1. ISTANBUL ..

And the 2nd half of my extravaganza of gaming in the multiplex started with my exciting chance to finally play this awesome coolness I had had on my radar for a very long time with some of my wonderful friends from my way North Austin gaming crews. This is another game that more than lives up to it's buzz with it's very clever mechanic of moving sets of one's tokens around a modular board to areas that give different effects and powers in order to manifest resources to get the 5 gems needed to win.

I think I actually had an advantage this time being the first-timer, an extremely rare occurrence indeed ! While all my ops were obviously planning their involved trip-engines ( If I go there, then I go over there.. then we can get this to go over there.. etc. ) after Robin's as always expert explanation I realized, Well, If I just go to these four squares that are all right together and close to my start area, can't I just get all 5 gems in a few turns. I then of course thought, surely this can't be THIS straightforward and there's something I am not grasping and there is no way an engine so simple due to this particular play's set up will work against experienced players.

But lo and behold, a few turns later, Robin says " Um, does everyone realize Kel is going to win in 3 turns and I don't think there is anything we can do to stop him?" And voila, indeed a few more extended turns to get the more resources it took to get my last gem, I did indeed get my 5th gem before anyone else!

How about that? I win my first game at BGG.CON on a first play !!??

I was determined to play this again with Anne's happy agreement to teach to see if there would a different playing experience than last year -- where this game took, euphemistically , a RATHER Long time.

And hooray !! Not only did I get to play with a BGG friend from my homelands in person for the first time, Anne's excellent teaching moved right along and this game took almost exactly ONE THIRD as long as it did on last BGG.CON. Hooray !!

And this time my knowledge that I had such a dreadful score before from not using the exporting much helped me a great deal . Ben ( of course) takes a big win with his ability to use some of the most expensive experts in the fairs as Anne and James were plagued by money troubles. So by some miracle, I pull out a healthy 2nd place and perhaps now this will become one of our BGG traditions !!

This little " cause" game of mine, I think Anne has either broken, or mastered, or redeveloped OR something-- because Anne decided that since it was so stressful to always try to process the double think that is the heart of the choices in this game-- she would play the entire game BLIND.

And after some excitements of her actually playing the $150 card for the $10 picnic basket, and 2 $110 ties where a $20 card won a $130 SIlver set.. she actually WINS a close game.

I still adore this game but I have not played it since and I am not putting it back on my 10x list for 2015. I still haven't decided how I feel about this outcome-- but it was certainly hilariously entertaining!!

Ever since Anne introduced this to me and I ran to Amazon to get my own copy, I have tried to get this to the table as often as possible. I don't think many of my friends are NEARLY has taken with this clever combo of cards and dice rolls and literature so as much as I would like it to, I don't think this is taking a spot in my 2015 10x list.

But we still had an entertaining go round which consisted of events such as:

Ben stole James'Bonnet.
Anne and Kel have to wait in the room and never get to dance. ( Which prompted Anne and I to decide that we were going to snoop in the bathrooms.)
Anne got way drunk at the party AGAIN.

From Anne's atrocious behavior she suitably got the lowest point scores and from me getting a lot of lucky point cards and getting my 2nd highest value husband, I did manage a 2nd place while our friend from the Cincinnati environs got very high cunning bonuses and his first choice of husband for the win.

We are very very late into our night before BGG.CON even officially starts so even though I thought I was retiring for the evening, I showed my San Antonio crew another ingenious-seeming little Japanese ditty in my game bags that I hadn't gotten to play yet--which intrigued them so they said No, No bed yet.,. let's play this !!

And oh sweet Cindy, how can you be so nice and still be so scary about games than involve any sort of bluff or lie?. She wins three hands in a row as Ben and I end up penniless --and we are still looking around to see if there is a tie breaker rule floating around? Tim shares said win which certainly pleases him since playing this was his idea! I am very intrigued to get this, yet another of my precious little Japanese micro games to the table often in 2015 !!

And after housing new arrivals situated ,and registration, and breakfast and all those real life things taken care of , my first official morning of BGG starts with this somewhat enigmatic game that had been on my radar to get off my unplayed list for a VERY long time.

I say enigmatic in the sense that while this game had huge buzz and hotness after its KS success and phenomenal communication from the designer who put a HUGE amount of historical research into this game, this title seemed to just sort of fall off the radar. I knew no one who had played this more than once, a ton of people who got rid of it without playing it, and it ironically seems to have what interest this game still has on its forums comes from people who are foreign !!

