Let's start from the worst case scenario. Have you ever had something happen to one of your games that caused it to be totally destroyed, or so close to it that you knew that if you wanted a playable copy, you'd have to buy a new one. I've been fairly lucky in this regard. I've only had this happen to card games where cards get ripped or (in one case) burned making the game unusable. And I'm sure that there are others who have some horror stories.

More and more these days, games are coming with fancy bits. And sometimes, these bits don't hold up to everyday usage...or children...or pets...or...well, you tell me. What specific game bits have you had that were there as much for chrome as anything (i.e., a simple counter or token would have sufficed) which have been destroyed? How much did it affect your enjoyment of the game?

What about games where you've lost components. How do you make up for it. For instance, somewhere along the line several rails and I think one marker from my copy of First Train to Nuremberg disappeared. I've kind of made due with pieces from other game or re-using things, and it's not ideal, and it bugs me.

Do you ever buy scratch and dent games or is a game looking pristine very important to you. If you "wear out" a copy of a game, do you buy another copy? And where did that dent come from, anyway?

So yeah, it's been busy, and I've been around, just in a "not wanting to deal with the geeklist" mode. And I've even avoided some game playing, however I still have been doing my Saturdays. Of course, for the next 2 weeks that won't happen, as I'm heading to the east coast Thursday for my mom's 80th birthday celebration and have partners' meetings the week after. So, not much gaming for a while. However, I did get roped into decide to go to BGG*FAM with some friends, so I'll get 4 intense gaming days in late May. And the weekend before is the wedding of a couple of gaming buddies of mine, and they are having it as a gaming convention/wedding weekend...so the games will come.

Anyway, last Saturday started with a couple of quick games of No Thanks! as we waited for our 4th player to arrive. I lost the 1st one badly, and won the second with a score of 60 or thereabouts. That's a pretty high winning score, but the other 2 players were something like 95 and 116. We then played Cthulhu Wars where I was Hastur and I was in a pissy mood (overtired) and getting frustrated because I kept missing desecration rolls. As a result, I was a turn or 2 behind the curve and never in serious contention. I still like this game, although I'm not obsessed with it. We then played the new version of Saint Petersburg (second edition) with just the base rules, so the only thing new to me was the market. I liked the market, it made me think differently. A couple of bad card deals (i.e., 3 aristocrats come out and the lowest costs 14) derailed my game and I came in 3rd. The morning group finished up with Tichu. My team won 1,000 - 0. Not because we took every hand, because every time the other guys called Tichu or Grand Tichu, my team ended up with bombs to derail them, and they fought to get out of negative the entire game.

The game shop was crowded for International TableTop Day, and that didn't stop me and another guy from monopolizing some space with 2 player games. First we played 4 games of Dungeons & Dragons Dice Masters: Battle for Faerûn. We both got the base set and then bought 10 packs and went at it. The other guy had a lot more experience than did I, and it showed as he trounced me in 3 of the 4 and won a squeaker in the 4th. That being said, I knew I didn't have the most efficient lineup on the field because I was just trying to get mechanics down more than anything. Good fun, though, and I look to play more.

Revenge was mine as we played 2 games of Tash-Kalar: Arena of Legends and I trounced him in both. I think he enjoyed it, though, as he went out and ordered a copy of it afterwards. After that, the IELLO rep who was there taught us a couple of games. Konito?, which I enjoyed as a light game with lots of laughs, and Kobayakawa which, despite winning handily, is not a game I'd play on a regular basis. Not terrible, just too many other good games out there.

No doubt about the highlight of the week. My wife and my daughter left me alone with my son last Sunday, and I thought well why not, let's try 1829 Mainline! I've had it for a while now, and I've yet to try it, and at least we can get started with the game and we'll see how it goes.

Well, it was amazing success, despite some confusion with the rules. My son loved it, and managed to win the game – 6390 to 6360 or so, so practically a draw. It took us about two and a half hours or so, which was quite thrilling for my son as well, as it was by far the longest game he has ever played.

He was quite the stockholder, thrilled by dividends and eager to develop his companies. For a long time we ran shared companies and I mostly suggested what kind of track he should build, and it went quite smoothly.

Pretty cool, and quite certainly not the last time we play the game.

On Thursday games, I got to try Schrille Stille, which has a cool gadget, but otherwise is a tad long and repetitive. Not a bad game, though, especially if played fast.

My son also was really interested in the Gipf games, we tried all of them (well, all I have) and he loved them. His favourites are Zertz, then Yinsh and Tzaar. We both dislike Gipf.

Couple of games on the iPad with my son and a close game of Qwirkle Cubes with my brother Tim and his wife Sue...which in hindsight was probably not the ideal game as he's one person in my family who can be crippled from excessive AP depending on the game, which was evident in this game both in deciding which dice to reroll and then where to play them. Still a fun time and a game I definitely enjoy much more than the original game.

 8   Splendor
 9   Russian Railroads

I got to play games!
Actually, I got to play games at a team tournament on International TableTop day.

I am most pleased by my first victory in Russian Railroads after 7 plays! It was my tournament game and as it was the game nominated by our team, we got an extra point. We finished 2nd of 4 teams by 1 point!!!, with me as the only winner in my team.

