Welcome to the May 2015 Solitaire Games on Your Table:
The Friendliest Place on the Internet

The "Rules" of SGOYT:

For those who are just joining us:

1. Play a game solo (absolutely anything you like, any way you like).
2. Come here and post something about it (as much or as little as you like).
3. Have fun (playing games and talking about them here).
4. Keep it friendly/non-sexist/non-trolly etc. please.

A recent trend (which is by no means mandatory) is to include one thumbsup and two thumbsdown describing pros and cons of the game you have played. This helps to temper our optimism and keep our wallets safe!

Speaking of wallets:

CAUTION: This Geeklist has proven hazardous to wallets! Please keep a close eye on your wallet at all times! The host and members of SGOYT take no responsibility for the safety of your wallet and/or its contents!

May is storytelling month on SGOYT

One of my favourite things about gaming is the ability of games to generate a compelling and exciting story as we play. I find this happens even more in solo play than when playing with others. This month I will be distributing all of the GG that is tipped to the list to those who post a "narrative" of their gameplay. It doesn't have to be long, and it doesn't have to be fancy. Just tell us about your session as if you were telling us a story.

Ryanmobile posted a great story in January, check it out!

And speaking of Ryan he is one of the users nominated for the 1-Player Guild hall of fame. Please head over to the final voting for the 1-Player Guild Awards, open until May 15th and vote for your favourite games, designers and users.

And finally, here are some useful links for solo gamers everywhere:

The 1-Player Guild - The beating heart of the solo gamer community - now the 3rd largest guild on BGG (as of May 3, 2015)!

The SGOYT Subscription Thread - Now that you've found us, make sure you never miss another month.

The 2015 SGOYT Challenges Subscription - The members of this community love to challenge each other with unique solo play variants, or plain old high score challenges. Sign up here and start playing solo against others!

The 2014 People's Choice Top 100 Solitaire Games - Check out the results of Kevin's poll of the top 100 solo games.
Caution: Not wallet friendly!

The Solo Games Chain of Generosity - Get a game, give a game, check it out!

The 1-Player Guild Trading Post - Got some solo games you'd like to trade? This is the place.

Solitaire Recommendations for Your Table - Exactly what it sounds like.
Caution: Not wallet friendly!

SGOYT Spreadsheet - Are you a numbers nerd? This spreadsheet contains information on the all the games and users posted to SGOYT.

The 1-Player Guild/SGOYT Solitaire Goals List - Have you set yourself a challenge for 2015? Decided to do a 10x10 challenge, stop buying new games, buy 1000 games, play all your old games, play nothing but new games? This is the list to post your goals for the year, get support (and maybe some light mockery) from other users, and track your progress.

SGOYT Made Me Buy This - When Jason finally convinces you to buy Hoplomachus, or any other post results in you rushing to the FLGS to pick up a new game, share your shame with the rest of us here.
Caution: Not wallet friendly!

Solo Boarding - SGOYT regular Ava has a youtube channel all about solo gaming called "Solo Boarding" - Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC57wDk3XhliWZiymimANkOA

Future SGoYT hosts are:

June 2015 - koinskyz

August 2015 - Iz Nibz

Ugh... whole entry typed up. Finicky fingers got overzealous clicking around tabs and I inadvertently hit 'back'.

For shame. Yes, I know there is some browser mod that keeps that from being a problem and no, I haven't downloaded it. Every couple months when this happens to me I kick myself for that.

This game is great. I don't know what I'm going to do when I have this, Don't Tread On Me: The American Revolution Solitaire Board Game, and Liberty or Death: The American Insurrection on my shelf. I don't need all three, right?

...

Right?

A late happy Memorial Day to all, especially those to whom this day is dedicated!

