About GCL mb GCL Gelato (yum) mb Subscription Thread

What is a Geek Chat League?

A Geek Chat League is a weekly discussion-group format for people who love gaming and enjoy talking about games. It is intended to foster depth and familiarity, producing engaging content and worthwhile interaction. Members get to know one another, establish shared interests, and generally develop a friendly and productive environment.

Of necessity, each division of GCL is kept relatively small (typically between 12-16 members, though individual divisions may incline one way or the other). A tight-knit discussion group tends to function more smoothly than a free-for-all. It allows individuals to be heard and understood, and for each participant to keep up and enjoy multiple topics as the week progresses. The format is geeklist-based, and lists are not published to the BGG front page.

Policy: If you're a lurker or have otherwise discovered GCL Gelato, feel free to read along with us and see what the members have to say on everything under the sun. If you have a constructive comment or something else you think would add to the discussion, consider posting it — if it's helpful, respectful, and polite to the discussion group as a whole, as well as to its individual members.

mb next up!

This Week - Numbers!

I love numbers - my mind is constantly taking numbers and manipulating them, factoring them, seeing what the relationship between one number and another is. It's not easy to explain, it's just something I do. And if nothing else, it makes me handy to have around to calculate odds and tips.

So I thought I would ask about numbers...

First, a song to help set the mood.

This game describes my state of mind! Let me describe one mind game. I was 11 in 1973. I began to play with that number, 1973 (a prime number, incidentally) - I would just halve it, then halve it again, then again... 986 1/2; 493 1/4; 246 5/8; 123 5/16, 61 21/32. Etc. Why? Because. Or if I see a license plate I automatically play with the numbers. For example, if plates have 549 I instantly know that's 61 x 9 and naturally 183 x 3 (factors: 61x3x3). Then I start to count by 549s... 1098... 1647... etc. Why? Because.

How do you feel about numbers and math? Do you love math/playing with numbers? Hate it? Can't figure out a 10% discount? Use a calculator to calculate combat odds when you have 20 factors attacking a defense of 10?

Numbers mean a lot of things to people, not always logical. I loved the number 7 when I was seven years old. When I turned eight and my sister hit seven, I remember thinking to myself that I couldn't like the number seven for as long as my sister was seven. (Don't ask why, there is zero logic to it, and I do love my sis!)

I also dated someone for a while who was into numerology and the like - she'd assign numerical values to letters and based on my name being Wendell, made certain conclusions about me and my fates (which would be different somehow if my name were spelled Wendel or Wendall...). I tolerated it because it was amusing, but I thought it was insane.

Nowadays, I don't really have any number that is special or meaningful to me, or particularly lucky or unlucky.

What about you? Lucky numbers? Special numbers? Sentimental favorites - you love the number 31 because you love ice cream? Hate the number 10 because Wayne Rooney wears it?

Then there are games. Many games use numbers; some games are described as being particularly mathy, i.e. involving lots of calculations.

How do you feel about mathy games? Love 'em? Tolerate them? Flee them in favor of Scrabble and abstracts? Tell us more!

Quite a few games include numbers in their titles, though that doesn't make them mathy games necessarily. Some of those numbers are from dates, as in the famous 18xx series of rail games - which have a LOT of math in them, from what I understand. Other number titles are more descriptive, such as in 7 Ages, which covers seven ages of history and if you don't like the game (I love it), might feel like it takes seven ages to play.

What is your favorite game with a number in the title in which the number is a YEAR? What is your favorite game with a number in the title in which the number is something OTHER than a year?

I forgot to mention this game, APBA Pro Baseball. I got it when I was 11 or 12, and played many games and kept stats for many years. All on paper. Figuring out batting averages and earned run averages for players (without a calculator, with pencil & paper and later in my head) was a major boost to my math skills, and is why I still know that 7/27 is approximately .259 and 4/13 is approximately .308.

Do you feel any game has helped you become better at math?

