 5 over me. My last turn was to complete the units objective and gaining 1 more vp from killing Yellow.

Final scores were Yellow 50, Blue 45, and Purple 36.

All of us seemed to like the player board mechanics but there was concern about the whole "reset" mechanism. Overall, I think it went very well.

The owner of the game and the person who taught us, had played twice before, but unfortunately is not a rules reader by choice. This resulted in the rules being over an hour and several rules being missed or confused.

That said, I truly enjoyed this game. I did not care a whit about the theme, but the gameplay was interesting and I could see strategies emerge. By playing 5 players we only had 2 actions per decade, so it was hard to accomplish anything really, but 3 players still passed the 50 marker on the score track. I should say that I finished dead last, but I'm still thinking of picking this up.

We needed a really fast game while we were waiting on the last known arrival. I had just gotten the game on the 4th. (Mostly for the promos, but I figured we could try it out).

We played 5 player, so 5 rounds with 3 cards each. I must have done a decent job with the rules because everyone grasped it very quickly. I don't remember what the final scores were, but I remember them being within like 10 points from 1st to 5th.

I have all the Tempest games except for Canalis. Out of the two micro games in the series, this one is far more engaging.

I went with the merchant, and mostly due to player order, that was the only extra permanent worker I had the whole game. So while everyone else is playing with 9 or 10 workers to place I had 6. Due to my starting merchant I went with the trade goods "strategy" with trying to get ships when I could. I did score the Smugglers Capital building early which I used to the best advantage I could. Around Age 2, the other 5 players just basically gave up on even attempting to acquire trade goods, but they certainly blocked me on the ships. I only had 2 and everyone else had one. They did let me "have" the Navy building - One pick after the VP per trade good building...

For some reason the seasoned players were all worried about how effective my plan might be, but since I only scored 4 points off of majority control - I had zero figures in the New World as of like turn 5, I came in dead last by quite a large margin. I had two natural sets of 4 and two sets of three with the 2 ships and 2 sets of 3 randoms.

Having said that, I still enjoyed the game quite a bit. The guy who held an early lead most of the game ran out of steam and finished third, and he was pushing missionaries across to populate the heck out of the colonies. It was interesting to see two distinct gameplans not work. The first and second players were the ones who either had a lot of discovery points and/or cash.

I would play this again in the future, and definitely try a more soldier/captain oriented approach.

Only the second time playing for me. During the first half of the game, we spotted the Cylon early and Brig'd him to force him out. We were at 3 morale, but I had placed the winning jump on top of the destination deck. Unfortunately, when the player to the right of the Admiral jumped, the Admiral BURIED that card! Guess who the Cylon is. Needless to say, he turned on his turn, so now we had back to back Cylon turns. The Humans lost on morale, HOWEVER when building the loyalty deck, he put an extra Cylon card in there so there were 3 Cylons working against 3 Humans (well 2 humans and a human sympathizer) I was the sympathizer so no wonder I never got out of the brig! 3 people were sabotaging my check.

So the Humans counted that as a moral victory since the Cylons cheated.

Second time playing this too.

This time we played with the correct rules regarding negative Stability. We played with the special power side of each player board. I had Persia. It took me about 2 rounds to really get rolling with my military, but once I did I had most military most of the game. I also had Sun Tzu as my advisor for several rounds and I made good use of him. I wish I had read Anna Karene a little more closely as I had one opportunity to buy her. My armies cost 2 food and 1 food respectively, so with 3 meeples on each, that's 9 food plus the 9 food for the 3 workers. Ouch. I also had 2 workers from the Stability track but I stayed out of last for the most part. Unfortunately for me, my only food and Stability income were the starting techs at 2 each per meeple. I also missed out on a lot of points by being in third or last in books most of the game. So I finished in third. Second place was taken by the person on Emperor difficulty, while first and third were on Prince (Level 2).

I enjoy this game, and will play again.