Whoa... let's try that again. Bad things happen when I post late at night. I definitely meant to dedicate learning/playing this game to the occasion as an acknowledgement of the fallen and all those directly affected by their sacrifice. I also realize that "happy" is not exactly the best adjective for the day. Sorry for any readers who may have been put off by that mess of words.
---
I'll just cross post from the blog: Learning Across 5 Aprils Part 1

Short version: This was a really great experience. The Union won the first Battle of Bull Run.

thumbsup Easy rules.
thumbsup Great presentation. Simple chits and an attractive map.
thumbsdown None yet.

Tried one more round again at lunchtime. Took my time and really paid attention to which cards were out and which were coming. Sadly I forgot that some of the cards I was waiting for were actually personalities, so they wouldn't help even when they arrived.

I did certainly play smarter and better, though and ended with a 62. The Lunatic was the remaining Personality in the Capital. How apropos.

Lets call this one "Have Decktet, will travel"

My family and I drove 9 hours on Friday, had a thing with my wife's family and drove back today (Sunday). A lot of driving in a short amount of time.

On Fri night, I was responsible for getting my 5 yr old son to sleep in the hotel room. He did, rather quickly, but I was stuck in the room (luckily with a beer from my brother in law). Wait! I brought my Decktet! Along in my new custom bag from ArtsCow!

My actual game of Adaman went fine, until I got rid of the all but one Snakes in my tableau. Of course, two cards later I figured out a way to win -- but only if I could get the last Snake off my middle row. That was the only thing I could have done, so I lost.

That said, this game of Adaman was my 10th, so now I have 3 games done in my 10/10 for this year.

A bumper outing for this tiny, tight, adventure game; played four games, this morning, as it'd been a while since it climbed off the shelf.

Part of the reason for the extended session is that I just did so badly in the first couple of games. For each, I kept the ranger character, who should be able to scoot out of trouble (or, at least, combat with shadows) as a result of his "bullseye" ability... but I was just drawing cards as poorly as I roll dice.

Died at the hands of Baqem twice, as I gambled on his whimsical generosity, and then just seemed to find low cards draws, or all of one skill-set, time and again in the other games.

Have since abandoned any desire to be an adventurer. I'm going to be a fisherman. That's got to be easier... right?

It has been far too long since I have last played this gem. Must have been close to 10 years now since my last game. Usually I am not that much of a train theme fan and auctions for play order are not my thing either. But AoS has always hit a sweet spot with me as simply THE BEST train game for me out there.

Lack of playing partners had this sitting in the shelve and I finally managed last year to trade for some of Ted Alspach's solitaire maps.

Took out Puerto Rico today to get back into the game. And what a blast! The game still hits my sweet spot. Great!

With no competition, there is no auction for play order and Engineer (build 4 tracks instead of 3) and Locomotive (upgrade engines by 1 link) are available to take but cost $5 to do so. During 10 rounds you try to get as many points, delivering live stock (red cubes) and weapons (black cubes) to San Juan. Only live stock earn you income, though. Points are tallied as usual at the end with any black cube left on the board reducing your income by 10(!).

Played the easiest mode with 5 black cubes vs. 17 red ones and had some easy pickings for deliveries in the early rounds. Still ended up with 8 shares issued. Endscore was 60 points which I assume to be far under par. cool But it was the usual brain burning of "do I need to issue another share", "upgrade engine for $5 or while forfeiting a delivery", "to build or not to build through mountains", "does my income exceed my costs or will I go broke"... ?

As there is no randomness except for the cube distribution, I am looking forward to exploring this solitaire "puzzle" further.

Thought I'd pull out AA and give it a shot. Super early 1st Prop was both a blessing and a curse. I managed to get a lot of good Capabilities out, but it wasn't enough to stop both Cartels from getting 2 Shipments out at the end and AUC's Elite Backing to bring him to a +0 Margin.

