Previous Session Reports

It was February 20, 2015, an otherwise miserable and pointless day, that suddenly became awesome when nineteen gamers crashed headlong into the Official CBBS Gaming Basement and held a Game Night. Most of them wore pants. Tim, Jerry, Jeff, Kyle, Kelli, Benjamin, Eric, Eric, Eric, Eric, Tom, Tom, Ian, Andy, Shawn, Elden, Suzie, Kory, and Eryn, were all somehow involved.

Because you have all been such bad little boys and girls, I shall give you but one Ricochet Robots puzzle this time around. Also, it's really hard.

Tim, Jerry, Jeff, Kyle, Kelli, Tom, Benjamin, and three separate and distinct Erics all earned at least one chip this time around. For all the good it will do them.

It was an extremely close game, as Andy scored 86 spyriums, while Kelli earned 70 spyriums, Jeff accumulated 57 spyriums, Eric finished with 46 spyriums, and Ian glommed onto 42 spyriums.

On Table One, Tim, Jerry, Shawn, and Tom played a fully sanctioned and appropriate game of Deus, one of them new hot games and so forth.

The tricky part about Deus is that while you are often doing interesting things that give you resources or let you draw cards or do other constructive things, the number of ways you can actually score points is somewhat limited. You get points from surrounding Barbarians, from building temples, by having resources majorities at the end, and by using point scoring buildings. But as with any game of this type, you won't be able to do some of the things you theoretically could do - if you never draw any production buildings you are never going to make a lot of resources, that kind of thing. And, if you never draw any military cards you won't get those Barbarian points, and if you never get a point scoring building or a temple, those scoring avenues are similarly blocked.

In this game, Jerry only found one production building all game long, but he was able to get some point scoring cards. Meanwhile, Shawn had lots of military and cards and was able to get tons of Barbarian points. Tim got a bunch of cards early that gave him extra resources, buildings, and cards for regions that had multiple buildings, so he spent all game building vertically - which meant he didn't get many Barbarian points but could max out both of his Temples that also scored for regions with multiple buildings.

So, we all had weaknesses while we all had strengths. Jerry was scoring all game long, Tim had tons of cards and resources, and Shawn had good board position and was able to close out and poach Barbarian points from the others by moving his armies.

The end game was pleasantly opaque, and nobody was sure about who was winning. Tim's last few production buildings let him score the majority points for all four resources, while Jerry edged Shawn for the money majority. And when the smoke cleared, Tim and Jerry had tied with 45 points in almost completely different ways, while Shawn was just behind with 43. Tom only got one Temple and never really got an engine going, ending up with 26 points.

Shawn worked out a way that he might have been able to take both the money majority from Jerry and the Wheat majority from Tim, at the cost of his actual two point final move, which would have given him the victory. But, of course, it is unlikely any of us played completely optimally all the way through - with so many cards of so many types, Deus may not be extremely deep but it is broad enough to stand up to a fair number of plays.

It was now time for a general reconfig, so a very small number of players changed tables while everybody else eschewed the company of strangers in favor of parking their butts right where they were. Elden joined butt-parkers Tom, Jerry, Shawn, and Tim on Table One for a righteous game of Peloponnes.

Peloponnes is a civ-building game that seems smaller than it really is - maybe it's the lack of a map and the limited number of turns (nine, in the expanded game). At any rate, you auction off tiles, collect resources, deal with disasters, and try to score points. The latter is an interesting puzzle, as your score is the lower of your building/land/money points and your people points. So, you have to increase your population at roughly the same pace you build up the stuff of your civilization, although the timing of the auctions and disasters sometimes don't let you do the things you need to do.

In this game, we didn't go into Decline until the very end, so everybody had lots of Luxury goods all game. As it turns out, while Tim's rules are rather explicit about how limited Luxury goods are and when you can trade them in (at 2:1) for missing resources, the FAQ is a lot more forgiving - basically, you are supposed to be able to use Luxury Goods any time you want a resource but don't have it. This includes, crucially, trading in for money during the auctions, as well as for resources to build or pay for disasters or food to feed. We didn't allow the trading for auctions, which probably would have completely changed the whole game - although, like I said, most of us had Luxury Goods until the end, so maybe it all would have washed out anyway.

Tim focused all game on getting building and lands that gave him food; that, along with a building making him immune to the Plague (which came up late), allowed him to keep a population of 7 at the end - the biggest problem came when the B and C Supply phases came up on consecutive turns, and nobody really had the food stockpiles to weather that very well. But what's the ancient world without a Famine here and there?

Anyway, while Jerry had a population of eight at the end, Tim had managed to stockpile just enough money to buy the critically powerful Colossus phase D tile from the Hellas expansion, which not only gives 10 prestige (building/land/money) points, but also increases your population score from three per person to four. Therefore, Tim finished with 28 points, while Jerry only got 24. Because of the Famine and late Plague, all the players were limited by their population points; Shawn ended up with 21 when he didn't have enough money to outbid Tim for the Colossus (and Tim went ahead of him in turn order, essentially randomly), while Elden and Tom finished with 15 each.

This is a fun and relatively quick game that we should play more often, and not merely because the rulebook (with the expansions) is kind of a nightmare to wade through when you haven't played in a while. Ima bring it to Expofestoramapaloozacon this weekend.

