I'm headed to the May 5, 2015 Game Market in Tokyo, and to help me organize what I expect to see at that show, I'm pulling together this convention preview.

Note that the Game Market website has an extensive Japanese database of the games that will be available at this one-day show, and I'm not trying to replicate that database on BGG. Good heavens, no. Instead I'm highlighting titles that (1) mostly likely include rules in English or (2) at a minimum don't include a lot of Japanese text on the cards or other components, which means that I have some chance of being able to play them, while also focusing on (3) designers and publishers with strong track records and (4) games that are so out there that I'll want them anyway for their sheer artistic creativity.

Okay, so my qualifying standards might be a titch nebulous right now. We'll see whether I can tighten them up before the show opens, but I doubt it.

Let me know in the comments section about other games that I should be looking at during this trip — and if you can help in adding TGM games to the BGG database, please do so. Even if the descriptions are short, having something is better than nothing at this point as we know the games are coming out and more details will be available about them in the near future. Thanks!

Designed by:
Published by:
Number of players: 3 − 6
Playing time: 30 − 45 minutes
Suggested ages: 12 and up
Categories:
Mechanics:
Language:
Japanese
Description:

Since the beginning of time, two opposing forces have been the pillars of the universe and coexist in eternal balance. Our Goddess in her infinite wisdom has sent a group of Overseers to protect our world. They have the power to bend human traits to their will, and they will always battle between each other to create the perfect symmetry between virtues and vices of humankind. You will now choose whether to find the best balance — or completely crush it for your own good.

Overseers is a drafting and bluffing game with a twist. Each player represents an Overseer whose objective is to bend traits in their favor to create the most dominant combination of virtues and vices. The game has three main phases:

1] Drafting: Each player receives six cards at random from the deck, selects one of them, then passes the rest to the player sitting on their left. The goal is to build up the combination that will grant them the most victory points. Some cards grant points on their own, while others require the same type of cards to earn more points.

2] Judgement: All players place their five trait cards in front of them in two rows: two face down and three face up to show the cards they chose. Give the information available, the Overseers then discuss which player has the strongest possible combination. After deliberating, players vote for this person using their token. The chosen player must then admit or deny the verdict:

— If they admit having the strongest combination, they must then discard two cards from their combination.
— If they deny this, the showdown phase happens, with all players revealing their scores. If the chosen player has the strongest combination, they lose the two cards that grant the most points; if not, instead they take one additional card of their choice from the discard pile.

3] Scoring: Each player shows all cards in front of them, then calculates their score.

The game might have other phases depending on the type of overseers being played as each character has special abilities that can change the outcome of the game, such as being able to peek at another player's hidden cards, steal a card before the scoring phase, or transform one card into another.

At the end of each round, players secret their victory point (VP) tokens to keep their score secret, and after three rounds whoever has the most VPs wins.

Other Information: • Price ¥3,500

Players take turns in clockwise order and do one of the two actions:
(1) ask any one player if he/she sees any specific color OR letter in everyone's left OR right hands;

Description:

In Jungle Rumble, you're in charge of a herd of cats — yes, cats — and those cats must do your bidding in order to mine, build plantations, water your farm, and recruit more helpful kitties.

Each round, a number of action tiles are available. On a turn, a player chooses one of the actions, placing as many of her cats on it as she wants, with more cats leading to a stronger action. Each other player in turn can take the same action, but only at a strength of one cat. After each player has chosen an action, unchosen actions are sweetened for the next round, the start player marker rotates, then the next round starts.

Players need to grow their herd of cats in order to take additional actions, but you must also feed your herd or else the cats will wander off into the forest or who knows where. At the end of the game, players score for the size of their feline herd, the amount of water supplied to their field, their supplies of food and gold, and a few other things. Whoever has the most points becomes the champion of this vivid forest!

Other Information: • Price ¥2,800

• Yes, this game is a bit older than the others on the list, but I'm the arbiter of validity for this list, so it's in.

Description:

The monkey players in Viva! Coconots want to grab coconuts from the field, with those coconuts ideally lying in a straight line.

To set up the game, place the "Las-nut" card in the center of a 3x3 grid, then shuffle the other coconut cards and lay eight of them in the surrounding spaces of the grid, removing any unused cards from the game. The coconut cards have powers on them that come into effect when that card is active during the game.

The game lasts nine rounds. Each player has a deck of monkey cards numbered 1-10, and to start play, they each shuffle their deck, lay two cards at random face down in the front of them (looking at them whenever they like), then take a hand of three cards. In a round, the players look at the coconut card for this round (as indicated on the Las-nut card), choose a monkey card in hand, then reveal them simultaneously. If two or more players lay down the same card, they're out for the round. After taking into account the coconut's power, whoever played the highest card wins the round and places a token on the card.

The Las-nut card is claimed in the final round, with whoever has the highest total in the two cards set aside claiming it. (These cards can possibly be swapped during play.)

If a player has ever placed three tokens in a line on the grid, that player wins immediately. If this doesn't happen, whoever has placed the most tokens (with the Las-nut counting as two) wins.

Description:

A wealthy patron commissions a lovely landscape mural, hiring the greatest (and most competitive) painters in the world... you! Interfere with each other’s paintings and compete to win the world’s greatest treasure: Points!

On your turn, draw a card from the central display. If it is a Commission card, keep it at your side for scoring at the end of the game.

If it is a tree card, you may add it to any player's tree. If you make a contiguous limb of cards sharing one or more features, you score 1 point for each instance of those features in that contiguous group.

If you score more than 10 points in a turn, remove the scoring cards and the owner of the tree collects them as "pruned" branches.

Categories:

Language:

Description:

In Canals of Amsterdam, players take turns placing influence in the markets of Amsterdam and dividing the city with canals in order to take advantage of that influence and gain wealth.

