Since last year was our first time attending IndyCon, this year was the first year we knew what we had to look forward to!

Thanks to Adam, Dave, Tami, and Krista for all your hard work putting the con together every year. It was fun to help out with a few more things this year.

The raffle prizes this year were unreal. Thank you so much to our very generous sponsors, including CoolStuffInc, The Game Preserve, Days of Wonder, Tasty Minstrel Games, Miniature Market, Plaid Hat Games, and so many more.

Sadly I had to miss out on the Friday morning festivities. Ben played several games without me -- he does not intend to make his own geeklist but I have this urge to document them anyway, so I'll note what else he played throughout the list. His morning consisted of Coal Baron, Sheriff of Nottingham, Machi Koro with the new expansion, and Samurai Spirit (which I had been hoping to play, darn it!).

I arrived with a sandwich around 1:30, determined to make up for lost time. Right on schedule I taught Concordia to Jeff B, David B, and Ken. These guys were so sharp, it was like I was teaching them tic tac toe. Made my job pretty darn easy.

Compared to previous games of Concordia I've played, this time I tried to have more synergy between what I did on the board and the cards I was holding (since the points you score at the end of the game come from a combination of the two). Ken had colonies all over the board. David made it to a couple cloth cities before I was able to build there, so it was crazy expensive (did it anyway since I had something pertaining to cloth cities). The goals I was working on throughout the game were food cities, cloth cities, and being in as many provinces as possible.

Jeff B 127
Christy 126
Ken 116
David 112

While I played Concordia, Ben participated in the Ticket to Ride tournament. (He asked me for strategy advice and frowned when I responded.) Thanks to Days of Wonder for sponsoring it!

ALSO: I just saw a teaser on Facebook for a BoardGameArena implementation of Concordia!! Pretty exciting!

Ben asked to play Summoner Wars with me after Concordia. Whenever we play SW together at a game day or convention, people come by and give us tons of crap. Ben was Hogar, the Tundra Guild summoner from the new Alliances set. I felt like playing something I already knew, so I went with Krusk (Sand Goblins) from the Master Set.

Most of the details of this game have already vanished from my brain. I do remember that Silts played a pretty big role, and Ben played some kind of special ability negation on him. I built pretty much all of my events and used the magic for lots of sandstorming. The endgame came down to a one-on-one summoner/summoner shootout (Krusk was victorious).

After our SW match, Ben taught BattleCON: Devastation to Dave D and Denise. They were playing with Shekhtur and Eligor. (Huge shoutout to Julia for finding our Shekhtur standee and figuring out it was ours! Thank you!!) While they played, I ran the front desk for a couple hours. Gave folks badges, explained play-to-win and gave out cards, etc.

Then it was time for the Tichu tournament! We had never played before, and there are these really weird cards (dragon, phoenix, dog) that I could NEVER figure out what to do with. One is powerful and can win tricks but it's -25, and another is similarly powerful and worth +25 but you have to give the trick you won to the other team. At first Ben and I were winning against Andy and Barry, but ultimately lost as they actually knew what they were doing. Thanks for playing with us, guys!

After that we went home to get some rest for Saturday. Sorry Hahn.

I know, another SW match. Again suggested by Ben. This one was circumstantial because we were waiting for some folks to finish other games. So we started a Bolvi (Guild Dwarves) vs. Sunderved (Mountain Vargath) match.

Partway through the game an awful feeling hit me. "We've already played this one," I said to Ben. We keep a household spreadsheet and there are so many blank cells that we try to never repeat a match. This is a first for us -- the first time we played an "invalid" game that we can't record. That actually really bothers me, to be honest.

