Game in my collection it is likely to replace Specter Ops
Outcome Received.

My Thoughts Placeholder for the NEW third edition from Fantasy Flight. Absolutely stoked for this game.

The hype Eight years ago Mina Harker and her companions returned home from Castle Dracula believing that they had definitively banished the vampire Count’s evil presence from the earth. They were wrong. The King of the Un-Dead has now risen again to menace mankind. Throughout Europe wolves are behaving strangely, superstitious peasants are growing fearful, and mysterious deaths are proliferating. Tormented by uncanny dreams and haunting visions of nighttime travel and drinking blood, Mina has rejoined her former companions, now even more determined to find Count Dracula and destroy him once and for all.

In Fury of Dracula you undertake their perilous quest, hunting Dracula across Europe and battling him wherever he is revealed. Or you take on the role of the legendary Count Dracula himself as he seeks to thwart these pursuers and plunge the entire continent into an unrelenting and evil darkness.

A year on Sold. I just felt that the new editions rules were an abomination, and despite my best efforts I never got the hang of them.

Neat dice action selection mechanic and some decent decisions.

A year on Bought after the Con. Like the dice mechanisms very much, but there is a storm of iconography, and that combined with the beige looks meant I couldn't get this to the table more than once. Sold.

Received early November. Get to the table soon!

A year on I thought this was also a good but not great game. My gripes were with only one copy of the key/card for each cube type coming in the box, but the cube abilities not being memorable enough to remember without the help of cards. I also felt that there were some scaling issues depending on the lap count.

Game in my collection it is likely to replace None
Outcome First thing to pick up!

My Thoughts Love the theme! Running a rural french inn, where you are attempting to kill and rob your inn guests. You hire accomplices, build annexes to bury the bodies and try and avoid the police! Looks fun!

The Hype France 1831: In a remote corner of Ardèche, the little village of Peyrebeille sees numerous travelers pass through. A family of greedy rural farmers is determined to make its fortune and has devised a diabolical stratagem to achieve this goal: Invest in an inn so they can rob traveling guests, allowing them to get rich without arousing the suspicions of the police! Whether or not their plan will work out, one thing is certain: Not every guest will leave this inn alive….

In The Bloody Inn, you are one of the competitive innkeepers, bent on amassing the most wealth. Unfortunately, your morals hinder you from robbing your guests… at least while they're alive. Fortunately, your scruples have no qualms with murder. Of course, you can't just have dead bodies piled everywhere: It's bad for business, and besides, what if the police drop by for a visit? It's all so much work! Perhaps you could employ some of the guests as accomplices? Everyone has a price, after all!

A year on A game with a great concept, IMHO let down by sub-par mechanisms. I liked the idea, and the art but I didn't find the actual game play as fun as I had hoped.

Game in my collection it is likely to replace Star Realms?
Outcome Backed

My Thoughts: I backed this game purely because I am a research chemist, and there aren't that many games with a chemistry theme that I really like. This is a nice tweak on the deck building mechanism, and it had cool industrial buildings in it. Looking forward to playing it.

The Hype: Xenon is a valuable noble gas that is found in very trace amounts in Earth’s atmosphere. Due to the difficulty and expense of isolating high-purity Xenon for various technological advancements in recent years, the need for Cryogenic Distillation of Xenon is on the rise.

Xenon Profiteer is a highly thematic, deck-deconstruction, euro game for 2-4 entrepreneurs, where each player takes control of their own Air Separation Facility and distills Xenon from their Systems to complete lucrative contracts. You will also physically expand your facility by building upgrades, pipelines, and acquiring new contracts and connecting them to your Center Console.

In a decidedly different take on the classic deck-building format, Xenon Profiteer not only actively encourages players to remove cards from their decks, it is absolutely essential in order to isolate Xenon. Each turn begins by strategically removing cards from your hand (and deck) through Distilling based on the real-world hierarchy of elements. The goal: only have Xenon remaining in your hand. The problem is, of course, the only way to gain more Xenon, is to bring in more AIR. And AIR is composed of all kinds of other pesky elements that make isolating Xenon difficult.

