Thanks Ryan

I decided to keep a diary, as I wanted to log my progress and goals, and was inspired to make a geeklist after seeing Liam's diary.

Now using MyFitnessPal. Feel feel to friend me, same username as here

I'm going to track stats here, plus maybe post a picture or two for motivation.

My story...

I've been overweight most of my adult life, apart from a short stint when I lost ~80lbs and immediately put half of it back on (and then it crept almost all the way back...). I moved to Berlin, Germany, from Manchester, UK last year, and since moving, I've lost around 22lbs. Part of this is due to not being able to get the snacks I'm used to eating over here, but I've also been vegan since October 2014, as I was previously a vegetarian but going vegan in Berlin is so easy.

My current weight is 173lbs, and at 5'2" tall, this gives me a BMI of 31.6, which classifies as obese. So one of my first aims is to finish the challenge with an "overweight" BMI. My ideal healthy weight range is 101-139lbs, so this make take a little longer than the 8 week challenge, but it's a start

I'd also like to do more exercise. I'm currently writing my PhD thesis, due (hopefully) the end of July (they refused my full extension request, stressful...!) October (I'm waiting on an extension approval at the moment, which is rather stressful!) - so I don't get much time to exercise. So I've bought the Zumba fitness app for my tablet today, as I used to love doing that on the Wii (which I sadly left in England due to space), and it's easy to fit in 30 minutes of Zumba at home a few times a week.

I'd also like to restart doing yoga. A friend recently sent my a care package with two yoga DVDs in, so I've got no excuse! I may also do some running. I HATE running, but I've done it before, and it really does help me lose weight. Running isn't a definite though, due to time and enthusiasm!

I'd also like to sleep better. I'm waking up at 3am most days (probably PhD stress) and not sleeping doesn't help weight loss.

I already eat fairly healthy, and I've been restricting calories for a couple of months, and see no need to change there (I'm on 1200 a day - I may actually increase this with exercise as I give myself half the calories burned back, as per my Noom weight loss app).

Challenges: I have my Mum visiting for a week, and a couple of friends visiting for two weeks during the weight loss challenge. Maintaining good healthy eating, avoiding alcohol (although I rarely drink anyway), and keeping up with exercise will become harder.

I'm going to track my change in weight, body fat, waist size and BMI.

Stats as of today (23/03/15):

Weight: 173lbs
BMI: 31.6
Body Fat: 37%
Waist size: 33.5"

Starting stats (30/03/15):

Weight: 173lbs
BMI: 31.6
Body Fat: 36.9%
Muscle: 31.3% (from week 2)
Waist size: 33.25"

Finishing stats (25/05/15):

Weight: 156.6lbs
BMI: 28.6
Body Fat: 34.5%
Muscle: 32.0%
Waist size: 30.875"

Aims:

d10-1 Zumba app - 3-5 times a week, starting on the short (~30min) routines till fitness improves.
d10-2 Yoga - starting doing yoga again, couple of times a week.
d10-3 Sleep better! Hopefully the exercise will help.
d10-4 Lose 6% of my weight (~10.5lbs / 4811 meeples!).
d10-5 Stick to 1200 calories, increasing on days with exercise.
d10-6 Cut back on snacking.
d10-7 Maintain healthy eating through two lots of visitors during the 8 weeks.
d10-8 Running? Maybe...
d10-9 Keep up with PhD write up whilst doing all this!
d10-0 Finish with an "overweight" BMI (max 164lbs).

Starting pictures on left (game shelf in background!), taken a couple of days into the challenge (01/04/15). 8 week final images on right.

Was a bit dubious about posting the last one, but I think it shows my weight loss best, so I had a bit of courage and went for it!

Game Choice - Bought this as an easy to learn game to play with my Mum whilst she was over last week. Went down a treat

d10-4 Reversed a mid week significant gain to lose this week, albeit only 1.2lbs.

d10-8 Completed week 2 doyouyouga.com beginner's meditation programme.

d10-0 Started level 3 Headspace meditation programme.

Goals for this week:

d10-3 Complete week 3 of doyouyoga.com beginner's meditation programme.
d10-4 Complete level 3 Headspace meditation programme.

d10-6 Complete 12 hours zumba in a month achievement on my Zumba Dance app.
d10-7 Drop under 12 stone/168lbs. Preferably 2lb under!

Plan for next week:

d10-1 Try the doyouyoga.com Yoga Shread programme.
d10-2 Finish the doyouyoga.com beginner's programme.
d10-3 Finish the doyouyoga.com beginner's meditation programme.

