This is a list of games actually played at Unique Gifts & Games in Graylake, IL or the Round Lake Area Public Library. The primary purpose of the list is to collect information about the game as played by the attendees though anyone can participate in the discussion. These could be in the form of observations or questions. The information may prove valuable to maintain interest in the game or to identify mistakes in game play.

Questions regarding rules, tips, tactics, or strategy as well as providing advice on the same are welcome. Comments on individual players should not be part of the discussion though providing details on how specific play styles may impact game play is ok. This is not a forum for airing dirty laundry.

Played 2/5/15

Two player game, Simon (German) vs. Eric (US). We played the first training scenario that offers a good overview of the core game mechanisms, minus heavy units. This scenario pits the US and German armies against each other in a 6-turn race to retrieve the top-secret documents from the body of a spy. The game ended in a close win for the US player, who succeeded in not only destroying the German's Sd.Kfz halftrack, but was also able to drive over and kill the German unit that held the plans for most of the game using his M3. Brutal, and great fun!

Looking forward to playing this at the library with a longer game and more people, as one of the draws of this system are its army-building and custom scenario capabilities.

Posting on behalf of Train John:

Brian K. brought Imperial 2030 (2009) to UGG on 2/5. It was played by 6 and we started at around 7.15 PM.
Steve Stigler won but the margin from 1st to last was only around 20VPs.

My take is that it is a game played with naval and land power based on a modern world view. Russia, China, India, Brazil, USA, and Europe are the superpowers.

The heart of the game is a "rondel" turn system. Simple to learn but complex in its' choices. Also central to the game are the stock/bonds players buy to represent their level of control of a major country. Control of a power can and will flip. You are not "Brazil" but an investor temporarily making decisions for them because you have the most invested in them.

Played the game with 5 people. As with previous sessions, it took awhile for people to get used to a Euro-style game with the potential for a lot of interaction. Direct conflict fits the theme of the game though many people minimize this conflict. Basically, the game uses worker placement mechanics with resource management. Unlike most worker placement games, a player can dominate access to activities through brute force tactics. This may turn off Euro purists.

Anyway as with previous sessions, the people who stayed out of direct conflict the most did better than the rest. Only additional sessions can validate that this will always be the case. I hope that it won't as I like the conflict.
