For the longest time I had only ever played the classic board games (Monopoly, Clue, Chess, Checkers, Etc.) and video gaming had pretty much taken over my "Game Time" as an adult.

Last Christmas my brother in-law introduced me to Ticket to Ride (Europe) and Settlers of Catan when my wife and I were home for the holidays and it awoke a love of board games that I never realized I had.

Since the start of the year I have slowly been building my game collection, to the point that I now have 10 whole games in my possession - and I thought I'd share my first 10 games with the BGG community.

Ticket to Ride was the first game that I bought. After playing TTR: Europe over the holidays my wife and I both love how easy this game is to introduce to our friends. It's quick to set up, easy to explain the rules and everyone always has fun when playing it.

The only downside to this game is that we primarily play with just my wife and I, and when playing with 2 every so often we will have games where we have no overlapping routes and there is very little interaction between us.

Which leads to the second game we bought...

Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries was purchased shortly after we bought the original. This version of the game pretty much resolves all of the minor issues we had when playing with 2 people - in every game we have conflicting routes which means the game is much more strategic and there is plenty of interaction.

We haven't played this with 3 yet, but I can only imagine the carnage on such a tight map.

After buying our first two games from Amazon and our local Barnes & Noble I began researching whether there were any local board game stores that I could check out. I quickly discovered that, living in NYC, I actually work pretty close to The Compleat Strategist.

Upon discovering this I made my way to the store and spent a good 15-20 minutes browsing the impressive collection - obviously looking a little overwhelmed one of the employees asked me what sort of game I was interested in, and upon hearing that I mostly game with my wife suggested several co-operative games - Pandemic being the first.

Both my wife and I love this game to bits...we find it incredibly fun and engaging (does everyone else give the four viruses real names?) - we have subsequently introduced several friends and family members to this game and everyone loves it. I think right now this game has the most plays in our collection.

We bought Forbidden Desert at the same time as Pandemic, but have only played it once since we picked it up. I put this down largely to our love of Pandemic, but since we bought this we have moved apartments so haven't had a lot of time to dedicate to gaming.

We definitely enjoyed our one play, though found the rules a little confusing at first - I am sure once this one comes back out it will feature more frequently.

The fifth game I bought was Citadels. I have been looking for small, compact games that travel well and can be played well with two, but also scales up with 4-6 people.

Citadels appears to fit the bill pretty well - we have only played it once (again due to limited play time) but I thought it was great and the fun would definitely increase with 4 or 5 people fighting for the victory.

In at #6 is San Juan - a game which, unfortunately, we have not played yet (I don't know why I am still buying games when I own some that I haven't played yet...but that seems to be pretty common for people on BGG!)

We will hopefully be able to play this over the next few weeks now that real-life stuff is calming down again - I really like the game from playthroughs and reviews that I have read so hopefully it goes down well!

I read a lot of mixed reviews about Machi Koro - first I saw this popping up as the hottest game of the month, it was being played heavily and rated very highly...I thought GREAT! this seems like a really good game and went out and picked it up.

Before I had chance to break it out I then started seeing a lot of complaints about dominant strategies and the game being very easy to win once you had figured out what this strategy was...strangely there did not seem to be a consensus on what that strategy was, so I figured I would judge for myself.

My wife really likes the theme to this game so we decided to enjoy a bottle of wine and a few games one Saturday night. In total we played three or four games, and both really enjoyed it - we did not find any one dominant strategy and happily explored the different routes to victory.

I can totally see if you allow one person to pick up all of a particular card that they would have an advantage over the other person (or people), but surely the point is you don't let them do that?

Either way, we really like the game and will be playing it frequently in the future!

The last three games that I bought were all picked up within the last week, so none of them have been played yet - we struggle to find time during the week due to long work hours...but hopefully we will get to play one or all of them over the next few weeks.

I really like the look of Jaipur - I have watched a few online games and the theme seems very fun, light hearted and competitive (without being argumentative). I think my wife will really enjoy the theme and gameplay so we will see how this one goes...

Edit: After finally breaking this out two weekends ago this has become one of our favorite games. We have managed 3 or 4 plays and love the intricacies of holding cards for higher bonuses, taking the high scoring goods early, etc. and can see this one coming out on many more game nights in the future!

Through all of my research on which games I'd like to add to my collection, Lost Cities continuously came up as something I should definitely own.

I had been waiting for this to become available for the last two or three months - the only place I could see it was Amazon for a ridiculous $100 - until the BGG community let me know that it was back in stock at Barnes & Noble. With that knowledge in mind I swiftly took myself to the nearest store and picked it up for a cool $16.

I am super excited to play this game - I love the risk vs. reward concept and am sure that my wife will enjoy the theme and gameplay.

Edit: I can honestly say after we got this on the table that it has lived up to the hype (that I had built). Possibly my wife's favorite of the games we have bought, we love the strategy of the game. I saw a few people have struggled with the scoring but I actually found it to be really straight forward once I sat down and explained it.

The 10th game in my collection is Love Letter. I picked this up primarily as a game to travel with, but from what I have read and seen this could actually become a regular feature on our game nights.

I will have to update these "not played" games as and when I get to them, but I am pretty happy with the variety and range of games that I picked up.

What does everyone else think?
