Play #1: January 2 Result: Loss in phase three What happened: I had six life left in the third phase and was feeling pretty good about my chances. I had a choice between Wild Tigers and Cannibalism, so I went for the 11 over the 14. My first two cards were 2 and 1. My next one was 0, but with x1 Copy. My fourth card was an aging card. 0 with a stop. I realized later that that just meant that I couldn't draw any more free cards, but at the time I thought it meant that my turn was over. So I guess this one gets an asterisk, but I count it as a loss. Final Score: not kept Current Record: 0-1 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Play #2: January 9 Result: Victory against pirates 25 and 30! What happened: My second draw of the game was against two cannibals (the toughest of the hazards). My third draw was against wild tigers. These turned out to be a blessing as I got to get rid of most of my useless cards in one go. I then cruised through the rest of it - 12 life left at the start of phase 2, 11 left at the start of phase 3, 9 left at the start of the pirate fight. I beat the 25 pirate with 6 life left, and then beat the 30 with four life left. Hooray! No Rebecca Black this week! Final Score: 52 (Level 1) Current Record: 1-1 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Play #3: January 16 Result: Loss in phase two What happened: I had nine life left going into the second phase. I couldn't get my good cards to come out at the right time, and I ended up going down to Further Exploring the Island. I spent my final life trying to get one more point to beat the card, and ended up drawing a 0. Alas. Final Score: not kept Current Record: 1-2 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Play #4: January 23 Result: Loss in phase two What happened: I had seven life left going into the second phase and had not yet gotten rid of any aging cards. And that ended up being my downfall - I had two of them come out when I needed 5 to win a card, and that was pretty much the final nail in my coffin. Final Score: not kept Current Record: 1-3 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
*posted on Saturday since Friday was kind of hectic
Play #5: January 30 Result: Loss in phase three What happened: I had ten life left going into the second phase and felt pretty good about it. However, the aging cards got in my way again and I entered the third phase with one life remaining. Sure enough, the aging cards killed me again. Final Score: not kept Current Record: 1-4 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Play #6: February 6 Result: Loss to the second pirate What happened: I had 16 life left going into the second phase, and eight going into the third. I made it to the pirates with five life remaining, and was able to defeat the 7/25 pirate with three life. Unfortunately, my final pirate was the one whose total is determined by the remaining hazard cards. I hadn't been successful enough getting some of those bigger cards into my hand instead of the hazard deck, and I ended up needing 59 points to win. I wasn't even close. I need better planning next time I face that one. Final Score: not kept Current Record: 1-5 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Play #7: February 13 Result: Defeated pirates 16 and 30 What happened: I really went after those stronger cards today, and it paid off big time. I had 8 life going into phase two, and 7 going into phase 3. I made it to the pirates with 3 life left, but I had only one aging card in my deck and a lot of power cards. Pirate 16 is the one where extra fighting cards costs 2 life instead of 1, but I didn't lose a single life as I took him down first. I had built up to 7 life at that point, and I cruised to a victory against the 30 pirate with 4 life left. Rebecca gets the week off. Final Score: 73 (Level 1*) Current Record: 2-5 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
*I've decided that if I ever win again, I'll be going on to level 2 the next time.
Play #8: February 20 Result: Defeated pirates 9/35 and 5/* (every aging card is +2 to the value) What happened: Going after the big cards early seems to be the way to go. I was able to get rid of a lot of my junk really quickly, and I was able to get rid of my aging cards quickly as well. I had ten life going into phase two, eight going into phase three, and six going into the pirates. I faced the 5/* pirate first just before I added my seventh aging card, which meant he had a value of 12. I looked this up to be sure - you calculate the pirate before the fight, and it doesn't change. I beat it quickly, and then knocked off the 9/35 pirate with four life left. Victory! Final Score: 72 (Level 1) Current Record: 3-5 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Rebecca Black is feeling lonely since I've won twice in a row. On to Level 2 next week!
