Promos, the bane of any collector. They are printed in limited quantities, only given out at conventions, and often run you tons of money if you try to track them down later. But for every card featuring Wil Wheaton, there is a promo that truly adds something to the game.

This GeekList is to feature the best-of-the-best. The promos that are worth the time and effort to track down. Some general qualities these promos usually possess are:
1. They fit seamlessly into the game. This is in terms of both theme and gameplay.
2. They add something fresh and new.
3. Oftentimes, the mark of a truly great promo is that it is included in future releases of the game.

When adding a game to this list, please do a short writeup on why you are adding it. Also add methods for purchasing it, if they are available.

Promo to: Sushi Go!

To start off this list, I am adding what I believe to be the best promo I have ever purchased. Soy Sauce is so good that it is almost a mini-expansion. It adds 4 cards (equal distribution to the Chopsticks) that change the entire collection strategy. All of a sudden, you WANT to be stuck with chopsticks at the end. You get a bonus from playing sashimi that you can't complete. This promo singlehandedly takes away the possibility that your move is a throwaway move.

It can be purchased from the BGG Store when it is in stock. Be sure to check the barcode on the back of your Sushi Go copy though. The card backs are different colors in the -M and -V printings, and you will need to know which one you have so that you can order the correct version of the promo.

Board Game: Ghost Stories: The Guardhouse Expansion

Forget the 5 cards that are added. The guardhouse makes this promo worth it. Ghost Stories is a punishingly hard game, especially when you can't get the tao tokens you need to defeat the 3-strength and 4-strength enemies. The Guardhouse has your back, becoming one of the most useful village tiles in the game. I never play without this anymore.

This promo can be downloaded from the Repos website. Since they provided a blank tile with the base game, it can be laser printed and glued onto the extra piece for a virtually indistinguishable tile.

These were a bonus with the first printing of Eminent Domain, but to me they're an essential part of the game. The Utopia planets give you flexibility when it comes to researching higher level technologies (not to mention a wild resource slot and a boost symbol!), the tradeoff being that they're worth fewer points and are tougher to settle/conquer. The Prestige planets are the most valuable planets in the game in terms of victory points, but that's all they're good for as they don't contain any symbols or contribute toward technology requirements.

Though these are no longer included when purchasing the game, they are readily available in the BGG Store here: http://boardgamegeekstore.com/products/eminent-domain-planet...

I picked just one set of Promos, but all of the Sentinels of the Multiverse Promos are great additions to the game.

Each promo has a different main ability from the original character that comes in the box, as well as different incapacitated abilities, while keeping the same deck, resulting in different gameplay, even with the same deck used as the original character.

The original Promos for the most part are rather expensive and hard to find with the exception of the most recent ones; however, you can print the promos out (this has been encouraged by Greater Than Games) until they print a full promo pack. A great link to do this is at https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1326133/usuable-photos-all-...

Currently, the Prime Wardens Promos and KNYFE are available at conventions, but this may be subject to change with the new expansion coming out soon.

Picked this up straight from Portal. Essentials from this pack are:

Custom Wooden components: Adds theme to a game already dripping with theme.

Beast Cards: I would say these lighten up the beast deck a bit and make it a little more reasonable.

Sailor: Any new character is a good thing.

Character stickers for the pawns: These really, really add to the game. Why these don't come with the game is beyond me.

King Kong Island: New official scenario. Just get it.

Tracing Doctor Livingstone: Another new official. Very clever, very challenging.

The rest of the promos are a meh. Interesting to use but usually never come out of the box.

One of two promos that I am adding for Catan, both of which were officially added in the later expansion, Catan: Traders & Barbarians.

Once I played with the Harbormaster, it never left my game. In Catan, when you get trapped along the ocean at the beginning of the game, there's very little you can do to make a comeback. Harbormaster provides that opportunity, giving you the extra little 2VP push to make you a viable candidate for victory.

It can be purchased with the rest of the Traders & Barbarians pack. If you are looking for art in the 3rd edition style, see the image that I linked, which I put on BGG a couple of years ago. This can be printed and pasted on top of an unused "Building Costs" card.

The second of two Catan promos I am adding to this list. It was also republished in Catan: Traders & Barbarians.

Fishermen adds a new type of resource--fish--that can be traded in for various effects. Like the Harbormaster before it, this promo added in a reason to build along the shore. I rarely play Catan without this anymore.

You can get this promo with Traders & Barbarians. Once you have it, you can also pick up a few modifications I made to it 2 years ago:
* Fish Resource Cards
* Extra Chevrons and Seafarers Adaptation

Purchased this little gem from the Geek Store where it is still available (certainly one of the most easily obtainable promos ever).
The six tiles (one of each color) included in the promo are magical in the sense that they are not subject to the rules of orientation that govern the other pieces in the game. This often opens up building opportunities and allows for completion of longer walls. Some have complained that the tiles increase the playing time of the game; we found that it gives you the extra time you need to complete your building projects.
Great addition to the game; we never play without these tiles!

Again, we purchased this promo from the Geek Store where it is, indeed, still available.
Whether it is strategically wise to collect them or not, the bonus routes always seem to become the focus of some players when we play Airlines. The two additional bonus routes are an enticement to get in on the action and pick up those bonus points before others do.
Airlines Europe is one of our favorite games! We always play with the new bonus routes and usually we add "The Presidents" promo which is also quite good. We don't really enjoy "Flight Ban".

This promo adds a whole new character that can played through the entire campaign. You can even play through Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Base Set with him.

What's the best thing I like about him? I really enjoy 4 character solo campaigns. With the character add-on deck, I was stuck with 11 characters so one of my playthroughs would have to be with 3 characters. Ranzak makes 12!

A nice new ship to choose from, different from the four identical ships included in the base game. Allows a fifth player to play! It doesn't include the drive core required to play but you can simply memorize the card (move 6 instead of 5. Done!).

Now sold separately with a drive core card.

A military victory in Lord of the Rings: Friends & Foes was just too easy. And, frankly, unsatisfying as well. Add in the Black Gate and that simple, unsatisfying victory is snatched away. Work Harder! You also get two cards to help the Fellowship overcome this new obstacle.

Included in the Lord of the Rings: Sauron expansion.

A promo for Lewis & Clark.

Everything in the game uses icons for the resources, and yet the resources themselves are plain wooden hexes.

These make it much easier to correlate the icons on the cards to the resource hexes (instead of just going by color), and I feel that they should have been included.

These are still available on the BGG Store.

When we first played this game and set out the tiles (in their 5x5 grid with the corners missing) I assumed an expansion was more or less inevitable.

These four extra tiles are really useful in the base game as it makes going out to the far edges of the board more viable. Fortunately, you can print out the tiles.

These nifty tiles are collected whenever the player rolls two or three of the same number. They can then be used to add or subtract one from a dice value potentially allowing you to take an action you could not before.

Great little addition which reduces player frustration especially in higher player count games.

I would not play without them now.
