I've been very taken in by Japanese designs of late, and in some cases part of the charm comes from the difficulty in translating Japanese rules into English - and the interesting rules that result. I thought it would be fun to collect some favorites - and see what others find interesting; please feel free to add other examples.

Just to be clear, I greatly appreciate the efforts of many Japanese designers to create English rule sets. It's clear that translation from Japanese to English is difficult, and I don't wish to discourage anyone from making the attempt. For me, these interesting translations add to the appeal of the games.

I must admit - while it made the rules easier to understand, I was somewhat disappointed when future revisions cleaned up the translation. Having to work through less clear translations helps one realize that they're playing a game from somewhere else...

Ore City isn't on BGG yet, but has a few classics:

"Public work card (purple) when it was building, and upside down, please put in buckwheat."

"Gold coins the player has obtained must for the other player, is a state in which the easy-to-understand or have much."

Assuming we've interpreted the rules correctly - I'm 90% certain we got them - the first say that completed purple buildings go off to the side, not in your play area, and the later says that money is open.

As an opponent of hidden trackable information, I'm really tempted to adopt the later as my motto.

EDIT: I was reminded of one more, which I must include:

"If the card is placed in the building space of both shouting, if the same color as the card, you can also building in its place."

Our interpretation was that players could build in their neighbor's spaces, so long as they match color. I'm not sure why neighbor would end up as shouting, but "both shouting" became the fun phrase of the day; I overheard it later from the 7 Wonders game at an adjacent table.

OK, this is very clear - but it's one of the more amusing start player rules so I had to list it.
