**NOTE - I accidentally deleted this list. Here is a recreation. If I deleted your comment I sincerely apologize. I hope it won't dissuade you from leaving further comments. **

I'm a big fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000. I think I've only seen about 3/4ths of the episodes, but I'm not sure I could say which ones. Long ago, I recorded or acquired VHS copies of them all....but I gave that to a friend in favor of getting them on DVD. I realize that these days you can find them all one YouTube or streaming services around the web.

Anyway, I've decided to rewatch the entire series, sans the KTM days. I'm not sure at what pace I'll go, but I want to document this and record some comments. It would be great if fellow-fans had reactions to share....but I'm content with this list also just serving as a journal. I plan to add an entry for each successive episode as I watch them.

Does this have anything to do with board games? They're both hobbies I share...so there's that.

If you stumbled upon this list, welcome!

101 - The Crawling Eye

This was the first episode on The Comedy Channel. TV's Frank isn't there yet, and J Elvis Weinstein does Tom Servo as well as being one of the mads. I never really enjoyed him in that role the way I did with Frank.

The movie was better quality than most of their stuff. Giant eyeball aliens hide on a mountain, a psychic goes there and accomplishes nothing, and a white male American ends up saving the day with Molotov cocktails.

The riffing was slower paced, and obviously they haven't found their stride yet. But I still found myself laughing a lot. Joel does the voice on the other side of phone calls and it really works as a joke.

There is also a battle of the eye puns, which cracked me up. Maybe the best line: "Hans is on the Fritz." And "get your Hans off me!"

102 - The Robot vs The Aztec Mummy

This one was preceded by the first part of Commando Cody, kind of a precursor to Rocketeer. My favorite part was after the hero flies to the moon in a rocket, he finds the people of the moon speak English. He's told everyone there is required to learn English in preparation for their plot to invade the Earth.

The main movie is from a series of films originally filmed in Mexico's version of Hollywood in the 50s. There was a gag where they added a peeing sound to a scene where several characters turn their back to the camera. I don't think sound effects were added again after this.

Not too many memorable riffs. There was a clever Major Tom reference. I got a kick out of the bots rooting for The Robot when it went up against the Mummy. (The mummy wins.) They are critical of the design: 1) the robot had no knees and 2) Tom says he finds the fact that they placed a human brain in the robot offensive.

103 - Mad Monster

The 2nd part of Commando Cody precedes the movie. I have to admit, the material and the pace of the serial are a lot better suited to the riffing. Its too bad they couldn't have done more of this. Whoever had the idea for them to start doing shorts/serials really hit onto something.

Joel's delivery on some of his jokes is almost TOO deadpan. The invention exchange was "Hell in a Handbag" and some viewers might not even notice the punch line.

The movie itself was a cross between Frankenstein and Wolfman. I found myself thinking about Ed Wood and Bela Lugosi.

As for memorable riffs:
There was a subtle Police reference about "walking on the moon". Also really liked the Willard Scott outrage (the head moon honcho bears a resemblance).

Its probably a terrible indictment of the movie that there weren't really any particularly memorable riffs that come to mind. I'll freely admit, my attention wanders when I watch Season One stuff. Firstly, I've seen it before a couple times, and secondly...I already KNOW its not their best stuff. Part of rewatching the series is to experience the growth in the show over time. In some ways, Season One is a necessary evil, and I'm eagerly anticipating getting past it. (Its not THAT bad, just not as gut-busting as later material.)

Oh, one funny recurring joke was the crew drawing attention to the small swamp set, and how the characters would cram together to stay in the shot. I have to admit, there was some pretty good camera work in the movie, with neat use of perspective and shadows for the era.

105 - The Corpse Vanishes

It's not episode 104, because they skipped that one then assigned that number to the show at the end of the season.

Commando Cody part 3 was good.

It's funny, I was thinking about Bela Lugosi...and then he was the villain in this episode. You can also see the show starting to mature. The pacing is improving and the jokes have improved timing.