Kelli and Jeff weren't much for a long reconfig, so they slunk off to the lounge to play a couple two-player games of Can't Stop.

First Kelli took the 11 column! Then Jeff captured the 10 column. You could feel the tension when Kelli raced to the top of the 4 column! Then she got the 12 and won! Hooray!

In Game Two, Kelli grabbed the 7, which always makes things harder for everybody. Jeff then managed to poach the 12 from Kelli - and a good thing, too, because Kelli turned around and poached Jeff's 2. And when Kelli shot to the top of the eleven column, her second victory in a row was assured.

The second full reconfig of the evening found Tim, New Eric, Jerry, Tom, and Elden at Table One, ready to play Istanbul.

This was Tim's game almost from the beginning, although Tom actually got the first Ruby. But Tim used an initial 5 coin card to expand his wheelbarrow on the first turn, then wandered across the board, filling it up at warehouses and the Black Market, to get both the Red and Green Mosque tiles for his first gem. One stop at the Black Market later, and he had enough goods to visit the Sultan for his second. He did that circuit again for his third, and then pivoted to selling goods at the Large Market to get the money to buy his final two Rubies at the Gem Merchant. The way the merchants were laid out, it was relatively easy to stockpile goods and then choose how to convert them into Rubies, based on where everybody else was and the shape of the two Ruby-based tiles. An interesting effect of this was that the Post Office, a perennial favorite, was not all that efficient this time around - Tim's early visits to the Sultan had made trading for Rubies much more expensive, so getting resources in ones wasn't really enough anymore.

New Eric spent the game on the right side of the board, turning goods into cash and buying from the Gem Merchant - that was good enough to get him to four Rubies at the end. Tom used the Sultan late to get to three, while Elden and Jerry wound up with two.

Kyle (Chaubei) bought the most things and painted the rice paddies first. Kelli (Sasayakko) painted the ocean and mountains first, tied with Kyle for most encounters, visited the most hot springs, and ate the most expensive meals. Jeff (Hirotada) apparently didn't do anything all that interesting on his way to 97 points, but that was almost enough to catch Kelli and the 99 points she earned from all that high-livin'. Kyle earned 87 points.

After some shufflin' and punchin' and packin' and shuckin' and jivin', we had eight gamers left for a standard late nite game of Shadow Hunters. Those eight players included, and were limited to, New Eric, Tim, Kory, Andy, Jeff, Tom, Eryn, and Jerry. Ian and Shawn decided they were too afraid to play and were killed off before the box was opened.

Jeff was Charles, and since Charles wants lots of people to die, he was not shy about attacking everybody. When he got ahold of the machine gun, it was like a dream come true, and, sure enough, Tom's Agnes was the first to die, riddled with bullets.

At this point Andy picked up the Curséd Sword and started a-hackin, killing off New Eric's Emi, who makes up for her weak power by having few hit points. This clarified the teams (Andy, Eryn, and Tim were Shadows, while Jerry and Kory were the remaining Hunters), which allowed Kory to begin the most annoying round this game has ever seen. He revealed as Fu-Ka and set Tim's HP to 7, and then moved to the Weird Woods and hit Tim for two more, effectively doing nine points of damage in a single turn. Then Jeff also hit Tim with the Weird Woods, and Jerry drew the Bloodthirsty Spiders to kill him off - Tim had lost all thirteen hit points before he could take a single turn (and since he was the Vampire, he probably could have healed some). Gah!

However, Jerry had landed on the Underworld Gate, which allowed Andy to reveal as the Ultra Soul and hit him with his Murder Ray. Andy then polished Jerry off with his sword, and it was just Kory vs. both Andy and Eryn, with Jeff just trying to kill anybody for his victory condition to kick in.

Sadly for Jeff, Andy soon was forced to stab him to death - at which point, Kory began one of the most unlikely comebacks of all time. First, he desperately went to the Church and found exactly what he was looking for - the thingamajig that completely heals any revealed Hunter. Then he Weird Woods-ed Eryn to death and stole the Spear of Destiny from Andy. He was loaded for bear, but was stuck on the Underworld Gate and Andy's Murder Ray slash Curséd Sword combo almost finished him off. But Andy could only get him down to one hit point left, and when Kory tracked Andy down and stabbed him for his final four points, the Hunters had prevailed.

Not that Tim is bitter or anything, but that blew.

Eventually, Jeff was the first to get all his fellers in, followed quickly by Jerry. Tim and Tom had made up some ground, but Jerry insisted on drawing sixty-eleven billion red cards every turn, so it was just a matter of time before he and Andy won. Dog Royal sucks!

One might wonder if one could trust peppermint cookies in late February, but apparently none of those ones were at this Game Night because those were the first to go. The Fig Newmans, the Cookie Thins, the Spice Drops, the Beef Jerky (of course), the Cheezit-Grooves, the Chocolate Pretzels, and the M&Ms were similarly all completely consumed. But the Kettle Chips and the Spicy Sweet Doritos, the nut mix, the Almond Swedish thins (the brown things on the left), and the Sugar Free Chocolate Wafer cookies were not so lucky. That's just the way it is - some snacks win, and some lose. It's the cycle of life.

Since I never drink any of these, I basically get them on the basis of getting a good mixture of colors and also whatever unusual flavors strikes my fancy. Also, I just like the word "Sarsaparilla".