Cartels - +1
AUC - +0
Gov't - -2
FARC - -9

Welcome to the jungle I've got solo games...
I can do anything I want cause I know the players by name
Noo meeples I can find, it's cubes that I need
If I can't manage all the bots, then I might need to concede

I setup the game last night and got through about 8 cards before the FARC took a major lead. The government was working to eliminate the FARC and expand it's control towards the western side of the map. As fate would have it, I pulled a card that allowed me to transport 3 police anywhere on the map - so thinking more long term I opted to place them on the east side of the map in the middle of the fray between the FARC and the Drug Traffickers. I transported some troops to the jungle to remove one of the bases using an assaults so I could place my own; hoping that the gamble would set me up for further assaults in the region. That would be a big mistake because I lacked the control on my pipelines, and the FARC places pieces on the pipeline setting up for a major sabotage.

Meanwhile the AUC was slowly taking control of the mid mountain sections and starting to get some bases on the map.

Update
The FARC continued to expand and march into my LoCs, sabotaging them and pressuring towards the east. AUC was slowly growing in force but I was letting them go to help keep the FARC in check. The cartels were gaining in force and terrorizing in cities and in some other departments, dragging down my support. The government continued to have issues because aid was not coming, and resources were not available for large scale operations. When the first propaganda came up it was about 30 cards in - the Cartels were closest to winning at 11 bases, but no resource. After the propaganda, cartels were at 39 resources, and AUC had all but 1 base placed on the map, putting them in second place.

I had a feeling that another propaganda round was coming soon because of how long it took to get to the first one. I decided to focus on the cartels in order to bring their bases down immediately in hopes that the propaganda would wait, but 3 cards in the next propaganda came up and there was nothing I could do about the AUC, who took the win.

This is probably my favorite COIN game because the tenseness ratchets up quickly, yet allows for some early game mistakes - more so than Cuba Libre. ADP was too frustrating to play for me (although I liked the joint resource mechanics), and Fire in the Lake was great, but I don't have enough plays to compare)

I'm not very good at this, but here it goes.....

“Marilyn” 7Y3T9D is a bioroid. She’s the driver. She stays in the car. That’s her job. But not tonight. Mr. White wants Marilyn to infiltrate CyberSolutions Inc. He needs information. A lot of it.

They’re on the brink of putting Jinteki out of business with the next wave of synthetic humanoids, and they don’t like that.

Marilyn normally avoids violence. Harming humans isn’t her bag. That’s why Mr. White chose her for this mission. He wants it clean. He wants fast. And she better not fail.

Going in through the Locker Room, Marilyn quickly advances into the Brain Mapping Lab. There, she almost runs into Tyrone Kent. A nobody, really. He doesn’t even notice her before leaving for the night.

She downloads four files and enters the Environmental Testing Area. She checks the Live Feed, extracts a couple of files, and heads into the Executive Meeting Room. She finds out the Alarm is going off. Maybe Tyrone did see her.

Security is still a ways off, and she doesn’t have nearly enough data to satisfy Mr. White. She needs to make him happy. She’s worried about her “children.”

Using a Slider to get into the Infirmary, she grabs some more files that may be of interest. A lab worker is there. He shouldn’t be. It’s really late. But he’s got his headphones on and doesn’t even take notice of her, let alone the internal alarm.

Idiot.

She needs to find the big score. And she needs to start picking up the pace. Finding the Prototype Storage triggers another alarm. Not good. Instead of looking for something helpful, she quickly heads to the Chassis Assembly Line. Sweet! New prototypes are being worked on here.

But it’s also got heavy security measures. Two more Alarms trigger. More Security is on the way. And they’re moving quickly now. Marilyn needs data!

The Transformer Hub looks like it has some potential. But….jackpot!! The CEO’s Office. Almost at the end of the line too. There are definitely things here she’ll need. There’s one more door just down the hall though.

Using her trusty Qianju PT, she whips down there to find the Neural Imaging Lab. She picks up a Med Tech kit and a Utility Belt there. Maybe they’ll help on her way out.

Which needs to be now!

Back in the CEO’s office, she extracts four more data files…and something even more juicy. If Marilyn gets in deep trouble on her way out, it might come in very handy.

The Security force is now half way to CyberSolutions, moving very fast. Marilyn needs to run. She goes past the Transformer Hub and stops at the Chassis Assembly Line to steal one of the Prototypes off the line. She’s hoping this is what Mr. White is after.