There was a good Fantasy Island Tattoo reference. Also one to a shampoo commercial I remember from 1989 when this episode originally aired. Those kinds do connections only serve to make it feel even more like an inside joke.

In the closing segment, Servo's head explodes. I'd forgotten that that happened...and had a good belly laugh.

106 - The Crawling Hand

Unfortunately, my original post got deleted before being saved. Here is an abbreviated version.

There was no Commando Cody on this episode.

One memorable riff: the protagonist looked like a cross between Jerry Mathers and James Dean, Beaver Without a Cause.

My impressions of the movie were that it was probably pretty intense in its day. But the hand special effects are kind of hilarious all on their own.

107 - Robot Monster

My computer has been having trouble, and once again my initial write-up got lost before I posted it.

There was more Commando Cody. I find myself preferring the shorts to the main feature. The pacing is faster and a lot more conducive to riffing.

But in this case the main feature itself was pretty darn funny. The iconic appearance many would recognize: a guy in a gorilla suit with what looks like a diving bell helmet for a head. When he walks, he walks like a guy in a gorilla suit (not like a gorilla) and there are tons of far-away shots of him climbing up and down hills, picking his way. Also, he gesticulates a lot in ways that are completely at odds with the voice-over dialogue.

My favorite riff here was at the end, when there was this looped scene of him coming towards the viewer. "You ever had deja vous, Joel?" etc... (and they repeat that each time the scene loops). It really cracked me up.

108 - The Slime People

Another Commando Cody short. I found myself wondering if a serial might be viable today, in the setting of motion pictures. Anyway, I'd love to see someone try it.

This movie depicts a subterranean invasion force of these pathetic looking slime people who somehow create a hardened dome of fog around Los Angeles. The protagonists are trapped inside, and trying to survive and escape.

Best riff is near the beginning: you see a slow pan up following a set of footprints on the beach. "Why Lord, during the most difficult times were there only one set of....oh." Pan up to a dead dude laying in the surf with a spear sticking out of his belly. The timing and tone were perfect and it got me stuck chuckling for a solid 5 minutes.

The film uses a LOT of fog and fog filter effects. It obscures the action so much that you truly can't see what's going on. This lended itself to some good jokes.

Here we are, 8 movies into the first season. The quality of the MST3K work is clearly growing from the first couple efforts. They were finding their voice, and its with fond memories that I'm experiencing this walk-through again. So far, I know I've seen all of these at least once before.

109 - Project Moon Base

A double dose of Commando Cody, including some a great string of puns during a fight in a garage.
"He’s getting tired."
"He wrenched his back!" etc.
I found myself laughing out loud for a good stretch.

The feature was a pretty painfully sexist movie where the captain of this moon mission is a woman, mainly because she’s lighter than the other options. A saboteur body double takes the place of a scientist, and causes them to crash onto the lunar surface. But luckily, they catch him when he doesn’t know the Dodgers are from Brooklyn.

In the end, the 2 remaining characters get married as they’re going to be marooned on the moon for several months.

Its sappy. The riffing has clearly improved from the beginning of the season. But I watched a brief documentary extra on the disk with clips of later seasons, and I started to remember how good the show gets at its pinnacle. I’m looking forward to getting to those episodes.

110 - Robot Holocaust

This was the end of Commando Cody and Radar Men from the Moon. Not that the story ends, but the film apparently "broke" and there was an abrupt end to that punctuated with a "Technical Difficulties" sign of the mad scientists. I'll most that funny little short, as it was ripe for the riffing.

This was a color, low-budget 80s movie. I love how one shirtless actor was dubbed "The Nuge" (who also happened to not have any lines at all). There was also an effect where the heroes are walking through a tunnel infested with Flesh Worms, which are painfully just sock puppets sticking through the wall with teeth and eyes.

Finally the lead villain has an accent that is impossible to place. But she acts with conviction and confidence that seems utterly misplaced.