One more example of a number I like just because it's fun to play with. 37. It's a prime number, and again prime numbers are inherently interesting. Also, when you start multiplying 37, you get cool numbers like 111, 222, 777, etc.

This kind of exemplifies my odd habit of playing with numbers. Do you have an odd or quirky habit that you are willing to share?

A good week for wargaming. On Friday I had a double-header. First a game of Hellenes: Campaigns of the Peloponnesian War. We played the 431* scenario, I was Athens. At first I fell a bit behind as anti-Athenian revolts erupted all over the map (and I had a streak of poor dice on besieging the ingrates). but mid-game I'd recovered and inflicted a Helot revolt on Sparta a couple of times, and I managed to pull ahead for a comfortable victory.

Then Unhappy King Charles!. I was the Royalists this time. The game was pretty even all the way through. A brief scare when Cromwell and the New Model Army came up and threatened Charles, but he ran away and lived to fight another day - then the Duke of Lorraine showed up to protect his fellow royal, and my generals in the south of England caused enough problems for Parliament that I won.

On Saturday, our Empires in Arms session resumed. There's math in that game too - we had a couple of HUGE battles which eventually saw the Prussians crushed and defeated (summer 1807). Losses are expressed as a percentage of the attacker's force, so you do thing like calculate 15% of 124 factors (18.6, BTW) all the time.

Emailing games continued - 1989: Dawn of Freedom (another number game and a particularly good year) and Thunder Alley and Clash of Monarchs.

*a prime number, BTW

Introduced a friend to A:N. We played 3 games and had a great time. I'm not a fanatic fan of the game but I've decided that it will be the only LCG/TCG I want to own.
We kept sides betwenn the games and it ended up being very much a learning experience for me, too. I had played previously but not really all that much. I think I'll add in the first cycle of expansion packs and then call it. That should suffice for the occasional game and some very light deckbuilding.

7   Patchwork - Still enjoying this one!
9   Doodle Quest - Just picked up Loony Quest, I was surprised at how much more complicated it is!
5   Progress: Evolution of Technology - I had to laugh at the flowchart in this one. It is nearly completely solitary, with minimal interaction. The art is ugly. But I kind of had fun with it, mainly because, like many eurogamers, I like building an engine. Still, like most KS games, I believe this would actually be an exciting game with further development.
9   One Night Ultimate Werewolf Daybreak x2 - My natural play style (lie a lot until I eventually break down and tell the truth, regardless of my role) backfired on me, as some players wouldn't believe me. Boy who cried wolf, I guess.
8   One Night Ultimate Werewolf x3
7   Melee - Most gamers would scoff at the battle resolution mechanism in this game (put coins in your hand, have opponent guess the number of coins), but here it works wonderfully. I found it hilarious.
5   Abyss - Not a fan of the art. It's kind of funny how elaborate the art is, yet how thin the backstory/mythos is.
7   Wok Star - Much easier than I remembered. Fun, but would like it to be more difficult.
3  Space Cadets - I should like this type of game, but the fact that it can last up to two hours absolutely kills any promise of fun in my book. I am surprised that this is so popular.
9   Dominion: Prosperity - Had probably the most boring assortment of cards  6   Coup: Reformation
 8   Coup
 9   Saint Petersburg

I'm currently in Northern California on vacation. I'm reading a bit, and looking forward to watching the documentary "Going Clear" tonight.

*edited to update all the games I had not rated. Too many N/As!

x3 Yomi
x1 Dominare

So, quite week here. I am almost back on top of things when it comes to school work. I'm looking forward to really plowing into my dissertation this week.

Game time had the usual Pax/everything else divide. As some of you guys saw, I posted the rules to Pax last week, which is excited. More exciting still, I sent Phil all of the artwork for the cards. I'm sure there will be some corrections and whatnot before final submission, but they are 99.5% there. Phil also ran a bunch of plays of Pax over the weekend and reported that they went smoothly and everyone had a great time. He's excited. I'm excited. I have a feeling it will be a very long summer as I anxiously await the first copies. All the same, it was nice to have so many of my feelings validated by Phil's report. We've worked hard and I think we've made a damn fine game. I can't wait to get it to a wider audience.