I also got to play Splendor the same day and enjoyed it very much despite being so simple. I love the tension build-up.
I sadly missed my own gaming club's 5th year anniversary (despite me being the president) due to my son getting sick.

My wife told me to still go to the pub, but family comes first, anniversaries come second.

Overall quite a good weekend.

No games played last 2 weeks due to being kept in hospital, also last weeks Amoeba GeekList missed thus.
Well, the good news is today I returned home, but still with couple week confinement to bed, so maybe after some days I will be already able to play something.

On Saturday, I went down to Don's house for a game day.

_7_ Roll for the Galaxy - This was with me, Anni, Don, and Derek; we had all played before. This is the third time I've played this, and in each of the two previous games I had major issues with my economy, so I was determined not to let that happen this time. My starting setup facilitated this too; I think I started with a green world. I was able to quickly follow that up with a yellow world, and eventually I got out a world that gave me a purple die, so I thought I had a nice little combo set up. So I spent some time alternating between getting income through trade and selling goods for a few points. I could have physically used some more dice though, that was definitely a limiting factor. However, while it felt like I was doing much better than I had in previous games, I wasn't getting out very many cards (mainly because I didn't afford to lose dice while I was waiting for them to come out), and I guess I wasn't accruing points as quickly as other players. I never saw any 6-point developments, which didn't help either. So, I came in last. Derek won by a large margin.

_8_ Castles of Mad King Ludwig - This was with me, Anni, Jay, and Lee; we had all played before. There was a communal kitchen bonus, and I started with a kitchen bonus card, so I decided to focus on kitchens. I think I spend a lot of money on it, but I got the big purple room that gives bonuses next to kitchens. So I spent the rest of the game trying to get lots of kitchens, and complete them. I got a few more purple rooms in the process too. I managed to score a whole bunch of in-game points with the purple rooms, and all of the extra turns didn't hurt either. While I did manage to draw a few more orange cards over the course of the game, I wasn't able to use them very well (I think I scored zero with one of them). So, while I had a decent lead going into end-game scoring, Jay managed to pass me with the end-game bonuses for the win.

_7_ Red7 - Same group here. Anni and I had played an abbreviated version of this several months ago where no one really knew what was going on, so this was kind of our first "real" play. I think I played pretty well, winning the first hand, and then coming in second for like the next four hands. Unfortunately, coming in second gains you absolutely nothing in this game. Anni came really close to winning, accumulating 29 of the 30 points needed to win the game, but unfortunately for her, Lee won big in the next hand, putting her at 30 points on the nose.

_9_ Terra Mystica - This was with me (Cultists), Anni (Dwarves), Tom (Witches), Shane (Chaos Magicians), and Erin (Nomads); Shane and Erin were new. Boards were distributed randomly, but we had our choice of sides--I picked the Cultists because I hadn't played them yet, and I thought it would be okay to play a race that was underpowered at a fairly inexperienced table. (Don mentioned later that there is some sort of "official" errata saying that the Cultists gain a power bonus when other players decline to give them a Cult track bump, but I didn't play that way.) I grabbed the priest income for my first turn role tile, just so I could jump 3 on the cult track and be eligible for the turn 1 reward (4 brown = 1 dig). Given that there was no reason to build a stronghold early, I built a temple on the first turn, and grabbed the points for placing a dwelling bonus. I burned some power for a dig on the first turn, and then was able to keep gaining power from other people (I think I went more negative in this game than I normally do), and by placing my priest per turn in the cult tracks. From there, I pretty much just followed what the round bonuses said I should do--I built dwellings when there was a bonus for them, trading posts when there was a bonus for them, etc. I would have run super short on money at the end of the second round, but fortunately there was a 1 coin per brown bonus then; I think that got me 7 coins. I was able to work both of my initial placements up to cities. The new players, Shane and Erin, weren't doing very well, but then announced that they had to leave in the middle of the game to go to some sort of dinner reservation, which was a little annoying. We just left their stuff on the board and played on. I looked to have a pretty dominant position on the score track as we approached the end of the game, but Tom managed to sneak in for a share of the largest group at the end (with Anni). Tom and I split the cult track pretty evenly, so he ended up winning by a few points.

_9_ Lewis & Clark - This was with me, Anni, Don, and Chap--Don and Chap were new. I bought a card early, thinking that maybe the ability might be useful (1 of each basic resource for 7 river moves), but mostly for the 3 indian power. Turns out it wasn't useful for the ability; getting one of each resource is harder than it seems. I got off to a pretty good start, shooting ahead, but the other players were able to catch up pretty well as they figured out the game. I kept on the lookout for a card that would help me get across the mountains, but I wasn't able to get anything, so I had to stick with getting horses and using the base movement card. I picked up a small indian canoe early, and after that I kept buying small goods canoes just to get different goods with which to make horses. My planning seemed to work pretty well, but Don, who actually did have a good card for the mountains, got ahead of me. I had a plan to get to the end of the race, but by the end, Don was more than a couple of turns ahead of me, and won.