I've let too much time lapse before my report, and there are few memorable riffs at this point. I hope someone got an important grade for a college film-making class or something, because as a commercial endeavor this movie had to be a complete waste. Watching so much of Season 1 close together, I'm getting used to Josh Weinstein's Tom Servo. But I find myself really looking forward to TV's Frank.

This movie was kind of a schizophrenic space movie that wasn't sure if it was a comedy, an action movie or a Cold War commentary.

I've allowed too much time to pass since I saw it, and I can't say that there were any really memorable riffs. I think this is an example of a great movie for the MST3K treatment, but that this also illustrates the relative inexperience of the 1st season. If they'd done this one later on, it might have been a classic.

I do recall several spacesuit fart jokes, which I endorse.

112 - Untamed Youth

Mamie van Doren starred in this 50s teensploitation movie about kids being forced to work picking cotton. The "harsh" conditions seemed kind of like a fun summer camp.

The highlight was that one of the female cotton-pickers looked remarkably like Greg Brady with a wig. Lots of great references there, and a very nice interstitial piece with "A Tribute to Greg Brady".

I enjoyed this one just fine, but getting toward the end of Season 1 I'm really looking forward to TV's Frank and the "real" Tom Servo instead of the deep voiced version from Josh Weinstein.

113 - The Black Scorpion

This is the last numbered episode of Season 1, but actually was the penultimate to air (with a renumbered and previously skipped number 104 filmed and aired last. That's my next one before moving to Season 2.

This was a good episode. I found myself laughing out loud several times. Evidently there was some tax incentive to film in Mexico, so this is a hybrid of American and Mexican actors, set in Mexico. Volcanoes abound, and eventually giant black scorpions attack the populace.

The higher frequency of the riffs was noticeable when you contrast this with the first half of season 1. There were a few great themes on this one that really got me laughing.

1) There was a recurring Bing Crosby voice that Crow would do, usually giving clueless advice to minor characters. They've used that a bit in other episodes, but I think this is the first time I recall seeing it.

2) There was a lot of exploring around volcanoes and rocks. Tons or recurring jokes about being on a golf course. Sometimes the gags get funnier with repetition, and this was one of them.

3) But my favorite was a bit when the protagonists visited a Mexican scientist in his lab. As they were being shown the various experiments and discussing how to fight the Scorpion, Joel and the Bots kept voicing over to make it sound like the whole lab was doing research into new types of Mexican food. "You see these epidermal cells here, moving around? (so that means this salsa is really hot, then?)" There were a bunch of them, but I just found it amusing that a Mexican scientist would be reduced to doing research on Mexican food stuffs. It was subtle, but effective.

I'm pretty sure I'd seen this episode before, but I didn't remember it. It was worth watching for anyone who skipped it.

104 - Women of the Prehistoric Planet

This was the final movie of Season One. It was filmed last, although given an earlier production number. Go figure.

I really enjoy the extras in the DVD releases. There was a great interview with the lead actress. She makes it pretty clear that she was cajoled into taking part in this movie. The didn't even have costumes, unless they made their own.

In the movie, a convoy of ships has one crash on a planet. They turn around to to investigate and look for survivors. I enjoyed how the near-light speed travel was included, and the relative time passage was different (so the ship actually arrives years later).

There were lots of Gilligan's Island jokes. Also, the hero is named "Tang". He's not just for breakfast any more.

I'd have to say this is the first episode where the interstitial skits are starting to hold their own a bit.

Clay and Larry (farewell Larry!) sang their advertisement for "Clay and Lar's Flesh Barn" where the meat is so fresh they walk it out to you. Their best bit so far.

And I enjoyed the Isaac Asimov Literary Doomsday Device. They all grew enormous sideburns and started spouting off (like Asimov) when it detonated, only to discover later that the sideburns were only taped on.

My next viewing will begin Season 2. I'm looking forward to Frank's arrival.

EDIT:
How could I forget, the annoying engineer who regales the team while on an away mission with some unintelligible monologue, but punctuates with by flipping himself onto his back as he yells, "Hi Keeba!"