Play #9: February 27 Result: Defeated pirates 7/16 (each additional fighting card costs 2 life points) and 5/* (every aging card is +2 to the value) What happened: This one was intense. Adding that extra aging card for Level 2 really threw me off at first. I wasn't thinning my deck as quickly as I've been able to recently, and I ended up with 6 life heading into phase two. I made a decision, since the pirates had relatively low values, to not worry about the bigger cards and just focus on surviving to the end. I did get one cannibal and one wild animal into my deck, but the rest were lower values. I only had three life remaining going into phase three, but then things finally started to pick up and I went into the first pirate fight with four life. I fought the 5/* first since I had only taken six aging cards, and managed to beat it with three life remaining. Then I hit a streak of extra life points in my free cards for the 7/16 pirate, and managed to cruise to victory with 6 life left. Final Score: 66 (Level 2) Current Record: 4-5 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
That's a streak of three wins! I probably need more of a challenge, but I want at least one more win in Level 2 before I move on the Level 3.
Play #10: March 6 Result: Defeated pirates 7/25 and 8/30 What happened: I was sure I was going to die several times during this game. The extra aging time hit me in my first turn as I was trying to use Wild Animals to thin my deck, and then I got some other cards I didn't want to destroy (+2 life and a 2). I eventually was able to thin, but it cost me a lot of life. At one point in the first phase, I was down to four life. When I got down to zero in the second phase, I just knew I was toast. But I had been smart about getting some +1 life cards in my deck, and I was able to make it to the pirates with 3 life left. I beat the 7/25 pirate with no life left, and then managed to weasel past the 8/30 pirate with 3 life remaining. Success! Final Score: 57 (Level 2) Current Record: 5-5 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Four wins in a row! The extra aging card is quite painful, but so far I've been able to survive. On to Level 3 next week!
Also...I think this is the first time I ended up with every single aging card in my deck at one point or another.
Play #11: March 13 Result: Loss in phase three (Level 3) What happened: Tragedy. I knew I was in trouble when I ended phase one with one life left. But I had gotten all the junk out, and I was able to get both cannibal cards in my deck and thought I had a decent chance. Nope - I made it to phase three with two life left, but had one life left when I hit two aging cards in a row. That pretty much sealed my fate. Alas. Final Score: Not kept Current Record: 5-6 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
The aging card that officially killed me was the very stupid card, the one I added for Level 3 just today. Rebecca Black has come back with a vengeance.
Play #12: March 20 Result: Defeated pirates 9/35 and 10/40 What happened: Once again, I struggled in the first phase, but ended it on a relative high note with three life left. In the second phase, I managed to get both Cannibals in my deck AND I ended the phase with six life. I was down to four by the end of the third phase, and down to three after defeating the 9/35 pirate. I knew I had enough points in my deck to defeat the 10/40 pirate, but it literally came down to the last minute - I spent my final life point to draw the next card, which happened to be the last two fighting points I needed. It also happened to give me another life, so I ended with one! Final Score: 57 (Level 3) Current Record: 6-6 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Good to know that I can still win, if just barely. We'll see how it goes next week before I determine when to move on to Level 4.
Play #13: March 27 Result: Defeated pirates 9/22 (only half of the face up fighting cards count) and */* What happened: I seemed to get my rhythm today. I ended the first phase with 5 life left, and the second phase with 4. I still had 4 when I got to the first pirate. I chose to go with 9/22, and this one is difficult to calculate - you have to keep track of what you have used, how many cards you have, and the highest possible total. I still had four life when I got to 22 fighting points, so it was on the */*. I had done really well with getting fighting cards into my deck, and there was only one that had a value of more than 3 (it was 6). The total ended up being 21 in 7 cards, and I was able to succeed with 6 life remaining! Final Score: 83 (Level 3) Current Record: 7-6 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
That's my record high for a score. And it's the second week in a row that I've beaten Level 3. Must mean it's time to go on to Level 4 next week. Lucky 13 for me - I'm 25% of the way through this project, and am having a great time so far. I've won 6 of my last 7, but it's been very exciting every time. I have a feeling that losing that extra two life is going to hurt next week, but I never got below two this time, so it's possible.
