I have no idea why, but for some reason this game just didn't click for me. I think it's well-designed, and I think I understand why people like it. But for some reason I just couldn't get into it. I ended up trading it away.

Another game (by the same guy). Again, not really sure what the problem was, though I suspect I wasn't understanding this one very well. Ah well! Traded this too!

One of my good gaming buddies explained the rules to me, and they went in one ear and out the other. It just sounded like pushing cubes. Usually I *love* pushing cubes, I'm a total Eurosnoot. But the game play sounded completely unrelated to the theme, the board was drab, and honestly I would have fallen asleep if I'd tried to play it, so I excused myself. A further interview with my buddy suggests that it's a strategically interesting game, which is exactly what I look for, and still I don't care!

I have to admit that I've played it only once, in 4 players.
My friends say that it's a good 2p game, and plays quickly.
In 4, with 2 new players, it lasted 3 hours.
On top of that, I see that it is strategic in 4, as all tiles will come out eventually, but just tactic in 2, as you don't know which tiles will come out.
And I see it as a heartless and themeless euro. A feelings that I often have while playing Feld's games.

This is the one for me. Luckily, I didn't buy it - one of my gaming friends did. The entire time we were first playing it I kept thinking "Why is this ranked so high??"

Oh well.

Of course I wrote a negative review on the game - and was summarily called (or implicated as being)and idiot, someone who doesn't like deep games, and someone who just doesn't "get it" - despite enjoying games like Eclipse, Puerto Rico, Stone Age, Power Grid, etc.

I get it - I just don't like it.

I love CDGs. This one has all kinds of new wrinkles to add to the genre.

I hate it.

I will proclaim to my dying day, that in this far more than other CDGs I enjoy, the cards you are dealt determine your fate, far, far more than how you choose to play the cards you are dealt.

Other CDGs can allow you to "hide" the discard, enemy-helping, cards you have. You can't hide 3 opponent events and 3 scoring cards.

This one exemplifies the purely cooperative game where the group solves the common puzzle. Not a fan of this type of game in general except for maybe solo play (Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island). Need to have some hidden information or a traitor to make this type of game interesting to me.

Like most people on this list it seems, I'm making a big distinction between "games people think are amazing that I just don't find to be good games anyway" (Empire of the Sun, Kingmaker), and games that really are great that I just don't happened to prefer.

And BKN is definitely in the latter category. I should really enjoy this game and have no idea why I don't. I'd happily recommend it to any serious wargamer wanting ideas for new games. A lot of games have fresh/exhausted troops mechanics but this game handles that better than most. A lot of games have variable turn lengths but this one handles that better than most. And it's a pretty good abstraction of the effects of Allied airpower in the battle as well.

For me, this is the one. A bunch of reasons but here are the highlights:

Modeling a three dimensional battlefield on a 2 dimensional map.
Line of sight rules and checks.
God's eye.
20 to-hit modifiers.
Another 20 to-kill modifiers.
Two minutes of real time takes 30 minutes of game time.
A bazillion fiddly rules
Stacks o' counters 5-10 deep.

I shudder to include this as a 'great game', such was the complete absence of either fun or interesting choices under its lid. What made it even worse was the promise shouted out by the box cover and great production values. Surely a game as lauded as this, that looks like this would be amazing! Truly the driest, least interesting, most scripted embarrassment to the words "special abilities" ever to exist. Fiddly, forgettable and misleading in its presentation. I just cannot see what people like about it.

Too much left to dice rolls.

No coherent rule set to be found anywhere.
Resources that have no meaning.
3 or 4 evolution cards that completely break the game.
Hidden objectives and hidden game end conditions are just outright dumb.

No thank you.

Give me a game that 'goes somewhere', build an engine, a civilization, a train route...SOMETHING....not a game where each turn is just a single turn unto itself.

Ugh.

This may be too new to earn the title of "great game", but it seems like I'm the only one who doesn't think Splendor is the bee's knees.

Gameplay: Get a few gem chips to buy a gem card so you don't need as many gem chips to buy the next slightly more expensive gem card so that you can afford the expensive gem card that is worth points. Maybe if the art was better or if the theme actually came through at all, but I just can't get myself to care.

To be fair, I do like Machi Koro, so maybe if Splendor had dice...

"The symbols Duke, the symbols!" "I am symbol blind kid." I guess I should have liked this game but I just cannot get over the symbols. It was nearly impossible for me to plan any turns out because I was constanly searching for the meaning of the symbols. Additionally, I played with experienced players who were playing cards and saying things like "now all I need is X card and Y card and I win" the whole time I am like what dose circle do again, is that the jump button. After three back to back plays, I can say this is the only game I walked away from saying, "I will never play this again."