To combat this, you will need to Buy powerful upgrade cards for your facility in order to become more efficient. These upgrade cards can either be purchased for a lower cost and placed into your system (deck) or installed directly to your facility to be used every turn for the remainder of the game. Or maybe, if you are low on funds, you might decide to place a Bid Token onto an important Upgrade or Contract, thereby giving yourself a discount on a future turn and causing other players to pay YOU extra if they decide to purchase it instead.

After a player has either completed 5 contracts or installed 5 upgrades, the game end is triggered and the player with the most Xenon points is the winner.

Do you have the ingenuity, strategy, and tactical fortitude it takes to be recognized by several reputable business publications as the owner of the most influential domestic supplier of Xenon?

A year on Sold without playing. Its not that this is a bad game, but people would rather play Trains.

Game in my collection it is likely to replace The Resistance.
Outcome Kickstarted for home delivery.

My Thoughts Bought to replace both Coup and The Resistance. Ted is the Werewolf king, so hopefully this will supersede those that have gone before.

My favourite hidden role game was actually Woooolf (by a Korean game company I think), but I haven't got a copy.

The Hype One Night Revolution (formerly One Night Resistance) is a super fast game of secret identities for 3 to 10 players that combines all the deductive and chaotically fun elements of the One Night Ultimate Werewolf series with more structured game play. The result is a very addictive game that is easy to learn and will be played over and over again.

Every player starts with a specialist role and an ID (either Government Informant or Rebel Fighter). At night the Informants reveal themselves to one another — assuming any exist, that is, as at all player counts between zero and three Informants are in play — then all players complete their specialist action in a clockwise order (removing the need for a rigid script/app and reducing the potential to accidentally reveal your role). Specialist actions include gathering information, switching roles, and helping players in their attempt to identify the Informant(s) before the day is over. If a majority of players identify an Informant, the Rebels wins — but if the Informant(s) remain hidden, they win!

A year on This game got some pants reviews, so I sold it on while it was still hot.

Other games of interest for testing:

TIME Stories - Choose your own adventure game. Looks beautiful, but limited replayability and a high price tag. Update I did pick this up in the end, but I was disappointed with the actual gameplay. Sold.
Pandemic Legacy - Cate and Sarah to buy. Update Played this with Sarah and Cate and Loved it.
504 The latest from that crazy green haired man. It will either be a huge success or a train smash, and I have no idea which. I am not totally sold, but would try it out if offered.
My Village - Dave and Lou xmas list (but no actual info, other than the game will be dice based, but a similar weight to the original Village.) I have to admit to being lukewarm to the original Village game, and the multiplayer solitaire nature of this sequel does not endear me to investigate this more deeply. Although if I got offered a game, I would play. Update I did pick this up after a game with Dave and Lou, but I think Grand Austria Hotel will get more plays. Ultimately sold as I preferred GAH, and now also have Lorenzo.
Inhabit the Earth - Its a Richard Breese game so its going to have great mechanics. I probably don't need another Evolution related gamed as well as Evolution, but I would happily try it out. Dave and Lou try before buy list.
Barony New game from the designer of Splendor. Definitely worth a look. The art and pieces are beautiful, but the gameplay seems a little blah. Update Did pick this up, played a couple of times, but it just didn't grab me.
Dice City - Dave and Lou have pre-ordered. I think this game looks like a more enjoyable Machi Koro. Definitely want to try this out.
Favor of the Pharaoh - Dave and Lou to pre-order. Reimplementation of To Court the King. A clever Yahtzee / dice manipulation game. Maybe a super-filler. Looks like fun, and one to test out.
Shakespeare - Dave and Lou xmas list. Good looking game. Reminiscent of Rokoko with people cards to use, action points to spend, a mini reverse auction and so forth. From the Rahdo demo it looks like a nicely put together worker placement game, but probably not exciting enough to break into my collection.
Minerva - Lou has pre-ordered. A roman themed tile-laying, city building game by the excellent Hiyashi Hisashi (of Trains and Sail to India fame). An interesting alternative to Suburbia. When you place a residence is activates all the buildings in one direction away from the residence. It looks very clever.
Bomb Squad - Sarah and Cate are interested in this against the clock co-op game about diffusing a bomb.
Mistfall - Dave and Lou xmas list. I think I am unlikely to pick this up with Pathfinder ACG coming out on iPad, but again, I am happy to try it out.
The Grand Austria hotel - Dave and Lou try and buy list - A Lookout game with half the team from Tzolkin has got to be worth a look. Update Picked up, and like this game very much.
Food chain magnate Splotter make some interesting games, but I think the difficulty is too high a barrier for my game groups. Love the art though! Would like to see this in action, but probably unlikely to buy due to a lack of an audience.
Poseidons Kingdom Older Fragor game that got a reprint via Game Salute and Kickstarter. Pieces are super cute, and the wave mechanism is cool. Might try and encourage Cate and Sarah to pick this up.

