Played by: Gordon (Rebs) and Chris (Blue Bellies)

Historically a two day battle fought in South West Tennessee between a Union army led by Grant and a Confederate force led by Johnston/Beaureguard. After a surprise Confederate attack on day 1 the Union forces managed to fall back on a landing point on the Tennessee river by which they were reinforced overnight and counter-attacked to secure victory on day 2.

Chris and I had visited this system once before when we played Test of Fire: Bull Run 1861 which I had quite liked - Chris not so much so. This game has an almost identical rule-set but the terrain over which the battle is fought gives it a very different feel - lots of woods and hills make movement and attack difficult. The game is action dice driven supplemented by cards for additional actions or to enhance actions being taken.

As the Rebels the onus was on me to attack and to use the first day advantage in initiative to do as much damage to the Union units as I could and drive them back towards the river. Despite an initial handful of cards it was pretty hard going with the Union defending numerous hills. after threatening Chris's Union veterans on my left I managed to take the central hill overlooking Shiloh church only to have Grant appear and force march to take it straight back. Ironically it was Chris's success there that lead me to push through the centre and threaten both the Landing site (immediate Reb win if I got it) or the most northerly VP location. The Union were pushed from the VP location and I managed to get a tenuous hold on it and then reinforced it before Chris could counter-attack successfully. With the first day ending a Rebel win.

Enjoyed this - lots of tough decisions to make - the action dice do a good job of not allowing you to be a god-like commander with troops that obey your every whim when and where you want them to and good use of your cards is important. The timing mechanism for the game is also good.

One fly in the ointment is that the rule book is very loose for what is a fairly simple game - pretty poor show for the second game in a series.

Gordon - won [8]
Chris - [?]

Played By James, Mark, Roy and Simon (first play)

A first for Simon and a second for Roy and Mark.

As with most games of roll I didn't really concentrate on what other people were doing but I had the starting tile that rewarded economy on producing gene goods and using that to get credits while cashing in VPs as much as possible. In the end it was a win for Roy who did something that I didn't notice but was the superior tactic (clearly)

Roy - 57
James - 54
Martin - 46
Simon - 35

A second run through straight after the first.

As with most games of roll I didn't really concentrate on what other people were doing. As I had lots of blue worlds I was concentrating on a consume rather than trade strategy and it seemed to work quite well. Other people had (clearly) rubbish strategies as they ate my dust.

James - 41
Roy - 28
Simon - 23
Mark - 22

Played By James (first play), Mark, Roy and Simon (first play)

Highly anticipated play through of this for me. After a quick whip through the rules we slipped into our chaps, filled our six shooters and climbed aboard the train.

The first turn ended up with me being shot a couple of times but most of us started to pick up loot and were swinging at air by the end of the round. The second round saw us disappearing into a tunnel for the first time as the marshal came into play moving us to the roof with the aid of a shot to the face.

Roy was busy bopping us in the nose and picking up our purses (it takes all sorts) using his special power while I was moving up and down a lot as that was my only cards other than bullets, getting shot for good measure along the way.

Mark was busy unloading his gun going for the special bonus points and I was just behind.

By the final round Roy had lots of loot, Mark had unloaded all his bullets and I had to discard twice looking for my last shooting card but to no avail as I pulled 6 bullet cards (thanks deck) and ended up in poor shape (and had a $2k swing because of it).

In the end Mark picked up the empty gun and most bullets shot bonuses to hold off Roy's many many purses.

From a personal point of view I found this quite disappointing and not as fun as I was expecting (I likened it to when you go and see a movie with loads of hype then you can end up unfairly disappointed). I'd need to play again to see what it's like with a second play through.

Mark - $2450
Roy - $2300
Simon - $1000
James - $0

Played by Gareth, James, Josh*, Ash* and Andrew

For a change I decided to sit down for a game of Roll for the galaxy. As with most games of roll I didn't really concentrate on what other people were doing.

Ash ended up rushing to fill his tableau while I needed one more turn to grab a load of extra VPs from my 6+ development ( although Garteh would have been able to hold me off I'm sure - not that I know what he had in front of him). Realistically I shouldn't really write these things up should I...

Gareth - 33
James - 30
Andrew - 29
Ash* - 27
Josh - 21

Josh was supposed to write this up but obviously hasn't bothered.

I'm stuggling to remember what happened now, I seem to recall that me, Gareth and Josh were all very close at the end, with Andrew a bit behind. I think Josh won on a tie break.

All theories ended up being correct, which was fortunate for me because i published my mushroom theory after only eliminating 50% of the possibilities.
