Milestone
A stone set up beside a road to mark the distance in miles to a particular place.

However for the purpose of this list:
An action or event marking a significant change or stage in development.

Is turning 60 milestone? It is an event that recently occurred for me. I not convinced but several people tells me it is a milestone.

So what are some games represent a milestone for you? I'm putting down some that came to mind for me, perhaps not the first in any case but the ones that stick out most in my mind.

Initiation:
Dogfight - I remember my dad picking this up for me, one of my early games. I liked the aerial view of the trench lines, really evoked the Great War. Learning how to do roll and maneuver, the play/counter play of the cards. I think it was one of my favorites growing up. My copy didn't survive while I was growing up. a few years ago at a garage sale there was the '70s version for $1 I had to pick up a replacement copy.

I also thought of Chess since as I growing up I was a chess player, my older brother took delight in beating me until I learned enough that I would regularly beat him, then he started to lose interest.
Another was Bridge, my parents loved the game and it was the era of bridge clubs. My brother and I were used in fill in or training partners. My father never offered quarter, so it was learn to play well or be crushed.

Branching out:
For me it was when my brother got me a subscription to S&T for my birthday, A very well received gift. How fascinating it was to have a history article usually by the designer/developer along with a game on the topic. One thing I did enjoy about it was you got to see some of the thought processes that went into the game.

My friend and I would try out each issue, some were hits other misses. PGG was one of the hits. Some interesting things were that you had to consolidate the Panzer divisions to hit hard but then you want to spread them out to exploit. For the Soviets having units where the owner doesn't know the strength until committed was real hoot. We tried all sorts of option and strategies.
Others I enjoyed from that era:
Winter War - Random events and very asymmetric
Frederick the Great - Where maneuver is paramount and combat should be avoided unless you can win.
Panzer Armee Afrika - wow 40 to 60 hex movement factors?!

Gaming Group:
At my office a friend picked up a copy of 1830: Railways & Robber Barons when it came out, it became a staple for a group of office mates who played games. I always found it to be a challenging game. Its hard to keep track of whether you in front or behind the curve. While I've played it a bunch of times. However, it is one where I've not convinced myself that I play well.

My wife would not/will not touch 18xx or a Wargame, if her life depended on it. Too long/complex in her opinion.

However she did take to train games such as Empire Builder Rail Games, Metro, and later on Ticket to Ride

I still have her interested in lighter - family style Euros - We still play a lot of Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan today. She has no interest in complex rules heavy strategy games, sorry Mr Feld. Often when I come back from a game night, my comment about a game is that I enjoyed it but she would hate it. I continue to be on the lookout for what would interest my partner.

Preparing the next generation:
Question: What is a way to find a wargaming opponent?
Answer: Grow your own.

My son became interested in history, and it was a nice progression to have him interested in wargames. We started with Battle Cry.

I used Paths of Glory since my son has my number in this game. It doesn't matter which side I take he always seems to pull out a win.
We've played several types wargames over the years, he prefers card driven (CDG) style games.

His favorites are Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage (I still have my Avalon Hill edition), Wilderness War, World War II: Barbarossa to Berlin
We've been a bit more frustrated with Empire of the Sun, The Halls of Montezuma. They were more difficult to figure out.

Captured by a genre:
I had been playing train games for a few years and had Acquire and Civilization - Does this mean I was playing Euros before Euros were cool, and just didn't realize it?

Ran across Settlers at a train game convention, it was an extracurricular action. I was impressed with its play and immediately began looking for other games of the same type.

skippen's Week(s) that Was/Were:

Face 2 Face Games:
Player's Handbook (D&D 5e) -- our campaign continues. This week was fun, but sadly it was really hampered by a single player taking his character's roleplay a bit too far, and really interrupted the flow of the game for the rest of the party.
Advanced Squad Leader-- ASL12, Confusion Reigns. Interesting scenario, but I was soundly defeated (which looking at ROAR is not unexpected). I could have done better if I had setup a bit better. Missed a key strongpoint for my HMG.

