Here we go, I new year!
I new Start!

Let's see if I can do it.

Remember there is one rule that people forget from the beginning. There is a sentence bellow. Give some press to your group's favorite. So, I'll give a few more guide lines. Rank higher then 500. Played by at least 10 other people in the past month and let's add that to contributor has played it in the previous move.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

One thing I dislike about some people's monthly lists, is after a while they stop explaining their reasoning behind them. So, if you've read mine before (or you don't care) you can skip on to the list now. But, here's the full why:

IMHO, some games are good because others say they are good. And so get more play; "all these people are playing this game, let's play it". While other good games sit around with little notice because they aren't being talked about. So, a few years ago I decided to start looking at those games that are getting played a lot that AREN'T part of the top 200. You may ask why top 200 and not 100? Or for that matter 300? 'Because'. Although, I suppose if I was motivated, I'd really switch it to 500.

IMO, if a lot of different people are playing a game, it must have some value to someone somewhere. That's not to say that the Top 200 AREN'T good games or there aren't games out there that are good that aren't getting any play. I'm just trying to show some games out there that different people are playing 'because they are fun' and not just because they have the best press. Over the past couple months, I've gotten a couple comments about 'well these are on BSW (or what not)'. To that I have to say "ah but you have heard of [them].." Again, I'm not saying there aren't MORE good games out there.

I've also had a suggestion about adding weight to longer games. A complaint is that these are short (filler) games because people are more likely to play shorter games. Well, isn't that the point? Showing some games that people in your group might be willing to play. Plus, I'm doing it on number of users playing it, not number of times. IMHO The length of a game does not measure enjoyment. For my gaming tastes I get more enjoyment playing 3-6 different games in the same time the other table is playing one game of TI3.

Obviously, expansions skew this. It's just going by how they were logged. So, if someone logged Niagara while others logged the game under spirits, it's just got Niagara.

So, here's some 'good' press for games that may not be showing up on 'top lists'.

I'm allowing additions, but let's keep it to those games that are good (to your group), get played a lot on BGG (you decide), but aren't ranked in the Top 500.

My HM are games that look interesting that just stay under these 10 or that I've played recently and are just outside the top 10. I've also added a Top500 HM and Top1000 HM. The most played (by different users, not number of times) that is ranked higher then 500 and 1000 and not on this list already.

I had had a couple lists by weight, but since this is 100 eye balling manual through the game stats page, I've dropped those.

I must say each month I had gone ahead and picked up a few games off of this list and for the most part have been VERY pleased. Most people in the group are buying the top games and I've been adding to the game library by adding these gems. The lone exception really was Poison. I some how thought there would be more to that game then counting to 13.

Simple concept, and works real well. My kind of game: clever, fast, simple, fun. Very easy to play. Lovely. Not much strategic depth, I think, but some decision-making anyway.

The expansion is pretty much mandatory.

Plays fast making it a perfect filler. Over hyped. Improved by the expansion.

Guantanamo

I have to say I really wanted to try this based on what everyone was saying about it.

But, I just don't get it. It's a very simple roll dice, get/give money, buy cards.

While I have a admit there is some decisions, they seem fairly obvious when they come up.

I'll play it, but it's now off my to buy list.

With two players, I'd only ever play the advanced variant. It does use a dummy player, but in a very smooth way (much smoother than 7 Wonders for example).

Overall, it is a simpler game than other card drafters, but it makes up for it in cuteness some (sounds odd coming from me). Would also be more palatable for families. If you're a fan of card drafting games, I'd snag it.

I love simple games, they have their place. This one, however, is not one of them.

It's really too simple pick a card and pass, after the first couple cards of a round, there is no choice. There isn't enough variation in what your choices 'mean'

Takes King of Tokyo and adds more strategy and choices pushing it to the medium end of a light game. Still, if you like the former and want more, you'll probably want to pick this one up to take your monster bash to the next level.

Very similar to King of Tokyo, but better. I like the new stuff that has replaced the boring numbers on the dice, and the building/army system is quite neat. Well done.

The Cure is to Pandemic as Ra: Dice is to Ra. A prefect re-implementation with enough difference to make it stand out on it's own. The Cure manages to create a totally vibe thanks to the unpredictability of the dice and I think that's awesome.

Superb production values on this one to boot.

This is pretty much a perfect gateway game or one to break out with families. Very simple rules, quick play time, and lots of wackiness to keep it fun. You'd be amazed how quickly your "sure thing" bet goes bust.

Also, it's a beautiful presentation. Sure to please the folks sitting around the table.