Episode 201 - Rocketship X M

I'm finally to Season 2 and the introduction of both Kevin Murphy as Tom Servo's voice/puppeteer, and Frank Coniff!

This is a Lloyd Bridges movie about a crew who leave on an exploration rocket mission to the moon. There is a mishap where the crew black out and wind up going to Mars (which turns out to be inhabited by cavemen-level beings) and then try to fly home. They run short of fuel and are unable to slow the decent, crashing into the Earth.

The pace of the riffs really matured over Season One, and you can see here that the crew had a more refined vision for the episodes. They also seemed more comfortable with increasingly obscure references sprinkled in with the more familiar ones.

I loved how Frank had a nametag and a sticker that said, "In Training" on his uniform. The bots nearly trick him into bringing the SOL down. But almost immediately the absence of Dr Larry Erhardt is experienced as a relief. I suspect Josh Weinstein was a gifted comic and writer for the show, but he never really had good presence on TV. I thought his efforts usually came off as forced and borderline annoying. His TV voice let him down, too.

But Frank immediately brings a type of calm charm. Sure, he's evil, but he's also loveable. Several times in this episode he is punished with a ripcord for something he's done. "Owwy owwy owwy owwy!"

Tom Servo has his voice back!

My favorite riff from this episode occurs when the lead scientist is giving a rundown of the mission, pre-launch, to the press. There is a cut-away chalk diagram of the rocket, which looks fairly phallic. Now, there are a lot of ways you could go with a soft-ball set-up like this. The genius of MST3K is that they found a way to appeal to young children and their parents, without ever making you feel like anyone was not appropriate as an audience. In a mimic of the scientists droning voice, "At this point the rocket becomes engorged with astronauts...."

My wife thought I was choking to death. I had to pause the movie since I was missing everything after this line. Could not stop chuckling.

The episode itself was probably average, but after Season One it stands out as a great promise for the coming season.

Episode 202 - The Sidehackers

First off, this is a pretty reprehensible movie. Its dark, and muddled, and ends on a big downer. And obviously sidehacking didn't exactly catch on.

Early on, I found myself completely charmed by Frank's reaction to the Slinky pet Joel presented for the invention exchange. (Man, how did they keep up with ideas for that?!) In stark contrast to Dr Erhardt, Frank showed this soft and warm side. He found them cute. It just really epitomizes his character, and it works so much better than the original tandem.

Also, the Sidehex Viewscreen moment when Mike comes dressed up as the villain, JC, with Frank there as Cootch (or is it Gootch?). "I WILL. I will DO it. I will do IT. I WILL do it." And again when it was time to push the button.

Joel had a wonderful take with, "Only Love Pads the Film". But who can forget the original song:
"Sidehacking is the thing to do! It doesn't hurt to have a low IQ." The camera work really brought the bots to life as a back-up band.

A few favorite riffs from the movie:
All the references to Rommel (the "protagonist") "You magnificent bastard, I read your book!"

There was also a great Spike Jones reference to the horserace with "Beetle Bum". I used to listen to the LP my father owned of Spike Jones, until I ruined it by gluing a spool to the center, threading a balloon through and making at a "hover craft". Why couldn't I have done that to the Ventures instead?

This isn't the last, but maybe one of the first examples where the crew took a basically unwatchable movie, with violence against women, bad stereotypes, and no moral compass....and turned it into a fun time that left me feeling like the world's not so bad a place.

203 - Jungle Goddess

It sure doesn't take long for Frank to establish a completely unique personality and much different direction than Professor Erhardt. I'm thoroughly enjoying the segments he's in as the character gets fleshed out.

This episode was preceded by an installment of a Bella Lugosi serial: The Phantom Creeps. Yeah, I think the double meaning in the title is apt. Joel and the bots really hammed it up with a bunch of Bella voice jokes. I always find these serials to be fast-paced and great fodder for the riffing.

The movie itself starred George Reeves (Superman and Commando Cody fame) in what can only be described as a painfully America-centric colonialist puff piece. Its sexist, racist, and one of the lead characters coldly guns down a native with no visible remorse at all, upon first coming across a group of them.

