Over the last few years through the 4G, we have witnessed the generosity of the BGG community as several members have stepped up to give a prize to a lucky participant each month. We have also seen the generosity of the BGG community over the years with several fundraisers, whether they be auctions for charity, board game marathons, or other such endeavors. This month for the 4G, I would like to do something a little different from usual and give a game to some type of charity or organization.

The requirement to enter this month's contest is simple. Select a game (something that is in print/easily available and less than $50) that you would like to donate to some type of charity or organization. It could be a local school, children's hospital, assisted living home, or any other good cause. Try to make sure that the game fits the needs of that organization, taking into account playing time, difficulty, etc. Post that game to this GeekList and answer the questions that are posted below.

This month's prize will also be a little different. If your entry is randomly selected, the game you posted will be mailed to you (from CoolStuffInc if located stateside, other arrangements will be made if the winner is international). You will also receive a surprise from your wishlist for yourself. You will be expected to present the game you posted to the organization or cause that you listed. If you are able to and willing to go the extra mile and teach how the game is played, that would be fantastic!

If you can not think of any local organization that you would like to donate a game to, but can think of an organization that you would like to donate money to, there is an alternative. Still post a game on this wishlist and the organization you would like to donate to. If you are the winner, you will be expected to create an auction for that game and donate the proceeds from that auction to the organization, so make sure the game that you choose is something that somebody would want to buy!

Since this month's edition of the 4G got off to a little bit of a late start, the winner will be randomly selected on Sunday, May 3. Please post any questions in the comments section.

Questions for 4G - April 2015:
1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?

3) Where are you located?

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?

6) Anything else you would like to add?

UPDATE:
We have a winner!

"TTDG" will also receive a surprise from his/her wishlist. (Make sure the list is up to date!)

As for the rest of you, I wish I was able to provide for every one of these great charities! It has been fun and inspiring discovering new charities and seeing the recommendations from you all. If you feel the urge and have the means, I encourage you to brighten the day of the people at your nominated charities/organizations by giving them a bit of gaming fun!

3) Where are you located?
In Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?

Walking through the cherry and apple blosoms.

1) My local Library. They recently started up a monthly board game day at the library and it would be nice if they had some games people could play there so the game days aren't as dependent on the more hard core gamers showing up.

2. King of Tokyo because it's a game the staff could easily teach and is enjoyed by most who play it, gamer & non-gamer alike.

3. Iowa

4. I enjoy sitting outside and reading when I have the time.

5. I played Alien Frontiers on my porch last year.

6. Good luck with the contest, it's exciting that the broader community will win regardless as to who actually wins here!

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?
Waltham House (http://www.thehome.org/site/PageServer?pagename=programs_wal...) - it's a home for LGBT youth who aren't safe or welcome at home anymore. Everyone should have a safe place.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?
Forbidden Island. Part of me feels like I should be choosing a larger game, but I really like this game. It's easy to learn, but has a lot of replayability. It took us 50ish games (guessing, since it was before I tracked our plays) before we got a bit bored with it.

3) Where are you located?
Boston, MA, USA area

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?
Play in the garden or go for a walk in the woods.

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?
Yes. We played a number of games on the rooftop of our apartment building when we lived in NYC. (I really miss that view.) Forbidden Island got the most plays, probably since the tiles were not very likely to be blown around. The most recent though was last summer here, when we took our table outside and played Fantasy Frontier.

6) Anything else you would like to add?

This is a very fun idea. Thank you for your generosity.

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?
Probably the Jack Vasel Memorial Fund. I've been supporting them for a couple of years now because I like giving back to this community.

Other gaming related charities I support:
Child's Play: I run a charity poker tournament for them every December
Extra Life: I run a 24 hour board game marathon for them every July

Other non-gaming related charities I support:
Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando: Annual member and have adopted 3 dogs
The Trust For Public Land: Annual member
Operation Giveback: I organize a race team every year

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?
I would donate Roll for the Galaxy to the auction, because my "free international shipping" draws lots of overseas interest and it is my understanding that this game hasn't made it to a lot of countries yet ... which is a shame!

3) Where are you located?
Orlando, FL, just a handful of miles from Cool Stuff!

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?
The weather is nice year round in Florida. But when the water warms up, the beach is only an hour away!

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?
Several years ago I played Chess on a half-life-size board on Key Largo. More recently than that I played Talisman on my porch a couple of years ago.

6) Anything else you would like to add?
Thank you to our volunteer!

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?