Play #14: April 3 Result: Loss in phase three What happened: Missed it by that much! I ended the first phase with five life and the second with four. However, I was a little concerned that I wasn't getting rid of my aging cards quickly enough...at least one was always still in my deck when I reshuffled. I got to the final fight before the pirates with three life left. I was very happy to see two "With the raft to the wreck" cards come up. I drew my one free card, and it was valued at zero. I didn't really want to spend my last three life just to skip it, so I spent one in hopes that I would get one of my high cards. But alas - I drew the very stupid card (-3). I had to waste my last two life trying to dig out of that hole, and I couldn't do it. NOOOOOOOO!!!! Final Score: not kept Current Record: 7-7 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
My first time with Level 4, and it wastes no time in kicking my tail. We'll try this again next week!
Play #15: April 10 Result: Loss in phase two What happened: There's no way around it. I got destroyed this week. I had four life by the time phase one ended, but I had been all the way down to zero at one point. And I just kept NOT getting the cards I needed. Plus those aging cards kept coming out at very inconvenient times. It was a slaughter. Final Score: not kept Current Record: 7-8 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
This week was extremely humbling. Here I was, thinking I'd gotten the hang of this game. Nope.
Play #16: April 17 Result: Loss in phase three What happened: I was feeling pretty good about ending phase one with five life, but knew I was in trouble when I ended phase two with only one remaining. And I think I would have done fine if the STOP aging card hadn't come up as the second free card when I was trying to beat Wild Animals in phase two. Alas, I was unable to recover, and ended up with the loss. Final Score: not kept Current Record: 7-9 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Those aging cards have been brutal to me the last few weeks. And to think, I once had a winning record...
Play #17: April 24 Result: Loss in phase two What happened: I had to call a mulligan on my first attempt because for some reason, there were two aging cards in my first time through the deck. The second attempt didn't go well. I only had three life left at the end of phase one, and then I couldn't get more at convenient times and ended up losing. Again. Final Score: not kept Current Record: 7-10 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Four weeks in a row. I have to adjust my strategy.
Play #18: May 1 Result: Defeated pirates 7/16 and 8/30 What happened: Looking back at my strategy, I decided I needed to slow down the first time through the deck. I had been very aggressive, going for the bigger cards first to thin my deck quickly. As a result, however, aging cards were getting added at a rate I couldn't keep up with and that was my downfall. This time, I tried to slow play it a little more, fighting smaller cards the first time through my deck and stopping when I had enough to destroy. It worked - I had 3 life at the end of phase one and 7 at the end of phase two. I was back down to 3 by the time I took on the 7/16 pirate, but up to 6 after defeating it. I didn't lose any life to that one, which was good since that is the pirate that costs 2 life per extra fighting card. I ended up with 5 life after defeating the 8/30 pirate, breaking my four-week losing streak! Final Score: 67 (Level 4) Current Record: 8-10 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Since I don't have to listen to Rebecca this week, here is this week's victory song, brought to you by Cake and Speed Racer:
Play #19: May 8 Result: Defeated pirate 5/*, lost to pirate 9/35 What happened: So close! I ended phase one AND phase two with four life, and phase three with two. I managed to keep the aging cards under control - for once they weren't the ones that did me in. However, after defeating the 5/* pirate (the * ended up being 14 since I had taken in 7 aging cards), I only had one life left. I was only able to get up to 28 before running out of life for the 9/35 pirate. NOOOOOOOOO! Final Score: not kept Current Record: 8-11 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
This was the first time in this project that I've made it to the pirates and not been able to finish. Very sad.