Game in my collection it is likely to replace Addition to base game.
Outcome Very likely to buy.

My Thoughts RoFtG was one of my top 2014 (or was it early 2015) releases. It took everything I liked about San Juan (and the few things I liked about RftG), and made a punchy game with great decisions, not too many rules and great presentation. Definitely ripe for expansions, so it will be interesting to see what they do with it. MOAR DICE! Well definitely some more planets anyway. It has been initially unveiled at 2015 Gathering of Friends. Adds a bit more complexity, and more decisions. For me, thats a good thing.

The hype Roll for the Galaxy: Ambition includes new factions, new dice, new tiles, and more for Roll for the Galaxy. The game is rumoured to contain (according to Tom Vasal):
Leader Dice (black): One for each player, replaces one Home (white) die in the starting cup. There are only 5 in the expansion, you will never get more. The faces of this dice are: Explore/Produce, Explore/Ship, Explore/$, Develop/$, Settle/$, Wild acts as purple (color wild). $ means that the leader die goes back to the cup after being used
Dual-Phase jumps to the other Phase if the first one was not selected, but the second is.
Second new die type - not revealed yet
Objectives - something like the goals in Race but with a different twist.
'a ton of' new starting Factions and starting Worlds, a few new tiles for the bag.

A year on Sold alongside the base game to a friend in the club that wanted to play it more than I. Then had sellers remorse and re-bought.

Game in my collection it is likely to replace None
Outcome Pre ordered

My Thoughts Just bought and love the base game. Unsurprisingly, I'll be getting the expansion. Its pushed Glory to Rome out of the top spot for 'multi-use' card games, just due to the sheer replayability.

The Hype Imperial Settlers: Atlanteans, an expansion that requires the base game to play, adds the option for playing Imperial Settlers with up to five players. The expansion includes a new faction board, the Atlanteans faction deck, technology tokens, and expansion cards for the original factions that complement the Atlanteans abilities.

The Atlanteans bring a new resource to the world of Imperial Settlers with technology that can unlock special abilities on faction cards and transform common buildings into powerful allies. The Atlanteans must use their abilities to find unique ways to score because their faction buildings sink at the end of the game and do not score points! While the other factions do not have the knowledge to use the technology of the Atlanteans, some buildings for each faction allow them to use some of that technology to their advantage.

A year on Sold because the expansions were just adding too much complexity to the base game, and it was a rules headache.

Outcome Pre-Ordered for Essen Collection.

My Thoughts Bought the base game. Interested to see what this expansion will bring. Although now that CoMKL is being released on iOS, I might wait for it to come out on there instead. Will certainly get the iOS release if its good (noting the continued issues some users have had with the Suburbia iOS release).

The hype What secrets are lurking in the shadows of King Ludwig's castle? Dozens of hidden swans are scattered throughout thirty new rooms in Castles of Mad King Ludwig: Secrets. Ludwig is particularly fond of these swans, which provide both much-needed cash at any time or can be collected for big bonuses at the end of the game. Surrounding and protecting your castle are new moats, making every room inside it even more valuable. The King has come up with more favors, including one for creating courtyards. Finally, secret passages enhance connections and muffle sound from activity rooms.