There was a lot of back-and-forth in this off-the-grid game. Quen took out an assault tower, and then Ben added some upgrade to a different tower and used it to one-shot Quen. Growden chewed through a bunch of Ben's walls. At one point I thought Bolvi had the upper hand, but somehow Sunderved ended up winning. Here's a shot of the middle of the board, full of units and walls:

Adam needed a couple more people to play in the tournament, so he sweet-talked Anna and me into it. We played that morning when she was done with Endeavor. What did I learn? Crokinole is fun, but it HURTS. Once I was behind 16-0 (playing to 20), I conceded and went on to Dead of Winter! Thanks for a fun (if short-lived) game, Anna!

IndyCon 2015 wouldn't have been complete without a game of Dead of Winter. Contrary to what everyone has been saying, I was NOT a betrayer OR a cylon. We had no betrayer, and the group managed to come up with the required amount of medicine in the Find a Cure scenario. I did nothing to help because I was still working on my secret objective, which required 3 fuel.

I had 2 fuel and my business guy was using his special ability at the gas station, but all he could find was outsiders and medicine. I took the medicine for the group goal but had to hoard it. Really I should have thrown down some noise tokens. That might have won me the game along with 2 other winners, Carl and Ben. Brian C lost because he helped the group too much (his secret objective required medicine), and Scott lost as well. So two wins, three losses for our group.

Carl later won Dead of Winter in the raffle! Thank you to Plaid Hat and our other sponsors!

After DoW, Ben and I played Eat Lunch at a nearby mall food court.

Ben picked up Evolution from the play-to-win table, Phil offered to teach, and then we recruited Todd. I had watched a Ryan Metzler video and it was on my want-to-play list. Saw lots of folks playing it during the con. Phil was the fearless leader of our group; he even had an Evolution t-shirt and took photos of the outcome of the game so he could deliver a session report. (Then he won it in the raffle, and the Fowlers are so classy that they gave it away to someone else who liked it.)

This is a cool game. You start out with a neutral species with body size 1 and population 1. Your goal is to eat as much food as possible, and to help your species survive and eat, you can add a variety of traits. The traits might be things like "hard shell" or "warning call" (defensive) or "carnivore" (you can attack other species!). You can also discard cards in order to grow your body size or population, OR create a new species.

Ben went super defensive and we had a really hard time attacking him. Todd had a species with "climbing" so it could avoid getting eaten, but then I added "climbing" to one of mine and made it a carnivore, and started attacking Todd's species. But he had "fertile" so he was outbreeding my attacking. Plus his "scavenger" traits got him a ton of extra food. At one point he added a trait that messed up my attacking, and my species starved.

Long before IndyCon I saw Adam tweet Scoville as a play-to-win game. Having played with Patrick and Julia, I added it to the planning geeklist in an attempt to find some other players. But the play-to-win copy was getting played a lot and I wasn't sure if I would be able to pull it off at all, let alone get together with the folks who had signed up at the right time. But to my amazement, the stars aligned and I got together with Jerry, Jeff B, and Ben to play. Jerry taught, which was awesome -- thanks!

We had a good time playing Scoville. Jeff seemed to have a really good sense of when he should bid more money on the player turn order. Sometimes the player order thing gets complicated, because what you really need is to go before or after another person when harvesting, so they will get out of your way or so you can beat them to a particular spot. But you can only choose where you put yourself in the order, not necessarily where other people will go. So it gets pretty tricky.

I was tired of never getting any ghost peppers, so I planted some black and white peppers over on one side of the board. Then Jerry and Jeff came over and started farming there. Ben went the other way and completed a recipe with a bunch of browns, since most of the board was deserted. I thought that was a smart move.

Jeff 95
Jerry 86
Christy 75
Ben 63

There were so many people playing Scoville that, as a play-to-win, our odds weren't very good. But somehow I won it!! Thank you Tasty Minstrel Games!!

Right after Scoville, Hahn flagged down Ben and me and recruited us for Pandemic: The Cure. We played with Steve, who is from St. Louis, and Brian M. It took me a surprisingly long time to catch on, for someone who had played Pandemic. A few of the mechanics took a while to sink in, plus I was sitting on the end of the table kind of far away from the action. Other people actually invited me to other games because they didn't realize I was playing, lol.

