Welp, it's time to get with the "in" crowd and just keep my solo gameplay exploits on the website I'm lurking on 99% of my free time anyway.

I'll add neat things like colors and stars and icons once I've figured out how this all works and what I want to put on here. It'll be wiz!

(Side Note: It will probably not be all that wiz.)

Shamelessly ripped off from other great solo trackers like Shacky's and Mo's. Go look at theirs, they're both way better than this one. Plus they win more games than I do. But this will let me track goals and such.

(Side Note: Will I meet those goals? Not on your life, buddy. Doesn't hurt to have ambition, no matter how quickly abandoned though.)

These are just the games I'm interested in tracking, for whatever reason. Tracking all of my plays for all of my solo games would A) drive me insane, B) suck the life out of gaming, and C) be ridiculous. Also, games may appear and disappear as I gain or lose interest in tracking them. The Internet: Where Things Are Inconstant.

Let's track these things, sometimes, probably:

1) # of plays - Self-explanatory!
2) W/L/Score - As needed! By Quest/Mission/Scenario/Whatevs
3) Solitaire Rating - stars!
4) Best Thing - to me
5) Worst Thing - to me

The OFLGS was hawking a couple of these with a few expansions from their Kickstarter purchase, and after reading Kurt and Jack's thoughts on their geeklists my natural curiosity, trust in their opinions, and total inability to restrain myself saw it ensconced on my shelf for a future play.

The missing link between those old gamebooks I used to spend hours with rolling dice, dogearing pages, and writing down stats in and the interactive fiction and point-and-click adventure games I love to this day. 7th Continent is far more elegant for solo play than its brother-in-arms T.I.M.E. Stories, and provides a refreshing amount of player choice in the context of a cleverly guided (and sometimes disguised) narrative and a fascinating clockwork design. Some annoyances mechanically, but overall such a unique experience that hits a very particular nerve for me.

I'm still not entirely sold on the survival aspects of the game - I'd much rather have it tilt more towards the pure story/puzzle end of the spectrum - but the hand management is fun, the discovery is fun, and I'm hoping that as I learn to play better it turns into less of a struggle for survival and more of a journey through a story.

Let's take into account the fact that I've played this a LOT. Like, tons. So just because it's got no plays on here right now doesn't mean I'm new to this.

Solitaire Rating:

Best Thing: It's WWII squad based tactical combat that perfectly marries guided narrative to emergent story creation in a campaign framework that allows RPG-like progression of your squad. So, you know, perfect.

Worst Thing: Replayability suffers a bit if your memories of a particular scenario are too vivid.

Goals:

Complete base campaign:
Complete Move Out! campaign:
Complete Silver Star campaign:
Complete Purple Heart campaign:

The granddaddy of my collection, full stop. You know I love it. So let's just keep it here and occasionally I'll update my findings, working towards the eventual goal of defeating EVERY SINGLE GREAT OLD ONE IN THE GAME. I have all the expansions (and expansion to the expansions), so this should take roughly the next twelve years.

Solitaire Rating:

Best Thing: I'm completely unobjective when it comes to this game, so let's go with the wonderful, best-in-class flavor text and atmosphere, mixed with the truly absurd narrative possibilities, as my nun getting hired as the police deputy wielding a flamethrower as exhibit A.

Worst Thing:
Everything you've heard about it being fiddly and expansions bogging down the gameplay is true. And I don't care.

Looks like the rules are just a two-pager, so let's see if this one hits the right notes. I have no idea how replayable, fun, or good this game is but ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances, as they say.

Astra Titanus is a great example of how when it comes down to it, a tightly focused design with a sense of purpose can make up for not having minis, simulation-level rulebooks, grandiose gameboards, or a bazillion cards. The movement mechanic in the game makes each turn a delicious, desperate gamble. Somehow I've never managed to play through the whole scenario book, because I've never gotten tired of the first and second scenarios.

Solitaire Rating:

Best Thing: I'm always amazed at how such a simple ruleset manages to create such a huge, thematic decision space; I'm always immediately sucked right into my role as a fleet admiral, placing my bets on where the Titan will move next and hoping my forces are in the right place.

Worst Thing: Doesn't look like this one's getting a Gold Banner edition any time soon, which is too bad because the game tokens are kinda flimsy (but no worse than, say, Nemo's War).