Castles of Mad King Ludwig: Secrets is an expansion for Castles of Mad King Ludwig that will help you build even more amazing, crazy castles than ever before!

A year on Really did not like the addition of the complexity of the little corridors and swans, but did like the extra rooms. This killed the game for me. I sold it and purchased on iOS instead.

Game in my collection it is likely to replace Addition to base game.
Outcome Kickstarted for Essen collection.

Note to self: Further expansion: Climate to be released at Gencon 2016 (with Kickstarter in Jan 2016), which includes a climate status track, allows creatures to have four traits (and minimum of two creature races). New climate-balacing traits like wooly coats and cooling fins.

My Thoughts Evolution was one of my favourite games of Essen 2014. I have played it with most of my friends, and it seems to hit a real sweet spot between approachability and depth, and an appealing theme. I've tried a number of strategies (eat as much as possible, eat everyone else), and its never the same path to winning. I am interested to see what Dom will bring to the expansion. I am especially in favour of expansions that don't add too many extra rules.

I have backed the Kickstarter for the expansion, and I am really excited that I will receive the second edition base game cards as a stretch goal. I feel like this rewards the people who supported the first edition. The KS is EU friendly, which I also appreciate.

The hype Flight is an expansion for the Evolution that introduces avian species into the ecosystem. Now your species can swoop on unsuspecting prey from above, fly away from predators, or soar to a new location when food is scarce. Will the ability to fly propel you to new heights? Or will it bring your downfall? Explore the expanding Evolution world and find out!

With this expansion, you may now choose between creating a normal species and creating a flying species. Flying species have special costs and advantages:

Costs

1. You must discard 2 cards instead of 1 to create a flying species.

2. Flying species have a maximum body size of 3 instead of 6.

3. Flying species have an upkeep cost of food equal to their Body Size. The upkeep cost simulates the amount of food needed to maintain wings.

Advantages

1. Some of the new expansion traits, like Dive-Bomb and Brood Parasite, only work for flying creatures.
2. A species with Flight may take food from the Cliff, giving it an extra source of food.

3. A species with Flight cannot be attacked unless the attacking Carnivore also has the Flight trait.

4. If a species with Flight also has the Carnivore trait, you may discard from your hand to negate Symbiosis, Warning Call, or Climbing for when it attacks.

The expansion changes tactics and strategy dramatically, but it doesn't change the base game's core mechanics, so it's a snap to learn.

A year on Sold with the base game to a friend who loved this game even more than I. Then re-bought with Climate instead.

Game in my collection it is likely to replace Expansion
Outcome Bought

My Thoughts In some ways a slightly unneccessary expansion, but if it perks up the game, and gets more plays for it, then so much the better.

The Hype Five Tribes: The Artisans of Naqala, the first expansion for Five Tribes, introduces a new tribe to the game, and players will want to use these artisans to help them in their quest to claim the Sultanate.

The artisans, represented in the game by purple meeples, allow players to craft precious goods or magic items, with some of these items being worth victory points (VPs) and others unlocking special powers for their owner.

To make use of these artisans, you'll need to visit the new tiles included in this expansion: workshops (where the artisans craft their items) and specialized markets (where players can purchase specific merchandise that they need). An additional tile in the game features an impassable chasm, and this tile — as well as the included mountain markers — forces players to adapt to new landscapes when moving meeples on the board.

Five Tribes: The Artisans of Naqala also includes two new Djinns.

A year on Sold the expansion as I didn't like the added complexity, but retained the base game.

My Thoughts More maps for Trains? Yes please. There are two problems with this map pack: firstly the missing location cards for playing it in 'ticket to ride' mode, and secondly, that the board is printed the wrong side round, i.e. the board was supposed to be foldable so that you could use it half sized in a two player game. AEG are not offering replacements, and there are no plans for a reprint. Its just a bit of a bummer rather than the end of the world.

Missing cards: http://www.alderac.com/trains/

The Hype Trains: Map Pack 2 introduces an exciting, new, double-sided game board featuring a four-player map of Europe on one side and a pair of two-player boards on the other, including Italy and California.

A year on Still got, alongside Trains: Rising Sun
