Let's start this month with an unpublished prototype.

Being a sucker for golf games, a WIP thread caught my attention:

The 19th hole combines dicerolling, dice drafting as well as a clever kind of vector movement (for the golf ball).
The combination of those three makes you actually "feel" like playing a ball across the green.

The game is still a WIP, but as per now it already looks awesome!

This month I'm making a few different games.

First up is a copy of Tiny Epic Galaxies from the newly released Premium PnP files.

Second games is Far Space Foundry. I was able to get myself a copy of the PnP during their recent successful Kickstarter campaign.

The third game on my table is a prototype of Emissary by Oliver Kiley. I'm very hyped over this game. It is an express 4X title set in space.

My Fourth and final game this month is a retheme of The Resistance. It's based on Battlestar Galactica and is made up of a deck of 55 cards with no chits or game boards. Very cool.

I just finished a titan project that took me 3 months to create and build Twilight Struggle rethemed and in Greek language. Also a bit smaller so that it will be easier to play in a normal dimensions table. cool

I also just finished building Pandemic: European Challenge...

I also printed a copy of Todd Sanders's latest game. This is a very simple two player game with just a handful of pieces. I normally hate cutting out hex shaped pieces but since there were only seven of them it wasn't too big of a deal. I mounted all the components and it came out very nicely.

I've finally finished making a the first draft of my Hebrew adaptation of Paperback. Far too many cards!

Most of the hard work was already done by Lines42, in his article about how he adapted Paperback to German, taking word distribution into account.

This was a fun project - there's something really appealing about spending time with Perl scripts and word corpuses (corpusii?), and then plugging the numbers into a spreadsheet until the distributions look like the original.

A solo test-run seems to indicate I'm not too far off. At least, nothing seems really broken. But I'll have to play test this for real.

Credit goes to Melody for spending so much of her free time helping me (read: "doing all the work") figure out the distribution of the card costs and abilities. Thank you so much!!

Glued and cut the cards for this one today.

I tweaked the files a bit to include cutting guides and since the cards aren't quite the standard 2.5x3.5 I added a border which also gave me some wiggle room for aligning the fronts and backs.

Ooooh Page 1! And...so many games crafted already! I thought I'd get in on the action now. I'm at work so pics will be added later to my posts.

Well my first post for this month is part build, part feedback. Skip the feedback part if not interested...

THE BUILD - When I first got into PnP I thought I'd do one or two games and be done with it. Then I got sidetracked by all the cool looking PnP games and quickly re-thought my plan. My plan became to build a PnP 'kit' of sorts - one that had common components so I wouldn't have to raid other games. Currently the games live in an old sweet shop tin. I need to get some pics/files/something to start making it look more game-y and less...well, less like a sweet shop tin...

Methinks I'm gonna need a bigger tin! modest

THE FEEDBACK - I've crafted 10 games now and have been asked how some of them were. Having not played any at the time I had no answer, but now I do. I thought I'd post this here because not everyone checks the individual game pages once they've built the game...

Assume the following -
The artwork is on point. I love beautiful/striking looking games.
The games have been played 2 player.
The games have been played at least 5 times.