PBEM/Web (started):
N/A

PBEM (in progress):
The Castles of Burgundy -- playing with the slowest players on this earth.
Advanced Squad Leader -- Bread Factory #2 vs. Luke.
Advanced Squad Leader -- Toothless Tiger vs. Ron.
Roads to Gettysburg -- Patrick has this sewed up, but I am using this opportunity to learn more of the rules.
Great Campaigns of the American Civil War -- playtest of Atalnta is Ours vs. Chris.
1830: Railways & Robber Barons -- continues on. Did my first company dump. Not sure if it was the wisest thing to do, but it wasn't wrong.
Thunder Alley -- just about to finish the first round.

PBEM (finished):
The Rose King

Acquisitions from the Collection:

Departures from the Collection

On the nightstand (currently reading):
Murder of Roger Aykroyd, by Agatha Christie

In the life and Times of skippen: Not much. My wife started her Sunday - Friday work schedule, so I now have Sundays to myself, and we only have 1 day a week off together. I need to push hard to finish my Grudge bust for ReaperCon. I have been distracted by ASL of late. This week I hope to push hard on it, and I expect I will be going to 2nd Saturday painting in Denver this Saturday. I NEED to get this done by the end of April.

Castles of Mad King Ludwig: March 31 - Once & Future Gamers. Only 3 of us this night. I choose this game, knowing that it wasn't one of the players' cup of tea, but he also owns the local game store, and we all agreed he needed to play this so he could at least speak intelligently about it with customers. I do enjoy this game, but I've yet to win it.

Highlights of games played 3/31-4/6:

After only eight games the week before, I was down to seven this week, between being busy at work and the folks I often game with being at least as busy.

The highlight of the week involved a visit up to Aaron Weissblum's studio, where he introduced me to another of his unique dexterity games, which I'll certainly buy if he ever sells them. Aaron is, in some ways, a kin to Reinhold Wittig, more than any other US designers.

Outpost (Joe=54+) - I had my usual luck - my hand draws 4 Waters with wonderful consistency - but managed to almost make a game of it. We were up to 17 virtual research at the end; the player hoarding them longest won going away. Oddly, he didn't have a Moon Base or Planetary Cruiser; I had the only Planetary Cruiser, which ran me over twice list cost.

Big City (Joe=31) and Zahltag (Joe=14) - coincidentally, I played these two Franz-Benno Delonge games back-to-back. Both remain very enjoyable, even if I do think there's a better way to do a contract bidding game every time I play Zahltag - the lack of evidence of one notwithstanding.

Finally a game day! Had one of my mini-convention days. It was an awesome turnout with nearly every table full in the afternoon.

Deep Sea Adventure Had fun with a 6 player game to start the day off. Lots of treasures didn't quite make it back to the submarine.

The Princes of Florence One of my all time favorites. This classic auction game still plays great. Always interesting to play with new people. We had a really close game that I eeked out with a couple of points. They let me win a prestige card in the last round which I was able to maximize.

Peloponnes Another auction based game with the tried and true civ theme. We had 2 disasters come up early then a long period of growth.

Medina The new edition is very nice but some people might have trouble telling the brown and purple buildings apart. I'm not sure I'll play with the tea tiles which allow you to skip a turn.

The Castles of Burgundy

Age of Industry with Japan map which works great for 3. Not quite as good an economic game as Brass but it works well. Was another close game that I came in second.

Loony Quest newish acquisition that tries to be an analog version of an arcade game. Basically you have a set amount of time to draw on an overlay where you think the goals are from a central map. Works fairly well and is a fun, silly filler. I think you have to make your game sound effects to really enhance the game

Seasons

Cacao another new acquisition. This is a simple tile placement game. Light but pleasant. Played with two but am interested to try with 3.