Running again.

Security is closer. 38 minutes away.

Still running.

23 minutes.

Marilyn is going as quickly as she can.

18….12………only 6 minutes out!!

She’s not going to make it. So close too!!

Marilyn ducks back into the Brain Mapping Lab where her friend, Tyrone, was just a little while ago. Quickly she taps into the mainframe. She can hear the sirens now. They’ll be here any moment. Dialing into the CEO’s private line, she gets hold of him.

She’s got something for him…if he’ll help her out of the jam she’s in.

The sirens are loud now. They must be pulling into the CyberSolutions complex.

And then….silence.

The sirens are off. The alarms are shut down.

The CEO made the right choice, Marilyn thinks. She had to give up some of the data she extracted, but it was better than getting caught. And dissatisfying Mr. White.

Instead, she slips out the back door. The Security force is heading back from where they came. She’s got 25 zetabytes of data for Mr. White. And the Prototype.

He’s pleased.

Really enjoy this fun game as a solitaire story generator. Playing a single character makes the game a straight up push-your-luck experience, but I find it quite satisfying. The theme is awesome. Excellent FFG components...too bad they aren't supporting it any longer. Glad I have it, though.

Stayed home from church this morning with a sick little gamer. While he watched Mighty Machines on YouTube I broke out 2 little quick games.

This is a fun press-your-luck game where you are trying to get a group of people (the Ari) away from their recently destroyed city to their ancient home where they will be safe. There are mountains in the way and you usually have several choices on how to leave your current area, however forward often penalizes you and you end up with the Wolfhounds coming closer or losing food or something.

You win by making it to the upper right corner (the city of Res). You lose by running out of food, clans (each time the Wolfhounds catch you you lose 1 clan) or losing all of the people's spirit.

This is technically not a win, but I think I'm going to call it one So close!

Edit 5/5/15:
No need for a new picture after this play. Had an almost identical map turnout except I had 1 less clan and 1 more food and was still just 1 spot away from the goal!

Played a solo game of Arkham Horror with 3 characters vs Azatoth and won.
I recieved an elder sign on turn 1 with the character that can take 2 encounter cards in the other worlds and choose one (don't remember her name).

thumbsup This game is just beautiful to look at and a very thematic game. I always enjoy it.

thumbsdownAgain it took to long. 4 hours including set up and cleaning up. If this game would take 2 hours this would be my favourite game.

A magician, a scientist and a psychologist walk into Arkham...

And wonder what the big deal is.

HOLY CRAP. I WON IN 5 TURNS!

Never have the stars aligned in such a ridiculous way before. I was dealt a Elder Sign and on turn 1 the psychologist went shopping and bought another. I was also able to get enough clue tokens to seal a third gate on turn 2 by an event that gave me 4 clue tokens. I had Ithaqua as the goo and was playing the Curse of the Pharaoh expansion which has a lot of terrible weather cards...which Ithaqua ignores. 3 gates out in 3 turns. 3rd turn also had the scientist using an elder sign on her gate. 4th turn had psychologist using Elder sign on HER gate and the Mythos deck drew a the just sealed gate. Then the two ladies spent a turn healing while the magician romped through R'leyh (only losing a Spell in the process). Next Mythos card was a monster surge out of the one and only gate! Next turn the magician pops out and closes that gate with his 3 lore dice.

3 trophys. No gate. Game over.

Bewm.

Hi, folks.

I set up Arkham Horror with Dunwich and The King in Yellow. Three investigators (Mandy Smith, Monterrey Jack and Diana Stanley) against Shub-Niggurath.
Long story short, only two sealed Locations, very little clues (Gates kept opening on Locations that had two). I got near a closed Gates victory (a couple of turns away), but in the end the GOO awoke, and made mince pies with my Investigators.
I left the game set up. Tomorrow, another go at the GOO! (I'm so sorry for that... yuk)

Using: Storm of Souls (Simple Solo)

Seem to have falen behind on the 10x10, so going through a catch-up surge at the moment.
Pulled this one out as it's quick - and the above variant is ultra simple, allowing for several plays in one session.

