It’s Show and tell time.

This list's intent is to be an art space and coffee table book.

Got something special; a wee trinket or artefact that you love or loves you? Show us - let the dog see the rabbit:

Pictures or it didn't happen! (Representative images are acceptable.)

Extra credit given if there is an interesting (or rambling) story or tale to tell.

Please thumb the best bits.

Lenin Pin Badge

Worthless and common as anything but this one’s special. Or at least it’s story is.

Back in the day at an internal young peoples festival in a hotel in the Soviet Union. A young gay Russian creeps back to make love with a foreigner. The love making/wooing is disturbed as the security apparatus has gotten wind of things and are banging on the foreigner's door planning to apprehend and make an example of the young man.

Through fear he opens the window - and steps out high above the street below. Afraid he edges further out on the slippy ledge, wearing little and exposed to the snow. He reaches the next window and bangs on it; it opens he safely enters. The police search the other room but find nothing. The young man escaped and as way of thanks gives this wee badge to the window opener (not me).

Crocheted armour with detailed belt, crest and chain mail hood

Like any normal person, I always plan on buying some armour. Every now and then I’ve gotten really close to picking some up but a nagging doubt has stopped me.

In the last decade this has come in the form of my lover:
“You’ll regret it. Where will you store it.”
“In the front room!”
“No you won’t.”
“Fine in the wardrobe, I don’t need all those shirts”.
“What will you use it for?”
“Hmmm… To keep fit. Once a week I stick it on and just potter around”
“Don’t do it.”
“Alright fine not full plate - what about chain mail?

Then for Christmas my Lover’s mother gave me this. Home made! For me!

Holly hell… the most thoughtful and best gift in the world. Most Excellent and nice and warm too.

Art by my Lover's Grandfather

My lover's grandfather passed on last year. He was old like an elephant, played jazz, told the best stories, when his wife wasn't around told jokes that wouldn't be allowed on the BBC (totally progressive but also really risqué), was an artist, (was passionate about France, Staffordshire and Denmark amongst many many other places), loved wine, cheese, asian food and Pâté and was a gentleman and kind to me and I strongly expect everyone else.

Anyway I'd say his art style was abstract expressionism and he was probably a few years older than Pollock but only a few. He painted and painted and painted. We are lucky enough to have some of his art... here are a few of my favourite pieces we have in the house.

Pottery Catan Tapas Dishes

Unique one of a kind, not for sale to the general public - Catan tapas dishes. Anyway just wanted to say, how thoughtful and that these are wonderful, as of course my sister is who gave me these.

Not wild about the IP issues but it's a very kind, one of a kind gift - No I don't encourage anyone to rip off artists or infringe IP. Let's not get my sister banged up because I wanted to show off.

Excuse the poor image.

Ceramic Paper cup

From a distance behold a crappy throwaway disposable plastic cup but it’s actually ceramic and is frankly excellent.

Originals are from the 70s. It's kinda been mass produced at times and is still in production but remains a nice piece.

It's my own little affordable tribute to Gavin Turks bronze sleeping bag 'Habitat' (which I adore... and would like to have)

Walrus Figure carved from a Walrus Tusk

For the record this is a fairly old piece that I inherited. If you don't plan on eating it and it isn't about to eat you; don't kill it. Sorry Granma you're going to have to go (I'm joking she went years ago... tasted alright too).

I grew up loving this piece.

Due to a number of owners and their attempts to keep it clean the rolls of fat carved it's back have been totally smoothed.

Anyway who doesn't fundamentally respect walruses. Just a cracking wee design from mother nature.

As a form of art I do often move towards the macabre and sinister. I like to think that the person that killed the Walrus's heart really wasn't in it and that they created this piece as some form of penitence, with tears in their eyes while being rocked on the boat back to Shetland.

Oh and board game designers - there is no game with Walrus in the title... hello niche.

Carved Pig Head

I love pigs. Always have done.

Another one of my general mad wants is taxidermy which I like because of the macabre element and the craft but also because I really like animals. For the latter reason I've never owned any.

The solution was this piece. Just a cracker. I really like his/her ears and the way the sculptor has used wee droves to create a texture, which over the years has created patination and even more definition. The whole thing weighs 6 kilo's and is a bit of a bugger to hang on the wall. More often than not he/she sits propped up in my study and occasionally is used as a candle holder centre piece for dinner parties.

My love for pigs once almost caused an international incident at the institution I was working, between the Canadian, German and Libyan contingents. The latter group had given the former lot some money to buy me a present with - a life size ceramic piglet was selected... (they knew me so well!). The Libyans, however, were understandably horrified and boycotted payment. It all worked out fine in the end... I ended up with double the presents.

Enamelled Owl Bottle Opener.

One of these wee items that you fall in love with when you see it and then every time after you use it. I like owls, the colours and love enamel work. It's good and heavy too.

Brass Owl Vesta Holder and Striker with Colourful Glass Eyes

Here's a nice thing that remains fairly accessible. Match holders and strikers for hundreds of years were very popular, particularly in owl form, and there are some amazing examples out there, these two are just nice and kinda come at the end of their common use. Circa say 40s-50s though they could be 20s/30s but they have a mass produced/cheap feel to them which makes me go for the later dates.

What's really nice about these is that to light the match you struck it on the owl's belly! Both of my owls' tumms show a lot of smoothness from years of use... which I find really rather appealing. Nowadays however, UK matches as standard no longer light from friction alone, so these two have been repurposed as candle or pen holders.

The eyes come in other colours too, including blue, yellow and red.

Portmeirion Totem coffe set in cobalt blue

These come in 4 colours but the blue is my favourite by far. Delicate, cute and zealously coloured and designed. Then there is the handle... oh yes! Heavens yes!

Cracking 60s offering. Which really finally makes sense today, as these tiddly cups (cans) were mad before espresso was well known in the UK, meaning you had to top yourself up too often, risking knocking over the zealously tall coffee pot each time.

Wee Painting of a Tram and a Pub

Here’s a wee rather questionably painted picture of a Glasgow tram (which ceased to be in 1962) going by a pub, Curlers, that most Glasgow folk North of the Clyde will have drunk* in (Read: been drunk in). 'Curlers' is still in operation today, after a hundred of owners and rebrands (it dates from the 17th century). The name ‘Curlers' comes as it was apparently situated near a big pond, used in winter (Read: Scotland) for curling.

I’ve certainly been happily drunk there plenty of times, stumbling and shambling in the footsteps of others, and like thousands before talking guff and meaning every single word.

Planchette Board

This Planchette board is pretty infamous in my family. During WW2 it was used by my aunts who were serious lifelong Christians but still found time to contact the dead.... yeah...

Anyway there are a few stories to do with this board. Most of the time it didn't do anything but a few times they got an answer. Including getting answers regarding when the war would end (which turned out to be correct.. hmmm) and a whole lot of other things, generally written in perfect english but with different writing styles.

Then there is the story of Rosenberg; a 'spirit' that they made contact with the last time they used the board. My aunts never swore - ever, except when they told the Rosenburg story. Rosenburg talked in broken english and delivered a 3 page tirade which was abusive and threatening throughout. Damming them to hell and other exorcist stuff. After that contact they never used the board again.

My great aunts passed on almost 5 years ago. When we were going through their stuff the board turned up! I had never seen it before and was surprised that it actually existed at all, let alone that they still owned it. When I got it home one of the first things I did was set it up... nothing.

Now I don't believe in most of the things that would make this story possible but I do believe my aunts believed.

(As a fun other thing: That pencil is the pencil they contacted Rosenburg with! Whenever I pick it up to write with it I always write Redrum... good horse racing tip for you.)
