I've always enjoyed board games, but over the last few years I've been playing more and more. I'd been wanting to attend a board game convention, but for one reason or another never made it. So this year, I set my sights on ConnCon and had an absolute blast - I fear that I may now be irreversibly hooked on Conventions.

This is also my first Geeklist, so please bear with me if I muck it all up. Hopefully, I capture everything that I played, which may be tough and I'm guessing I'll forget something that I played (and definitely have forgotten some names already).

So, my first ConnCon game (and first convention game period) was Mysterium, hosted by Eric Summerer (who played the ghost). We had almost a full table and unfortunately I can't remember all the names at the table (sorry guys, need to take notes next time). It was an absolute blast and after Eric told us he had never won before, it really amped it up for us. We did really well as a team and won the game! A fantastic way to start off my first convention.

I played this game with Hoyce and a teenager whose name escapes me. We were taught by Dustin. Dustin was a great teacher and fun guy and we caught on pretty quickly. I can't remember for sure who won, but I think it was the teenager. Fun game and everyone took a slightly different tack in their strategy.

Dustin, Hoyce, and I then played "Impulse", which was a "Play to Win" game. Interesting concept. Probably not my favorite game, but Hoyce and Dustin were a lot of fun. After this, the three of us may have played something else, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was (definitely need a notepad next convention).

This is the game I originally forgot! (I saw it on Dustin's ConnCon Geeklist and it hit me that this was the one I forgot.) Played it with Hoyce and Dustin - my first play and a fun game.

Dustin had to leave after awhile, so Hoyce and I played Koryo, which is a game I own, but have never played. It's a quick and fun game and I enjoy the mechanics. Hoyce won that game and as with the other games, he was a lot of fun. He wisely went off to sleep after our Koryo game.

After Koryu, I was on my way up to the room when I walked by a table hosted by Steve, who I believe is a Men in Black rep for Steve Jackson games. I saw that he had "Illuminati" on the table, which is a game I own, but have never played. I asked if he would mind teaching me, which he happily did. Lots more fun and I really enjoyed the game. Thanks Steve!

So, that ended my first day of the convention (or I guess I should say half day). I was determined to get to sleep early while there, but I failed on that every night of the Con.

I was hurting a little on Saturday morning because of lack of sleep, but went down at 8 am to play Snowdonia. A fellow player named Linda and I were taught by Phil. As with Dustin, what struck me about Phil was how excited he was to teach and play the game (something I experience again with another game that night). I enjoyed Snowdonia, but it wasn't my favorite game - I do think the more plays of it, the more fun it would become.

For my next game, Don taught four of us: Deb, Mary Beth, Julie, and me. Don said at the beginning that the first time he played, he didn't like Lewis and Clark, but by the third time, he really liked it. I think that's the way it will be with me. I enjoyed the first play, but man it was tough going and I made many, many mistakes (and mistakes can be punishing in this game). Julie won the game and I came in last (and felt lucky to get as far as I did). I'm looking forward to playing again.

After Lewis and Clark, I walked around a little then came back and saw that Deb and Mary Beth were about to start "Splendor". This is one of my favorite filler games, so I asked to join. We all got into the "Splendor" zone and quickly played through the game. I really enjoyed the game and Deb and Mary Beth were both very good and fun players.

After "Splendor", we decided to play "Can't Stop". Deb and I were doing pretty well, but then Mike Fitzgerald came over and was talking to us about "Baseball Highlights 2045" while Mary Beth took her turn. Right when Mike left, we looked back and Mary Beth said "I won" - it was hilarious because neither Deb or I saw her turn, so of course every chance I had for the rest of the convention, I ribbed her about cheating at "Can't Stop" (I hope she knows I was only kidding)

This is one that I've really been wanting to play. Phil taught us the game and did very well, especially considering he was teaching three tables at one time. I played with Deb and Mary Beth from "Can't Stop" fame, and another guy named Christopher. It was a lot of fun and Deb pulled away from us, I tried to figure out a way to catch her, but it just wasn't happening. Very fun game and one of the two that I ordered when I returned. Oh, we played with the base game and some of the expansion modules.

Right after Viticulture, I wasn't sure what I was going to do next, but took about 5 steps and Francie (who I hadn't met yet) was asking a couple of guys if they wanted to play "Drum Roll". I said "if you are looking for a fourth, I'll play" (or something along those lines). They accepted, so George, Eric, Francie, and I played. "Drum Roll", which was fantastic and Francie and George were very patient with Eric and I while teaching (although Francie's voice was about to go). Very, very fun game and one that I'll be looking to buy if I can find it at a reasonable price. As the night before, I stayed up way later than planned.

On Sunday morning, I woke up and went down for my 8 am game of "Imperial Settlers". I believe one guy was named Ben, but I can't remember the other guy's name (my few remaining brain cells were about shot at this point). We were taught by Eric. I played the Barbarians and played way too conservatively, but had a lot of fun and it's another game I would like to get. As with every other instructor at ConnCon, Eric was very patient and a great teacher. Lots more fun. After this game, I took a short nap, which really helped.

For this game, Dale taught Julie (who I had played with in my "Lewis and Clark" game), Alexander, and me. I really, really liked the game (one of the two that I've since purchased after being introduced to at the Con). For some reason, our particular game went really long, but it was still a lot of fun. Dale trounced us pretty well. They were starting to turn the lights off in the room, so it was time to head home.

Overall, ConnCon was one of the most fun experiences of my life and I'm looking forward to attending another one.