Won 4 of 10. Due to the simple play where AI takes the rightmost 2 cards from the centre row; if high cards come out early then the AI gets an early boost. Later in the game decisions are balancing taking good cards from the right and bettering the AI cards, or taking a weaker card to minimise the AI draw for that round.

thumbsup Apprentice Edition was meant as an intro to Ascension-dom, so cheap...
...though hard to find in UK now. Though Star Realms is still commonly stocked - and the better deck-builder in-a-box for Solo or 1v1 IMO.
thumbsdown Storm of Souls is a weak, luckfest, tacked on solo - for this deck at least.
thumbsdown Artwork. Often there is not a significant contrast between the foreground character and the background.

I got this in a recent math trade. I had played the digital version before a couple years ago on a friend's iPad, but because my only device is a Kindle Fire, I haven't been able to play it since.

I used the regular solitaire rules in which the Nemesis gets the rightmost two cards every turn. I was a bit unlucky in that it got a couple high value cards the first turn, when I couldn't do anything about it. Once I was able to start buying cards with banishing abilities, I tried to manipulate the center row to decrease the points it could obtain, but in the end it wasn't quite enough. Nemesis beat me 54-48.

It does play somewhat similar to Star Realms, which I also own. (I guess I should reverse that and say Star Realms plays similar to Ascension...) What I like about Ascension in comparison is that I don't have to worry about the AI attacking bases first (which I'm always forgetting in Star Realms), and I don't have to fiddle with hit points that are constantly fluctuating up and down, so it's easier to manage. The down side is that the AI doesn't have any personality, the way the Nemesis Beast and Pirates in Star Realms do.

thumbsup Quick-playing game with interesting tactical decisions and simple upkeep for the AI.

thumbsdown The included board, which isn't really necessary to the game, makes the box bigger than it needs to be.

thumbsdown Not much in the way of overarching strategy, other than "don't let Nemesis get points."

So, I pulled the trigger (so to speak) on this one. During the late 80's and 90's I pretty much ate, slept and breathed GW and the Assassins were always my favourite pick when playing 40K, so when my FLGS offered a 15% discount on RRP for pre-orders and I had some stuff to trade for store credit I thought 'Why not?'

The box has a satisfying weight to it, mostly due to the 4 large playing boards which seem to be the same thickness and finish as the recent Space Hulk releases, just not embossed. The minis are exactly what you would expect from GW, lots of detail and neat little flourishes, yet are easy to assemble. My only gripe is with the Chaos Space Marines which look a little basic compared to the other models in the game; if these are supposed to be an elite Company then I would expect them to be sporting honour badges, scrolls and lots of character, but as it stands these guys look like they're on their first assignment.

The rulebook is glossy, easy to follow and contains a few pages of fluff at the end for anyone not familiar with the Offico Assassinorum, but does appear to have at least one discrepancy regarding line of sight (LOS), with the example given later in the book seemingly ignoring the LOS rules from earlier. For my game I decided to ignore the example and play 'rules as written' as this seemed to weigh things in favour of the system (I have a rule that I carry over from Space Hulk: Death Angel - If a rule can be interpreted in one of two ways and one way benefits you more, it's going to be the other interpretation. It seems to work). Yet even with this I pretty quickly breezed through the Astropathic Sanctum, snapping Cultist's necks and stuffing their bodies into the air vents, before teleporting to the Temple of Shades and delivered the Emperor's message to Lord Severin Drask with plenty of time and tactics to spare.

The final fight was just a case of line up my Assassins and let fly with everything they had, and as a result felt a bit disappointing. I've come to realise that for solo gaming I much prefer a puzzle I can unpick, and while the stealthy infiltration at the start had a bit of this, once we moved to the Temple the board was so cramped that it felt that the only viable option was kick in the door and open fire.

