I was taught Acquire by the son of friends of my parents when I was 12; it was the game that convinced me that games aren't just for kids, and remains a favorite.

A very cool and terrible game. It's won or lost by the roll of a single die. But still a remarkable game for its time. Quite revolutionary. But decades later I discovered euros, and blimey that was wonderful.

So this is the game that got me back into the hobby, my first euro:

Caylus

I had previously played some Catan with my family, but nothing more "serious" than that. While taking some classes at the university I, for some reason, came to think about board gaming in general - and that it had to be more to it than "just" Catan.
As it was Catan that I was familiar with - I searched for something with the same feel. I stumbled across Archipelago and watched the Rahdo runs through video of it. Not having seen a rahdo video before and not knowing about BGG I bought the game (rahdo has indeed had that effect more than once).
It was a success.
After that I joined BGG and have been roaming through these sites since - expanding my collection.
Fresh in the game, planning on staying.

My oldest brother and father would play this game and I got hooked watching and learning. Ended up getting my own copy and still have it, and occasionally still play it, to this day!

Having never played anything more complicated than Risk, this game absolutely blew my mind. Everything fit so perfectly thematically, and the tension, the paranoia... I never knew a board game could evoke such emotion.

I went out and got a copy the next week, and that was the start of a very slippery slope...

In my pre-teens, discovered this in my brother-in-law's stuff, when he was staying at our house. He was enlisted in the army at the time. Through this game I discovered that there were other things out there besides Monopoly and Chess. And so the quest to acquire most of the The Avalon Hill Game Co catalog begins.

Hmm.

Depends on when my gaming started.

When I was early teens I had a small collection - not that I realised then what I realise now about how wonderful these games where and consisted ofThe Fury of Dracula, Statis Pro Baseball, Statis Pro Football, Talisman and Dark Future, which were played often.

However, actually a touch after that was when I bought almost on release Blood Bowl first edition (with my first pay from my first part time job) which I have played in it's various formats for the last 30 years. And still largely suck at it. And love it to pieces.

There were many many non-gaming years in between due to no-one to play with, until I found a gaming club in a new city when I wanted to meet local people. There was no one game there so I will put the first gane I played there which was Chaos in the Old World.

After a long dry spell where I quit gaming altogether, this one sucked me back in, this time into Euros. And I share the first name of the designer? Hmm, must check it out. A couple years later, I'm close to maxing out the customer rewards program over at CoolStuffInc. Anything to get that free shipping, right?

These days Catan is unplayed, but sort of semi-revived by my discovery of Rivals for Catan, which is popular enough with mostly non-gamer friends that it actually sees table time on a weekly basis. And I'm finding I like it better than the original.

My first "real" board game (i.e., non-monopoly or non-clue) experience was Settlers. That got me interested, but Dominion was the one that tipped me over. I have to appreciate my friends for introducing me to this hobby, as most everything has been a positive experience for me. Perhaps the only negative part is that I now have couple thousands less in my bank

During high school, I moved from wargames into roleplaying games. Starting with the favorite that has such a nefarious reputation amongst the non-gaming public. But quickly to include gems like Traveller (Classic), Middle-earth Role Playing (1st & 2nd Editions), Call of Cthulhu (2nd - 6th Edition), and a host of others. These days forays into RPG are limited to Fudge or Dogs in the Vineyard or The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen

I bought "Panzer Blitz" during high school at a small drugstore in a town out in the middle of nowhere with a population of about 3,000 (still can't believe they had it). I instantly fell in love with it and played it primarily with a cousin. Up until then, we thought Battleship was about as complicated as a game could get (we were incredible excited to get Battleship, but totally disappointed in it).

BTW, still have that same "Panzer Blitz" game sitting on my gaming shelf after many, many moves and almost 40 years.

Although I became familiar with Settlers well before Shadows, I didn't become aware of the vast world of boardgame choices until I met a professor at Cornerstone University in Michigan who invited me to join him and others for a game of Shadows over Camelot. (I've played boardgames all my life but up to this point had mostly played the standard American board and card game fare as well as Settlers). During play of this game, he told me about BGG and the rest is history...and I went a bit bonkers buying and trying almost everything.

I no longer own this game as there was a game of this played a couple years later that almost destroyed friendships.

It is pretty hard for me to be sure. I had played a lot of standard American board games by Parker Bros. and Milton Bradley, the most memorable being Landslide, Billionnaire, Dealer's Choice, and Masterpiece.

I think War at Sea was the first wargame I played that I can remember when I was 11. It was followed closely by Nuclear War (the card game) and Russian Campaign. There were some others such as D-Day, Blitzkreig, Battle of the Bulge, and Afrika Corps that were a bit less memorable. Alexander the Great, too. Then came Wooden Ships and Iron Men as well as Kingmaker, but those felt like wargames too.

I also remember playtesting Dungeon! with David Megarry at TSR before it was released circa 1975. Then Rail Baron came out in 1977 and it harkened back to the games by Parker Bros. and Milton Bradley but had more complexity. I loved multi-player games much more that PvP wargames. I was hooked. Then Dune, Circus Maximus, Titan, Source of the Nile, SPI War of the Ring and Spies. And finally, AH Civilization.