The bots don't miss a chance to point that out. For the rest of the movie, whenever a new character or animal appears, they ask, "Are you going to shoot that too?"

I loved a Monty Python reference about tigers in the jungle. It was just subtle enough to be rewarding when its recognized. But the highlight of the episode was the 2-minute recreation of the plot done in the style of the Honeymooners, complete with a fantastic little harmony piece to introduce it. In what other setting could you point out the problem with the racist, sexist, colonialist material in a way that makes everyone laugh and enjoy themselves. They don't ignore it. They address it directly.

I also found myself wondering what became of the 5 year old girl who wrote the letter they read on-air. She would be about 30 now.

Episode 204 - Catalina Caper

I've seen this one before. The movie itself was a formulaic beach mystery, with a lot of extraneous stuff that just wasn't working.

There's a cameo with Little Richard singing with a bunch of white kids dancing. And then another cameo from someone I don't think actually turned out to be famous or talented.

Frank does a reference to Blue Velvet. "Don't you look at me!" There was a musical number where the chorus is something like "at the party!" except that Joel and the Bots instead sing "The Nazi Party!". As the protagonists are all blonde arian-style youth, its pretty funny.

One of the things I love about MST3K is that when they make a sexual innuendo, its actually an innuendo. Younger viewers will be oblivious. Some girls walk by in swimsuits, the undercover inspector is pretending to be fishing with a gigantic wooden fishing poll. Joel says, "I have a pole with a capital O!" It just struck me really funny.

There was also a reference to David Lynch's Dune with Sting, "I WILL kill HIM!" I think they made the same reference in the prior episode.

Overall, this was not as funny as it seemed like it should have been. Reading the episode guide, I think Sidehackers was the current standard for a tough and painful episode....and a few castmembers said they liked this one less than that. The redeeming moment was Tom Servo's rendition of "Creepy Girl".

205 - Rocket Attack USA

I watched this in two installments, with about a 2 month delay in between the first half and the second half.

This was a pretty horrible propaganda film about the USSR making a pre-emptive attack on the USA and its entirely inept spy network.

The 2nd half proved to be funnier than the first half. That said, there weren't a lot of really memorable lines. There was a scene of rapid ready ICBMs rising to an erect position and one of the bots says something like, "Do you ever feel like this in the morning?" And Joel and the other bot all quickly agree, "Yeah." and quickly move on to the next joke.

Another funny move where a soldier opens a door, comes in and delivers some line about whatever is happening, then leaves. Joel interrupts him and says, "I think we've seen enough, send in the next audition please." Its true, the line was delivered so poorly it was distracting.

There was also more of the Bela Lugosi short serial The Phantom Creeps. I laughed a lot at this one, but the plot is unintelligible.

The most notable detail here is that this movie was the first to use the post-movie stinger. A blind guy walking on the sidewalk with the air raid sirens going off says, "Help me." in a really unemotional matter of fact tone.

206 - Ring of Terror

This was a plotless movie about some inappropriately cast medical students (all male) and their pathetic social lives with frustrated girlfriends, as they await the call to attend an autopsy (which apparently was really emotionally stressful). One guy gets hazed into getting the ring off the cadaver's finger afterward, and dies of fright because of a stupid cat.

Afterward the Mad Scientists surprise Joel with another The Phantom Creeps episode. I have to say, the plot went from confusing to flat-out opaque with that one.

There were about 100 jokes about how the students looked like they were in their 40s. I know its low-hanging fruit, but I get a big kick out of the gag where Joel pretends to speak the other half of a phone call. It makes me laugh every time.

There was also a nice Pink Panther "Cato!" reference.

I loved how Frank kind of stuck up for the bots because of how bad the movie was. During the invention exchange, Frank is sucking on nitrous oxide and makes a reference (edited) to Blue Velvet. I don't think I ever really understood how great Frank was and what a wonderful element he brought to the show, when I first watched it. He's a genius.