First time playing for all 4 of us even though there were two owners playing.

I don't remember all the details, but I do remember we split into two teams very early. One of which lasted the whole game. The other was dissipated by the plague, one step before I could play the crown prince. We later reinstated our alliance but lost 4-3. I provided 1 point, so I finished last yet again.

I will reserve judgment for when we have 5 players since the alliances should wait to see at that point, but this game is not what was described. I was told it was going to be a political area control game with alliances and backstabbing, treachery and such. Turns out it is a wargame with VERY limited ways of getting your opponents out of an alliance. I guess with your own you can just attack your partner, but an opponents alliance is safe as long as they keep the couple out of danger. There's only 1 Assassinate card with a 50% chance of working (not counting the Secret Passage defense), and the Pope to annul it, but only at the request of one of the parties, so the pope would have to be one of the allied players. So realistically, as long as you can avoid the plague, your alliance is as solid as you want it to be.

As I said, I'm willing to try it again with 5 players, which keeps in play the alliance aspect but provides an odd number of players. About the only thing I was able to do was have a decent economy, which allowed me to build all my Knights and archers.

This is another one that I knew how to play and also own. We did not play my copy but rather a BEAUTIFULLY painted copy of another player. We played "The Alchemists" scenario, I think it was called, at level 6. We randomly divvied out the 12 starter heroes to the 3 players (The KS heroes were off being painted). My guild was Greensleeves, Hobsbawm, and Kanga. Blue was Diva, Johan, and Spike. Red was Wisp, Maya, and Zazu. After we drafted the 5 rounds of cards (levels 1-5) I had what I thought was mediocre equipment. I got Greensleeves Thorn and the 4 attack crossbow that only crits defend, along with the Amulet of Rawr. He was actually my best kitted hero. Hobsbawm only scored Astral Strike II, and Chaos Bolt II I believe. While Kanga took "advantage" of all the damage yourself to do cool stuff stuff. She ended up with Orc Beater, Celerity Stick, King's Armor and some Gauntlets that added 2 dice to a melee attack. So with 6 health and multiple ways to damage herself, it was pretty interesting.

Anyway, Blue got out to a huge early lead. By the time he made his first pvp kill (me) he had around 10 gold from monsters and about 12 more in treasure tokens. He also had Johan loaded up with 7 defense dice with 4 rerolls. Thank god it only took 3 hits to kill him, as my pvp crossbow was the only thing that could reliably injure him. Even then, I had to roll 7 hits to score 2 wounds. So, Blue came knocking on my door, killing me to take first blood, then Red portalled in behind him to join the fight. I think Blue then killed a Red, only needing a pve quest to end the game. In the alcove next to my starting zone was his "bomb" that he had to collect. Red and I worked together to stop him from completing the quest, while everybody was dropping the cursed treasure tokens for the next person to pick up. It was a bloodbath. After all the bloodshed, I emerged as the sole survivor, having taken the cursed treasure from Red. Now that everyone had completed their pvp quests, the action shifted to the upper right corner where I had earlier weakened the defenses on the Sister of Pain. Red stepped up, got smashed down, then I took a shot and did little damage. Blue stepped up and I think got through. Then we all wrangled for damage on the Sister. We all did at least 2 wounds to her, but I fortunately got the killing blow. Since I was the only one to complete that quest, I got 9 coins just from that. (5 for completing the scenario, 2 from her kill, and 2 from her quest card) Turns out, I would have been fine if Red had killed her, but if Blue had been able to, he would have won instead.

Red was the player who chose the game, but I think he decided he liked the rules of Super Dungeon Explore better. Blue and I, having only played AQ out of the 2 games, would probably continue to like AQ.

New to both of us. After basically reading the rules verbatim to "teach" it, we got underway with Hoax vs Vulca. The decks appeared to have been slightly modified by the previous owner.

