Previous Session Reports

With another year circling the toilet, it was time once again for the CBBS to gather solemnly and bemoan the previous sad and pointless three hundred and sixty-five days. Also, to play games. Tim, Nyck, Jerry, Alan, New Eric, Andy, Kelli, Dave, Erik V., Aaron, two separate and distinct Toms, Lynette, Shawn, Ian, and Kory were the participants in this pathetic display.

To celebrate winter's icy grip of death and despair, we broke out Ricochet Robots. As light and heat disappears from the earth, so does our will and sense of worth depart as we solve these puzzles in 23 moves or less, combined:

Tim, Nyck, Jerry, Alan, New Eric, Andy, Kelli, and Dave all earned at least one chip, as you can see in this action photo:

In recognition of the long, dark, almost Scandinavian nights that come with the New Year, the first configuration consisted of three long and fairly involved games. On Table Two, this took the form of Kingsburg, played by New Eric, Kelli, Erik, and Dave.

Incidentally, this might have been Dave's first time at the CBBS. Or, it could be that old age has robbed your humble narrator of the intellectual wherewithal to remember names and faces. Either way, welcome Dave!

Erik built 14 buildings, five more than his nearest competitor, so it is not surprising that he won handily with 45 points.

Kelli's nine buildings got her 35 points, while Dave scored 34 points via his eight buildings. New Eric's nine buildings earned him a final score of 30 points.

(Of course, there are other ways to score points in Kingsburg besides building buildings - but the scoresheet gives us no information about those. Whatever.)

Table One was the scene for a six player game of the Hyperborea prototype. Actually, it was a real live copy of the game, but since Andy got so many rules wrong it might as well have been a pre-production copy. (Boo-yah!) Nah, it wasn't that bad, and the minor rules issues probably didn't give anybody an unfair advantage. But more on that anon - Tim, Lynette, Nyck, Andy, Alan, and the Aaron/Tom tag team were the players.

There are a lot of things going on in this game, but at it's core is a kind of deck-building mechanism using cubes you put in your bag. You draw cubes out, and different colored cubes combine with each other to do different things - explore, attack, buy powers, score points, that kind of thing.

The biggest rule we got wrong was that the cubes should stay on your board until you refresh, rather than being moved to the waste area after doing an action. So, each cycle of your bag you can only do a green explore action once, you can only use each card once, etc. This means that stockpiling one color of cube isn't very useful, as you won't be able to use all those (e.g.) greens unless you have a bunch of green-using cards or something. But, since none of us really knew what we were doing anyway, it probably didn't have that big an impact on the final outcome.

Anyway, Tim used his extra movement action and the fact that there were a lot of ruins in the areas around his home base to get three ghosts fairly quickly, and also get a lot of the one-off bonus chits, which were extremely useful. He also had a card that turned grey cubes into colored cubes, which allowed him to get to 15 (more than anybody else), while he was simultaneously scoring more in-game points than everybody as well. In the end that gave him an easy win at 44 points.

Alan got a lot of cube points, Lynette scored a bunch of in-game points (using a card which turned grey into points), and Nyck got the most points from cards, but it wasn't enough to keep up with Tim. Alan finished with 32, Lynette scored 31, Nyck and Andy ended up with 26, and Aaron (replaced by Tom for the final series of turns) wound up scoring 29.

Tim also would like people not to turn the camera sideways when they take pictures, as his software automatically corrects it when reviewing the pictures, but bgg does not - so he doesn't know he has to manually rotate until it shows up on its side like this one. Also, Tim would much rather just complain about things like this than actually fix them later.

Back in the Lounge, Jerry, Shawn, Tom, Kory, and Ian once again broke out Terra Mystica, because those guys are crazy.

Shawn played the Yetis, Jerry was the Chaos Magicians, Tom was the Dwarves, Ian the Withces, and Kory the Cultists.

After three and a half hours, it was discovered that Shawn had scored 136 points! Somehow! That was more than any other single player, and thus he was awarded the victory.

Jerry ended up with 116 points. That got him second place. Ian's 92 points, meanwhile, was good enough for third. Kory wound up with 75; according to my calculations, that puts him in fourth. Tom's 56 points got him to the final ordinal position.

It seemed like a number of gamers didn't really understand the concept of a New Year's Eve Game Night, as they left long before midnight. That left Kelli and New Eric alone on Table Two, where they whiled away a few tens of minutes playing TransAmerica until the reconfig.

It appears that New Eric pitched a shutout, as he is credited with 12 points while Kelli scored zero. Zounds!

It was not clear how long the Lounge was going to be, so we did what any rational gamer does in that situation - play We Didn't Playtest This At All. Tim, Tom, Lynette, Kelli, New Eric, Andy, and Nyck were the erstwhile non-playtesters.

This was a strangely acrimonious game, probably because the New Year reminded us all of the futility and pain of mortal existence.

But! Tim won game one on the very first card by correctly Dueling Andy and tricking him into completing Tim's prime. (Not in a dirty way.)

In Game Two, Kelli lost by pointing, and then everybody else lost on a Vote, the particulars of which are lost in the mists of time. "Everybody loses" is the best, most life-like outcome possible of any game. Hooray!

In Game Three, Tim and Andy Lost via Rock Paper Scissors (curse you, scissors!), while Tom and Lynette failed to touch their Noses in time. New Eric was then destroyed by Lasers, allowing Kelli to Win by being the only Girl left.

In Game Four, Andy Won on the first card by completing his own prime (again, not in a dirty way) via the finger shoot. Zounds!