Each player starts with a number of influence tokens valued 1-4, with the exact numbers dependent on the number of players. Twelve market tokens worth 4-8 are placed at random on the empty rectangular area representing Amsterdam. A single canal rings the city.

On a turn, the active player draws one of their influence tokens at random, then either:

  • Places it on an empty space on the board, or
  • Discards it, then places as many canals (wooden sticks) on the board as the number on that token.

When an area is enclosed that contains one or two market tokens, whoever has the most influence in this area gains all of the tokens as well as wealth (VP tokens) equal to the number of spaces in this area. If players are tied for influence, then they sum the market tokens and area wealth and split this, rounding down.

When all markets are controlled, or all players are out of tiles, or all canals have been placed, the game ends and the wealthiest player wins.

Canals of Amsterdam includes two variants, one in which each player starts with a single canal in reserve that can be used at any time on their turn and another in which players each have a hand of three influence tokens.

Publisher's summary:

Description:

Set up:
Pick a color.
Set up the bowling pin cards in a triangle like shown. Put your strike/spare cards off to the side. Hold your star cards in your hand.

Play:
Each player throws a card at their pins to see who goes first.
Whoever is touching the most cards gets to go first.
If there is a tie, keep throwing to someone gets more.

You take turns throwing your cards. Your hand can not go past the front pin of the pins in front of you.
The winner of the previous round goes first.
If you get a spare (win a round), then win another round. That spare becomes a strike, just flip it over.

Scoring:
Each round each player throws 3 star cards. Whoever touches the most combined cards wins a spare. If the player touches all the cards over the course of the 3 throws, they will get a strike card. First person to get 3 strike cards wins. All ties void each other out for each round.

Alternative.
If you want to add a new challenge use the numbers on the back of the cards to score points. You get points for the cards you land on. You can play to a predetermined score. Or you can win unless you have more points than your opponent.

User summary:
ドラゴン (DRAGON) is a doujin game by Japanese designer Kentaro Yazawa. In the game of DRAGON, players raise their dragons with the assistance of spirits.

You have four types of action cards to raise your dragon:
1)Pact: You make a pact with a spirit by spending money. The spirit raises your dragon's statistics (attack, health, or speed).
2)Pray: You pray to one of your spirits and/or one of your opponent's spirits, spending resources on them. The spirits use their own abilities for you.
3)Hunt: Your dragon goes hunting for food, and he can grow to the next stage by spending resources.
4)Rest: You gain money and resources, and retrieve all action cards you have played so far.

When the dragons have grown up, they fight each other by comparing their statistics. You gain victory points when your dragon defeats an opponent. The player with the most victory points wins the game.

Description:

The Roman Empire. An Empire so large and powerful its fame remains still today. In order to keep its vast territories under control, the Roman Empire sent out state managers to exercise its policies.

The players are one of these managers, in charge of one of the Roman cities, all aiming to become a prosperous and important city, like Rome, the glorious capital. Only the player who develops his city best, will earn the favour of the goddess Minerva and win the game.

The player who has the most Victory Points (VP) at the end of the game wins.

In order to gain VPs, the players will build military facilities to earn military fame, develop cultural facilities to assist cultural activities, and construct temples and layout the city so that it is worthy of its temples.

But all of this requires resources and gold. And only building impressive buildings won't get anyone far without any inhabitants. The players will have to build living quarters so that the other buildings can have an effect.

Description:

15 ○ 9 × is a two-player deduction game, with each player trying to deduce — and identify through card play — the pairs of cards laid down by the opponent.

The deck consists of 15 ○ cards and 9 × cards. Each player receives ten cards from the deck at random, then creates three pairs of cards, leaving the remaining four cards in hand. Each player now tries to correctly identify whether each pair of cards played by the opponent matches (in which case you need to play a ○ on the pair) or whether they don't match (in which case you need to play an ×).

Instead of making a guess, you can reveal one of the cards in one of your pairs, giving up information but delaying the need to guess.

Description:

In テトラコンボ (Tetra Combo), each player controls four colored blocks on a 4x4 game board. They alternate taking turns, moving one block on each turn in order to create tetrominos, a tetromino being a pattern created by four adjacent blocks. (Think of the pieces in Tetris, with five tetrominos being the only shapes possible.)

Each time that a player creates a tetromino — whether with their own pieces or with four empty spaces on the game board — that player scores a point for that particular type of tetromino. If you manage to create two more of a tetromino than the opponent, you win!

Description:

To set up ギシンアンキノトウ (Towers of Conspiracy), six four-sided towers are placed on the board, and for each tower, a player can see only two of the four sides. More importantly, each player sees the two sides that their opponent does not, and the sides of each tower are colored either yellow or black. Only six different combinations of yellow and black are possible — all sides yellow, three sides yellow, two opposite or adjacent sides yellow, one side yellow, and zero sides yellow — and players try to collect as many yellow sides as possible.

To do this, they place colored blocks on the towers, serving as both bluffing devices and ways to claim towers, and at the end of the round, each player claims two towers.

• First released in 2012, with a new edition released at the Nov. 2014 Game Market, which is new enough for my purposes.

Description:

Three robots are on the game board in Robotory, and to win a player must have at least two robots on their side of the game board when the supply cubes of one color are exhausted. On a turn, a player either places a cube of either color from their personal supply onto the game board, takes cubes from the supply, or moves a robot; to move, a robot "eats" cubes of the appropriate color, with two of the robots eating cubes of only one color and the third robot eating cubes of both colors.

The 2015 edition of the game, PakuPakuPark, replaces the robots in a factory with animals on a farm, with the dog eating ham, the cat eating fish, and the pig eating both foods.