I knew I would love this since this game's mechanic is certainly akin to one of my favorite games, 1960: The Making Of The President and I can't say I was disappointed at all. The ironic cause IMHO of this game's lack of resonance throughout the BGG community lies within one of the designer's attributes: in order to keep as much historical accuracy with the extremely wonky pre-Civil War election vicissitudes there is a great deal of fiddliness as opposed to something like 1960. There are a lot of states where " If X and Z happens do not follow the normal of X Y Z" et al.

But I still had a wonderful time and I think the key to having what I hope will be more plays of this flow a bit better is quite simply to print out copies of the pages of the manual ( which can be a tad difficult to parse) that explain in excellent DETAIL what all these fiddlinesses entail. ( As well as making sure I print out the FAQ of a few minor state and card misprints.)

Other than that, this is a straightforward cube-pushing card-driven election game on a US map and that is exactly what I loved about it.

Tony ( Northern Democrats) did a great job of getting us through the rules since he was the only one who played before and he followed the oft-seen trope of the teacher running away with the game. Him and Cole both lucked out with a lot more effective cards than the rest of us and while I was the only one to LOCK one of my regions, Aimee and I had an unsuccessful uphill battle trying to mitigate Tony and Cole taking states from our home areas.

SCORES:

Tony 154/Aimee 23/Kel 58/Cole 68

NOTABLE QUOTES :

Don't ever say I didn't tap your Abe for you.
Hey Tony used my 1950's TPIR box to tap his Abe.
The Glasscock room is indeed the best place to get your Abe tapped.
Look around for that guy from the south that makes you uncomfortable, I am fairly sure he is coming for Kel.
I am glad we got to experience the unexpected pleasures of Abe tapping.

Aimee took a break as me and the boys got my copy of this Splotter to the table. And my goodness what an eye-opening experience THIS was.

This was one of a handful of games I for the most part deplored played during BGG.CON because I had a DRASTIC misconception of what the game actually IS !! I bought this from Ben thinking.. ooh.. Splotter and making movies.. this must be some sort of business/econ game-- why does this get so much hate?

Um, that became incredibly obvious quickly. This is NOT any game of the sort I thought it was, this is route building/spatial manipulation on a modular board and I couldn't get this on my sale/trade list fast enough.
I really did like the akin-to-Bus rod placing in order to help connect the resources/people/etc. in order to get a movie made and sold but it was just WAY WAY WAY too difficult to do so ( Others had told me they hated this because they had repeatedly played games to where everyone tied at zero) , the rod usage is WAY too limited, and the whole thing is a quixotic mess. My only Splotter fail.

SCORES:

I had nothing, Cole and Tony had ONE movie made but not sold and it seems the wonky tie breaker is the person who got the fewest turns by yet some other wonky issue??? I am not sure, and I don't care. Fail.

Hooray !! We move from that pasted-on-movie-theme disaster to my precious-- the first time I got to play this with my home friends after discovering it at DGM. I taught Cole's copy and at this point we were not sure if any one in the vendor hall was going to have copies of this so Cole was genuinely concerned as my roommate I might abscond with his. ( No worries, I got my own. )

I was happy that while perhaps not as madly in love with it as I was, Cole especially loved this and we all especially remarked again at the amazing mix of thinky mechanics in a game that still is rather straightforward and moves very quickly.

It moved even more quickly as Tony and Cole both decided to release the legacies to cut the game short, but they had not looked in the phantom fourth player cards that showed us 2 of the bonuses for having MULTIPLE categories of goodies and one penalty to give me an EXTREMELY rare win. ( I never beat both Cole and Tony at ANYTHING-- this I presume was a once in a lifetime event.)

Cole happily agreed for another test of my game and especially with his very involved game about to hit the publishers as we speak, he had some invaluable feedback. I didn't necessarily think I should add any mechanics to the front phase to add a race element ( still def not a bad idea, it just I think THICKENS what is a very simple game with too many mechanics ) but Cole DID help me immensely in my ongoing process to get the last memory phase to move faster while I am still trying to balance to not take away ALL the challenge of said last phase. Always so great to have people making their own games help you out with testing !!