But I'm not ready to give up on this just yet; at the back of the rulebook is a list of achievements, one of which is to win the game using just a single Assassin which sounds like it could be a real challenge. Beyond that, I have a few mates who will just lap this up and really get into the theme, and as our gaming sessions are more about socialising than gaming this might just be a good choice for an afternoons banter.

I decided to try and get another solo game in before months end and as Doomrock has sat here pretty much unplayed since I received it I thought it was in need of a play.

I really enjoyed my time with Doomrock, I found the adventuring part to be fun with some real decisions in how I used my time. Unfortunately for me those decisions appear to have been wrong and I fell in the first battle against a hoard of zombies.

The game does not hold your hand at all and I think its too it's credit, you have no realy way of knowing how to play until you play it. During the adventure pbase for instance I racked up a lot of money, I took the decision to plow that money into epic and common items at the store not really realising that I couldnt use them until I picked up some new traits through levelling which will be my strategy next time. And there will be a next time soon enough.

thumbsup Unique adventure and battle systems
thumbsup Great components and art
thumbsup Game is very tough
thumbsdown But is it fair?
thumbsdown Game is quite fiddly with a lengthy setup.

I didn't get a chance to go to the Monthly Boardgame Meetup at my FLGS today, so I decided to break out one of my favorite solo games for a play.

At the Gates of Loyang is, in my opinion, one of the best solo and 2-Player games available.

The object is to earn victory points along The Path of Prosperity by growing and selling vegetables.

Only scored 16pts (a so-so game), but it's always fun for a play or two and a solo game is quick setup and teardown with minimal fuss.

Scored my first 18!

Was the King of the Turnips. Had about 4 fields with them and lots of buyers. Did a lot of investing in fields at the beginning.

A few of the early turns I couldn't put any money on the VP track, so I didn't think I would do that good. But then the money starting coming in.

Ended with an 18-9.
It felt great!

Now I really am swimming with the solo boys - first a VPG game now Loyang!

Bought on eBay and have been dying to try this for ages.

Deceptively simple, effectively hard.

Ordered this yesterday as a birthday gift from my kids....thanks kids.

Played my first game and finished with 13 points. I'm fairly certain I forgot to advance along the path at the end of one round, and it being brand new I probably should have shuffled the cards more thoroughly as they seemed to appear in the offer in clumps.

Hopefully Ill do better my next play.

Ed

Played again this morning. Got a 17. Fairly certain I got exceptionally lucky though as the offer seemed to have the cards that went with my fields the whole game.

Woke up early again to get a morning game in. I figured I'd overcome my hesitancy and force myself to do this one.

Man, when I am at my most alert (morning during coffee), games are just awesome. I was thinking clearly and math-ing out every decision with the patience needed, enjoying every moment.

A 17 (with 6 money left over)! I was a little worried early on as by the end of round 4, I was only at 6 points. But it was at that point my engine finally kicked in.

Life sucks. I should be using this brainpower to play games, when I feel the best and most assured, not in the evenings when my brain's had it. Bollocks!

All I can say is that this session has made the game live up to the hype for me once again!

Intended to run through a few games of this last night while watching the Rangers game but only managed one. I may break this out again today.

Once again in the middling rounds I ended up thinking I was crushing it but in the end I finished with 16/0. I had skipped advancing for 1 coin in the first turn because that's all I had left and there was a helper in the offer I felt I needed to buy (shopper) to get a head start on some regular customers. Not sure if this really cost me a 17 or not though as the shopper did really help me make a push in turn 3.

Played twice more over the weekend and scored a new personal best.

My second game I finished with a 17/0, barely got there but had help from the helper that let me sell up to 3 goods from the market stalls back to my own.

The third game I took a different approach and managed to score an 18 with 2$ left over! I loaded up 3 more fields fairly quickly and before I grabbed any regulars, money was pretty tight the first 4 turns or so but then I started getting some nice pushes. I only ever picked up one two-pack since part of my strategy was to take advantage of the plethora of market stalls that were in the starting grid. It also helped that I had some high paying customers.