207 - Wild Rebels

This movie has some similarities to the horrible Sidehackers. No likable characters, and in the end a lot of people die in a shoot out. There was a kind of elephant gun shotgun that left a big white puff of smoke and loud boom, which always elicited a "Whoah!" from the bots.

Maybe the single funniest moment is when the crooks speed towards a roadblock and simply turn on the road immediately in front of it and drive away. The cops never saw it coming.

Tom points out that the sign on the Citrusville bank is made from black electrical tape on floor tiles, and it's true.

208 - Lost Continent

To me, this is the moment the show turned the corner and really hit it's stride. The jokes are at a good pace, with the right mix of pop references and observational humor. I feel like everything to this point was ramping up and now the show is fully operational, like the Death Star.

This film had a painfully long padding segment with rock climbing. "Even rock climbing movies don't have this much rock climbing!"

But I nearly blew a gasket laughing when the crew of heroes came across a large dinosaur footprint. "I've seen tracks like this before." Where? "In a museum."

Crow: "the Turd Museum in Citrusville", making reference to a scene with some old corroded cannons which DID look like giant turds in the Wild Rebels film. This is exactly why I'm watching these in order. I don't think my son had ever seen me laugh so hard.

209 - Hellcats

I watched this in two installments with several weeks interrupting them. I really don't think it hurt the experience. This movie is about the tough women of 60s biker gangs...kind of. It shares a lot of its tone, incoherent plot and despairing style with Sidehackers. Ross Hagan (Rommel in Sidehackers) also stars.

The host segments were made up of flashbacks to segments aired previously in earlier episodes. It felt kind of lazy and cobbled together. But even set that, I enjoyed them. Overall I think this episode was a bit of a step back from the prior couple.

One funny "adult" joke occurs when a woman was putting on her nylon stockings (before getting strangled by the villain a few moments later). They were rolled up like a condom, and the bots say, "she must practice 'safe walking'" and "she's putting on her Jimmy socks".

210 - King Dinosaur

First a short movie that says so much more about the culture that produced it than whatever it was intended to teach. A guy dies Ina car crash and is pit on trial in a posthumous traffic court, with his personal guardian ghost providing evidence. The best part was at the end when "the judge" implores each of the viewers to ask themselves if they are worthy to sit in judgement. Crow goes on a soliloquy where he mulls over this challenge seriously.

The movie was about a crew, consisting of two couples, flying to a newly discovered planet to prepare for colonization, only to discover it's inhabited by all manner of prehistoric creatures. In the end they detonate a nuclear bomb...I can't really recall why this was necessary.

There was a great reference to a mouse being a "pandimensional being" from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. There was probably more, but nothing super memorable.

211 - First Spaceship on Venus

This was a great episode. The movie involves a kind of United Nations multicultural mission to Venus after an alien ship crashes on the Earth. As they explore, the group discovers that Venus was about to launch a nuclear attack at Earth...but an accident detonated the weapon and destroyed the Venusian civilization.

I've allowed too much time to lapse to recall a lot of the jokes. I do remember a reference to Buck Rogers with a Twiki lookalike. "Bidi bidi bidi." I tend to appreciate when the bots are making fun of robots in the movies.

I would rate this as one of the better episodes up to this point. I laughed a lot.

212 - Godzilla vs Megalon

This is one of my favorite episodes. Rex Dart: Eskimo Spy!

The invention exchange includes Frank wearing a Fram air filter to look like Jordie LaForge. "Reading opens up a world of whimsy and wonder."

The movie itself is fairly entertaining, but Joel and the bots hit it out of the park with lots of great material. One of the villains looks like a Japanese Oscar Wilde.

The Jet Jaguar Fight song lyrics had me cracking up.
"His mother never really love him."
"He'd like to hit that kid with a rock."

Its a shame that the rights to the Godzilla movies were lost. Those two episodes (Godzilla) are the only ones I don't own, of those which were released commercially so far. And I don't think we'll ever see them released again.