SCORES FOR KEL GAME : The Battle For The CIVIL WAR BAKERIES: You Take The Cake

Cole made a radical comeback in the 2nd round after a very poor first round where a lot of bad dice rolls had his cakes go very stale and I ended up with the 4x chef. His much better 2nd round indeed moved a runway for me to something much closer in end scores. ( This was definitely an Important thing I was thankful to see played out again, I am still balancing the trauma if someone gets an expensive cake on the 13x in the first round and a high X chef causing a runaway beyond proportion to catch up. )

Cole $10,207 /Kel $14.445

Another notable BGG.CON event was our playing of this fancy yahtzee game that Tony and I especially love. As we got to the end game Bob was out with 6 3s to Tony's 7, Aimee unfortunately got very screwed in that many of the powerful cards were gone when her place came up in the turn rotations , and we were down to yours truly with 6 4s and ONE die left to roll ONE more time.

I have a 1/6 chance to get the 4 to win.

I GET IT !! THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER WON THIS GAME, EVER !!! (Which Actually caused Tony to start detecting the hole caused in the universe asking.. Naw.. WAIT.. Did you really get that 4? Let me see!! DAMNIT!!, all of this of course due to the nearly unbelievable fact that Kel, who usually is happy with 2nd, winning far too many things at BGG already !!)

Again I give this a try with my Austin BGG.CON friends after two plays at DGM and thankfully the cards were much more situated in this copy and with Matthew doing such a good job of teaching me the rules at DGM, this play went very quickly and the flow was much more cohesive and situated.

And for the first time, we adapted the FUN rules. Totally ignoring them in my plays at DGM this game has optional " fun" rules a la some of the silliness in Mystery of The Abbey and/or adapted from party games like Quelf where if X Y Z cards get played, then you must for the remainder of the game of using that power, DO something ridiculous throughout the rest of all of your card plays and dice rolls.

3 of us had " Must talk like the opposite Sex" so this game suddenly got more attention from the tables around us as the boys and I tried to jack up the octave of our voices resulting in much hilarity.

The general consensus from all my ops was this was mildly entertaining, especially with the given " fun" rule, but that it was perhaps far TOO straightforward and perhaps a tad too easy if you have your icons in your TONS of cards situated correctly in the prep phase to get nearly all the orders filled. Therefore needless to say this game was much more higher in the final scores than my DGM plays. And lookie there-- from Tony getting just ONE iffy dice roll at the end, Kel ekes out another win at something !!

Our final game of the day was again, this spectacular game I discovered at DGM that is by far, next to Owacon my favorite " new" Essen title. I was very happy and somewhat surprised that Cole and Tony were also happily taken with it as I was afraid they just may have found it a TOO easy/gateway title from one of my favorite categories-- that of course once again being gateway worker placement.

I had quite a sad showing as Tony's special power kept destroying mine and he was very excellent in planning his place in the rotation to play the rat/malpractice action on me a number of times, all giving him the decisive win.

Our next morning started with me finding James in the big room while some of my other cohorts were playing dexterity games in the hallway .

This was another notable event-- in that while I noticed this on another of my friends " games to watch and be interested in" I was intrigued as well to see a " light" Uwe R. 2-player. But as much as I loved once again a " different" kind of theme ( QUILTS !! Just like my beloved Quilt Show which has a place on my 10x in 2015 list.) I was sure to be horrid at this with my woeful lack of skills at anything that involves spacial placing, and this game is basically, to coin a verb, TETRISING a quilt on your tableux with different shaped pieces.

Also James had been teaching this to a number of people so I had very little hope, I just wanted to see what this was like. And not only did I love it ( The time element and the measurement of movements of the buttons and the jump over mechanics are really brilliant elements of this wonderful little design.) -- but I actually won !! With the amazing chance that I actually got the 7 square width bonus first, I actually get ahead by 11 points to stay !! Thanks James for having this out and teaching me and thanks to this at last being available from a US distributor on Amazon !!

And we start our first heavy thinking of the day with this game of Cole's that was at the time nigh near completion and what a superb design it is. Set in the universe of Pax Porifiana there is a market of taking influence of certain factions that is utilized to try to get certain empires to topple while trying to keep secondary empires enough in play to help the main objective. The extremely difficult balancing action of all the different actions that can also be done with the cards seems near perfect and this really is a brain burning manipulation of not THAT many cards.

If I had any minor concerns it was perhaps the win conditions were just a tad TOO difficult to manifest and perhaps just one more action allowed to the players on at least some of their turns would perhaps remedy this.

I Actually had gotten very close on two tries but once you get close, if you do not topple/win, the then result of what's not available to you anymore can be somewhat devastating thus giving Cole and Tony the tied win as Britain topples.

I know I am biased since Cole is my friend and my BGG roommate but there has been an INCREDIBLE amount of thought and process put into how this game is put together and I think it will be a monstrous success in its final form, both from people familiar with the mechanics of Pax Porfiana and players who haven't experienced that game yet, such as yours truly.