Thoughts:

3 weeks in and I've lost 4.8lbs, but the loss is slowing each week: week 1 2lbs, week 2 1.6lbs, week 3 1.2lbs - and I'm really having to fight for this weight loss, and I have 5.58lbs to go at this slowing rate. Beginning to wonder if I'll make the 6% loss, but I did wonder from the beginning, as my best loss is usually 1lb/week, which would be 8lbs most over the challenge, but I need to lose 10.38lbs for 6% loss. I have to wonder why my weight loss is always so slow... It's annoying, but at least being in the challenge stops me from giving up. I've been dieting since mid-January now, and lost 17.2lbs since then, so although the weight loss is slow, at least it's going in the right direction. Plus my muscle percentage seems to be going up I've now been exercising for 4 weeks too, and feel that that is affecting my waistline, if not the scales.

Calories Consumed:

20/04/15 - 1155/1220.
21/04/15 - 1134/1660.
22/04/15 - 1547/1680.
23/04/15 - 1162/1670.
24/04/15 - 1271/1630.
25/04/15 - 1220/1650.
26/04/15 - 1176/1250.

Exercise:

20/04/15 - 12 minutes yoga (mild), 31 minutes meditation.
21/04/15 - 28 minutes yoga (painfully intense!), 65 minutes zumba (moderate), 26 minutes meditation.
22/04/15 - 42 minutes yoga (moderate), 75 minutes zumba (moderate), 26 minutes mediation.
23/04/15 - 32 minutes yoga (moderate) 66 minutes zumba (moderate), 28 minutes meditation.
24/04/15 - 42 minutes yoga (moderate), 66 minutes zumba (moderate), 30 minutes meditation.
25/04/15 - 5 miles walking, 42 minutes yoga (moderate), 26 minutes meditation.

d10-2 Continue Focus Headspace meditation programme.

Thoughts:

Halfway through the challenge, and I finally feel like I might make the 6%. Worked my butt off this week - I tried to stick to around 1200 calories - so didn't add half my calories back from exercise than I normally do. I was tired, hungry, grumpy, lethargic, and struggled to concentrate (not good when writing a doctoral thesis!) so not sure it's something I can do every week, but it gave me the boost I needed with a 3lb drop, and 0.5" from my waist. Managed to stick to around 1200 for 6 days - one day I was just so hungry that I added half from exercise back, before I became awful to live with! I honestly think that my body was telling me that it needed more calories if I'm going to do that amount of exercise (I'm doing about 1.5-2hours 5 days a week, with 30 minutes yoga on my "rest" days), so I may go back to adding half calories back, but nice to have a large drop in lbs (for me!) for a week to keep the motivation on track.
What's even more impressive than my loss is that my husband gained 2lb this week - we normally both either lose or gain weight at the same time, which isn't so useful when we're both wanting to go the opposite way! This is especially good as there's now under 2 stone difference between us in weight (I'm the heavier), which means we can go climbing again. He could have belayed me with the larger weight difference, but would have had to use a weight bag, which is always embarrassing (for me personally) when I'm the heavier one.
My main hope for next week is that I'll drop to an "overweight" BMI. I hate being "obese" - the word itself is demotivating and derogatory to me. Being "overweight" means I'm on the home stretch, even if it is still a long way to go to "normal", whatever that means!

Calories Consumed:

27/04/15 - 1160/1300.
28/04/15 - 1176/1450.
29/04/15 - 1175/1280.
30/04/15 - 600/1360.
01/05/15 - 1199/1300.
02/05/15 - 1199/1380.
03/05/15 - 1184/1550.

Exercise:

27/04/15 - 8 minutes yoga (mild), 10 minutes yoga (intense), 10 minutes yoga shred (intense), 32 minutes meditation.
28/04/15 - 33 minutes yoga (moderate), 34 minutes yoga (intensive), 12 minutes yoga shred (intensive), 36 minutes meditation.
29/04/15 - 6 minutes yoga (mild), 10 minutes yoga (intense), 10 minutes yoga shred, 20 minutes meditation.

d10-4 Do the new 30 minute free class on doyouyoga.com.
d10-5 Continue Focus Headspace meditation programme.
d10-6 Stick to calories and exercise whilst I have two foodie guests staying for a couple of weeks.

Plan for next week:

d10-1 Continue doyouyoga.com 30 day challenge programme.
d10-2 Continue Focus Headspace meditation programme.
d10-3 Stick to calories and exercise whilst I have two foodie guests staying for a couple of weeks.

