This year the wife and I geared up for our eighth(!) ConnCon, and it's probably the one I was looking forward to the most (more on that later). However, it was the first post-elimination diet, so no beer for me, nor most foods to soak up other forms of alcohol, so this turned out to be my most sober(ish) ConnCon since the first.

THURSDAY
Lisa and I met up with Mark, Mary, Amy, Matt, Rich, Peg, Jim, Alyce and John McD for dinner at the always hilariously named Plan B Burger. While waiting for our meal, we played a few rounds of Pairs. It's super fast, and friendly to eaters--we played Vegas style (only the dealer touches the cards).

Everyone got a kick out of the idea that there are no winners, only one loser, especially when that loser is me.

We unofficially opened the con with a 4-hour Cards Against Humanity marathon. There were 9 of us. I'm not listing the names out again because I already typed this entry once and accidentally closed the window before saving.

I got to play the single most offensive card combo I've ever played. I felt ashamed and slightly ill for playing it, which means I'm playing CAH right. The black card was "If you don't want to experience ______, you should probably avoid ______." My combo? "Actually getting shot, for real"/"Historically black colleges."

Aaaaand this becomes the first geeklist to get RSPed.

In another fantastic round, the black card was "Eventually, ______ leads up to ______." Joe was given the tough decision between "Getting so angry you pop a boner"/"Concealing a boner" and "A box that is conscious and wishes it weren't a box"/"Being a motherfucking box". Joe picked the boxes if only because how many times do cards from that expansion win? (Answer: twice. "A box of biscuits, a box of mixed biscuits, and a biscuit mixer" won a later round.)

FRIDAY

A month ago, the brothers McD and I played Trajan for the first time and agreed to try it out again at ConnCon as veterans. We did well remembering the rules--it only took about 10 minutes to figure them out again.

Joe stuck with his military strategy from the first game and took off with a monster lead. John bounced back and forth between commodities and construction. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do until I won the first senate vote and picked the bonus tile that awards points for other gold bonus tiles. I went hard on Senate for the rest of the game, even getting all the way to the top level in the third year. That 35 cumulative points was enough to catch up to Joe and eventually surpass him, especially with end of game scoring (I never lost the vote).

Three different times during the game a Trajan veteran would come up and make a comment about how there weren't a lot of +2 tiles in use. Two of them, friends of Joes, stuck around and kept talking about it to the point were I kind of snapped at them. I toned it down and apologized, but I do hate it when people discuss strategy during a game, especially when they're not playing it!

TEK was my first teaching slot of the con. There was a bit of overflow, so it was opened to two tables, which also allowed for a walk-on.

Each table played two games, and I liked how they all played out. On my table, Dave OT played Orcs and destroyed us on the tower. But game two (played with the Crown expansion) went a completely different direction, with Jeremy, in his first ConnCon, winning with a strong magic/expansion strategy.

All four total games featured different strategies and amounts of wars, which shows that there's a lot more going on with this game than a single play would suggest.

Avri, John and I quickly broke out this play-to-win. It's similar to Love Letter in that it's a small deck of cards (19 in this case) and plays quickly. I liked the drafting mechanism, and I'm curious how this will play when all players are very familiar with the deck. Enjoyable and worth trying out again.

As he joked, it took moving from NJ to Michigan to finally get him to ConnCon.

We both had some free time, so we played the "what should we play game" that usually revolves around vague suggestions that nobody can commit to. I broke out the "what kind of games do you like" expansion, which vastly improves on the gameplay of the original. When it was my turn, I professed my love for stupid dice games, prompting Steve to reply "we're going to be good friends" and break out Luchador.

This game is as stupid as dice games get and I loved every minute of it. It helped that Steve is super enthusiastic and makes games more fun to play. We had 3 tag team matches with a revolving cast of players including Avri, Maren, and one other guy. (Apologies for forgetting.)

Needless to say, I ordered this as soon as I got home.

After Luchador, Steve, Chris, myself and other victims of my fuzzy memory played Mars Attacks. I didn't think it was all that great the first time I played it a month ago--not the worst Steve Jackson dice fest, but not the best either.

This round was great fun to play though, and it came down to a single point difference between me and Guy-I'm-Forgetting, with me coming out on top after conquering Mexico City. ¡Viva!

In past years, I would supply a simple party game for the 5:30 Friday happy hour at the bar, but Avri took over that duty this year with this gem.

Like Cards Against Humanity, it's not about winning. In fact, we didn't bother keeping score. It's more about the silly scenarios and the discussion it inspires.

