Inspired by Michael several years ago, I had a good run of Board Game resolutions. For the curious, here's my past lists:

2013 Resolutions
2012 Resolutions
2011 Resolutions

Then in 2013 my wife and I bought a house and spent the next year gutting and renovating it. That pretty much killed the remainder of my 2013 list and meant no 2014 list. But now it's 2015 and it's time for a new list! Usually I do a wrap up based on last year, but we'll skip it this time. Onward!

Play 10 Games that are New to Me

Status: CLOSED!

My favorite chestnut from past lists. I love learning new games! This year I'll learn at least 10 new ones! Yay!

1. Patchistory (1/1) - Started the year out right! A group of us got together for some civ games on new years day.
2. Fields of Arle (1/3) - More excellent gaming. Thanks to Mark for teaching me this one.
3. Imperial Assault (1/8) - Thursday night games. Super awesome. Thanks to Christian for bringing and teaching.
4. Wir Sind Das Volk! (1/10) - Special thanks to Mark for actually taking my copy home and learning it to teach me.
5. Patchwork (1/18) - Really nice 2p game from Rosenburg.
6. Roll For the Galaxy (1/21) - Thanks to Robin for picking this one for the game of the week. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
7. Who is the Sunflower? (1/21) - Who is the Sunflower?
8. The Resistance: Avalon (1/22) - Thanks to Bess and the BURPS crew for good spirits and ruckus gaming.
9. Arkwright (1/23) - Thanks to Michael, Jay, and Grant for kicking off Meaty Game nights for 2015.
10. Las Vegas: Boardwalk (2/14) - Thanks to Mr. Steve for bringing forward another obscure dice game. I'm not too familiar with Las Vegas, but I guess we played the rare import expansion variants.
11. Kanban: Automotive Revolution (2/14) - Thanks to Joe for teaching this one.
12. Battle at Kemble's Cascade (2/14) - Thanks to all who tolerated my bizarre game interests.
13. Keyflower: Merchants (2/26)
14. Sushi Go (2/27)
15. Night of the Vampires (2/27) - Thanks to all willing to play a glow in the dark magnet game.
16. Aquasphere (3/5) - Thanks to Grant for bringing and teaching
17. Quantum (3/19) - Thanks to Christian for teaching me a neat dice game.
18. Harbour (3/28) - Thanks to Todd for teaching this one.
19. Super Mother Load (3/28) - Thanks to Todd for teaching this one.
20. Castles of Mad King Ludwig - Thanks to Chuck for teaching his new 10.

Roads and Boats Challenge

Status: FAILURE

This is another repeat. Several years ago I set out to have the most plays of this epic game logged on bgg. Life got in the way, but I'm still on the hunt. Things have gotten a little trickier since it was reprinted in 2013, but I'm still on the board.

The top spot has 43 plays as of writing this. I have 28. I'm 4 plays from #2 and quite a few from king of the mountain. I'm not logging/counting 1p games, but I will count 2p games.

Game #29: 5p Disneyland Basic

In retrospect, I wouldn't have picked this map for new players. I don't know that I've ever played the basic version before. For those unfamiliar with it, it's a map from the expansion book with the expansion bits stripped out of it. I ended up picking it because I had a surprising amount of interest in playing R&B at a library event Saturday and I couldn't find my book of 5p maps. This session has prompted me to redesign my map book. I think I'm going to cull the internet again for good maps and put it all in a spiral bound report.

The position at the top of the 5-pointed star is especially tough. Had I realized it I would have I have urged everyone to put me in that spot. There were 3 new players and 1 player who had just a few games under his belt. That top position really requires a lot of negotiation otherwise you get boxed out of the mines pretty easily. My other thought is to start categorizing 5-6p maps as how heavy negotiation they might entail. Last year at BGF, I realized that not everyone likes the deal-making and resource sharing that can come up in R&B, especially when the map is small enough that we're tripping over each other. It might even be wise to build a "deal-less" variant onto small maps by adding more space to them. I'll noodle that one too.