Thoughts:

Well I never thought I'd hit the 6% barrier in 8 weeks, let alone 5, so feeling rather chuffed today Plus I'm not obese anymore! So now, for the rest of the challenge, I'm hoping to just keep losing a steady 2lb a week - I've never achieved that rate before on a "normal" sustainable diet (I'm normally 4lb/month max), so it'd be nice if it continued to the end. That would mean a 16lb total loss in 8 weeks, which is over a stone, and something to be proud of!
I have friends staying from today till a week on Thursday, and they like eating out, so this is going to be my biggest challenge yet. Normally I'm ok eating out, as I only eat at veggie/vegan places, but these guys are meat-eaters so that may be a problem. Vegan food at "normal" restaurants tends to be either a salad (yeah, cheers for reinforcing the rabbit stereotype) or calorie-laden (chips, chips, chips), so can be a struggle. Berlin is a bit better on that side though.
Didn't do my Zumba this week, partly as I wanted to see if 10 minutes yoga shred (intensive, short burst exercise) could really replace an hour Zumba. Well I lost 3lb last week doing Zumba, and 2.8lbs this week doing the shred, so the signs are good - but I did also have a stomach upset for a few days, so I'm not entirely sure.
Kept to my calories this week, and didn't add half back from exercise - that seems to be helping.
Treated myself to a paid online yoga course on doyouyoga.com as my PhD hard work reward for the week (normally it's a game, but I figured my PhD goals reward can be something fun exercise, and my weight loss reward can be a game - that way everything feeds back into everything else ), so looking forward to starting that after the 30 day challenge. That coincides with finishing this BGG challenge, so it'll keep me going after the challenge - unless we have another challenge here *grins*
Also went climbing. Was a bit disappointed in that my grade has dropped, but I had a stomach bug and had done a lot of yoga, so maybe that affected it. But the plus side is that I've lost enough weight to feel comfortable climbing again, and that my husband doesn't need to use a weight bag to belay me.
My new goal for the challenge is to get to 156lbs, which is another 6.4lbs in 3 weeks. Won't be easy, but it's possible. This weight is 11st2, which is the weight at which I first went on a diet at 18. It would be nice to have my 18 year old body back even if it is still overweight! But at that stage, I'll definitely feel like my long-term target (126lbs) is possible.

Thoughts:

This week has been a bit up and down. After making my 6% last week, and becoming overweight (rather than obese), I gained over 1lb and went back under 6% and into obese... Seems rather odd as I'd actually achieved the 6% early in the previous week, shortly after that week's weigh in. Still, I ended the week slightly lower than last week, so all's not lost! It's been a good week overall, as I have friends staying, and we've played lots of games. Plus, I won a yoga course in a competition on doyouyoga.com, so I've got plenty yoga lined up for the coming weeks. Was also pleased to hear that there might be another challenge after this I find it much easier to stay motivated losing weight as a group than alone. And this diary has made sure I don't stop trying, as it's rather public!
It's not all sad on the weight loss front, as I really feel that I've lost inches this week, particularly around my thighs and calves (and a bit around my middle) as my jeans are much looser. This is the second pile of clothes that I've had to give away / donate to charity during this challenge, as they're too big now:

I honestly feel that I've lost more inches per pounds on this challenge than I ever have before, with doing the yoga daily, and Zumba early on. So thanks for all keeping me motivated

Thoughts:

This past couple of weeks have been a weightloss rollercoaster! I've been fluctuating by up to 2lbs a day. I have no idea why. I've practically cut out all snacking, and I'm eating more fruit and salads since the weather got warmer. I'm guessing it's a water fluctuation, but it's still annoying. But into the last week of the challenge with positive thoughts - if I can lose 3lbs I'll be my lightest in years, and the same weight I was at 18, when I first went on a diet. Good luck for the last week everyone!

Completed Goals from challenge:

d10-1 Zumba app - 3-5 times a week, starting on the short (~30min) routines till fitness improves. ACHIEVED Changed this for more yoga and yoga shred in the last 4 weeks of challenge, as it got a bit repetitive!
d10-2 Yoga - starting doing yoga again, couple of times a week. ACHIEVED Done yoga daily for 8 weeks.
d10-3 Sleep better! Hopefully the exercise will help. ACHIEVED Sleeping through most nights now, probably a combination of yoga, meditation, and eating better.

d10-8 Running? Maybe... Oopsies! Think I did enough other things though
d10-9 Keep up with PhD write up whilst doing all this! ACHIEVED Working hard on PhD again. The exercise, meditation, plus my faculty listening to me and giving me an extension helped
d10-0 Finish with an "overweight" BMI (max 164lbs). ACHIEVED 156.6lbs finishing weight.

Ongoing plan:

d10-1 Keep going now the challenge is over!
d10-2 Aim to lose 2lb per week.
d10-3 Keep up the yoga, cardio, and meditation.
d10-4 Keep sticking to 1200 calories.
d10-5 Keep indoor climbing once a week.

Thoughts:

What a challenge! Brilliant support from everyone, and we've all done really well. Personally, I've established a daily exercise routine, which I've never maintained for so long ever in my life! And I've upped my weight loss rate from an average of 1lb a week (I was already dieting since January) to 2lb a week. Can't wait for the next challenge