Goals:

Resist the urge to immediately trade/sell/light on fire:

UPDATE:
Will not solo. Ultimately I couldn't find the fun or the personal connection in the game long-term, and while the game itself is solid and interesting, it never quite made the leap to being something I could legitimately enjoy. Sometimes a game just isn't for you, and this one isn't for me.

Hey, classics are classics for a reason, and while things like "decision making" and "strategy" aren't exactly in abundance here, I defy you to play a few missions and NOT get unreasonably attached to your plane and crew. Very procedural (almost to a fault), but it plays so quickly and creates so many tense moments and good stories that it's well worth embarking on a campaign once a year or so. So let's do that.

Solitaire Rating:

Best Thing: Once you get on a roll and play a couple of missions, the procedure becomes second nature; especially if you've got a crew or plane that's survived well into a campaign, that "one more mission" feeling takes over, and before you know it it's four o'clock in the morning.

Worst Thing: There are a LOT of charts to consult; 5 individual sheets, plus a few more printed on the board, and sub-charts of sub-charts. Also quite a bit of errata (on a chart, of course) - I think I've literally marked up every single sheet and certain sections of the board to remind me of when to take into account weather, wounds, etc. Which makes this copy "mine" in a way that feels personal.

I'm almost positive I'll never get a chance to play this face to face 3-player the way it was meant to be, as I'm pretty sure my Ameritrash group would simply look at me like I grew a third eye.

So let's see how engaging the solo play is - I've read reviews that the bots don't present much of a challenge, but at the very least it might be fun finding out. Also, I think may have officially crossed into the "collector" demographic, as more and more I find myself seeking out games that focus on very specific themes and subject matter I've not got anywhere else. I have plenty of great WW2 games; I have zero that make the political conferences and diplomacy the sole focus.

UPDATE - WILL NOT SOLO: So I'm currently engaged in an honest-to-God multiplayer game of this, and... wow. It's just terrific. So much so that I'm not sure I'd go back to the bots. There's an outside chance that down the road I'll take a look at Never Surrender - A Solitaire Scenario for Churchill for solo play, but I can't imagine getting the same thrill of the tabletalk (which has been hilarious), or the delightful excruciation of trying to figure out if the other two guys are going to debate that issue you secretly want, or if you can manipulate one of them into selecting an issue you want on the table, or... or... yeah. It's just that good. But I think I've been spoiled now by playing the game as it was meant to be.

It's hard to argue with folks that say this is the best squad-based WW2 combat board game of all time; it's a brilliant design, fast, fun, surprising gameplay, with the perfect amount of randomness to keep it from slowing to a crawl. I've only gotten to play this a handful of times face to face, but it's never been less than great.

Solo I've played a couple times, and I find by randomizing cards turn to turn it still plays well enough to be a good time, even if it does lose some of the surprise.

Mainly I'd like to just get more plays in aside from the first two scenarios, so it's on the list here, even though it's pretty far down on my queue at the moment.

Solitaire Rating:

Best Thing: The card play is the not-so-secret sauce here, keeping things off-balance and making every single turn a joy to think through and play.

Worst Thing: Seriously, the worst thing about this game is that I haven't played it as much as I'd like. I know that's a cop-out. But I find it really hard to find anything about this game that I don't like, other than the lack of a solo AI, and I can't exactly fault it for that, now can I?

Say what you want about SPI and Avalon Hill's... clinical approach to rulebooks, but dang if they weren't churning out great concepts in the 1970's. This is yet another AH classic I've lugged around forever and never once played. Let's crack it open this year, shall we? I mean, how badly aged can a 40 year old game be? (Don't answer that.) At least it's got a solo mode!

(Side Note: Listen, folks, this may be the year I drag EVERYTHING out of the closet. I mean, we may blow the dust off Kingmaker before 2016 is out. This is not an idle threat.)

(Additional Side Note: Kingmaker is awesome, and I will fight any man who says otherwise.)

Goals:

Form an opinion on whether I like it:

UPDATE: Done with this one. Played three more turns, and decided it's just too much work for too little reward. Could benefit greatly from some streamlining in the economics and unit calculations, as it's too paperwork-heavy and weirdly paced to get into the theme (unless you like "accounting middle manager in early 16th century Spain" as a theme).

Best Thing: The battle mechanic is not only more exciting than the usual SoS combat (instead of a d6 roll, it's now a d6 roll with chit pulling), it provides a nice change of pace in the turn sequence, which is probably why this feels like less of a grind to me than the other SoS games.

