for putting together this challenge!

I participated in last year's challenge and enjoyed both having a focus for games that I wanted repeat plays of and tracking my progress throughout the year.

After completing that challenge in mid-December, I began thinking of games that I wanted on my list for this year. While it was easy to think of games, actually committing to them was more difficult because the Cult of the New continues to prevail in my primary gaming circles and, on top of this, two of my weekly gaming nights evaporated last year. So, I legitimately wondered if I'd be able to get in ten plays for some of my proposed games.

Therefore, this year's challenge will feature a couple of games that are solo by design or can be played as such, and I'll let myself count online plays for games, whereas last year I wanted to complete the challenge with in-person plays only. I still do, but I don't want to be victimized by the CotN to the extent that I'll fail the challenge. (I just realized that nowhere have I noted that this is a hardcore entry—I've taken that fact for granted.)

One nice surprise from last year's challenge was the occasional thumb or friendly comment that I received somewhere in my GeekList. I hadn't expected anyone to care about my personal challenge, so it was an entirely pleasant surprise to have received encouragement or an amusing observation at random points through the year.

So, to anyone who stumbles on this year's entry, you're more than welcome to say hi or to post a comment as you feel moved. Ideally, being a part of this hobby should bring people together where they might not have been otherwise! (Just kindly be mindful not to post strategy spoilers—while I do enjoy discussions on strategy, I also greatly value the joy of discovery that comes from repeat plays of games.)

While I somewhat enjoyed my initial ~4 plays of this game (spread over ~3 years), I never had any idea what was going on or what I should be aiming to do. Instead, I contented myself with being a junior member of the team and hoped to gain greater understanding along the way.

Having later traded for this game, late last year I tried a solo game as a trial to see if I wanted to include the game in this year's challenge. Even though I played a few rules incorrectly, I enjoyed the game and that one play not only passed the trial, it made me realize how poorly I'd previously been taught the game. (Thanks, guys!)

So, I'm looking forward to my ten plays and seeing how much replayability there is here. With only 7 Location Cards per neighbourhood, I do wonder if the encounters there will begin to feel repetitive after a certain number of plays.

Long out of print, this game came into my possession of a couple of years ago, but I only played it for the first time late last year. It kind of reminded me of 7 Wonders, what with the way certain buildings can be built for free if one has already built a prerequisite building.

Hopefully ten plays will be enough to determine if this game is worth keeping or if it should find a new home.

As with Attika above, I played this game for the first time late last year despite having it for at least a year before that.

This game, though, was a gift, and so I didn't know much about it before playing it, other than a smattering of facts (Canadian designer, KickStarted by Valley Games, solo-able). I was surprised by the amount of dice rolling—yes, despite the name! Hopefully the game will grab me within ten plays, or it'll be off to the trade pile.

This game appeared on my challenge list last year, but in June it was announced that 10 (of 36 48! (Oops, confused recruit count with artifact count.)) recruits in the game "were either overpowered or underpowered" and were thus being revised.

One on hand, I see this as an indication that the game wasn't sufficiently playtested prior to initial release (a broader effect of the Cult of the New?). On the other, I give credit to the designers for recognizing the problem and for taking steps to improve the game.

I only played the game a handful of times after this announcement, eventually deciding that I didn't want to continue developing my understanding of the game when it was effectively not the finished product. Now that the revised cards are available, I figure that it's appropriate to add the game to this year's list. Hopefully my enjoyment of the game will increase with a greater breadth of useful recruits available!

This was my designated alternate for last year's challenge. I wrote then:
Quote:
Love the clever use of colour in this game, but while I've played it ~10 times, the plays have been too spaced apart for me to get a good feel for the game. My hope is that it will turn out to have a depth of strategy to it.

Since it was my alternate, I didn't need to get in ten plays, but I still hoped to. Ended the challenge with only 3.

Not sure why there's so little love for the 2010 Deutscher Spiele Preis winner, so this year I'll make sure to get in those ten plays, and perhaps I'll find out. Or maybe I'll find that it's simply under-appreciated.

It took me a good couple of plays to wrap my head around the rules of this game (and a few more to realize that my group had been wrongly allowing the player with the Investor card and a Swiss Bank to invest twice), but I've enjoyed each play. It feels about the same weight and complexity as Power Grid, but very different—and I can't see myself turning down an opportunity to play either.

This game shares two things in common with Euphoria for me: they were both new to me last year and were both enthusiastically added to that year's challenge list. Unlike Euphoria, though, this one hasn't gone through any revisions—I'm simply including it again because I want to play it more!

Having played this game over a hundred times in person and online, I wondered if I should focus my ten plays on one of the expansion maps so as to explore its unique geography and nuances.

Then, a couple of days ago, I taught the base game to one new player and re-taught a couple of others who'd played once or twice a year or two ago. I came in last. blush

Yeah, I clearly have a lot to learn in this game, so there's no need to artificially restrict my plays to a single expansion map.