Paint 10 Miniatures

Status: CLOSED!

Usually I have a painting related challenge. This year I'm setting the bar pretty low due to the fact that my studio isn't even set up. I'm hoping that I managed to blow way past this goal, but I'll be happy if i just get things up and moving this year. I have a metric ton of things backed up on my theoretical bench: George's Space Hulk and 40k figs, Mice and Mystics expansion, Super Dungeon Explore set, Kingdom Death figs, Mansions of Madness, Relic Knights, and more. Plus I have more preorders and kickstarters coming down the pipeline in 2015. I just need to get off my butt, unpack my studio, and get to work. Here's hoping.

Game Nights!

Status: CLOSED!

Last fall I started hosting a game night every other Thursday. In the past I've hosted special events and meaty game nights. This year I have two goals for game nights.

1) Continue hosting regular Thursday Night events.

Once upon a time I was part of a regular group that meets Thursday nights. We even formed our own guild, BURPS. For various reasons this event was suspended. In an effort to bring back the awesome times, several people in my local group have taken on the shared burden of hosting the weekly game night. My commitment is the 1st and 3rd Thursday every month.

2) Bring back Meaty Game Nights.

In the long, long ago, I had a resolution to host a Meaty Game night each month. I used it as a platform to play some really neat things like Republic of Rome and Virgin Queen. While I'm less interested in such experimental game experiences these days, I would like to play some games that require specific kinds of tailoring. Either they take a long time and we need to set aside a day or I need to find just the right mix of people who want to play an Econ game or a Civ game or something like that. I'm not setting out to play one a month, but I would like to put out the effort to do them again.

Update 1/25 - I successfully hosted 2 BURPS nights this night as well as 1 meaty game night. They all came out pretty well. I think I'm going to start a separate geeklist to catalog the meaty game night attractions.
Update 3/9 - Game night every other week has been going really strong. This past Thursday we had 9 players and we stayed up till like 3 in the morning. It was riotous. I've also gotten a few meaty games to the table and even created that geeklist: Meaty Game Night

Capture the Fire

Status: CLOSED!

I want to start having more good gaming sessions than bad. Recently I've been feeling a lot like playing games is more hassle than fun. There's lots of reasons for this and I'm not 100 percent sure how to fix it. Not long ago I used an analogy for what I'm looking for in a gaming experience. It goes something like this...you need oxygen, fuel, and heat to make fire. That's the fire triangle. A good gaming experience works the same way. The Game Triangle requires 1) At least one person who is excited about the game, 2) the right time and place, and 3) ???

1) It's pretty important that someone is excited about a game. Logistically this means that someone is going to go to the effort of aquiring a copy, learning the rules, and wrangling people into the game.
2) Games take time and space. Sometimes a lot of both. They often take multiple players. It's amazing that with work, school, kids, and all the other directions life pulls you anyone ever plays a game.
3) This is the tricky part. What is it that makes one game session fun and another one a slog? Why do the exact same group of people gel perfectly one day and fight the next? There's some essential thing that makes a gaming session great (importantly, I'm not talking about an individual game and the qualities that make it great, I'm talking about a gaming session -- I think you can have fun playing just about anything).

For this goal I want to try and have more great gaming experiences than poopy ones. I don't really know how yet, but I have a whole year to figure it out.

Be Riskier with Speculating

Status: CLOSED!

I try to keep my board game collection "revenue neutral". Meaning I make more money off of buying/selling/trading than I spend in acquiring new games. I've been pretty successful with that up to this point. Part of this involves speculating on buying a game cheap now and selling it at a profit later. Sometimes it means finding a good trade deal, sometimes it means finding an out of print gem at a flea market, sometimes it means buying into a kickstarter. There are lots of ways to find that cool deal and I'm pretty decent at it. But I'm risk adverse. I'll find something I think will make money and I buy a copy of it. When it ends up paying off, I'm also sad I didn't buy 3. This year I'm going to try and be a little riskier. I don't have any prospects as of writing this, but that's why we have all year.
