Welcome to this week's Game Chat League Amoeba discussion group!

If you found us randomly (via subscription, perhaps), you're welcome to join in with constructive conversation -- we're friendly symbiotes in real life, though vicious competitors at the game table. (Pound for pound, the amoeba is the most dangerous predator on earth!) Read the links above for more info. (If you're shy, just thumb the list so we can see who's stalking us :-) )

Sorry about the late list. I was a bit off-guard. As for the topic - I'm sure we've discussed print'n'play games before, but not in a while. So, let's do that now.

What do you think of Print'n'Play games? Do you build them yourself, do you play them if someone else builds them?

How have you found the general level of PnP games? I'd assume many of them are not-so-good, thanks to the lack of publisher editing the game, but I'm sure there are gems among them. How to find those gems?

Not much gaming last week, since I returned home from hospital just Friday. But on Sunday first boardgaming in a long time happened. Starting with nice and here mostly forgotten abstract, and finishing with something longer - Ticket to Ride game, where I was completely crushed. Abstracts still don't and won't get popularity around here, but TtR expansion does almost nothing good for base game, except adding some extra routes.

Not a bad week! I played Age of Steam, that's quite something! Rust Belt map, for the first time in 12 years or so - I hadn't played Rust Belt since 2003.

Neuland was fun, too, I taught my son to play it. He liked it.

I attended the Gathering last week and created a GeekList to describe what I did. Here's a link so I don't have to try to repeat everything:

My favorite 2015 Gathering experiences

Later I'll make some comments more in line with what I usually post to the Amoeba GCL.

New to Me:

d10-6 Scoville

Return Visits:

d10-8 Small World
d10-7 Tanz der Hornochsen!
d10-8 Trajan

Musings:

I enjoyed Scoville although the blind bidding aspect doesn't greatly appeal to me. It is interesting to see how different groups play and whether people play "nice" or nasty regarding harvest potential. Letting someone go off on their own is probably not a good idea though unless everyone does it...

Small World was a brutal five player affair but twas quite a bit of good fun with good friends. We got too focused on a couple players who scored high on a couple turns and forgot about the person who scored consistently over the turns.

Was good to return to Trajan after a year absence or so. Got off to a slow start but came on strong at the end to win by 10 or so. The 9 point buildings were all empty and built by the end of the third season.

Tanz der Hornochsen! was pulled out when four students came over wanting to play a game. We had a fair bit of fun making fun of people stepping in the poop and talking about "happy" cows. I won late after one of the students had led almost all game.

I was on the east coast last weekend for my mom's 80th birthday celebration, so the only gaming I got in was with my nephews. I taught them Love Letter and we played 4 games of that, with the wins spread pretty evenly (2-1-1) and I think they liked it, although I think 4 games in a row, which was about 40 hands of it was enough for one day. Then I taught them Money!, a game I enjoy. We played one full game (i.e., 3 full rounds) of it and I won handily, although more by luck than great skill. Not quite as well received as LL, and I think they enjoyed it. This was my 1st time playing on the Fred edition, and I did like the giant cards. I'm still not sure it's worth the price.

I'm heading to Phoenix tomorrow for partners meetings for my firm, coming back late Saturday night, so unless there's gaming on Sunday, this will be a dry week for me.

My wife's brothers and family are in for about 10-12 days, and her sister in law loves games as well, so I'm getting more plays in than usual...

Cosmic Run was a game I pledged for at the pnp level on Kickstarter by Dr. Finn. It's a solid game, and gives players a number of options to use their dice, but for some reason has fallen a bit flat for me.

Best Treehouse Ever really caught me by surprise...I put the pnp together to give it a try after so many other pnp-ers were putting it together this month. It's a pretty good game for the 15-20 minutes that it takes to play, and has fired Sushi Go! for me. I just really enjoy the (sometime painful) decisions of which color room to choose and balancing that with what others are building and trying to balance that with the somewhat potential nasty scoring (where players can assign up to 2 colors to be zeroed out for scoring and 2 colors to be worth 2 points instead of 1).

Tried the basic solitaire version of Between Two Cities, and it works pretty well and I found it a fun puzzle to work at.

Antidote was brought home by my wife's sister-in-law, so we played two games of it, one basic and one with some of the expansion cards. I obviously do not get the deduction aspect of this game, as I scored the worst possible every single round...sigh.

.10. 6x For the Crown (4x Shock and Awe, 2x World is Round, 1x All the King's Men)
_8_ 1x Hanabi (with Avalanche of Colors)

The last two weeks have consisted mainly of two things: writing my dissertation prospectus, and playtesting the new For the Crown expansion. Suffice to say that both have turned out pretty darn good.
