Previous Session Reports

And so it came to pass that on the twenty-fourth day of the fourth month of the fifteenth year of the third millenia of the Common Era, fifteen gamers did find their way unto the Official CBBS Gaming Basement, and attended a Game Night, and found that it was good. And their names were Tim, Nyck, Andy, Jerry, Eric Five, Leif, Rachel, Tycho, Tom, Shawn, Ian, Scott the Counterclockwiseth, Lynette, Kory, and Eryn. And the Lord looked down and saw their savage exhuberance, and thus did smite them for their hubris and their lack of multiple Erics, turning their five-calorie beverages foul and their urine blue, and allowing Andy to achieve victory multiple times.

And the gamers did rend their garments and put dirt on their heads, and were sad.

Because the earth continued to rotate around the sun, we began with a rollicking and sordid game of Ricochet Robots. We actually seemed to have trouble finding solutions this time around, but we have no evidence of that based on the simplicity of the puzzles we chose to photograph this time around:

Anyhoo, Nyck, Tim, Andy, Jerry, Eric Fünf, Leif, Rachel, and Tycho all earned a chip. None of the rest of you losers did, because you are all lame.

Seriously, Xia: Legends of a Drift System sounds like one of those non-games that Ian always brings, but apparently Ian wasn't invited to join Leif, Tom, Eric 5, and Tycho to play in the lounge.

It is noted that they played to five points, a total that Leif exceeded (6) despite dying on turn one, because the red ship went really fast. Tycho scored five, Eric earned 3, and Tom was doomed by slow engines and finished with one.

Somebody somewhere said something about playing Trajan on this Game Night, and thus it was so. Jerry, Tim, Shawn, and Ian built Rome in about one-eighth of a day.

Tim's initial bonus tile was one of those nine-pointers if you end the game with a given resource (Flames, in this case), which are pretty awful and generally a crapshoot, but at least if you get it early you can plan to accumulate a bunch of them during the game and maybe a Trajan tile to help out. Unfortunately for Tim, there were very few Flames available until the final round - when the People demanded two of them. Despite having a tripled Trajan-tile round and basically focusing on grabbing them all game long, a Permanent Flame Trajan tile was never available when Tim was ready for grabbing - so the doubled Flame demand on the final round was fatal, and Tim lost those incredibly important nine points.

However, Tim's stockpile of Trajan tiles had netted him a lot of in-game points, plus that gave him the resources to score well in the Provinces. Shawn, however, did a much better job of managing his Mancala wheel, getting at least three tripled actions and managing to blitz the Senate in the final round to score a ton of points and get a valuable bonus tile. Tim and Jerry had balked each other in their Senate rounds, and Tim was quite unlucky with card draws, basically never getting any kind of match and not even finding goods that scored with his bonus tiles. Still, he got a couple eight pointers down, and his lead in nine-point Trajan tiles kept him in contention.

But after the final scoring, Shawn's superior cube management prevailed, giving him 121 points. Jerry's Construction points and a 20 point bonus got him to 115, while Tim's zeroed Flame bonus dropped him to 113. Ian had shipped two big four-of-a-kinds during the game, but lost out on the end-of-round demands and finished with 102.

O'er on Table Three, Andy, Nyck, Counterclockwise Scott, Rachel, and Lynette broke out the venerable Taj Mahal. For playing. By them.

Andy somehow scored 61 points! Lynette got 49. Nyck gained 46. Counterclockwise Scott earned 35. Rachel found 34.

There would be many hours until Table One was ready, so Andy, Tom, Tycho, Nyck, and Eric Cinco played Pickomino.

Worms were eaten! Tiles were taken, lost, and stolen. They laughed, they cried, and, in the end, they all learned absolutely nothing about themselves. Also, Eric had six worms, Tom had 5, and Nyck got either 2 or ə. Tycho and Andy were wormless.

It was, at long last, time for a reconfig. Or something close. Anyway, Andy, Jerry, Shawn, and Tim met at Table One to play Endeavor, because Tim had spotted it on his shelf and remembered that he liked it.

In this game Tim decided to be evil and grab that first Slavery card. As a European Colonial power, that's thematic, but it still makes me feel icky. Still, sometimes you gotta play evil just to see the point.

I am happy to report that, in this game at least, evilness did not pay. Part of the problem was that Tim went last, and everybody else took a Shipping building, so either Tim was going to follow along or he was going to have to try something else - and Tim never just follows along with the crowd in that situation, no matter how appealing it may be. Rather than grab a Workhouse and go for big buildings, he decided to take the, um, other building, the level 1 building with a crate that lets you grab cards. So while everybody else was shipping out to the Colonies and getting resource chips that way, Tim decided to grab a card - and the regular Eurpoean level 0 card didn't get him to a breakpoint, so that's when he decided to be evil and go in for slavery.

The idea is that on turn two Tim would be the only one to get a level 2 building, which would give him a big advantage. But, as it turned out, the level two buildings aren't that great - it's the level 3s that start giving you double actions (e.g. ship AND colonize) that really give you an advantage. And the other players, especially Andy, were able to grab up the Brick chips from the Colonies and Europe, so suddenly Tim found himself unable to get any more bricks - the only ones available were on multi-regional connection routes, and Tim's lack of colonizing really limited his access to those. To make matters worse, one of the colonies soon opened, but Tim had been unable to ship there, and the colony he had finally targeted (with some brick cards) was, for some reason, treated as if it were full of lepers by everybody else.