We lost the first game and played a second game. I really like this dice version! In terms of time limits, being able to manage the bag of dice is much, much better than the whole "hey guys, we just lost because we ran out of cards" thing. And you don't have the "hey I drew Tokyo but we already cured the red disease so this card is now useless" problem either. I also like the luck factor better than the gameyness of knowing which cards are on top of the deck, but Ben disagrees with me and says he likes original Pandemic better. BOO.

During Pandemic: The Cure, the raffle prizes were given out. Our household won a copy of XCOM!! After playing this with Phil and Anna at Adam's, I was so excited to win it. Thank you CoolStuff, Miniature Market, The Game Preserve, and anyone else who could have donated this. We also won a copy of Bioshock Infinite -- Chris says I should move to Texas to further the Plaid Hat fandom. Not taking it quite that far, but thank you Plaid Hat, you know I am a megafan!!

For the second year in a row, we noticed these beautiful wooden card holders by NerdsofNaptown on Etsy. If they hold sleeved cards, we may very well buy some to further bling out Summoner Wars. I put in tickets but given that we were really lucky on other items, I was glad to see them go to Gary.

The raffle is such a fun part of the con because it's awesome to see people get excited and win games. Phil won several, I looked back and he was beaming every time. The guy who won Imperial Assault looked really excited. And way to go Alan, with that sound system! Thank you so much to all of our generous sponsors. The con would be great without any prizes, but the raffle items really put it over the top and we all appreciate it so much.

After the raffle it was time for Ben to play Bora Bora with Dave, Andrew, and Kent. We needed sustenance, so Hahn and I took orders from several people (sorry Phil, I will check with you next year, not kidding!) and went on a Yats run (thanks for coming with me Chris!). This might become an annual tradition, as there are always hungry people at IndyCon. Speaking of hunger, thanks to Tami and the rest of the crew for the availability of all the snacks. We brought lots of our own snacks this year and still bought several items. Another great idea was the hand sanitizer (the Yats made my nose run a little so in addition to kleenex I made a few trips over there).

Phil, Chris, and I talked a little BSG over dinner and then Phil and I played 7 Wonders with Jessica, Anna, Aaron, and Aristides. I never have a clue what to do in this game, as evidenced by the scores. But we had a fun time!

Aristides was excited about a game he saw on the shelves, The Downfall of Pompeii. He told us, "You throw people into volcanoes" and we agreed that that sounded awesome. It lived up to its reputation! (This one was from Dave K's library, so we need to play it sometime!)

There are two phases: in the first phase you position your people in various spots in the city of Pompeii, and in the second phase you place lava tiles, throwing other players' people into the volcano and trying to block their exits. We had a great time and I would love to play this again sometime. Thanks for teaching, Aristides, I'm glad we got to play a couple games together this year!

Ben and I wandered in late Sunday morning. As we were taking our coats off, Dave D said hi to us and showed us this amazing copy of Whacky Wit! It was such a treat to see (and play!!) one of these things in person. The little white pegs go down as you move Whacky around, and the ghosts are hollow so they don't push the pegs down. What an awesome game and unique, nostalgic experience!

Thanks again to Dave D for showing us your copy and letting us play, and to Chris S for taking this great photo!

Patrick suggested Splendor as things were winding down. At one point everybody needed green for the nobles and there were no greens available. Several of us were close to winning when Shane sniped it. Glad we got to play!

Shane - won
Christy, Patrick, Ben (I didn't get final scores)

Here are the games that were on my want-to-play list that didn't get played: Jungle Rumble, K2, Samurai Spirit, new expansion for Concordia, Fields of Arle, Dead of Winter with Phil.

The ends of conventions always make me sad, with people leaving at various times and stuff getting packed up and hauled away. But part of my Sunday consisted of talking about what to play next weekend, so that's the best way to look at it! IndyCon 2015 was a blast!