I'm generally a believer in effective altruism, so I'd auction the game and give the proceeds to Against Malaria Foundation, as it currently tops Givewell.org's list of most effective charities.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?

Since I'm auctioning the game rather than donating it, I selected Caverna for the high price tag, basically.

3) Where are you located?

Fairfax, VA

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?

The Virginia Super Spartan (an 8 mile obstacle race) is an annual tradition for me.

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?

I actually just played Hive outside on a date last Wednesday.

6) Anything else you would like to add?

I used to think cosmology was serious business, but then I found out it's chortles all the way down.

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?
My local library. They have a nice little stack of board games available for play down in the teen area but it's mostly classic abstract games, some kids games, and apples to apples. It would be great to get an introduction to modern designer games onto their shelf.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?
King of Tokyo because it's got simple rules that people in a library can pick up and learn having never seen it before and it's got a super enticing theme.

3) Where are you located?
Near Portland, OR

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?
Just walk! Also started getting a little into kayaking last Summer, almost went last weekend but the person I was going to go with was too busy. Soon though!

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?
I certainly have, though not recently. I know I've played chess with my uncle out on the porch of our cabin at a family reunion a few years ago, don't know of any specific examples off the top of my head.

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?
There is a local activity house for youth, aimed at providing friendship and activities for teenage boys and girls, positive influences from both peers and responsible adults.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?
Nations: The Dice Game plays quickly, yet has a lot of depth to it. It scales well across its full compliment of players. The game is easy to learn and manages the right balance between avoiding boredom and being too long. Plus, it involves dice!

3) Where are you located?
Provo, Utah

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?
Avoiding pollen ... On a more serious note, I am really fortunate to live in an area where there is a wide variety of things to see and experience. I love going on hikes or just taking the kids for a picnic at a random new place to discover. We might bring Kubb and play a game or three.

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?
I have, although I tend to avoid playing games outdoors. The most recent one was Pow Wow.

6) Anything else you would like to add?
Great idea for this month's giveaway! As always, thank you for your generosity. Even if I don't win, the giveaway reminds me to be charitable and to think of others more often.

1) I'd like to do an auction for the American Liver Foundation. A little over a year ago my Dad's younger sister died of cirrhosis of the liver and he asked that I donate here for his Christmas present. I don't make all that much money so I made a humble donation and I'd love to do more.

2) I chose Sheriff of Nottingham to donate, I recently had a chance to play this and I watched the table top for it and it is just a blast! It just happens to be a very clever game and you don't even have to lie!

3) Auburn, CA, 95603

4) Succumb to my allergies and wallow in bed because I can't stand spring!

5) I honestly think it might have been Magic when I was still in highschool, probably 2001...... I cannot think of anything after that.

6) Love and Peace!!!!

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?

The Intensive Children Care of the local County Hospital (department of oncohaematology, bone-marrow transplantation and neurology). I spend enough time there with my daughter to see that they need every single moment to take their attention away from their condition. They don't have any games there, so we usually spend the time with colouring or creative activities. These are fine, but they need an adult to conduct the activity. Hopefully a boardgame would free the adults, and let the children enjoy gaming.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?

That's a good question. There are children there from newborns up to 14 years old. I don't know too many children's boardgames, but I tried to find one that is easy to understand, fun, but hard to argue about. They will be there together after the games, so it wouldn't be advisable to have any problematic events.
Game text should be few, it would be better if there were none. I can translate the rules and print them in Hungarian, but there are children who are too young to read, so it would be harder for them to participate.
First I though of Activity, but then I realized that getting a Hungarian version wouldn't be too easy abroad. They might also need a nurse to read them the tasks if they are too small.
The only other game I came up with is Camel Up, it has no game text, but then I'm not sure if smaller children would understand how to play it.
The other games I know are not very interesting, or they are easy to argue about.
So I'm really open to any suggestions if you know childrens games, especially if you have experiences with them.
In the mean time I've realized that the drawing and acting parts are not ideal for the kids, several of them would be hindered by their tubes coming out of them.
Max was recommended as a good game, so I go with it.

3) Where are you located?
Miskolc, Hungary (Europe)

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?

Taking walks in the local mountains.

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?

While board games we didn't play, we used to play role-playing games in the mountains. Carrying more than a few sheets of paper and a handful of dice would have been inconvenient.

6) Anything else you would like to add?
This charity is a good idea, and a nice thing to do.

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?

I would go with the auction for charity option, and I would donate to the incredible work done by Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?

I think I would pick King of New York. I haven't played it, and I'm not a fan of King of Tokyo, but it seems very popular so I think would be well received in an auction.