Eventually, once that Colony (I want to say India?) came in, Tim started coming back - he soon had the most card capacity of anyone, and could fill up his board and finally make some progress. But it took too long to chew through the lousy low level cards to get the good ones underneath.

Meanwhile, Andy had somehow managed to both dominate the colonies AND grab the most cities in Europe. He actually got to the level three buildings on Turn 3, and thus was able to leverage those double actions into massive influence throughout the board. Shawn was good at poaching Governorships and had influence everywhere, and Jerry was having better progress than Tim at working his pet colonies in, plus he soon joined Andy in building level 3 and level 4 buildings, with all the benefits they enjoyed.

The final turn was actually a really good one for Tim, as he had worked his Cards and Gold almost to the max, so he had a ton of disks to place - that let him swap a bunch of his low level cards for the upper level ones, and in resources where each additional one was a full point. But Andy's strategy was just too strong - run to the level threes, then take advantage of those extra actions to build your board evenly and keep yourself in position to nab key cards and Governors.

So Andy won, 70 to Jerry's 61, Tim's 59, and Shawn's 58. Shawn also did not get far on the brick track, which just goes to show how important those bricks really are - I think the distribution of initial brick chips was wonky, too, and if we were more experienced we might have realized how important those early bricks would be, because there really wasn't a good way to get any more until the late game.

Tim also learned that, in Endeavor at least, grabbing an early card really isn't that big an advantage - Tim's early Slavery card only opened better Slavery cards up for Andy and Jerry, and that's true at the Colonies, as well. You don't have a great deal of control over the timing of things, so you may have to take a suboptimal card or set up the next guy to be Governor - that's just the nature of this game. But it's not really worth it to go out of your way to get a card early, as it just lets somebody else get a much better benefit for much less work.

Tycho probably got the Sheriff's briefcase, because he scored $2250 - and all he had to do was run on top of a train and get punched and shot at for a bit. Easy money.

Ian wound up with $1450, while Nyck scored $1250, Tom and Eric got a grand each, and Kory finished up with $800.

With eight people left, we had no choice but to begin the Late Nite phase of Game Night by playing Shadow Hunters. Eryn, Ian, Jerry, Nyck, Kory, Tycho, Tim, and Lynette were the pants wearers.

Early on, Eryn made the mistake of admiring herself in a Mirror, which revealed to the rest of the world that she was, in fact, a Werewolf. That drew enough focus from both her teammates and adversaries that everybody forgot to wonder why Tim was, rather clunkily, not attacking anybody. The reason, of course, was that he was playing David, who wants three of four specific White Card Items to win - thus, Tim spent most of the game jogging back and forth between the Church and the Underworld Gate, drawing as many white cards as possible, and trying to keep the game going long enough to get through most of the deck.

Meanwhile, the Hunters were trying to figure out what to do with Eryn - the usual thing is to focus on Weird Woods and special cards, but that just leaves a big bad wolf alive longer to wreak havoc.

At this point Ian had a shot at sneaking out a win as Bryan, as he could see that Tycho was sitting on 11 HP - so he attacked and hoped he could kill Tycho and that he had 13 or more HP, which would have fulfilled Bryan's victory condition. Sadly, Tycho was Fu-Ka, who died pointlessly after taking junk 12 points of damage.

By this point, three of the four key items for David (Tim) were now out, so Tim had to figure out how to get them. He accomplished this by stealing the Dagger of Whatever that allows him to take all of an opponents items when he kills him - and then used it to kill Jerry (Valkyrie), who was hording two of the items Tim needed. It was a risk, as there were only four people left and if Tim had killed the final Hunter (Kory, as Emi) the game would have ended. But Lynette (Unknown) and Kory were unable to slay each other before Tim had another turn - which he used to move to the Church, draw the Spear of Longinus, and claim victory.

It is possible that this is the first time David has ever won Shadow Hunters; it's certainly the first time Tim has won with him, because usually the game is over before half the white cards are drawn.

There was, of course, nothing left to do but play Jungle Speed.

The typical hilarity ensued, as Lynette and Eryn hadn't played before (or much), so misgrabs and misreads were plenty, and countergrabbing and antecountergrabbing were the order of the day.

Tim won! Then Jerry won twice. Or the other way around. Or shuffled together. Kory, Tycho, Lynette, Eryn, Ian, and Nyck failed to win, all at once.

We were not done yelling at each other, so we were forced by circumstances to play Pit.

We mention this every time, but the best part of this game is the acrimony when you are looking for that final Corn and some idiot just won't trade it. Good times!

Anyway, Jerry won twice, both times with Coffee. The International Coffee Exchange Commission will be investigating. Nyck also cornered Coffee, so there's a good chance that at least one of these games was won by hiding a "Corn" amongst the Coffee, perhaps unintentionally. But 1 am is far too late for any of the rest of us to pay enough attention to catch flagrant cheating like that, so we cannot prove that it did not happen.

Lynette cornered Oats, and Tim gained a monopoly on Soybeans. Hooray!