In Game Five, Tim eliminated New Eric with a Go Fish card, then Kelli and Nyck Lost by throwing an even number of fingers. Then Tim and Tom Lost by throwing an odd number of fingers, which shows how much they were paying attention. Finally, Andy and Lynette both Won when Andy played the PC card.

With us all good and angered up, we decided to just sit and eat worms. Also, Tom, Alan, Lynette, Kelli, New Eric, Andy, Nyck, and Tim played Pickomino.

After crapping out on his first roll, Tim then got three big tiles and looked to be in control of this game. But Kelli was also accumulating slightly less valuable tiles, so when Tim had his small topper stolen in the final round, Kelli was able to end the game with 8 worms, just beating Tim out of his rightful victory and leaving him with just seven worms. Alan and Lynette at least pretended to compete, scoring 3 and 2 worms respectively, while New Eric got one worm and everybody else traded crap-outs and cheap steals and wound up with zero worms. Serves them right.

That's not them, by the way. That's a photo of a later game of Pairs. I put it here simply to keep you all on your toes, but obviously your toes are all not properly kept upon. For shame.

Anyway, Jerry lost twice! Kory lost once. Ian lost once; Shawn lost zero times?

To ring in the actual New Year, we all gathered solemnly around Table One, and played a silly, angry game of 6 Nimmt!. And here's another thing - why is it still called Category 5 in the BGG database? It hasn't been available under that name for years, yet you can easily by German copies of 6 Nimmt! from Gamesurplus or amazon.de or any number of places. It's enough to make a session reporter harrumph. Harrumph!

Anyway, Andy, Nyck, Tim, Jerry, Shawn, Tom, Alan, Lynette, Kory, Ian, Kelli, and New Eric made up the twelve gamers engaging in this holy rite.

Tom was the only one who managed to break the 67 point barrier, ending the game after the proper interval of three rounds with 76 points. Ian wound up in eleventh place, sandwiching a good 8 point second round with two rounds worth 54 for a total of 62. Kory scored 14, 32, and 14 to end up with 60 points (a helpful hint - if you can avoid those thirty point rounds, it will really help your final score). Lynette, not to be outdone, scored 14, 26, and 14, which gave her 54 points and ninth place.

Nyck and Alan tied for seventh with 50 points each, although Nyck scored evenly while Alan did well in round 2 and quite poorly in the other two. Shawn finally got the hang of it, bageling round three to salvage 45 points for sixth. New Eric's first round was enough to sink him to 40 points and a fifth place finish.

Tim bageled the first round and took just one row in the third - but his second round saw him with no cards above 85, which meant by the third card he could not play at the end of any row and always had to shoot the gaps. With fewer than eleven players you can often get away with playing your highest card in that situation, but if you are dodging both sixth and eleventh place, you have to get really lucky to avoid taking a lot of points. Tim was not lucky (at least in that round) and ended up in fourth place with 35 total points.

Andy had a similar albeit slightly better story as Tim, bageling round two but punting round one and taking a few cards in round three to finish the game with 33 points. Jerry and Kelli both scored in singled digits in both rounds one and two, and low double digits in round three, but Jerry did slightly worse to end with 26 while Kelli claimed the victory with 23.

We had eleven gamers who still remembered the True Meaning of New Years, which is to stay up past midnight. So a post-midnight reconfig was in order, and back in the Lounge New Eric, Kelli, Ian, Nyck, Kory, and Tom ordered up a game of Rise of Augustus.

Kory got the most in bonuses and in ? card scoring, and did fairly well in regular cards as well to end up with almost double his nearest competitor with 61 total points.

Tom and Ian each scored big with regular cards to finish at 31, while Kelli scored even bigger but without any bonuses to end up at 30. Nyck and New Eric rounded out the crew with 23 and 14 points, respectively.

Meanwhile, out in the front room, Andy, Tim, Alan, Lynette, and Jerry played Istanbul on Table One.

We used a random layout, which I think I prefer now that I've played a few times, as it requires you to develop a new strategy each time. The down side is that you have to play at least semi-defensively in Istanbul - you can't let one person work an effective cycle of merchants by himself, or he's going to run away with the game. That's not really intuitive, so playing this way really benefits experienced players. (Of course, the standard layouts are still new for brand new players, so whatever.)

As you can see, the two Gem merchants were in the upper left, while the Wainwright is clear across the board in the lower right. This meant that the Sultan and Mosques were going to be hard to use, at least after the first couple times, as getting lots of goods will mean spending a lot of turns very far away from where you need to be to get gems.

Tim went first and was able to get both the two cost red and green Mosque tiles, with the benefit of a 3-4 movement card. That was important, as it not only gave him a quick Ruby but also gave him the infrastructure to work the left side of the board without ever visiting the Wainwright. The Green Mosque tile let him get a full set of goods to visit the Sultan for his second Ruby, and then he just went back and forth between the Red Mosque-aided Tea House, the Police Station, and the Gem dealer to grab three quick Rubies for an easy victory.

In fact, only Andy had three Rubies at the end of the game; the others all had two. Most of them worked the wainwright to get the Ruby there and to build up their wheelbarrow, but with the left side so efficient there wasn't really time for that strategy to work. To get the money for the wainwright they had to collect goods from the Post Office or Yellow Warehouse and then visit one of the Merchants - so it took several three move cycles to get all three extra wheelbarrow tiles, while Tim was basically buying a Ruby every three or four turns on the other side of the board. Oh, well.