It turned out it was also a Play-to-Win, so we all handed in our slips. In a drawing that was not at all rigged, Avri pulled my name. Well done, Avri!

I've owned this game for 2 years, but found the rules just daunting enough to put off for later, especially since I have the super deluxe edition that means there's a super deluxe amount of stuff to tote around.

David Spinetti taught this one very well. It's a simple game that has a ton of key words and fiddly rules. That's to be expected since it's essentially Final Fantasy Tactics: The Board Game.

I loved it. We traded trash talk the entire game, and constantly formed and broke alliances. My favorite moment, however, was knocking David out of the game by kissing him with a Tofu. I couldn't wait to tell my wife, who knows nothing of Krosmaster but loves the Tofu plush that came as a KickStarter bonus.

Oh, and I may have offered some whiskey to my underage opponent. Thankfully she refused right as I made my assessment that she was clearly still in high school. In fairness, I would've rescinded the offer before pouring, but I'm pretty sure there's an FBI file on me now.

So maybe I went through more of the whiskey during Krosmaster than I planned, because I couldn't tell you much about who was playing this. I do recall finding an open table and we all played an online version with our cell phones. It was fun, but man, coming up with good questions under pressure and the haze of alcohol is tough.

My next teaching slot, and there was quite the turnout, mostly comprised by what I'll call the Bonet Contingent including Mike, Jess and Alex as well as some non-BCers like Britt and Dave OT. I have both regular Coconuts and Duo, so I combined them for a 6 player game. We didn't bother with the cards or limited coconuts. We played with a basic 6 cups wins rules, and everyone seemed to have a good time. I repeatedly heard "man, now I wish I backed this on Kickstarter" as well as a few "this is better than beer pong".

Molnar even brought his set over for a 2-player game when the main table ran out of seats. He then painstakingly set up Click Clack Lumberjack only for it to go unplayed. I feel your pain, Molnar, ask me about Tumblin' Dice.

After Coconuts, the same group played another few rounds of Billionaire Banshee as a stole a few rounds of Jameson from Mike and Jess, who were already low on reserves after Mike accidentally broke two bottles of other stuff earlier in the day.

Alex was telling us of a Dating Game variant he knew, and now I'm inspired to create a Fuck/Marry/Kill variant of my own.

Alas, I was feeling pretty drunk and tired and called it a night after 5-6 turns.

SATURDAY

Getting into bed at 1am, I knew I drank way too much. Not helping matters was I didn't eat much either. I didn't have the spins, but I was close. I decided to turn off my alarm and leave it to fate if I would make it to my 8am slot. The gods smiled upon me and I woke up with enough time to shower and only slightly hungover. So it amazed me to see Mike and Jess bright eyed and bushy tailed. I wish I had their livers and minimal sleep requirements. Alex was there too, but he doesn't drink, so I'm not as impressed.

During set up, we called the unpainted meeples the nude meeples. I named the brewery they must work for: Stray Hair of the Dog. Obviously, I choose to play as the naked meeple.

Brew Crafters is great fun. It's more accurately called Beergricola, sharing a rather large amount of similarities with 'Gric, though I like how each turn is split up into two separate worker placement phases, each with their own completely different rules and actions. Otherwise, it's a tighter, less fiddly version of Agricola. Paying your workers (aka feeding your family) adds the source of tension that makes games like this great.

Much like my first game of Agricola, I was about halfway through the game when I finally found my strategy. I focused on abilities that gathered me more advanced ingredients to brew as many different advanced beers as possible, then scored a ton of bonus points at the end for brewing them.

Looking forward to playing again, but I'm going to wait for the custom insert for my own copy beforehand because this game has a serious amount of chits.

OK, so I wasn't entirely hungover, but my stomach wasn't in the best state. Most folks will remember last year when, after losing a battle with Loter's "tequila", I spent hours in the bathroom dry heaving. Not looking to repeat this, I retired to my room for a quick nap and tons of water.

Feeling recouped by 1, I was eager to play in the cancelled-but-not Roll for the Galaxy slot. Race for the Galaxy is my favorite game and I've heard great things about Roll.

It did not disappoint. Granted, after 2.5 plays, I'm terrible at it, but it was great fun. Chris managed to win twice with the same Produce/Ship strategy. I hope that's not the only good path to victory, but I'm sure I'll find more as I get to learn the tiles more.

It was also great to get some games in with Gola and Gil. I tend to play a lot with Gola each year, but that wasn't the case this day. As for Gil, we joke on how we're always in each other's vicinity, but actually playing games together is rare.