1.
Weilong - a very easy build, with only 6 cards - one of which is a reference. You only need 5 dice but I was feeling extravagant so I got 5 for each player colour. Simple and elegant game which seems to be able to scale well with its 2-5 player count. It's very thematic with the Number 1 son causing the most disappointment if he fails his father's wishes.
Recommended for - lovers of Chinese theme, lovers of Yahtzee type games, simple PnP, lovers of cards + dice + card powers, handbag/pocket games, small footprint games (airport/airplane, restaurant etc.)
2.
Gameshop Gladiators - also an easy build of just a few cards. Very light, simple and fun dice game with card powers to modify. We like it but we find some characters unbalanced. The Eurogamer appears to be really weak and the RPG-er quite strong. When they meet....good night!
Recommended for - lovers of board game theme, lovers of Yahtzee type games, simple PnP, lovers of cards + dice + card powers, handbag/pocket games, small footprint games (airport/airplane, restaurant etc.)
3.
No Good Gremlins - This is our most played one to date and approaching 10 plays is firmly a part of the game rotation. SO much fun! SO tense! We love the press your luck element in it....do I build more with Gremlins or possibly a thunderstorm on the horizon? Do I put cards into the scrapheap to bank them and hope my opponent doesn't take them? Big sighs of relief when you launch a rocket and the gremlin comes out to eat the very material of the one you just launched. Groans when one comes out too early...
Recommended for - lovers of F.U.N. who like push your luck in games. Kind of reminds me of Dragonheart a bit so if you like that then give this one a try!
4.
Crashland - A solo game that I was hoping would be good co-operatively. After having played it solo to learn it, I definitely realised it truly is a solo game, and that the reason co-operative games can be played solo is because of variable player powers. That being said, it's easy to learn, plays fast, the rules are well written and the art is gobsmackingly beautiful. I've played it quite a lot (especially seeing as I'm not into solo gaming) and played it with 2 taking turns. I've even developed a couple of variants for it which I suppose I'll post on the game page becuz this post is already WAY too long!
Link to Variants - http://boardgamegeek.com/article/18828454#18828454
Recommended for - lovers of space theme, solo gaming
5.
Aether Captains:The Search - A game for 2 of evade and capture. Shot up to the top of my play list after crafting it because it was so fun to make and looked really adorable. Really love how cleverly it's designed. The OH says it reminds him of playing Mr. X but never having played it I can't comment. We've played it over 10 times now (alternating each time) and the criminal has only won once. I'm thinking I may remove one of the police barricades and add an additional 5 plain map cards to make it a bit more difficult/last longer. It plays in about 5-10 mins which I think is too short. Then again, I tend to think that games I like are too short anyway!
Recommended for - those looking for a cool, fast-playing 2 player murder/mystery type game that is portable, replayable and fun!
UPDATE 16 Apr - This has quickly become one of our favourite games. The extra 5 plain map cards add in more time to the game and it somehow feels a bit more balanced. We've also been experimenting with an additional crime scene. What tends to happen is the police hang around the last crime scene in wait and that tends to stall the game (even without the extra cards) so with 4 plain map cards and 1 extra crime scene card, we play that the criminal has to hit 3 of the 4 crime scenes to win. That makes it more tactical for us because you don't know where the criminal will strike next and the police have to put much more thought into their choice of positioning. A very solid game indeed!
6.
Six Sons of the Sultan - I didn't set out to play two TS games in a row (cuz seriously, I'm starting to feel a lil bit like a stalker *lol*). I tried to learn another one and the rules were incomprehensible to me. As always, TS games contain rules that are clear, and well written so you can jump into a game in 2mins flat. This one I would highly recommend. Ignore the theme. I abhor (and I can't stress that enough) tea and I like playing it. You're not thinking about tea. You're not thinking about the sultan. You're thinking about rolling dice, and getting up the point tracker. Surprisingly engaging, surprising amount of decision making. This is one that is over 10 plays now and I've lost every time and still want to play. THAT is the mark of a great game.
Recommended for - lovers of microgames, lovers of dice/dice drafting games, simple PnP, lovers of cards + dice + card powers, handbag/pocket games, small footprint games with a caveat - I would not recommend this for plane or train journeys. There are multiple cubes/markers in use and any slight joggle would send them all over! It's definitely going with us on camping trips though.
UPDATE 16 Apr -
7.
Dead Drop - We've played this countless times since I've made it. It is a really simple build of just the 13 game cards and a few references. The art is stunning and the game plays really well with 2. It's a nice change to use another side of my brain as it is slightly different from other games in my collection. I am big on having variety in my collection as I don't didn't plan to have very many games...well, look how THAT's gone! *LOL* We are having a good time with it so far and have not tried out the variant where you have the stash face down as yet. Something to look forward to...
Recommended for - lovers of microgames, deduction, mild bluffing. Another to take on the camping trips and playable virtually anywhere as it has a really small footprint.
8.
Detective Graves Against the Mastermind - We have so far played multiple sessions of the Single Case variant and I have to say that this game is SO brilliant! The build is not difficult or complicated, but it is time consuming because it has multiple components - about 108 cards, 12 location cards, optional tokens. This build is worth it for sure. Thanks to user TTDG for forcing me to make this a play priority. The game plays smoothly, the rules are clear, and it seems to be infinitely replayable because of the way the cases, identity and evidence are set up. This is so good that it really should be published. I cannot recommend this highly enough. We also love the flavour text on the bottom of the cards. It's stuff like, "Stole some art today. It's quite nice. Shame I'll have to sell it soon". The first few games we played we read the text out loud to each other when playing the cards. That was quite fun, but not something you do every time and you to tend to forget about it after a while.
Recommended for - lovers of TV shows like Monk, 'whodunit' style shows and games.
9.
Island of D - I was really looking forward to this as it was one of the first games that got me interested in print and play. I wanted to use this as a co-op game but I tried it out solo first. WHAT a disappointment. After wading through all the rules, figuring out how to play, and finally playing, it was indescribably boring. The story is engaging and we totally got into it, but then the combat mechanism was so clunky and tedious that we lost interest. Rolling dice for 5 mins with no result is no fun. Tried it a a few times and I can safely rate it a 2 on the BGG scale (very poor, annoying, I plan to never play this again). I felt like I was wading through thick glue the whole time. It reminded me of Talisman, but I actually WANT to play Talisman. Well, the good news is that the way I make my cards I was able to reclaim 70 cards and sleeves. Need all the cards I can get for my next project which I think is about 200 cards....
Recommended for - Not recommended. Try the Island of D 2 instead.
10.
Island of D 2 - I was a bit leery after playing IoD and being so sorely disappointed. Then I thought 'What's the worst that could happen?' I wanted to give it a fair shot. Sometimes the sequel is better than the original movie. This is certainly the case here. This plays very differently to the Island of D. Combat is smooth, the decisions are more interesting and it is DEFinitely much more fun. The board is modular and YOU decide in which direction it spreads so your adventures vary from time to time. I might even decide to craft the Dungeon of D now. The diceless power cards system is SO much better than the dice rolling.
Recommended for - solo games, co-op games, lovers of fantasy adventure.