I feel even better about the game after playing a game called Dominare at a local store's open gaming night. There were some bizarre similarities between my game and Dominare. They are both political games that are tableau builders where played cards allow you to interact with others and place pieces on a map. But...it just wasn't that good. The rules were a mess, the scoring was tedious, and the whole thing seemed uninspired which is too bad because, after all, I like the genre. I'd play it again, just to explore it a little more, but I think that there are much better area majority games on the market which done more with less.

Cati and I have also started playing Yomi again. What a great game--I'm already looking forward to tonight's games.

I've also started my next game project. I'll probably start getting serious about it this summer, but I wanted to start reading up on the topic and doing some thinking now. Its an economic game which is going to direct its energies to areas of economic activity that often get left out of games, such as trade deficits, government regulation, and both legal and illegal trade. The working title is Heaven's Gate: The Opiuim Wars and the Opening of China.

Right now the design is something like Bootleggers + Locomotive Werks + Greed Inc + Pandemic. A lot of the game will be in real-time and the game systems emphasize the operational limitations of international businesses in the early 19th century. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of game emerges.

Weekend Round-Up

This past week, these games were played face-to-face:
None.

This past week, these games started:
None.

This past week (through date of posting), these games continued:
Burnside Takes Command, Scenario 2 v. Carsten (100-Game-Play Challenge!)
Space Empires 4X v. 4-Player (GCL Gelato!)
Stonewall Jackson's Way II, Scenario 6 v. Patrick (Advanced Game!)
GCACW: Atlanta is Ours, Scenario 1 v. Scott (Playtest!)
GCACW: Atlanta is Ours, Scenario 2 v. Patrick (Playtest!)
GCACW: Atlanta is Ours, Scenario 3 v. Carsten (Playtest!)
The Great Invasion: Gettysburg v. Judd
1830: The Coalfields v. 5-Player (GCL Gelato!)

This past week, these games concluded:
Pax Porfiriana v. 5-Player (GCL Gelato!)
The Hunters Tournament (GCL Gelato!)

This past week, these games/accessories were acquired:
Three Kingdoms (Redux)

This week, these games are on my radar:
Forbidden Stars
Three Kingdoms Redux

This past week, these interesting things happened in my games and my life:

1 ---> Solitaire Gaming / Miniatures Painting.

(a) Crossfire Miniatures Painting. I started re-doing the belts and pouches and black on the German infantry, and decided against it. I *like* the brown straps and pouches, so I decided to leave it. They obviously look like German soldiers. I only have a few soldiers left to paint, and they only need the barrels of their guns painted. I may finish that tonight and start basing them! We will see.

(b) Next Steps. I still intend to move on to the Americans, next. Then terrain. I am still sticking with an April (for U.S. troops) and May (for terrain). Then I will tackle another project . . . which will be either my 6mm American Civil War armies or the BattleLore base game. Leaning toward BattleLore at this time. But whenever my Star Wars: Armada set arrives, I will taking a hiatus to paint the TIE and X-Wing squadrons.

2 ---> Family. We are making the final push toward potty training of my son this week . . . we have a twelve-day break from pre-school, and so far he has done really well. Hopefully it sticks and we can drop the diapers just in time for Baby 3 to arrive. Incidentally, we learned that the baby was a boy. Speaking of break-throughs, Stella has started "officially" being able to walk. She's a little unsteady, but can make it across the twenty feet wide gap between the dining room table and the coffee table/couch, so we are declaring her officially walking. It will be some weeks before she is a "fully operational walking baby". It dawned on me today that I will miss all this, someday.