I love it.

Better than I expected, I guess. The game is really chaotic, but that's fine. The betting is pleasantly uncertain, when everything can change very quickly. A neat design, and good for larger groups.

Indifferent.

This little card game was most surprising in how clever it was and how much of a challenge it was to play. The concept feels fresh and unique. It's a filler I'm looking forward to playing a lot in the coming year.

In short - on your turn you have to make sure you're winning. To do that, you add to your tableau, or change the current rule for what constitutes a win. Ties become crucial, so number and color order matter a lot.

Highly recommended - arguably the best new card game of 2014!

A fun bluffing, negotiation game that doesn't feel like that at all. Try to cheat your way over the border. And with the tin suitcases this is a game I must own (and do own strangely enough)

Production -> 4 stars

(all out of 4)

A little downtime while others are negotiating a bribe, but that is usually amusing.

Pretty much a silly game about smuggling contraband out of Mexico. How is it that this game doesn't make those lists of "controversial" games? I don't know but man it's hillarious IF you play with a crowd who are playing in the spirit of the game. I love this one. I never turn down a chance to play it. Now that I own a copy I am so excited!!!

Zalasta
Rated = 5

A light-hearted bluffing game that really shouldn't be taken seriously. Unfortunately, it could get quite frustrating if others keep targeting you for inspection, especially if you're behind, since in order to catch up you have to be able to smuggle more than everyone else. I see the humor, but I didn't really enjoy the gameplay. There is almost an underlying mean-spirited feel to the whole experience, once is enough for me.

A passable, reasonably chaotic filler (though running slightly long for what it is, at about 45 mins with 5 players). Distinguished largely for the 3d train about which you move your cowboy meeples - tricky if, like me, you have fat fingers. Incorporates an element of programmed movement, a little like Roborally, with the same element of getting your enjoyment from seeing somebody's plans go up in smoke when something moves their piece to somewhere they weren't expecting to be.

An arty, co-operative, social take on Cluedo.

The end-game switch from everyone getting an individual dream to identify villains to everyone getting a shared dream to identify a specific villain seems a bit odd, but I guess dreams are weird that way.

Decent number of interesting things going on, but it didn't especially grab me. The mechanics in general work together well for the most part. It can potentially be extremely swingy at the end with a few dollars determining a 40-point difference against another player.

Be forewarned the market cards are extremely hard to see clearly with the brown background, so be careful to ensure you know what peppers you're getting.

Also note that there SHOULD be an auction in the first starting round of the game as long as players feel they understand the game well enough to know what they're bidding on. (The designer agrees with this.)

Alright so the buzz has arrived. I got my copy of this from CSI for 40 bucks. Neat game. Kind of a basic worker placement game with an item or two that makes it interesting. I like this one and plan on seeing it played a good bit.

However it's awful at 2 players. With the game end trigger coming at 20 points there is no reason to ever skip the turn order option of "take 1 VP." I know people will argue with me on this but really I've proven it. Even in my head I can rationalize how other options should be better at certain times but honestly if it's left for you...TAKE it. This means your opponent then must take it on their, leaving you the first player position. All in all the turn order sequence loses so much of it's luster and it's one of the coolest parts of the game.

Single play, 6 new players. Things took a while to get going, then we rushed to a conclusion in a few rounds. It looks great, but I can't help feeling more effort was spent on design than on tuning gameplay - spring & winter cards seemed very swingy.

Super abstract! Quick and fun to play. Don't rules lawyer the thing, sheesh. Resolve all abilities in yer favor, no problems.

Lost! by 3, was about to complete 2nd set next turn, and massive earnings, had 5 ability cards (yes, 5, not 3), with a big win well over 10+ points... the end game snuck up on me (us). Lost, holly carp. It was worse even than this report speaks to; I can't go on.

Raising rating from '7' to '8'.

[Update Feb 1:] Nah, lowered from 8 to 7. The bits are such sh*t it's amazing. My red card holder no longer can fit the cards, so I have to manually force in every A card (the center slot is the worst). The stupid small score board is an affront - 2 people have the same score? trouble; 3+ people? the f*g explorers fall off the table! Grrrrrrr. Now that we've taken it out of the regular rotation, maybe I won't miss it as much as I imagined I would? Oh, and don't even get me started on the small box which I have to jig-rig every time we play to fit everything back in. I can't even fit a tiny plano box in there with the 5 goods cubes (which for all intents and purposes are 5 of the same f*g color). The more I think about it the more I realize how much this production is an affront - not worth the money.