Worst Thing: At heart it's still a SoS game, which means the dice will kill you despite your best effort.

A gripping, fiendishly difficult game that I've taken to playing almost exclusively on VASSAL, thanks to the lengthy time to play and the somewhat arduous setup. I have the Tarawa edition as well, but I'm determined not to crack that one open until I've managed at least some sort of headway in this one. All my games to date have ended pitiably somewhere between turns 10 - 15. I'd love to at least be able to make it to the VP check at turn 16 (which I will of course fail). Still - love the system, the diceless combat and the weapon mechanic. Among Butterfield's finest.

Solitaire Rating:

Best Thing: I find the game utterly absorbing; the decisions on which stacks to give your measly two actions per turn to, the brilliant weapon combat mechanic that means every initial attack is fraught with tension; and the landing mechanic that accounts for drift and staged deployment.

Worst Thing: This thing is a bear to set up, and remembering the German fire rules can be tricky. It's a complex game, and frankly I'm still not sure how to actually win. Thanks to my terrible play, I've never had to worry about that. I would love to be in a position to care about VPs.

I've never played this. I might hate it. I might like it. Let's find out together, shall we? I'm not particularly taken with the theme (my feelings on zombies can best be summed up with a hearty ::yawn:: ), but this comes so highly recommended from the folks over at the Solitaire Games On Your Table list and the 1 Player Guild that I took a flyer on a used copy and the Director's Cut.

A unique game that puts players in the shoes of a noir private eye, attempting to win clues each round to piece together one of 12 cases. Offers Shadowrun: Crossfire-like quick playing symbol-matching cardplay in service to Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective-like deduction, all wrapped up in a bottle of bourbon and a haze of cigarette smoke. Although wired for co-op, the Official Solo Variant with a couple of tweaks makes this a fun little oddity with just enough P.I. flavor and a charmingly simple ruleset.

Thanks to a terrific solo variant (Redjak's Automated Monster Variant) this is eminently playable solitaire. Goblins, elves, a fireball here and there, maybe an odd skeleton or two - you know the drill.

Solitaire Rating:

Best Thing: It's a hack-n'slash RPG campaign with progression and great production. Scratches the ol' D&D itch nicely.

Worst Thing: The RAMV variant removes the Overlord cards entirely, so sometimes I feel like I'm missing out on one side of the game - kind of. To be fair, playing the Overlord isn't much fun anyway.

So, funny story.

I'd canceled my reservation for this at the OFLGS based on Jack's exquisite takedown and ensuing discussion.

Then, a good friend gave me an early Christmas present, and it turned out to be... this.

I'm honestly touched that they went to the trouble of A) remembering that I like Shadowrun so much (I apparently talk about that game a LOT) and B) seeking out a game store and purchasing this. This isn't a person who even normally PLAYS board games. So I couldn't outright reject it.

I'll get around to breaking it out and scanning the rules over the next week or two and give it a spin, very likely all the while wishing I was playing more Fallout or Imperial Assault or... Shadowrun.

Will it be disappointing? Will I need to consign it to the back of the shelf in case my buddy ever comes over and asks where it is? Will we have a rarely-seen-in-the-wild divergence of opinions between me and Jack? WHO KNOWS.

Love, love, love the art. It's an honest-to-god adventure game with a campaign system, which (surprisingly) seems to be rare these days, as all the focus is on dungeon crawlers. So let's take it for a spin and see what pops out. Dat art tho.

The streamlined take on FFG's Lovecraft Mythos, every bit as difficult to win as its predecessor and with a global setting rather than those New England towns of pure evil that people still live in for some reason.

Smarter than Arkham Horror in several ways, which isn't a slam on that prior game at all; it's just a new model, and both live comfortably (and permanently) on the game shelf.

Solitaire Rating:

Best Thing: The expanded focus on moving around the whole planet lends an air of epic stakes and broader consequences, in contrast to Arkham's (sometimes appropriate) claustrophobia.

Worst Thing: It takes just as long to set up as Arkham, which seems... weird.

Plays:
thumbsdown - Skids O'Toole/Harvey Walters vs. Abhoth - 2/12/15
thumbsdown - Patrice Hathaway/Lily Chen vs. Yog-Sothoth - 2/19/15
thumbsdown - Marie Lambeau/Leo Anderson vs. Hastur - 10/14/15
thumbsdown - George Barnaby/Sister Mary vs. Yig - 5/6/17