3 ---> On-Going PBEM Game Notes. 1830: The Coalfields continues, but slowly, with Ron - despite setbacks - taking a huge lead early on (an uncatchable one?) . . . Dan continues to trash stock left and right, laying waste where he can . . . to what end I am not sure. The game is still early enough that it's anyone's game, but if I had to lay money on anyone now, it would be Ron. Pax Porfiriana finally ended, with a rather anti-climactic, yet still well-deserved "most money" win to Roger. Space Empires 4X has been slow this week with nothing significant happening. In The Great Invasion I have been waiting for Judd to get back to me for over a week. The Hunters tournament is not over for everyone, but it is for me! I was sunk somewhere in the Atlantic in February of 1942. I continue to shake an envious, covetous, fist at Roger's astounding luck.

4 ---> Atlanta is Ours! Carsten was finally forced off the hex he was defending, but has essentially made a Union victory (for me) a near impossibility. A run of extremely good luck can pull off the win, though. We will see. I always have fun against Carsten because I feel that he and I are at comparable skill levels, which makes the game interesting without being frustrating. Scott and I had some movement in our game in which his Union corps vaped my cavalry . . . I mainly stayed put to let him run through the combat sequence, which was very clearly unfavorable to me by orders of magnitude. He finally is knocking on the doors of Resaca and I am hoping for Hood to show up! Patrick and I are well-into Turn 2 of our scenario. Union Corps leader Hooker has proven to be useless in this scenario - all his attacks have failed. My early successes have been reversed. On the crucial rolls, the Union just can't win. We will continue to see if I am able to get a little lucky in what remains of our game. It is not lost, yet.

5 ---> Weather!. The see-saw swing of the weather continues. Today is utterly crappy: windy, 37 F, and drizzling. We went to an Easter

6 ---> Forbidden Stars. I am not much for Gamesworkshop stuff - not really. I purchased Space Hulk because I think it is a fine game, and I have tried a few of their computer games, which were "okay". I also own Horus Heresy mainly because I got it cheap. But this game looks like the first game from 40K that I *really want* to play. At least, I want to read the rules and see if there is a game underneath the beautiful veneer. Corey is on the design/devel team, so I am hopeful. Some players are already being compared to Starcraft in design . . . which I have never played.

7 ---> Three Kingdoms Redux. Thanks going out to Wendell (I think) for writing about this game. I checked it out, and it seems like a "wargame" that might be able to talk some family members into trying. So I ordered it. The game is here, and it is really nice looking. I plan on looking at it tonight before starting the bases for the Germans.

More to come? Not sure.

Edits: None.

I'm a klutz. Yesterday at a picnic I was retrieving a disc from a pond when i got cut by a reed. It's not dangerous but really bad--I need extensive surgery today to rebuild tendons & arteries in one toe. The surgeon thinks the nerves may be toast. As the drugs are kicking in, this may conclude my posts for today.

Oh yeah, I played a great game of Goa last week. And some really fun turns of 1989.

This is the week that was:

 X   Fire in the Lake
 8   Dixit
8   Castles of Mad King Ludwig
 8   Thunder Alley
 8   Scrabble
X   The Hunters: German U-Boats at War, 1939-43

The monthly COIN club met and we started but did not finish a full campaign game of FitL. I'm playing the ARVN, the one side I didn't want at the beginning (feeling that I kinda grokked how the others worked based on limited exposure), but I was doing better than I'd hoped. We got through three Coup cards.

The new Dixit expansion arrived and I love love love the art on these cards. Best of all five decks. IMO.

I continue my stupid good luck in The Hunters. I'm tempted to just avoid all contact the next patrol out since my luck is bound to run out, especially not being able to get through Biscay without aircraft it seems...

This past week (through date of posting), these games continued:
Pax, 1989, Thunder Alley

This past week, these games concluded:
None

This past week, these games/accessories were acquired:
I'm embarrassed to say that I forgot I'd ordered the latest Dixit expansion, Dixit: Daydreams, but it arrived last week and the Kelda's little eyes lit up and we of course immediately played it after dinner.

Today I happened to be at Imperial Hobbies (after a lovely group dim sum lunch) and I picked up two things.