3) Where are you located?

Queensland, Australia

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?

Read a good book with a glass of red wine.

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?

I played Hive outdoors with my husband over the Christmas break.

6) Anything else you would like to add?

My answer to No. 4 also happens to be what I did this afternoon.

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?
I would want to help out Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?
Since they don't really need games as much as money, I would take the auction route. I figure Mice and Mystics goes well with the big cat theme.

3) Where are you located?
Middleton, WI

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?
Big fan of zoos myself.

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?
Nothing really comes to mind. Maybe some kind of basic card game, like Euchre.

6) Anything else you would like to add?
Always nice when things like this work out and money goes towards helping people (or animals) feel better.

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?

Friends of the Children - Portland. The reason why is because board games have had a profound effect on my life. I would be so excited to know that I helped out a child in need. All the while introducing them to the board gaming world.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?

King of New York. This is one of our families favorite games.

3) Where are you located?

Portland,OR

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?

I love to go hiking with my family in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge.

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?

I have played outdoor in the past. Most recent outdoor game was played last year at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. My wife and I were on our honeymoon. We sat down and played Splendor amongst the giant redwoods.

6) Anything else you would like to add?

I like the change of pace here. This is a really great idea.

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?
I'd probably give to the local Battered Women's Shelter - those women are often running out of a really bad situation, with kids, and anything to take their mind off of their situation would be helpful.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?
King of Tokyo - accessible to most kids of Elementary age, appealing theme, easy to explain, and plays quickly.

3) Where are you located?
DFW area, TX

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?
Camping, walking, watching the kids play at the park.

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?
We've tried, but as we're more a fan of games involving cards and other lightweight bits this tends not to work well. Best we've done is games that are almost purely dice with maybe a scoresheet that we can put on a clipboard.

6) Anything else you would like to add?
Look forward to reading the other responses. Seems like this will be an interesting list.

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?

I would like to donate Kingdom Builder to my local college library, Marietta College. I work at the college and have collected, and donated about 10 games to the collection. I'm trying to bring board gaming to the students, and make the hobby grow. Plus it's a small town, and there's not exactly a lot for the kids to do anyway.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?

I would like to donate Kingdom Builder because I think that it has the right depth to complexity ratio. None of the college students, that I know of, have much experience in board games. The Resistance, Dominion, and other games have already been donated.

3) Where are you located?
Marietta, Ohio.

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?

I hate going outside normally, but I love taking my toddler to the playground and playing with her.

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?

I have played Alhambra outdoors. The tiles, and cards are heavy enough to withstand a light wind.

6) Anything else you would like to add?
This is a great idea for a thread. It's so great that the prize will be going to an organization instead of an individual.

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?

I would do Children's Memorial Hospital if I could, otherwise I would use JVMF Auction as my backup plan.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?
Ticket to Ride

I feel cheap picking this, since others already have, but I feel like it is the greatest of gateway games, so it's perfect.

3) Where are you located?
Minneapolis, Minnesota

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?
Camping!!!!!!

Lots of times, when camping! Played Bohnanza not too long ago on a camping trip.

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?
The Dream Center is an after school program for under-privileged kids that has done an amazing job loving on the children in my area. The leaders attend the same church as me, so I've gotten to see it grow from original conception to the semi-state funded program that it's become.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?
Loopin' Louie as most of the kids are elementary aged and it wouldn't need much time investment on the teachers' parts to get it setup and running for the kids.

3) Where are you located?
Franklinville, NC

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?
Disc golf! I usually go with my family, which tends to make for a nice hike with a side goal mixed in.

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?
Yep, though it's been ages, so can't really recall what was last played outdoors. Back in my high school days I used to carry around a wooden chess board in my backpack and would set it up beside me while I ate lunch. Often times friends or kids I didn't know would stop by and play a game. Ended up starting a chess club after I had enough regulars.

6) Anything else you would like to add?
I've started demoing for my FLGS every other week and run a Facebook group to coordinate what games I have available. The only regulars so far are my friends, but it's slowly gaining more interest from other locals.

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?
Since I don't know any organization worth of my time/effort where I live, I would gladly donate to the Jack Vasel Memorial Fund.

EDIT 04/21/2015: Just found out that my local library has launched a gaming group program (to be opened at the end of the school period, like mid-June). I jumped right into it as a sort of part-time responsible| laugh Now, I'll donate this game to said library.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?
Terra Mystica, because it's a great game, and a lot of people shows interest in it.