Play #20: May 15 Result: Defeated pirates 9/35 and 7/35 What happened: I got some lucky breaks early in this one, and managed to finish phase one with five life and phase two with seven. There was one heartstopping moment when I used an ability that allowed me to draw two cards and I ended up drawing two aging cards. But I was able to destroy one with a card ability, and was able to forfeit the necessary two life to destroy the other. I ended phase three with four life. I had just reshuffled my deck, so I went after 9/35 first, since he's the one that beat me last week. I won this one with three life left, and got back up to four by the time I beat 7/35. Huzzah! Final Score: 62 (Level 4) Current Record: 9-11 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Play #21: May 22 Result: Loss in phase two What happened: Some really bad draws in the beginning brought me down to ZERO LIFE by the end of the first phase. At that point, I was desperate, so I adopted the motto of "go big or go home", and started taking some stupid risks. I managed to defeat Cannibals and Wild Animals (still with zero life) before I finally went down to the other Cannibals card. Ah well. At least I went down swinging. Final Score: not kept Current Record: 9-12 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Play #22: May 29 Result: Defeated pirates */* and 9/35 What happened: A good week. Because of the */* pirate, which makes me fight against all remaining hazard cards, I decided that I need to be really aggressive after my initial run through my deck. I made it to the end of the first phase with one life left, and didn't have either Cannibal in my deck. I resolved to get them both in the next phase because that 14 in the third phase is not good. I did manage to get both, as well as both Wild Animals cards, and ended the second phase with three life. I entered the pirate phase with four life, and took on */* first, who turned out to be 6/18. I beat him, but had only one life left afterwards. I then turned my attention to 9/35, and very nearly lost it, but won with one life left. Huzzah! Final Score: 60 (Level 4) Current Record: 10-12 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Well, time for the victory dance of the week. Hammer, don't hurt 'em.
*It finally happened...I missed a Friday. But I had other priorities yesterday. We had to rush my dog to the hospital because he possibly ate some ibuprofen, Aleve, and/or Tylenol. He's still there, and my Friday game went right out of my mind. So, I made it up Saturday morning.
Play #23: June 6* Result: Loss in phase two What happened: I had four life at the end of phase one, but I had way too thin a deck and was not able to get rid of aging cards quickly enough. As a result, two came out in one attack, and I was done. Final Score: not kept Current Record: 10-13 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
Quick update on the dumb dog...he's fine. Back to his normal stupid self. Probably didn't learn a thing. He was kind of listless for a couple of days after the hospitalization, but he seems to be doing fine now. We're keeping an eye on him.
Play #24: June 12 Result: Loss in phase three What happened: I got to the end of phase one with five life left and already had a cannibal card in my deck, so I was feeling pretty good about my chances. I got to the end of phase two with two life left, but I still thought I was doing OK. Then I hit a bad run of cards in phase three that nearly wiped me out, and then I lost it against a raft to the wreck. A RAFT TO THE WRECK! Grrr. Final Score: not kept Current Record: 10-14 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
I've been talking about how dumb my dog is, yet I'm the one who keeps subjecting myself to Rebecca Black.
Play #25: June 19 Result: Defeated pirates 6/20 and 9/22 What happened: I ended phase one with 6 life left. I did have to go back and reset a little as I didn't understand why I kept getting two aging cards in a row when I was only supposed to have one in the deck, then realized I was drawing from the wrong pile. I did eventually get to the point where I was consistently leaving one aging card in my deck when I hit a reshuffle point, and that worried me because that's how I usually go out. But I had four life left at the end of phase 2 and three at the end of phase 3. I went after pirate 9/22 first since I had just reshuffled, and thought that would give me the best chance because he only counts half of your face up fighting cards. I beat him with four life left, then beat 6/20 with six life left for victory! Final Score: 84 (Level 4) Current Record: 11-14 Number of times listened to Rebecca Black:
I finish up Page One here with a victory that also happens to be my record high score. Huzzah! Time for the Victory Dance!
