South Dublin Boardgamers is a friendly group of multinational gamers that meet in family homes in the Dundrum/Blackrock area. We play a wide range of games with the emphasis on fun.

Our web site is: http://www.bigtent.com/groups/sdboardgamer

You'll also find out more about us on this thread: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/181829/item/3565937#it...

…and you can email us at: SouthDublinBoardgamers@yahoo.com

Here's what we've been playing recently.

April 2015
There's a slight change to the Geeklist format this month, incorporating all the family plays into a single entry so as to give a better sense of what to expect at the SDGB tables on a regular evening. That said, some of the 'family games' do get table time at regular sessions, with a breakthrough this month for Rhino Hero, for example.

Knavecon V (SDBG road trip to Limerick for International Tabletop Day - April 11th)

To those BGGers living in Europe, the Americas, or Australia, the hundred miles (175 km) or so between Dublin and Limerick would seem an incidental, almost leisurely afternoon drive of no great import: practically dropping over to see the neighbours. In Ireland this kind of thing seems like a major expedition to the other side of the Universe. As a group, SDBG haven't really done road trips, although we are hoping to take a delegation to Essen this year, and at some point BGG con. Our training began in April 2015 with the complex planning for a trip to Limerick, where a locally-based gamer that used to play with us on occasional visits to Dublin now runs his own twice-annual regional convention. It was actually a super event, with a good crowd mainly of boardgamers (no mini war-games, no Magic regionals, though there was organised Catan and a Star Realms tournament). Good humour abounded, with a real sense of camaraderie, and the retail was actually very good (including a lively bring-n-buy section). We played both as a group and in breakout sessions. Here's what we logged:

Love Letter: Batman
K2
Star Realms
Camel Up
Smash Up
Masquerade
Ascension: Storm of Souls
Terra Mystica

Star Realms was, as noted, actually a tournament, and three of the four of us that participated hadn't even played the game (I'd played it only in app form). One of our four made the final two, though he lost to the same single player that had beaten him in the first round (and Gambit wasn't used in either game).

Most Plays: Winner

One SDBG member has correctly pointed out that 'Batman: Convict Capture' would be a better name for this ('Gotham Capture' would be good too, no?), but hey, we love this version of Love Letter, so 'Love Batman' would also work (and be much funnier, a bit like the court/Conan action in Age of Conan). Anyway, this is getting a lot of plays. Who says crass brand-based re-issues don't work? Not Hasbro, for sure. And this is a lot faster than Batman Monopoly (which, actually would work better to theme as Bruce Wayne Monopoly if you think about it).

Epic of the Month: Winner

Another epic play in which a second-time player came out tops, having seemingly duly watched and learned. I wasn't directly involved, but it seems a tight game was given tremendous flavour by the inexperienced player standing poised to win, almost acting generously, then being duly informed that when you play the game of thrones you win or... you know. This was given added bite by the advisor having their own personal agenda of ensuring the other contender for the throne wouldn't take it. Ah, yes: devious wiles abound.

Most Plays: Honourable Mention

Still hitting the tables, and still frequently, but some even quicker and shinier little challengers have taken its 'most plays' crown this month. It has definitley spread out into the non-member friend groups and family gatherings slots, though. Does that make it a gateway game? Time will tell.

Epic of the Month: Honourable Mention

First SDBG outing for this in April 2015, and it quickly racked up several plays and a lively discussion about strategies and possibilities on our forum. A few more plays followed, and seems to have really excited the imaginations of the players. It may not have been epic in immediate experience, but the discussion was robust enough to push it into an honourable mention for the month (measured, perhaps, across the five plays it racked up in a short timeframe).

Family Gaming in April

SDBG is partially defined by the fact that many of us have families and we game in our family homes, and though sometimes our 'future gamers' will take part in games with the regular crew, a great deal of in-family gaming goes on every day. We honour and respect this (some of the up-and-comers are cannier and quicker than any of the old guys), and some kids' games get played on the big tables with no excuse, but we record the family activity in its own sub-list. This was what was played in April.

Tales & Games: The Three Little Pigs
Lost Cities
Colt Express
Dixit
Smash Up
Tales & Games: The Hare & the Tortoise
Camel Up
Tsuro
Splendor
Timeline: Music & Cinema
Cardline: Animals
O Zoo le Mio
Labyrinth
Dominion
Terror in Meeple City
Ascension: Storm of Souls
Ticket to Ride

This fun dexterity game gets a few starter appearances at SDBG, and did in April. The session of three games saw a remarkable 'backwards' manoeuvre, and an Itchy Hat of Shame for the three-time loser (me).

A very solid title that doesn't get frequent play, but is usually a satisfying game when it does. April's session saw a lot of land grabbing and a lot of shootouts. Darn tootin' (and so forth).

After a quiet introduction in the past month or so, multiple copies of this are now in play in SDBG. It gets brought along for a quick starter to many sessions, and generally gets more than one play when it does. Slight cheat on the 'most plays' front, maybe, but it also racked up the numbers in April solely in terms of frequency of appearance.

The owner dubs it his favourite of the LCGs, even over Netrunner. I am intrigued. We do generally enjoy all things Cthulhu in the group, but Game of Thrones and Netrunner are by far the most dominant LCGs.

Plays of this game are reaching almost tournament proportions at this point, with one member in particular shouting 'bring me another challenger' as play after play sees victory after victory for his side. It would rate higher on the 'most plays' front if it were appearing at more actual sessions, but in terms of raw number of plays, this one racked up a very substantial score in April, bringing 1989 along for the ride, I'm told.

Getting a foothold as a preference to the original, it seems. I'm still an old-school devotee, but there are several members that don't care for it. This implementation seems to have some twists that might ameliorate the concerns.

SDBG are making some progress with this now, racking up a few Alien wins and taking foray into Aliens with just two players, then a 'fully unlocked' run with five players in which the only new player found themselves with the evil agenda, and then, in a remarkable session, managed both to observe and contribute to the ultimate downfall of the marine team. It looked to be under control, with an early Alien Queen appearance reckoned a good thing, but then the captives began to pile up, the wounds began to fester, and suddenly there were fewer and fewer marine squads to fight the good fight. The game is getting some decent table time, and seems to win fans as it goes.

Making a surprise and welcome return to the tables after a long dormancy, this game, a 'group' copy of which came to SDGB as a donation from an online retailer (boardgamer.ie) is in circulation, but it's also broken through with members' own copies now, and one member in particular professes a growing addiction. It's not universally loved in the group, but it has definite fans. Mermaids scored a win, I heard. Funny, when I played them earlier in the month, it didn't work out that way. Grrr.

Ironically this play was not logged as a 'family play' but was a full-on SDBG group 'quick game' on an evening which also included Quartermaster General and One Night Ultimate Werewolf. Just shows you can never really quite take for granted what we'll play on any one evening.