We played best of 3, and the Vulca deck won every time. So since we traded decks between each round, that means I lost 2-1.

I can definitely see where the matchups could be interesting. I may go through and "purify" each faction, just to see how each one plays straight up.

Both my opponent and myself liked this one.

New to me, but not my opponent as it was his game. After a quick runthrough of the rules, we started in. We played best of 3 again. After he got off to a 4-0 flag lead, he ran out of gas, and I took the last 5 flags to go up 1-0. Second game, I didn't have very good cards, but his were worse, so I took that game 5-1(maybe 2) to sweep the series.

He lamented that he is not very good at his own game. I disagreed, but I can also sympathize. I can't remember the last time I won a game that I taught to new players.

My game, new to both of us. This time while teaching I did read much of it verbatim. It seemed easy enough to pick up. The included card reference sheet was a big help too. We once again played best of 3.

First game, he took two out of the three battlefields, while I took the other one. Then, in the next round he captured his 3rd different color with the first resolution, so he went up one game.

Second game was also over in 2 rounds I believe. This time I made the mistake of flipping a non-gem battlefield into a gemmed one, which he won with the second resolution to give him 3 different colors again.

Maybe we were missing something, but it didn't seem like it was possible to go past 2 rounds in this game. The chances of a draw at a battlefield are remote, so the best case scenario is 3-3 with no sets and a pair of same each.

I'll admit though, this game did exceed my expectations, which admittedly weren't very high after reading the rules once. But I think this one is still going to a better home.

So on an evening full of 2-player best of 3 series, the owner of the game lost all 3 series. It reaffirms my belief in Beginner's Luck.

So this was new to at least 3 of the 4 of us. I had watched Rodney Smith's video on the timed phase just prior to heading over there, so I had some idea of what was going on. I played the Chief Scientist. We played the tutorial mode. We kind of walked through the first 2 or 3 rounds following along with the app, getting to know our roles. Then when the timer kicked in it seemed almost natural. Of course, I had the easiest responsibilities, but it looked like everyone else was getting their actions in on time. I focused on techs that generated money and prevented loss on failures. I used the starting asset of using the "Exhaust" power of a tech quite often too. My favorite card was Xenobiology. I got 3 techs out with that. 2 3 cost and a 2. Much safer and faster than rolling for them over the same amount of time.

Anyway, long story short, we had South America fall off the chart and North America in the red, but during the final mission phase, our Squad Leader had saved his good rolls for that occasion. So we won the tutorial!

When I had watched Rodney's video, I saw 10-15 second turn times, and thought "WHAT? No way can you make a decision in that time!" But those were just the times for drawing cards, or assigning satellites, etc. The decision making turns were typically 20+ seconds.

Overall, I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would enjoy a timed game. It didn't feel like a co-op, because there was almost no discussions, but as the Scientist, it was my job to make everyone better at their jobs, so I felt cooperative in my role.

Definitely willing to play again.

This one didn't take much teaching time at all, as we were all familiar with KOT. Just the interaction with the buildings and the 3 different faces of the die were just about all that were needed.

I was Captain Fish, and he did not like land based buildings. I rolled a ton of destruction. So my path was quickly decided - a VP win vs KO. I had 10 VP just off of buildings, before I stole the Superstar card. That brought me up to 17 before it was stolen back. Then on my final turn, I rolled 3 Ouches to take the Statue of Liberty putting me at exactly 20. Obviously, I avoided Manhattan as best I could, with only 2 visits.

KOT seems to always start with everyone trying to roll nothing but energy (or non-claws) for the first couple of turns, not wanting to go into Tokyo. In this version, the start player is guaranteed to go into Manhattan. Plus, with so many other ways to gain stars in KONY, there's less incentive to want to be in Manhattan.

I for one, like this better than KOT, but not better than KOT + Power-Up. I feel that the special powers for each monster add quite a lot to the gameplay. If KONY makes something like that, Tokyo is fired for me.