Arboretum I'll have to pick this one up. Love the illustrations. Kind of a set collecting game with a tile/card placement aspect

Games played at EGG Apr 4 with additions from other BGGers who attended

Monday night at LoB

Started off the evening with Deus. I feel that I am really getting this game now. After a rocky first couple of games, I am winning it quite consistently. I was playing against three newbies, so I guess it should have been expected. The three of them all finished within a few points of each other.

My tips for Deus, there are a lot of opportunities during the game to score points, it’s very easy to get fixated on the end game scoring. If there are points available, take them.

The end game points from Temples are important, but I think some players build their temples too early, once you have built them, you need to get the cards to do the builds to fit in with the temples. I prefer to leave the temples till later in the game and try to get ones that fit with what I have already done.

Second game was my second game of Elysium. This I have not got yet. A second place finish was not quite good enough. The game is pretty straight forward, you acquire cards for your domain, where they can be used for various actions and abilities. Too score points you need to transfer your cards from your domain to your Elysium. You have a limited amount of transfers and money (you have to pay to transfer) can be tight.

In both game I have played so far, one player used the Apollo powers (all the cards in the game are aligned with one of the Greek gods), to get lots of extra cards. The player with lots of extra cards won both games.

Acquisitions Baseball Highlights: 2045 and City Hall

Sorry to have been away so long, folks. I think you'll see below the main reason why. It's not you, it's me!

Acquired:

Despite not gaming much, we were in Boston for a long weekend and our hotel just happened to be around the corner from a nice FLGS, so we picked up 3 games:

Pandemic: Contagion
Skull
Pleasant Dreams

Plays:

These are my face-to-face plays from 2/9 - 4/9:

The Resistance: Avalon 8
Cards Against Humanity 1
Cards Against Humanity: Fifth Expansion 1
Cards Against Humanity: First Expansion 1
Cards Against Humanity: Fourth Expansion 1
Cards Against Humanity: Second Expansion 1
Cards Against Humanity: The Bigger, Blacker Box 1
Cards Against Humanity: Third Expansion 1
Pandemic: Contagion 1
Skull 1
Trekking the National Parks 1
Two by Two 1

Yep, that's it. For two months. Depressing, no?

Now clearly there was one bright spot there, and it's when we were doing a weekend away for a friend's birthday, and he really wanted to learn Avalon. The group got so addicted, we ended up playing it 8 times in one night. Borderline insane, but these were all actors, so they were very into it!

For new games, I'm not so hot on Contagion, but the scoring listed on the cards is very confusing, so we realized halfway through we were doing it wrong. So it deserves another play. Meanwhile Skull only took a round for everyone to catch on, and was definitely fun. I expect we'll bring it out often as a fast filler.

We did get to do Trekking with 4 players this time, and it worked just as well as it did with 2. In our experience blocking another player's movement isn't likely to become a factor unless you had the full player count (6).

Anywho, I'm hopeful that our opportunity to play games this past weekend will stoke our fire a bit to try and play more in the coming weeks. And I'll be striving hard to keep up more with y'all on here!

Games Played (3/30 - 4/4)

Titan x5
These were all 2p games against my son. It became obvious that he picked up on something a lot quicker than I did, because he clobbered me pretty consistently. That made it a lot more fun for me.

A Touch of Evil: The Supernatural Game x2
We played this twice with 4 players, in cooperative mode. I suspect the game is better in the standard semi-cooperative style. Otherwise, there are not enough truly interesting decisions and its inferior by a lot to Eldritch Horror, and too similar in other ways. On the whole, it was a bit disappointing. But I think if I played it by the original rules there could be a game there. However, my deep suspicion is that you end up going to the 4 special locations and draw cards, no matter what else is going on....and either you draw good cards or you don't. That's the game.

Crokinole x1
I pulled my board out for my birthday party and taught a bunch of people how to play. It was neat to see some kids discovering the game for the first time.

Dixit x1
Played with the kids. I think I may have won this time, which I don't remember ever happening before. I always get a kick out of what kinds of story my daughter comes up with for her pictures.

Sumo Ham Slam x1
A family battle royale. There were no survivors.
