This year's MACE West took place March 20-22 in Asheville, NC and I was able to attend Saturday the 21st. Originally planned to get a hotel for the entire family, then as the kids gained plans for the weekend the wife and I downgraded the room, which was ultimately canceled when life removed our excess funds. Ended up driving out early that morning and driving back late that night (3hrs one way). Had an amazing time as always both as GM and a player split between several games and got to meet some new people as well as hang out with the regulars.

My first game slot was as GM of a player's choice event from 9-11am including several different filler games I had available. My wife and I setup this one first as we waited for players and ended up having 2 others join us, including one of the con coordinators.

The wife wondered off and just as I was about to reach back for Coloretto to teach the other player how it works as a 2 player game, a group of 4 friends wondered over and we ended up breaking out Tsuro as it would easily support all 6 of us. The newcomers had never played before and really liked it as a filler.

My second time slot was from 11am-1pm and given how well this one ran at the last con I attended I decided to run it again. Even got out the polish and spruced it up a bit (though I'm still missing the powder to make it really, really slick).

One player from my first time slot stuck around for this one and was joined by 3 more, so I sat out and just judged the shots. Was rejoined by the con coordinator who missed out on playing last con as well as by The Devil who's always decked out in his full outfit at each MACE I've attended (though I haven't the slightest what it's for; assuming a LARP).

A few left after some plays and I ended up getting in a few rounds with one of the players who I mercilessly slaughtered repeatedly (sorry!)

I signed up to play The Stars Are Right which was slotted from 1-3pm and ended up playing 1v1 against the GM. We played with our hands exposed as a teaching game, though I wouldn't say the game is complex enough to warrant playing that way. GM increased his hand size to 6 really early on, but I ended up getting a 2nd great old one into play to win the game a turn before he was able to earning me the below certificate.

This year the con also ran a game of Killer concurrent with the con throughout Saturday, starting at 10am and ending at midnight should more than 1 assassin remain alive. Total of 11 had signed up to play, but 4 dropped out, so ended up being a small game this time around. I invested in a sniper rifle immediately as I thought using my cell phone camera was a neat idea and staked out the parking lot after lunch to wait for an opportune shot at my initial target.

After eliminating my target I learned that they had already taken out 2 others and was setup to take out a third before I ended their kill streak. Not only that, but there was now only 3 targets left. I found my next target very quickly and while planning to take my shot my own assassin walked up behind me and dropped me where I stood (figuratively).

On the up side the remaining 2 assassins didn't waste any time attempting to eliminate each other and I got to witness their final duel.

Will definitely be participating in this sort of thing again meeple

While waiting for my Killer target to go out into the open I ran into some con regulars wallowing in their huge haul of Dice Masters purchases from the dealer's room. After a short chat any will power I had remaining to resist doing similar was spent and I ended up buying the last starter set which I plan on breaking in thoroughly tonight.

I still had a while left to wait before my next GM session and there wasn't really anything on the schedule at this time I was interested in, so wondered over to the game library to see what I could try out. As I was walking in the same GM who had taught me The Stars Are Right called me back over to get in a session of Cthulhu Dice. He was playing a 15 round variant where the winner of each game scored his remaining sanity as points and the champ of the 15 round session would win a copy of the game as well as a slot in that night's tournament.

After I sat down I was quickly joined by 3 others including my Killer target (lol), The Devil and another con attendee. Given how light the game is on its own we each decided to play rather lively to amp up the fun for such an event and had a great time.

I ended up getting my first point in round 10.. though I did manage to catch up to 2 of the others, though my Killer target had double our score and did end up winning.

On the bright side they had lost a previous session earlier in the day where the winner donated them the copy of Cthulhu Dice, so they extended the same to me (woot).

My next GM session was from 7-9pm and was fully booked between 2 families, one of which I've gamed with at MACE several times in the past. I had bought a bluetooth speaker to help with playing the sound track in the loud con environment, which worked great. Unfortunately the group had a tough time with the default number of gems and did nearly win on their 4th attempt after I had snuck away a couple gems to help them out.

All but 1 wondered off and the con coordinator rejoined my table, so the 3 of us got in a game together (including a couple extra gems) easily defeating the game with time to spare. The regular attendee left after this round, but 2 others came by and joined in for one final round in which we again defeated the game rather swiftly.

Love this game so much meeple

My final GM slot from 9-11pm was demoing this one, which I've unfortunately not gotten to pay anywhere near enough. I only had 2 pre-register, so I alerted the players early on so that we could each work on recruiting more. By 9:10 we had 6 players (not including me) and so we setup for a 3v3 match so that I could better watch over the madness that was about to occur.

One team did a great job flying about, collecting crystal, using a mine to block their enemy's path, warped out of harm's way and even track beamed the enemy ship into asteroid field. Unfortunately they never managed to get a torpedo past the enemy's jammers/shield. The other team however had a fantastic pilot who twice repositioned their ship to fire double torpedos into a defenseless side of the opposing ship to quickly blow them to pieces.

Everyone had a blast playing and immediately discussed which among them should be the ones to buy a copy for their future game nights! I personally need to pick up the Die Fighter expansion to make the game playable with less players to better fit my normal group.

While cleaning up Space Cadets I got out the PnP copies of my latest work-in-progess Kendo Shōbu to distribute as most of those who had just played were con regulars that've been following my development thread here on BGG. The con coordinators also accepted a couple copies, so hopefully from these groups as well as those following online I'll have some good, blind testing feedback coming in soon to add to my notes.

The wife and I headed home, loot in hand, arriving at the house around 2:30am, hitting the bed pretty hard. Jeff and Ron, you guys rocked the place again this year; thank you both so much for your hard work and I look forward to working with you guys again for MACE this November.