Final Thoughts and Honourable Mentions -
I've re-read all my comments for the games and, playing them over the March-April period, they still hold true. I've had a really enjoyable time trying out all the games but after a while it kinda started to feel like work. I give props to video reviewers who have to play SO many games, and all the PnPers who build a game and then play it straight away. I think after 5-10 plays is a fair enough time to judge how a game plays for 2 reasons: 1. The first time you play a game it is quite easy to get excited (aka New Game Smell) and give a favourable review. 2. On the other side of the coin, the first time you play a game you don't know what's going on, what is the best strategy to employ etc. and so it's easy to dismiss a game for various reasons - too hard, not fun/engaging, confusing etc. All of the games above (except IoD) have been played at least five times, generally over 10, and some over 20. I'm the family gamer and I am lucky enough to have somebody who wants to play games with me every day, but we still want to play our favourites too!
I.
Smoking Gun - We tried to play this game a few times and just couldn't grasp it. The designer was very nice when I emailed him and he explained a few things...we still didn't get it. He offered further help but I've decided to shelve it for the minute. I still love the art and the thought of how the game might play but, sadly, we don't get it yet.
II.
Dead Men Tell No Tales - We've played this twice and we get the feeling that we like it, but having to refer to the rulebook quite a lot in the first few games always is tedious, and tends to break up the mood and disturb the flow of the game a bit so we are reserving final judgment for now.
III.
Outlaw - I only built this yesterday, but I've already had a couple games this morning before work. It is super simple to learn and play so it's good as a filler or for children, but so far I prefer Six Sons of the Sultan and Weilong. Time will tell.

Well! I've built a game that apparently no longer has an entry in the BGG database - Undercover Assassins - hmmm....

Well I suppose the moral of the story is - If you're interested in a PnP, nab the files because it may not hang around forever!

PnP #11

Well, when it was in the database, it supported 2+ players, 8 cards per player and you'd just print out how many ever sets you wanted. I did 4 sets, never got around to crafting it, and now it's gone! Not sure if I even still have the files...

I was looking for a deduction type game but this doesn't come up in the category 'deduction'...I found it anyway off your awesome geeklist Todd and it's definitely for two so I'm giving it a go.

The cards are in the process of being cut out and once everything is assembled pics will be posted.

UPDATE -

PnP #12

Cards - the usual method

Pawns - Downloaded some Google Images of police hats for the 4 police pawns and a steampunk mystery character for the criminal, used old bottle tops (metal crown caps) for the markers and popped the pics in, topped with an epoxy sticker. Ran the pics through a sticker maker first so they stick to the inside of the bottle caps.

Tokens - Downloaded pics of crime scene tape for the crime scene markers, cones for the closed sewer markers and barricade tape for the 3 barricade markers. Then put on clear cover film, and cut everything out. Then I ran all tokens thru the Xyron X Sticker maker, and mounted them on 3mm matboard (or whatever they use in 3 ring binders - I'm still making tokens out of the old binder I decimated a couple months ago), then cut to proper size.

The pawns and tokens look SO cute in person...I'm super proud of how they turned out.

All the circles are cut with the X-Cut circle punch, all the straights with rotary cutter + metal ruler.

Anybody noticing a crime theme here?

I saw this entry for the 2015 BGG & Geekway to the West Microgame Prototype Design Contest and it looked right up my alley. The files have been printed and just waiting to be assembled.

UPDATE -

PnP # 13

I've already voted for this entry to go through to the next round, even before having played it. Out of all the entries by name, theme and description I was only interested in 3 of them. One had no files at all, one had only rules files, and this was the complete package, so this one was the auto-win for me. Good luck Dave Mansell!

I really should give this one some love as I've had it printed/laminated for months now. I PLAN to craft it this month but not sure if I will be successful. I've got Easter weekend coming up though...

In Progress...

UPDATE - PnP #14

The only thing left to do is to create the Mastermind Deck. I haven't cut the cards out yet but it DOES take me a while seeing as I do them all individually shakeshake

It's all done!

Location Cards - printer paper, then laminated
Cards - Printer paper attached to playing cards with double sided tape
Tokens - Mounted on an Office Depot box cardboard lid, covered in clear film

There is a new version of the pnp updating the cards and giving different characters and domain rules. Get this but do not copy over the earlier files you saved. Some characters not included from earlier.