First was the Sails of Glory: Game Mat, which I can use for other things. I actually have a SoG starter kit, but although my wife and I have both looked at it a few times, we haven't actually broken it out. Now have mat will travel. Or so goes the theory!

Second was Crusader Rex. It's one of the few block games I haven't tried from Columbia, and they had a copy on for the sweet clearance price of $30, so how I could I leave it behind?

This week, these games are on my radar:
Thunderbirds. The KS just ended and I'm looking forward to getting my copy later this year.

Wings of Glory: WW1 Giants of the Sky – German Zeppelin Staaken R.VI. Another KS campaign that is sucking money from my wallet. They have the base game with all the rules and other bits as extras for less than I've seen anywhere else, so I'm sucking it up and pledging for the full meal deal.

Castles of Mad King Ludwig: Secrets. This is a must get expansion for this great little castle building game.

This past week, these interesting things happened in my games and my life:

My new job is entertaining so far. The paperwork for the newer, permanent, job is likely stuck in the new enterprise HR system rollout. Either way I have a new desk, I've met some great new people, and life is good.

The Kelda expressed great interest in trying out an RPG style game so my wife and I started playing Legends of the Ancient World: The Sewers of Redpoint. Legends is a light RPG. Three stats, 3d6 vs. stat to resolve most things, and the various modules are paragraph driven meaning you can play solo or as a group without a game master per se. The pleasant surprise was that my wife really liked it too, and my daughter cannot wait to play MORE. I'm glad I have, well, all of the modules from Dark City Games.

 9   Combat Commander: Europe x6

Not much playing this week - except on Saturday, when Arno, one of my wargaming buddies, visited and we finished our playings of Combat Commander: Battle Pack #5 – Fall of the West. We scheduled a new meeting in two weeks, and want to do the same with Combat Commander: Battle Pack #2 – Stalingrad.

After that many plays of this game, I'm now really fascinated by it and I'm really looking forward to play even more games. I also wrote a little review about it: “CC still means Close Combat” or “Does a Squad Leader outrank a Combat Commander?”

Andrea and I decided to buy a new TV set. We want one that can connect to our WLAN, so that we will be able to watch Youtube videos and other stuff (there are many fine music live acts available). We will go for a bigger screen and that meaans we have to re-organize the basement area, where our TV set is located. We did that on Sunday afternoon. While doing this, I re-located tons of old books from the basement to our sleeping room on the 2nd floor. Books - in huge quantities - are really heavy! I now have a blue-purple colored shoulder, where the straps of the IKEA bag cut in that I used to carry all these tomes upstairs! I also now have two huge bags of Star Trek books that I used to buy and read twenty years ago ... I don't know what to do with them; simply throwing them away seems so wrong. The local library is not interested.

However, I now have much more room for new games! Yeah! Essen 2015, here I come!!! meeple

A very good week of plays. Some new ones in their too with Samurai Spirit and Dead of Winter. I'm not convinced about DoW yet but these learning games were brutal and the background environment was noisy and didn't make for a good time. So jury is still out.

If I ever needed proof that I am prepared I am a teacher that is prepared to make sacrifices for my students...look no further than my willingness to learn, teach and play the above Saddleclub game. gulp

The boy learned Lords of Waterdeep this week and liked it...so they have begun their journey along the worker placement path.

Looking forward to Week 3 of the Hunters Competition in a few days time.

skippen's Week(s) that Was/Were:

Face 2 Face Games:
Star Wars: Imperial Assault -- not bad, not great. I had a good time playing, and I look forward to continuing the campaign, but I have no need to add this to my collection.
Seven Swords -- a rough first play-through, but enough there that I want to try it again. For some reason it reminded me of Stronghold.
Glass Road -- broke this out with my wife. She enjoyed it(which is good considering she gave it to me for my birthday). I think this may be one of Uwe's better games.
Advanced Squad Leader x3 -- Rocky Mountain Rumble 2015 was this weekend. I played three games of ASL this weekend. BFP 102, Tolstoy Woods--came down to the final die roll, and sadly I lost, and J155, It's Hardly Fair, also came down to the final die roll, lost as well. Lastly, WO3, Counterattack at Careten. I lost this one as well, but sadly it ended on a sour note when my opponent just up and left and said I won. It was surprising (as he won), as we have played lots of game together (he taught me ASL), but I forgot to note my AT gun's CA, and, well, he threw a fit. Really soured a good gameday.