3) Where are you located?
Mantua, northern Italy

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?
Well.. since my first favorite thing would be censored modest, I'd stick with my second favorite... Board Gaming!

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?
Of course! My most recent outdoor-played board game was Caylus. (Also played D&D 3.5 edition, but it is not srictly a board game )

6) Anything else you would like to add?
Thanks for the chance!

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?
I would like to donate a game to Youth Opportunities Unlimited. They help youth become contributing members of the community through education and employment, and work with partners to maximize opportunities for youth. http://www.you.ca/

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?
I would like to donate Airlines Europe to them as I think that it's an interesting mix of gateway economic game that adds in commodity speculation and stock holding.

3) Where are you located?
St. Thomas Ontario

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?
I can't narrow it down to just one thing as I enjoy doing many things outside but with the good weather coming I do think about camping and going to a cottage and the activities associate with those things.

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?
I don't think that I've ever played a board game outside as I'd be worried about losing parts and/or getting things dirty. The only thing that I would generally play would be cards (Euchre, etc.).

6) Anything else you would like to add?
Very much enjoy concept for this months contest. It's nice to know that the end result of this contest will be helping people out.

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?

Huntington Hall USO Center, Newport News, Va, it assists the military personal assigned to new construction and overhauls of Navy ships, located within the bachelor enlisted quarters, this is in walking distance of the shipyard, not in the best section of town. Absolutely nothing here to do outside of work.

The USO developed a mobile "hard shell boxed" entertainment gaming system, basically Xboxes, for troops to carry in the field and local USO sites may have just the standard boxes.

While this is nice, sometimes less is more. Certainly a board/card game is more "social" and a good change of pace and break for the "video generation" even if they don't know it at first.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?

Some copies of Rio Grande's Bohnanza, why, gateway game, small, compact, all cards so small table friendly, cheap to replace, to have multiple copies of, easy to understand, supports large number of players per deck, have not found anyone that dislikes this simple game, you get "where did you find this thing". Runners up to donate in the class of "board game" would be Lords of Waterdeep or Airlines Europe. Why? Both poster child for gateway games.

3) Where are you located?

Newport News, Va

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?

Fly fishing

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?

No

6) Anything else you would like to add?

Rice and grains of sand, preferably at night.

1) What charity (preferably local to you) would you like to donate a game to and why?

Seattle Children's Hospital, as supported by our quarterback, Russell Wilson. I recently had a baby back in Oct 2014. She has no health issues but now having a child myself, I can see the potential struggles, stress, etc. that can come if you have a sick child. I know the hospital has a game room for the patients so I think they can use a new board game to keep the children entertained while staying in the hospital.

2) What game would you like to donate to that charity and why?

Animal Upon Animal
I think this is a great game for children most ages. Fun little game for the children to play while staying in the hospital. Easy to learn, easy to play.

3) Where are you located?

Auburn, WA

4) Since springtime is here or at least nearly upon us, what is your favorite thing to do outdoors in nice weather?

Go on walks with my family and dog.

5) Have you ever played a board game outdoors, and if so, what is the most recent one you have played outdoors?

I actually haven't. Once I buy a patio table, I sure will!

6) Anything else you would like to add?

If I win, I wonder if I can get Russell Wilson to present this with me.

1 & 2. My local library has a circulating game collection, and received a copy of Flash Point: Fire Rescue to add to its collection back in September or October, courtesy of Mr. X. (In fact, I keep a Geeklist of their collection contents, for several reasons.) The one thing I know they would really like to add to the collection is The Resistance.

(I'd love the opportunity to jump-start a circulating collection in the children's department there, but that would take significantly more effort & buy-in from the department head. She's not opposed, but we haven't had a kid-free opportunity to discuss whether it's feasible for them.)

3. I'm located in Urbana, IL -- roughly 2.5 hours south of Chicago and about 2 hours straight west of Indianapolis.

4. My preferred springtime outdoor activity is riding a bike. The last couple summers, my kids and I have used bikes as our primary method of transportation. (Since the Munchkin, age 5, is now able to ride herself and too big for the bike seat, that may get curtailed some this summer.)

5. I've played board games outside, although not for years and years. The last time I can really recall doing so was a partial game of Axis & Allies, back when I was a tween.

6. If the current Mr. X is the same Mr. X. who sent Flash Point, he's free to GM me privately to let me know that since my library has previously benefited from Flash Point that I'm disqualified from entering for this month. My feelings will entirely not be hurt. (I nearly didn't enter for that very reason, but the drawing is 3 days after my birthday, so why not?)