We then move to another BGG.CON tradition of this rare game which is Kramer's cousin to the Sackson classic Acquire. I thought I was making a good choice jacking up the price of Lorde with my cards as much as I could and despite get two late major expansions, but it was indeed way too late as Aimee and and I were trying to concentrate in high level stuff while Cole and Tony diversified to run roughshod over us. Tony is SUPPOSED to have a copy of this in his hands eventually and I will be so excited to be able to play this on a regular basis !!

SCORES:

Tony $911 MIL WIN
AImee $400 MIL
Cole $710 MIL
Kel $310 MIL

NOTABLE QUOTES :
Can you buy other peoples' cards in this game? No, but you can shut the fuck up.
I haven't shot up that high since the 1970s.
No, you can't out your rod where I put mine.

Yet more fun with this coffee dice throw, this time with a whole compliment of 4 of us. Cole and Tony took to this very quickly with their blends staying featured through a lot of degradation and Aimee and I suffering from atrocious dice rolls with all of our researching not building enough up powers to do anything to catch the leaders.

SCORES : Cole 22 WIN/ Tony 16/Aimee 5/Kel 9

And then of all things some bizarre ancient obscure dexterity of using sort of spring-back cardboard racquets to execute a representation of a tennis match where the ball is some sort of quasi-little dust ball. Great silly fun with Tony and I each taking a game.

SCORES:

Tony 40/Kel O TONY WIN GAME 1
Kel 40/Tony 30 Kel wins two points past deuce -- KEL WIN GAME 2

This certainly by far was the most entertaining total fail of any of my game show items and was such a disaster I immediately took it OFF my 10x in 2014 list. I do so because I knew attempting to play it again with this particular crew of people was just befuddlingly not working to give this any more tries in 2014.

It's not that this crew is lacking in vocabulary or that these people are some of my regular game show crew-- for just some reason when the very first word in the definition of what I THINK the printers intended ( this was indeed a nearly 50 year old edition) was somewhat archaic throwing both people giving the clues, that everything from then on was sort of a disaster. But what an entertaining disaster that totally started to attract the attention of people at tables around us. Especially as those of us who were COMPLETELY lost on receiving end kept trying to process THIS set of clues :

cheer, court, vagina, John, killer, director....

???????????????????????? I am still laughing typing this.. ESPECIALLY without those last three words, would anyone have ANY clue what word is being gone for here? Of course the answer is WOO -- which showed my age because NO ONE had heard of the idea of " pitching woo" as some gallant 1950's way to refer to hitting on people. ( Court was on the right track but in that context I kept thinking of a judicial court which didn't help.) We then went from one extreme to the other as I was accused of being psychic when I got the word SULTAN from only the clue ALADDIN. The rest of the game plodded along with Tony and Bob taking the win on another first clue that totally flummoxed me. I thought I have the perfect TWO clues for this word, so I will pass the option thinking I bet the ops will not get this on one word. I thought it this was cemented when I heard Bob's first clue but then once again showing my age ---I just never thought Tony would correctly guess TUBE from YOU.... thinking I will get there with TOOTHPASTE and CONTAINER .. but he did do so, giving them the win. And then a dreadful bonus lightning round by the ops where they got ONE word cemented my thoughts of " Well, we have lots of other game show stuff to play on a regular basis it's OK that this hasn't gone well. " A hilarious play but one that I am sure made Allan Ludden roll over in his grave. I DO look forward to getting this back to the table along with Password Plus with the San Antonio crew sometime where this was much more successful.

SCORES: Bob/Tony 40 WIN Kel/Aimee 10 B and T 100 for winning game and 100 in bonus $200 to 0

Tony and Aimee took a break from our Password experience and Bob and I then got in two more of my 2ps from my 10x list. This was by far the closest game of this I have played so far with I getting a very narrow win when unluckily Bob stayed in until 2 8s came up.

SCORES

Bob 33 /Kel 30 ( almost to the 31 lose threshold!!)

POKER ALL IN TRIVIA

I then went to play in this event where I had a very good time and very bad luck. I bet very low when I ended up knowing things like what Paul McCartney's real first name is, but then later after more unsuccessful questions I decided to go all in on trying to guess what the Military Budget of the Kennedy Administration was-- I had the 2nd closest answer but not the right one, indeed losing all my chips. Was going to try to stay in or go out with a bang so I could get back to gaming with my crews, the latter occurring.