Alex took this photo of me after I joked that all ConnCon videos are of people appearing to not having any fun since they're so deep in thought and thus not smiling.

Lisa and I broke out Machi Koro, a play to win, when we had some down time. There was a third player, but I forgot his name, so we'll call him Dave, since 63% off all ConnCon attendees are either named Dave or Eric/k. Lisa thinks it was Jeff. I disagree based on no reason.

Anyways, DaveJeff stomped us. Well, Lisa had her dignity, but I couldn't get anything going. I couldn't roll any of my good cards, and just kept feeding DaveJeff all my cash.

I would get my revenge though...

I entered the Baseball Highlights tournament at the last minute and hoped it would end in time for dinner. I backed it on KickStarter after Avri's rave review when he played it last year, but I couldn't quite figure out the rules (I always learn better by playing than reading).

The game is easy to learn and a lot of fun, especially when I was paired up with DaveJeff and demolished him 7 games to 2. (I was one of the top seeds, but had to drop out of the brackets due to other slots.)

I'll definitely be revisiting this one. It's one of the more unique deck builders I've played.

I ran Decathlon 2 years ago. It was a 7-player game and people complained that it took too long to play, so I decided not to run it last year. Those same people complained there was no Decathlon! From that moment, I spent a year planning Decathlon 2015.

I knew right away the best course of action was to split it up into heats of 3-4 players, but then I would need a final event to determine the gold, silver and bronze winners. One popped in my head: the marathon.

I spent the rest of 2014 designing 26.2: The Marathon Dice Game, but more on that in the next entry.

Through out the past year, different ideas for how to run Decathlon popped in my head. My favorite was to have everyone represent fake nations. Then I figured it would be fun to give everyone index cards and draw their flag. It had nothing to do with the game, but still.

I took it one step further and had a custom made track suit featuring my nation's name (Dreznyrstan) and mini flags sporting the flag design I created:

Sadly, the atrium was too dark for good pics, but I know Mark took a good one or two in the main gaming room.

As players arrived, I had them draw their flags. Jessica's was the clear winner, with a spade in front of a radial gradient that could easily pass for a Dixit card on one side, and a festive alien-like thing on the other. Other highlights include Avri's flag featuring Freddie Mercury's mustache and Dave OT's crudely drawn middle finger.

In total, 17 players showed up! We had 3 tables of 4 and one of 5. (Next year I'll cap it at 4 per table since the table of 5 took a half hour longer to play.)

One event that never sat right with me in Decathlon was the High Jump, so I tweaked it to both be more strategic and take less time. Decathlon vets seemed to really like the change.

At my table, Joe ran away with the game. He not only won our heat, but scored 40 more points than the next highest player. Erica won her heat in the tightest race of the day (207-205-204-199). Gola had an amazing final event to pass Mike for the win, and Avri won his heat in what was the lowest scoring table of the day.

Jordan also won the honor of finishing dead last with 160 points. He was awarded (and proudly wore) a medal of a frownie face covered in thumbs-down and the words You Stink in bright red letters. On the back it was inscribed "I tripped on my own shoelaces at the 2015 ConnCon Decathlon." The ribbon was covered in hearts, stars and peace symbols.

Those players, along with Linda Shea (making a triumphant comeback after a 4-year ConnCon absence), myself, Chris and Mike as wild cards, advanced to the final event...

...26.2!

It was a strong group of players with more play testers than I expected - Joe, Avri, Erica and Mike had all previously played (and gave me great feedback).

It was tough to tell from the early goings on who would win. Joe got off to a hot start, then had a series of busts. I managed to stay just behind the peloton, but couldn't get myself in range.

Eventually, Linda found herself with plenty of water in reserves, so she started going big with her rolls. Nearly everyone was clean and high scoring. Even her rerolls with the water tokens paid off. Linda ended up taking the gold several turns before anybody else would cross the finish line.

Avri brought home the silver and coming up in third was seemingly Avri's neighbor Chris, but Chris fell 2/10 of a mile short and another turn was required. I was about 2 miles behind him and needed to call a Hail Mary. While Chris played it safe with 4 dice, I went big with 7 and 2 water tokens in reserve. I initially busted, but my reroll gave me exactly what I needed and I sling-shotted past him for bronze.

Prizes were medals and 8 ConnCon dice in gold, silver and bronze (enough to play Decathlon). Since I print extra of each for myself, I distributed my bronze dice to each of the finalists with 2 going to gold medal winner Linda.

(Sidenote: I loved how Avri, Linda and I sported our medals all day Sunday. We had several people ask how we got them and they looked sad to have missed out on the action.)