PBEM/Web (started):
Thunder Alley -- with GCL Gelato

PBEM (in progress):
The Castles of Burgundy -- So.Damn.Slow.
The Rose King -- neither of know what to do, and neither of us are reading the rules.
Thunderstone
Suburbia -- still not loving this. I think I am not a fan.
Roads to Gettysburg
Great Campaigns of the American Civil War -- Atlanta is Ours playtest.

PBEM (finished):
Carcassonne -- got crushed in a quick 2-player game.
Pax Porfiriana -- with GCL Gelato. Never got any momentum in this game.

Acquisitions from the Collection:
Hakkaa Päälle!: ASL Module 14

Departures from the Collection
N/A

On the nightstand (currently reading):
The Murder of Roger Aykroyd, by Agatha Christie (really need to finish this).

In the life and Times of skippen: Not too much. I really need to get going on my entry for Reaper Con. It is creeping up (April 30). I am more done than not, but at the same time there is a LOT to do. My wife is back to her "normal" but odd work schedule, so we again only have Saturdays off together, so Sunday has opened up for gaming and other stuff, but the first weeks are always odd, and I never seem to do much other than clean the house and watch TV out of guilt for some reason. I hope to get some ASL in on a Sunday sometime, but Sunday is often a hard day for folks to game.

Howdy Gelati!

 7.5   Tokaido x2
9   Castles of Mad King Ludwig

PBF games - picking them back up. 1830: Railways & Robber Barons - I'm not even sure how I'm still in this game, but it won't be long now I'm sure. I do feel that I've gotten enough sense of the game now that I will do better next time. Space Empires: 4X has been fun. I finally got Chris out of my yard.

Thanks everyone again for your patience while I was working through Meeplecon and the aftermath week. I think I've finally got caught up on my sleep, so that's always good!

Got in two plays of Tokaido for my 2x2x12 challenge. That was fun Really neat, light game. Bauza has been doing a great job with these elegant and fun light designs.

Also got to play Castles of Mad King Ludwig finally, and it was good fun. I like the sense that you're actually building something that you get while playing. Replayability is definitely present. This one wins high marks for me

Other than that, it was a pretty quiet week. Not a lot of games, but I'm making up for that this week I hope.

My son got to watch Aliens a couple of weeks ago, and then Predator last week, so this week we are going to watch AVP (His request!), so I'm excited about that. It's fun that he's really getting into some movies that I like a lot, and the fact that the Aliens Legendary game is one that he really likes helps too!

I am on the waiting list for a BGG.con ticket (Thanks for the link Chris!) so I'm looking forward to that panning out, and other than that things are just moving along.

I got my first clients assigned to me today for my new job position, and if my colleague gets back from Jury Duty tomorrow I'll get to move into that position full time. She was gone for a whole month (the third month of her 3 month probation period... really sucked for her) so we'll see how that goes.

I hope everyone has a great week!

A strange week. Home from work Monday and Tuesday with my son.
On Tuesday my daughter feinted at school so her and my wife spent most of Tuesday and parts of Wednesday in hospital doing various checkups. Becaue my daughter has been feeling bad these last months they take the feinting seriously. We are waiting for further checkups to see what is wrong. They are trying to determine if it's epilepsy of some kind.

Easter is gonna be relaxing becaue of the health of the daughter.

Star realms was relaxing on the evenings from Wednesday and on. Lckily two new solo enemies surfaced for me to use. Good little game.

My pbem's might be a little sporadic in the near future.
