This Geeklist chronicles some of the many games played at this weekly meeting of the Columbus Area Boardgaming Society.

The Columbus Area Boardgaming Society (CABS) is a club dedicated to boardgaming in central Ohio. The club started as a group of 15 friends back in 1997. Since then, CABS has grown to over 400 members with meetings almost every weekend. Our members play everything from Eurogames to Wargames to light family games. Our club also maintains a library of over a thousand games, which members can "check-out"a just like any public library.

3p with my wife Gina and Christi. I still can't decide if Aquasphere is fun or just interesting. It's an evil game. At first glance, it looks somewhat complicated. Then you realize that the graphic design is a trick, it's actually pretty simple. Then you realize that, no, the game hates you and actively strives against everything you do. It may be simple, but it's hard. Ergh.

Gina beat Christi on the tie breaker. I did... poorly.

The first game, I had all the colors and won. The second game, I was missing a color and finished 3rd out of 4.

I don't play with 2 players that often. In the second game, I was trying to count scores to see if I should end the game or not. I thought I was comfortably ahead, so I did empty the third pile to end it. I miscounted and it was closer than I thought, but I still won by 2.

Fun little game with beautiful card art. The title is close to true... except it should be 8-minute (per player) Empire Legends. This one makes me want to try the original. Gives Tiny Epic Kingdoms a run for dominance in the miniscule empire builder game category. Thanks Dan and Logan for playing.

These days there aren't many games I buy after playing it once. The Golden Ages was one of them. I played it for the second time Saturday night, got my butt kicked. . .and know I made the right move buying it. You basic 90-120 minute civ building game and IMO it works.

Not sure which edition we played, but it was with all the expansions. Thanks to Bear for bring 2 more victims into the TI continuum. I have wanted to play this game forever and finally understand its lasting appeal. No doubt it's a time grinder, but it was totally worth it. Things got interesting towards the end, but as it was approaching 5am, we decided to call it a draw (and honestly I, inexperienced as I am, felt like the win could have gone to anybody). Thanks Bear for teaching/playing, thanks Amos and Logan for playing!

My wife visited CABS primarily because our friend Christi also showed up to play games. Christi owns Wally 1ed and had never played. I muddled through translating the German event cards and taught the game.

I own and prefer Wally 2ed (and Shogun) for strategic reasons + expansions, but I actually really like Wally 1ed as well. The event card deck is much bigger. It's a bit swingier since it targets specific regions. But it's also got some cool, positive events that the later editions lack. And the titles of the events are more thematic (if you translate them). The graphic design also has a certain quaint charm. I love the icons for the actions.

It was fun. I won by a little bit.