The event went over even better than I expected and I can't wait to run it again next year! Any feedback on how to make it even better is more than welcome!

Chris broke out my copy for Roll for the Galaxy again. I may not be remembering this correctly, but I recall Gola decided not to play because he was too drunk to learn it, thus totally forgetting that he played it with us earlier in the day. That's probably not what happened, but I don't care, it's funnier that way.

I had to drop out a few turns in to prepare for Pretty Pretty Princess, but as I left, I told Chris he wasn't allowed to win via Produce/Ship this time. Coming back and seeing that sea of red in his dice cup, it looks like he took to military quite nicely.

(In accordance to Loter's wishes, I'm shortening or altering names to protect the regretful.)

The shit show to end all shit shows.

I changed out of my track shirt and into a sports bra and yellow tutu. Hey, princesses can be active too. Also, in a major shift, I was mostly sober. I was still reeling from the previous day's drinks that I just wasn't feeling it.

The fashion show started off strong with the promise of a bottle of shimmering liquor disturbingly and accurately referred to as "Grimace Jizz". Though I got a strong ovation at my introduction, I quickly became the villain when I realized I don't know how to twerk and refused to drink Loter's tequila. It's not the first time 50+ people said "Fuck You, Erik!" to me in unison.

The Boy won the Grimace Jizz but passed it around to anyone who dared try it. I can best describe it as tasting like a flat can of grape soda with 10 packets of Sweet 'n Low tossed in.

I played at a table that included a guy drinking Bacardi 151 from a Camelbak who won in 6 turns. Mindy kept screaming at her opponents calling them whores. OT stripped to his boxer briefs, then slapped M, also only clad in boxers, on the ass. M then patted my junk like a tender football coach.

It only got worse from there.

Everyone at the final table was down to their underwear, a disturbing development since a 6-year old girl was standing between two of them watching the game. Bacardi 151 guy was getting louder and louder and we were wondering if he was going to take his dick out.

Later, Loter came up to me with this: "We have a situation, and you're the most responsible adult here." You know it's bad when I'm the responsible one.

A friend, who an hour ago slurred like I never heard anyone slur before, was passed out on the floor in front of the service entrance. I tried to get her up, but she just wouldn't comply. She at least told me her room number so I could get her husband to help.

When I came back down, the nook where she was in and out of sleep reeked of puke. I don't do well with the smell, so I decided to make sure she got back to her room safely from afar.

All in all, it was exactly what we all expect from the Pretty Pretty Princess tournament.

We slept in. For the first Sunday ConnCon in recent memory, I was not hungover. I felt so sprightly I went for a jog. We didn't get down to the game room until noon.

We started off with a pair of Play to Wins and Westeros Intrigue was the first. It's not very intriguing. It feels like a game made for five-year-olds, so the Game of Thrones theme was laughably inappropriate. Lisa and I made the most of it by first playing all the dead or missing characters in the first round, then creating a story dictated by each character played in the second. Still, we didn't bother adding our names to the drawing. Knizia may be a great designer, but he can sometimes use a filter.

The other Play to Win was Mascarade that we first played 3-player with Joe, then 5-player with more victims of my faulty memory.

I enjoyed this one. It's a good mix of Citadels and Bullshit. I'm usually not a fan of bluffing games, but they're more fun when you don't even know if you're bluffing or not.

There was a surprisingly large number of 1pm slot games I wanted to play, but I opted for the only one I've never played before. Plus, Diamonds is a trick taking game, a genre I love, but that love is not shared by my friends.

Erick Sklaar (not sure if that's how he spells his name, but dammit, my version looks cool) taught it. I love the idea of gaining and stealing points during the round as well as at the end of them.

I started off slow, but had a huge final round where I used clubs to steal a ton of points from my opponent across the table, a move that stole victory from him to me.

It's not a ConnCon unless I play a Kris Burm game.

YINSH is my second favorite GIPF game behind ZERTZ, but I still can't get my head around it. I was able to apply some late pressure on John with a wall-hugging strategy I started early in the game, but he was able to pull out victory in the end. (Though it was funny that he thought I won not seeing his winning move for a few minutes.)

Lisa bought this for me 2 years ago, but I never got around to playing it since, as stated before, I suck at learning from the rulebook.

Molnar brought us into a 6-player game that his friend won after escaping the first temple with a ton of points before the rest of us got crushed by rocks. Later on, Molnar was the last explorer in the temple. He opted to leave with a good amount of diamonds, but when we flipped the next card to see if it was a hazard, it was in fact the 17.

Fun game. I can see why it's an oft-reprinted classic.
